Abstract:Algebraic $kk$-theory, introduced by Cortiñas and Thom, is a bivariant $K$-theory defined on the category $\mathrm{Alg}$ of algebras over a commutative unital ring $\ell$. It consists of a triangulated category $kk$ endowed with a functor from $\mathrm{Alg}$ to $kk$ that is the universal excisive, homotopy invariant and matrix-stable homology theory. Moreover, one can recover Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory $\mathrm{KH}$ from $kk$ since we have $kk(\ell,A)=\mathrm{KH}(A)$ for any algebra $A$. We prove that $\mathrm{Alg}$ with the split surjections as fibrations and the $kk$-equivalences as weak equivalences is a stable category of fibrant objects, whose homotopy category is $kk$. As a consecuence of this, we prove that the Dwyer-Kan localization $kk_\infty$ of the $\infty$-category of algebras at the set of $kk$-equivalences is a stable infinity category whose homotopy category is $kk$.

Abstract:A kind of motivic stable homotopy theory of algebras is developed. Explicit fibrant replacements for the $S^1$-spectrum and $(S^1,\mathbb G)$-bispectrum of an algebra are constructed. As an application, unstable, Morita stable and stable universal bivariant theories are recovered. These are shown to be embedded by means of contravariant equivalences as full triangulated subcategories of compact generators of some compactly generated triangulated categories. Another application is the introduction and study of the symmetric monoidal compactly generated triangulated category of $K$-motives. It is established that the triangulated category $kk$ of Cortiñas--Thom can be identified with the $K$-motives of algebras. It is proved that the triangulated category of $K$-motives is a localization of the triangulated category of $(S^1,\mathbb G)$-bispectra. Also, explicit fibrant $(S^1,\mathbb G)$-bispectra representing stable algebraic Kasparov $K$-theory and algebraic homotopy $K$-theory are constructed.

The stable uniqueness theorem for equivariant Kasparov theory

Abstract:This paper examines and strengthens the Cuntz-Thomsen picture of equivariant Kasparov theory for arbitrary second-countable locally compact groups, in which elements are given by certain pairs of cocycle representations between C*-dynamical systems. The main result is a stable uniqueness theorem that generalizes a fundamental characterization of ordinary $KK$-theory by Lin and Dadarlat-Eilers. Along the way, we prove an equivariant Cuntz-Thomsen picture analog of the fact that the equivalence relation of homotopy agrees with the (a priori stronger) equivalence relation of stable operator homotopy. The results proved in this paper will be employed as the technical centerpiece in forthcoming work of the authors to classify certain amenable group actions on Kirchberg algebras by equivariant Kasparov theory.

Conformal transformations and equivariance in unbounded KK-theory

Abstract:We extend unbounded Kasparov theory to encompass conformal group and quantum group equivariance. This new framework allows us to treat conformal actions on both manifolds and noncommutative spaces. As examples, we present unbounded representatives of Kasparov's $\gamma$-element for the Lorentz groups and display the conformal $SL_q(2)$-equivariance of the standard spectral triple of the Podleś sphere. In pursuing descent for conformally equivariant cycles, we are led to a new framework for representing Kasparov classes. Our new representatives are unbounded, possess a dynamical quality, and also include known twisted spectral triples. We define an equivalence relation on these new representatives whose classes form an abelian group surjecting onto KK. The technical innovation which underpins these results is a novel multiplicative perturbation theory. By these means, we obtain Kasparov classes from the bounded transform with minimal side conditions.

Koszul homomorphisms and universal resolutions in local algebra

Abstract:We define a local homomorphism $(Q,k)\to (R,\ell)$ to be Koszul if its derived fiber $R \otimes^{\mathsf{L}}_Q k$ is formal, and if $\operatorname{Tor}^Q(R,k)$ is Koszul in the classical sense. This recovers the classical definition when $Q$ is a field, and more generally includes all flat deformations of Koszul algebras. The non-flat case is significantly more interesting, and there is no need for examples to be quadratic: all complete intersection and all Golod quotients are Koszul homomorphisms. We show that the class of Koszul homomorphisms enjoys excellent homological properties, and we give many more examples, especially various monomial and Gorenstein examples. We then study Koszul homomorphisms from the perspective of $\mathrm{A}_\infty$-structures on resolutions. We use this machinery to construct universal free resolutions of $R$-modules by generalizing a classical construction of Priddy. The resulting (infinite) free resolution of an $R$-module $M$ is often minimal, and can be described by a finite amount of data whenever $M$ and $R$ have finite projective dimension over $Q$. Our construction simultaneously recovers the resolutions of Shamash and Eisenbud over a complete intersection ring, and the bar resolutions of Iyengar and Burke over a Golod ring, and produces analogous resolutions for various other classes of local rings.

