Abstract:A preponderance of astrophysical and cosmological evidence indicates that the universe contains not only visible matter but also dark matter. In order to suppress the couplings between the dark and visible sectors, a standard assumption is that these two sectors communicate only through a mediator. In this paper we make a simple but important observation: if the dark sector contains multiple components with similar quantum numbers, then this mediator also generically gives rise to dark-sector decays, with heavier dark components decaying to lighter components. This in turn can even give rise to relatively long dark decay chains, with each step of the decay chain also producing visible matter. The visible byproducts of such mediator-induced decay chains can therefore serve as a unique signature of such scenarios. In order to examine this possibility more concretely, we examine a scenario in which a multi-component dark sector is connected through a mediator to Standard-Model quarks. We then demonstrate that such a scenario gives rise to multi-jet collider signatures, and we examine the properties of such jets at both the parton and detector levels. Within relatively large regions of parameter space, we find that such multi-jet signatures are not excluded by existing monojet and multi-jet searches. Such decay cascades therefore represent a potential discovery route for multi-component dark sectors at current and future colliders.

Abstract:We study dark matter production from mediator decays in scenarios with an epoch of early matter domination. Particles that mediate interactions between dark matter and the standard model particles are kinematically accessible to the thermal bath as long as their mass is below the reheating temperature of the Universe after inflation. Decay of on-shell mediators can then lead to copious production of dark matter during early matter domination or a preceding radiation-dominated phase. In particular, for mediators that are charged under the standard model, it can exceed the standard freeze-in channel due to inverse annihilations at much lower temperatures (often by many orders of magnitude). The requirement to obtain the correct relic abundance severely constrains the parameter space for dark matter masses above a few TeV.

Abstract:Motivated by recent observations from PAMELA, Fermi and H.E.S.S., we consider dark matter decays in the framework of supersymmetric SU(5) grand unification theories. An SU(5) singlet S is assumed to be the main component of dark matters, which decays into visible particles through dimension six operators suppressed by the grand unification scale. Under certain conditions, S decays dominantly into a pair of sleptons with universal coupling for all generations. Subsequently, electrons and positrons are produced from cascade decays of these sleptons. These cascade decay chains smooth the e++e− spectrum, which permit naturally a good fit to the Fermi-LAT data. The observed positron fraction upturn by PAMELA can be reproduced simultaneously. We have also calculated diffuse gamma-ray spectra due to the e± excesses and compared them with the preliminary Fermi-LAT data from 0.1 GeV to 10 GeV in the region 0°⩽l⩽360°, 10°⩽|b|⩽20°. The photon spectrum of energy above 100 GeV, mainly from final state radiations, may be checked in the near future.
The Vev Flip-Flop: Dark Matter Decay between Weak Scale Phase Transitions

Abstract:We propose a new alternative to the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) paradigm for dark matter. Rather than being determined by thermal freeze-out, the dark matter abundance in this scenario is set by dark matter decay, which is allowed for a limited amount of time just before the electroweak phase transition. More specifically, we consider fermionic singlet dark matter particles coupled weakly to a scalar mediator $S_3$ and to auxiliary dark sector fields, charged under the Standard Model gauge groups. Dark matter freezes out while still relativistic, so its abundance is initially very large. As the Universe cools down, the scalar mediator develops a vacuum expectation value (vev), which breaks the symmetry that stabilises dark matter. This allows dark matter to mix with charged fermions and decay. During this epoch, the dark matter abundance is reduced to give the value observed today. Later, the SM Higgs field also develops a vev, which feeds back into the $S_3$ potential and restores the dark sector symmetry. In a concrete model we show that this "vev flip-flop" scenario is phenomenologically successful in the most interesting regions of its parameter space. We also comment on detection prospects at the LHC and elsewhere.

