Abstract:We prove that a subset $A\subseteq [1, N]$ with \[\sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n} \ge (\log N)^{4/5 + o(1)}\] contains a subset $B$ such that \[\sum_{n\in B} \frac{1}{n} = 1.\] Our techniques refine those of Croot and of Bloom. Using our refinements, we additionally consider a number of questions regarding unit fractions due to Erdős and Graham.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham proposed to determine the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s = 1$ and asked, among other things, whether that number could be as large as $2^{n - o(n)}$. We show that the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s \leq 1$ is smaller than $2^{0.93n}$.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Abstract:We prove near-optimal upper bounds for the odd moments of the distribution of coprime residues in short intervals, confirming a conjecture of Montgomery and Vaughan. As an application we prove near-optimal upper bounds for the average of the refined singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures concerning the number of prime $k$-tuples for $k$ odd. The main new ingredient is a near-optimal upper bound for the number of solutions to $\sum_{1\leq i\leq k}\frac{a_i}{q_i}\in \mathbb{Z}$ when $k$ is odd, with $(a_i,q_i)=1$ and restrictions on the size of the numerators and denominators, that is of independent interest.

Abstract:Suppose $A$ is a subset of $\{1, \dotsc, N\}$ which does not contain any configurations of the form $x,x+\lfloor n^c \rfloor$ where $n \neq 0$ and $1<c<\frac{6}{5}$. We show that the density of $A$ relative to the first $N$ integers is $O_c(N^{1-\frac{6}{5c}})$. More generally, given a smooth and regular real valued function $h$ with "growth rate" $c \in (1,\frac{6}{5})$, we show that if $A$ lacks configurations of the form $x,x \pm \lfloor h(n) \rfloor$ then $\frac{|A|}{N} \ll_{h,\varepsilon} N^{1-\frac{6}{5c}+\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon>0$.

Unit and distinct distances in typical norms

Abstract:Erdős' unit distance problem and Erdős' distinct distances problem are among the most classical and well-known open problems in discrete mathematics. They ask for the maximum number of unit distances, or the minimum number of distinct distances, respectively, determined by $n$ points in the Euclidean plane. The question of what happens in these problems if one considers normed spaces other than the Euclidean plane has been raised in the 1980s by Ulam and Erdős and attracted a lot of attention over the years. We give an essentially tight answer to both questions for almost all norms on $\mathbb{R}^d$, in a certain Baire categoric sense. For the unit distance problem we prove that for almost all norms $\|.\|$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, any set of $n$ points defines at most $\frac{1}{2} d \cdot n \log_2 n$ unit distances according to $\|.\|$. We also show that this is essentially tight, by proving that for every norm $\|.\|$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, for any large $n$, we can find $n$ points defining at least $\frac{1}{2}(d-1-o(1))\cdot n \log_2 n$ unit distances according to $\|.\|$. For the distinct distances problem, we prove that for almost all norms $\|.\|$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ any set of $n$ points defines at least $(1-o(1))n$ distinct distances according to $\|.\|$. This is clearly tight up to the $o(1)$ term. We also answer the famous Hadwiger--Nelson problem for almost all norms on $\mathbb{R}^2$, showing that their unit distance graph has chromatic number $4$. Our results settle, in a strong and somewhat surprising form, problems and conjectures of Brass, Matoušek, Brass-Moser-Pach, Chilakamarri, and Robertson. The proofs combine combinatorial and geometric ideas with tools from Linear Algebra, Topology and Algebraic Geometry.

Abstract:For a set $L$ of positive proper fractions and a positive integer $r \geq 2$, a fractional $r$-closed $L$-intersecting family is a collection $\mathcal{F} \subset \mathcal{P}([n])$ with the property that for any $2 \leq t \leq r$ and $A_1, \dotsc, A_t \in \mathcal{F}$ there exists $\theta \in L$ such that $\lvert A_1 \cap \dotsb \cap A_t \rvert \in \{ \theta \lvert A_1 \rvert, \dotsc, \theta \lvert A_t \rvert\}$. In this paper we show that for $r \geq 3$ and $L = \{\theta\}$ any fractional $r$-closed $\theta$-intersecting family has size at most linear in $n$, and this is best possible up to a constant factor. We also show that in the case $\theta = 1/2$ we have a tight upper bound of $\lfloor \frac{3n}{2} \rfloor - 2$ and that a maximal $r$-closed $(1/2)$-intersecting family is determined uniquely up to isomorphism.