Abstract:KK-theory is a bivariant and homotopy-invariant functor on $C^*$-algebras that combines K-theory and K-homology. KK-groups form the morphisms in a triangulated category. Spanier-Whitehead K-Duality intertwines the homological with the cohomological side of KK-theory. Any extension of a unital $C^*$-algebra by the compacts has two natural exact triangles associated to it (the extension sequence itself and a mapping cone sequence). We find a duality (based on Spanier-Whitehead K-duality) that interchanges the roles of these two triangles together with their six-term exact sequences. This allows us to give a categorical picture for the duality of Cuntz-Krieger-Toeplitz extensions discovered by K. Matsumoto.

KK-rigidity of simple nuclear C*-algebras

Abstract:It is shown that if $A$ and $B$ are unital separable simple nuclear $\mathcal Z$-stable C$^*$-algebras and there is a unital embedding $A \rightarrow B$ which is invertible on $KK$-theory and traces, then $A \cong B$. In particular, two unital separable simple nuclear $\mathcal Z$-stable C$^*$-algebras which either have real rank zero or unique trace are isomorphic if and only if they are homotopy equivalent. It is further shown that two finite strongly self-absorbing C$^*$-algebras are isomorphic if and only if they are $KK$-equivalent in a unit-preserving way.

Abstract:Let A and C be two unital simple C∗-algebras with tracial rank zero. Suppose that C is amenable and satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. Denote by KKe(C,A)++ the set of those κ in KK(C,A) for which κ(K0(C)+∖{0})⊂K0(A)+∖{0} and κ([1C])=[1A]. Suppose that κ∈KKe(C,A)++. We show that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that [ϕ]=κ. Suppose that C is a unital AH-algebra and λ:T(A)→Tf(C) is a continuous affine map for which τ(κ([p]))=λ(τ)(p) for all projections p in all matrix algebras of C and any τ∈T(A), where T(A) is the simplex of tracial states of A and Tf(C) is the convex set of faithful tracial states of C. We prove that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that ϕ induces both κ and λ. Suppose that h:C→A is a unital monomorphism and γ∈Hom(K1(C),Aff(A)). Lin, Asymptotic unitary equivalence and asymptotically inner automorphisms, arXiv:math/0703610, 2007], this provides a bijection from the asymptotic unitary equivalence classes of unital monomorphisms from C to A to (KKT(C,A)++,Hom(K1(C),Aff(T(A)))/R0), where R0 is a subgroup related to vanishing rotation maps. As an application, combining these results with a result of W. Winter [W. Winter, Localizing the Elliott conjecture at strongly self-absorbing C∗-algebras, arXiv:0708.0283v3, 2007], we show that two unital amenable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras are isomorphic if they have the same Elliott invariant and the tensor products of these C∗-algebras with any UHF-algebra have tracial rank zero. In particular, if A and B are two unital separable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras with unique tracial states which are inductive limits of C∗-algebras of type I, then they are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic Elliott invariants.

Abstract:This article presents a new relation between the basic representation of split real simply-laced affine Kac-Moody algebras and finite dimensional representations of its maximal compact subalgebra $\mathfrak{k}$. We provide infinitely many $\mathfrak{k}$-subrepresentations of the basic representation and we prove that these are all the finite dimensional $\mathfrak{k}$-subrepresentations of the basic representation such that the quotient of the basic representation by the subrepresentation is a finite dimensional representation of a certain parabolic algebra and of the maximal compact subalgebra. By this result we provide an infinite composition series with a cosocle filtration of the basic representation. Finally, we present examples of the results and applications to supergravity.

Abstract:We extend the definition of the bivariant $K$-theory $kk^{ban}$ from plain Banach algebras to Banach algebras equipped with an action of a locally compact Hausdorff group $G$. We also define a natural transformation from Lafforgue's theory $KK^{ban}_G$ into the new equivariant theory, overcoming some technical difficulties that are particular to the equivariant case. The categorical framework allows us to systematically define a descent homomorphism and to prove a Green-Julg theorem, a dual version of it and a generalised version that involves the action of a proper $G$-space. We also include a naïve Poncaré duality theorem.