Longer-Lived Mediators from Charged Mesons and Photons at Neutrino Experiments

Abstract:Since many of the dark-sector particles interact with Standard Model (SM) particles in multiple ways, they can appear in experimental facilities where SM particles appear in abundance. In this study, we explore a particular class of longer-lived mediators that are produced from photons, charged mesons, neutral mesons, and $e^\pm$ that arise in proton-beam fixed-target-type neutrino experiments. This class of mediators encompasses light scalars that appear in theories like extended Higgs sectors, muon(electro)philic scalars, etc. We evaluate the sensitivities of these mediators at beam-based neutrino experiments such as the finished ArgoNeuT, ongoing MicroBooNE, SBND, ICARUS, and the upcoming DUNE experiment. We realize that scalars are more enhanced while produced from three-body decay of charged mesons, especially if they are muonphilic in nature. For scenarios that contain muonphilic scalars, these experiments can probe unexplored regions of parameter space that can explain the current discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of muons. The sensitivity of electrophilic scalars at the DUNE Near Detector can explore new regions. We also show that Bethe-Heitler scattering processes can be used to probe flavor-specific lepton final states even for the mediator masses below twice the lepton mass.

Abstract:Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) is a simple and well-motivated scenario that could explain long-standing puzzles in structure formation on small scales. If the required self-interaction arises through a light mediator (with mass $\sim 10$ MeV) in the dark sector, this new particle must be unstable to avoid overclosing the universe. The decay of the light mediator could happen due to a weak coupling of the hidden and visible sectors, providing new signatures for direct detection experiments. The SIDM nuclear recoil spectrum is more peaked towards low energies compared to the usual case of contact interactions, because the mediator mass is comparable to the momentum transfer of nuclear recoils. We show that the SIDM signal could be distinguished from that of DM particles with contact interactions by considering the time-average energy spectrum in experiments employing different target materials, or the average and modulated spectra in a single experiment. Using current limits from LUX and SuperCDMS, we also derive strong bounds on the mixing parameter between hidden and visible sector.

Dark Matter Annihilation via Breit-Wigner Enhancement with Heavier Mediator

Abstract:We propose a new scenario that both the dark matter freeze-out in the early Universe and its possible annihilation for indirect detection around a supermassive black hole are enhanced by a Breit-Wigner resonance. With the mediator mass larger than the total initial dark matter mass, this annihilation is almost forbidden at late times. Thus, the stringent cosmic microwave background and indirect detection constraints do not apply. However, a supermassive black hole can accelerate the dark matter particles to reactivate this resonant annihilation whose subsequent decay to photons leaves a unique signal. The running Fermi-LAT and the future COSI satellites can test this scenario.

Sommerfeld Enhancement from Multiple Mediators

Abstract:We study the Sommerfeld enhancement experienced by a scattering object that couples to a tower of mediators. This can occur in, e.g., models of secluded dark matter when the mediator scale is generated naturally by hidden-sector confinement. Specializing to the case of a confining CFT, we show that off-resonant values of the enhancement can be increased by ~ 20% for cases of interest when (i) the (strongly-coupled) CFT admits a weakly-coupled dual description and (ii) the conformal symmetry holds up to the Planck scale. Larger enhancements are possible for lower UV scales due to an increase in the coupling strength of the tower.

LHC Lifetime Frontier and Visible Decay Searches in Composite Asymmetric Dark Matter Models

Abstract:The LHC lifetime frontier will probe dark sector in near future, and the visible decay searches at fixed-target experiments have been exploring dark sector. Composite asymmetric dark matter with dark photon portal is a promising framework explaining the coincidence problem between dark matter and visible matter. Dark strong dynamics provides rich structure in the dark sector: the lightest dark nucleon is the dark matter, while strong annihilation into dark pions depletes the symmetric components of the dark matter. Dark photons alleviate cosmological problems. Meanwhile, dark photons make dark hadrons long-lived in terrestrial experiments. Moreover, the dark hadrons are produced through the very same dark photon. In this study, we discuss the visible decay searches for composite asymmetric dark matter models. For a few GeV dark nucleons, the LHC lifetime frontier, MATHUSLA and FASER, has a potential to discover their decay when kinetic mixing angle of dark photon is $\epsilon \gtrsim 10^{-4}$. On the other hand, fixed-target experiments, in particular SeaQuest, will have a great sensitivity to dark pions with a mass below GeV and with kinetic mixing $\epsilon \gtrsim 10^{-4}$ in addition to the LHC lifetime frontier. These projected sensitivities to dark hadrons in dark photon parameter space are comparable with the future sensitivities of dark photon searches, such as Belle-II and LHCb.