Metrical properties of exponentially growing partial quotients

Abstract:A fundamental challenge within the metric theory of continued fractions involves quantifying sets of real numbers, when represented using continued fractions, exhibit partial quotients that grow at specific rates. For any positive function $\Phi$, Wang-Wu theorem (2008) comprehensively describes the Hausdorff dimension of the set \begin{equation*} \EE_1(\Phi):=\left\{x\in [0, 1): a_n(x)\geq \Phi(n) \ {\rm for \ infinitely \ many} \ n\in \N\right\}. \end{equation*} Various generalisations of this set exist, such as substituting one partial quotient with the product of consecutive partial quotients in the aforementioned set which has connections with the improvements to Dirichlet's theorem, and many other sets of similar nature. Establishing the upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of such sets is significantly easier than proving the lower bound. In this paper, we present a unified approach to get an optimal lower bound for many known setups, including results by Wang-Wu [Adv. Math., 2008], Huang-Wu-Xu [Israel J. Math. 2020], Bakhtawar-Bos-Hussain [Nonlinearity 2020], and several others, and also provide a new theorem derived as an application of our main result. We do this by finding an exact Hausdorff dimension of the set $$S_m(A_0,\ldots,A_{m-1}) \defeq \left\{ x\in[0,1): \, c_i A_i^n \le a_{n+i}(x) < 2c_i A_i^n,0 \le i \le m-1 \ \text{for infinitely many } n\in\N \right\},$$ where each partial quotient grows exponentially and the base is given by a parameter $A_i>1$. For proper choices of $A_i$'s, this set serves as a subset for sets under consideration, providing an optimal lower bound of Hausdorff dimension in all of them. The crux of the proof lies in introducing of multiple probability measures consistently distributed over the Cantor-type subset of $S_m(A_0,\ldots,A_{m-1})$.

Almost sure limit theorems with applications to non-regular continued fraction algorithms

Abstract:We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of the measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu)$ with $\mu$ a $\sigma$-finite measure and $\mu(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $g:X\to \mathbb{R}$, it is well known from results by Aaronson that in general the asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Ng(x):= \sum_{j=1}^N\, (g\circ T^{j-1})(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and that there exists no sequence $(d_N)$ for which $S_Ng(x)/d_N \to 1$ for $\mu$-almost every $x\in X$. In this paper we consider the case $g\not\in L^1(X,\mu)$ assuming that there exists $E\in\mathcal{B}$ with $\mu(E)<\infty$ and $\int_E g\,\mathrm{d}\mu=\infty$ and continue the investigation initiated in previous work by the authors. We show that for transformations $T$ with strong mixing assumptions for the induced map on a finite measure set, the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of $S_Ng(x)$ for an unbounded observable $g$ may be obtained using two methods, adding a number of summands depending on $x$ to $S_Ng$ and trimming. The obtained sums are then asymptotic to a scalar multiple of $N$. The results are applied to a couple of non-regular continued fraction algorithms, the backward (or Rényi type) continued fraction and the even-integer continued fraction algorithms, to obtain the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the sums of the digits of the algorithms.

On the number of sets with small sumset

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Abstract:Assume that $\alpha>1$ is an algebraic number and $\xi\neq0$ is a real number. We are concerned with the distribution of the fractional parts of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})$. Under various Diophantine conditions on $\xi$ and $\alpha$, we obtain lower bounds on the number $n$ with $1\leq n\leq N $ for which the fractional part of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})_{n\geq1}$ fall into a prescribed region $I\subset [0,1]$, extending several results in the literature. As an application, we show that the Fourier decay rate of some self-similar measures is logarithmic, generalizing a result of Varjú and Yu.

Abstract:We verify an explicit inequality conjectured recently by Gilmer, thus proving that for any nonempty union-closed family $F \subseteq 2^{[n]}$, some $i\in [n]$ is contained in at least a $\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 0.38$ fraction of the sets in $F$. One case, an explicit one-variable inequality, is checked by computer calculation.

Abstract:Analytical expressions are derived for the number of fractions with equal numerators in the Farey sequence of order $n$, $F_n$, and in the truncated Farey sequence $F_n^{1/k}$ containing all Farey fractions below $1/k$, with $1\leq k \leq n$. These developments lead to an expression for the rank of $1/k$ in $F_n$, or equivalently $\left|F_n^{1/k}\right|$, and to remarkable relations between the ranks of different unit fractions. Furthermore, the results are extended to Farey fractions of the form $2/k$.

On the rate of convergence of continued fraction statistics of random rationals

Abstract:We show that the statistics of the continued fraction expansion of a randomly chosen rational in the unit interval, with a fixed large denominator $q$, approaches the Gauss-Kuzmin statistics with polynomial rate in $q$. This improves on previous results giving the convergence without rate. As an application of this effective rate of convergence, we show that the statistics of a randomly chosen rational in the unit interval, with a fixed large denominator $q$ and prime numerator, also approaches the Gauss-Kuzmin statistics. Our results are obtained as applications of improved non-escape of mass and equidistribution statements for the geodesic flow on the space $SL_2(\mathbb{R})/SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:Let $r_k(N)$ denote the size of the largest subset of $[N] = \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with no $k$-term arithmetic progression. We show that for $k\ge 5$, there exists $c_k>0$ such that \[r_k(N)\ll N\exp(-(\log\log N)^{c_k}).\] Our proof is a consequence of recent quasipolynomial bounds on the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$-norm as well as the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer\'{e}di as reformulated by Green and Tao.

Abstract:The Diophantine sums $\sum_{n=1}^N \| n \alpha \|^{-1}$ and $\sum_{n=1}^N n^{-1} \| n \alpha \|^{-1}$ appear in many different areas including the ergodic theory of circle rotations, lattice point counting and random walks, often in connection with Fourier analytic methods. Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani gave estimates for these and related sums in terms of the Diophantine approximation properties of $\alpha$ that are sharp up to a constant factor. In the present paper, we remove the constant factor gap between the upper and the lower estimates, and thus find the precise asymptotics for a wide class of irrationals. Our methods apply to sums with the fractional part instead of the distance from the nearest integer function, and to sums involving shifts $\| n \alpha + \beta \|$ as well. We also comment on a higher dimensional generalization of these sums.