Super Kähler structures on the complex Abelian Lie supergroups

Abstract:We consider a real Abelian Lie supergroup $G$ acting on its complexification $M$, equipped with a $G$-invariant super Kähler form. We extend the scheme of classical geometric quantization to this setting and construct a unitary $G$-representation. We show that the occurrences of its irreducible subrepresentations are governed by the image of the moment map of the super Kähler form. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model of $G$, namely a unitary $G$-representation in which every unitary irreducible representation occurs exactly once.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">Motivated by gauge theory, we develop a general framework for chain complex-valued algebraic quantum field theories. Building upon our recent operadic approach to this subject, we show that the category of such theories carries a canonical model structure and explain the important conceptual and also practical consequences of this result. As a concrete application, we provide a derived version of Fredenhagen’s universal algebra construction, which is relevant e.g. for the BRST/BV formalism. We further develop a homotopy theoretical generalization of algebraic quantum field theory with a particular focus on the homotopy-coherent Einstein causality axiom. We provide examples of such homotopy-coherent theories via (1) smooth normalized cochain algebras on <span class="a-plus-plus inline-equation id-i-eq1"> <span class="a-plus-plus equation-source format-t-e-x">$\infty $</span> </span>-stacks, and (2) fiber-wise groupoid cohomology of a category fibered in groupoids with coefficients in a strict quantum field theory.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce Kasparov's bivariant K-theory that is equivariant under symmetries of a C*-tensor category. It is motivated by some dualities in quantum group equivariant KK-theory, and the classification theory of inclusions of C*-algebras. The fundamental properties of the KK-theory, i.e., the existence of the Kasparov product, Cuntz's picture, universality, and triangulated category structure, hold true in this generalization as well. Moreover, we further prove a new property specific to this theory; the invariance of KK-theory under weak Morita equivalence of the tensor categories. As an example, we study the Baum-Connes type property for $3$-cocycle twists of discrete groups.

Abstract:We investigate an extension of ideas of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) to a noncommutative geometry setting framed in terms of Kasparov modules. We use a mapping cone construction to relate odd index pairings to even index pairings with APS boundary conditions in the setting of KK-theory, generalising the commutative theory. We find that Cuntz-Kreiger systems provide a natural class of examples for our construction and the index pairings coming from APS boundary conditions yield complete K-theoretic information about certain graph C*-algebras.

Abstract:We introduce controlled $KK$-theory groups associated to a pair $(A,B)$ of separable $C^*$-algebras. Roughly, these consist of elements of the usual $K$-theory group $K_0(B)$ that approximately commute with elements of $A$. Our main results show that these groups are related to Kasparov's $KK$-groups by a Milnor exact sequence, in such a way that Rørdam's $KL$-group is identified with an inverse limit of our controlled $KK$-groups. In the case that the $C^*$-algebras involved satisfy the UCT, our Milnor exact sequence agrees with the Milnor sequence associated to a $KK$-filtration in the sense of Schochet, although our results are independent of the UCT. Applications to the UCT will be pursued in subsequent work.

A higher-order generalization of group theory

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show that fundamental concepts in higher-order Fourier analysis can be nauturally extended to the non-commutative setting. We generalize Gowers norms to arbitrary compact non-commutative groups. On the structural side, we show that nilspace theory (the algebraic part of higher-order Fourier analysis) can be naturally extended to include all non-commutative groups. To this end, we introduce generalized nilspaces called "groupspaces" and demonstrate that they possess properties very similar to nilspaces. We study $k$-th order generalizations of groups that are special groupspaces called {\it k-step} groupspaces. One step groupspaces are groups. We show that $k$-step groupspaces admit the structure of an iterated principal bundle with structure groups $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$. A similar, but somewhat more technical statement holds for general groupspaces, with possibly infinitely many structure groups. Structure groups of groupspaces are in some sense analogous to higher homotopy groups. In particular we use a version of the Eckmann-Hilton argument from homotopy theory to show that $G_i$ is abelian for $i\geq 2$. Groupspaces also show some similarities with $n$-groups from higher category theory (also used in physics) but the exact relationship between these concepts is a subject of future research.