Self-Interacting Forbidden Dark Matter under a Cannibally Co-Decaying Phase

Abstract:In a usual dark matter (DM) model without a huge mass difference between the DM and lighter mediator, using the coupling strength suitable for having the correct relic density, the resulting self-interaction becomes several orders of magnitude smaller than that required to interpret the small scale structures. We present a framework that can offer a solution for this point. We consider a model that contains the vector DM and a heavier but unstable Higgs-like scalar in the hidden sector. When the temperature drops below $\sim m_{\rm DM}$, the hidden sector, which is thermally decoupled from the visible sector, enters a cannibal phase, during which the DM density is depleted with the out-of-equilibrium decay of the scalar. The favored parameter region, giving the correct relic density and the proper size of self-interactions, shows the scalar-to-DM mass ratio $\in [1.1,1.33]$ and the scalar mass $\in[9,114]\,{\rm MeV}$. A sizable parameter space still survives the most current constraints and can be further probed by the near future NA62 beam dump experiment.

Dynamics of metastable Standard Model particles from long-lived particle decays in the MeV primordial plasma

Abstract:e investigate the cosmological impact of hypothetical unstable new physics particles that decay in the MeV-scale plasma of the Early Universe. Focusing on scenarios where the decays produce metastable species such as muons, pions, and kaons, we systematically analyze the dynamics of these particles using coupled Boltzmann equations governing their abundances. Our results demonstrate that the metastable species can efficiently annihilate or interact with nucleons, which often leads to their disappearance prior to decay. The suppression of decay significantly alters the properties of cosmic neutrinos, impacting cosmological observables like Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the Cosmic Microwave Background. To support further studies, we provide a public Mathematica code that traces the evolution of these metastable particles and apply it to several new physics models.

Abstract:We propose two supersymmetric Standard Models (SMs) with decaying and stable dark matter (DM) particles. To explain the SM fermion masses and mixings and have a heavy decay DM particle S, we consider the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism by introducing an anomalous U(1)_X gauge symmetry. Around the string scale, the U(1)_X gauge symmetry is broken down to a Z_2 symmetry under which S is odd while all the SM particles are even. S obtains a vacuum expectation value around the TeV scale, and then it can three-body decay dominantly to the second/third family of the SM leptons in Model I and to the first family of the SM leptons in Model II. Choosing a benchmark point in the constrained minimal supersymmetric SM with exact R parity, we show that the lightest neutralino DM is consistent with the CDMS II experiment. Considering S three-body decay and choosing suitable parameters, we show that the PAMELA and Fermi-LAT experiments and the PAMELA and ATIC experiments can be explained in Model I and Model II, respectively.

Abstract:We study the decay of B+ meson into K+ plus a light mediator φ , which subsequently decays into a dark matter pair, χ ̄χ . Integrating constraints from DM relic density, direct detection, collider data and B -physics, alongside the recently reported results form Belle II experiment, we analyze the couplings between the mediator, standard model fermions, and the dark matter particles. Our results indicate that if the decay process φ→χ ̄χ is kinematically allowed, i.e., mφ>2mχ , then the mediator mass must be constrained within 0.35 GeV≲mφ≲3 GeV . Abstract:Non-zero neutrino mass and dark matter (DM) overshadow the success of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The most straightforward extension of the SM to explain these two issues is the Scotogenic model, where the SM particle spectrum extends with three isospin singlet right-handed neutrinos and one doublet scalar, all odd under a Z2 symmetry. The neutrino masses and mixings result from the Weinberg operator induced at one-loop level. The particle spectrum of this model contains a few weakly interacting stable massive particles, each of which can be a good candidate for DM. In this work, we have considered the lightest right-handed neutrino as DM candidate. The Yukawa couplings that give rise to the observed flavor mixings in the neutrino sector also lead to flavor violation in the SM charged lepton sector and hence, get tightly constrained from the charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) observables. The same Yukawa couplings also contribute to the DM annihilation in the early universe and hence, determine the relic density of the DM. In this work, we address the tension between the constraints from CLFV observables and measured DM relic density to obtain the large Yukawa couplings with the help of a parameterization that reduces the phenomenology relevant parameters to merely three and enhances the detection prospect at the collider experiments. We have explored the parameter space consistent with current CLFV bounds, the observed DM relic density, and the absolute neutrino mass limit. To search for these scenarios, we have identified two promising signals at the proposed lepton colliders: the mono-photon plus missing energy and di-lepton plus missing energy signals. We have studied the collider phenomenology of these signatures and estimated the 5 σ detection required luminosity for the center of mass energies at 500 GeV and 1 TeV.

Minimal decaying dark matter: from cosmological tensions to neutrino signatures

Abstract:The invisible decay of cold dark matter into a slightly lighter dark sector particle on cosmological time-scales has been proposed as a solution to the $S_8$ tension. In this work we discuss the possible embedding of this scenario within a particle physics framework, and we investigate its phenomenology. We identify a minimal dark matter decay setup that addresses the $S_8$ tension, while avoiding the stringent constraints from indirect dark matter searches. In our scenario, the dark sector contains two singlet fermions $N_{1,2}$, quasi-degenerate in mass, and carrying lepton number so that the heaviest state ($N_2$) decays into the lightest ($N_1$) and two neutrinos via a higher-dimensional operator $N_2\to \bar N_1\nu\nu$. The conservation of lepton number, and the small phase-space available for the decay, forbids the decay channels into hadrons and strongly suppresses the decays into photons or charged leptons. We derive complementary constraints on the model parameters from neutrino detectors, freeze-in dark matter production via $\nu\nu\to N_1N_2$, collider experiments and blazar observations, and we show that the upcoming JUNO neutrino observatory could detect signals of dark matter decay for model parameters addressing the $S_8$ tension if the dark matter mass is below $\simeq 1$ GeV.

Abstract:We conducted a study on a simplified dark matter (DM) model that introduces a vector-like intermediate particle, facilitating exclusive interactions between DM and the top quark in the Standard Model (SM). The analysis focused on the relic density of Dirac-type fermion DM and highlighted the complementary role of direct detection (DD) in constraining the DM model. Notably, in instances when DM mass is small, the tree-level two-body annihilation process experiences suppression. In such scenarios, the contributions of the three-body process and the one-loop process dominate the relic abundance. Concerning DD, calculations were performed for the two-loop contribution to the DM-gluon interaction, yielding the corresponding spin-independent scattering cross-section.

Non-perturbative effects for dark sectors with QCD portals

Abstract:In this work, we consider a class of dark matter (DM) models where the DM does not directly interact with the Standard Model (SM) particles at the tree-level. Therefore, the coannihilation mechanism is crucial in achieving the correct DM relic abundance, which in turn requires the coannihilating partner to be close in mass to the actual DM particle. In our systematisation of the models' class, the mediator and the coannihilation partner are assumed to be charged under QCD interactions. This last feature calls for a scrutiny of non-perturbative effects, namely Sommerfeld factors and bound-state formation, on the annihilations of the colored partner. Such non-perturbative effects are illustrated with an example model comprising a scalar leptoquark mediator, a Dirac vector-like fermion coannihilation partner, and a singlet DM fermion. Phenomenological features of this model, namely DM direct and indirect detection prospects, collider implications, and impact on the muon anomalous magnetic moment, are discussed.

Particle decay and 21 cm absorption from first minihaloes

Abstract:We consider the influence of decaying dark matter (DM) particles on the characteristics of 21 cm absorption in spectra of distant radio-loud sources - "21 cm forest" - from minihaloes with masses $M=10^5-10^7\msun$ virialized at $z_{vir} = 10$. We use 1D self-consistent hydrodynamic description to study evolution of minihaloes, and follow up their absorption characteristics from turnaround to virialization. We find that in the presence of decaying dark matter both thermal and dynamical evolution of minihaloes demonstrate significant deviation from those in the model without dark matter decay (standard recombination). We show that optical depth in 21 cm line is strongly suppressed in the presence of decaying particles: for $M=10^5-10^6\msun$ decaying dark matter with the energy rate deposited in baryonic gas $\xi_{L} = 0.59\times 10^{-25}$ s$^{-1}$ - the current upper limit of the energy deposit - decreases the optical depth and the equivalent width by an order of magnitude compared to the standard recombination. Thus additional ionization and heating from decaying DM particles almost "erases" absorption features from minihaloes with $M=10^5-10^6\msun$ for $\xi \simgt 0.3\xi_L$, which consequently considerably decreases the number of strong absorptions: for example, the number of absorptions with the equivalent width $W_\nu^{obs} \simgt 0.3$ kHz at $z\simeq10$ decreases more than 2.5 times for $\xi/\xi_{L} = 0.3$ and $\simgt$4.5 times for $\xi/\xi_{L} = 1$. We argue that "21 cm forest" absorptions might be a powerful probe of the presence of decaying dark matter in the early Universe.
