Abstract:We realize module functors and module natural transforms as spans of monoidal categories. We also discuss the generalizations to algebras and modules within an arbitrary monoidal 2-category, including $\mathbf{2Vect}$, $\mathbf{2Rep}(G)$, $\mathbf{2Vect}^\pi_G$, $\mathbf{Mod}(\mathcal{B})$, $\mathbf{MCat}$ and $\mathbf{BrCat}$.

Abstract:We consider the ordinary category Span(C) of (isomorphism classes of) spans of morphisms in a category C with finite limits as needed, composed horizontally via pullback, and give a general criterion for a quotient of Span(C) to be an allegory. In particular, when C carries a pullback-stable, but not necessarily proper, (E, M)-factorization system, we establish a quotient category Span_E(C) that is isomorphic to the category Rel_M(C) of M-relations in C, and show that it is a (unitary and tabular) allegory precisely when M is a class of monomorphisms in C. Without this restriction, one can still find a least pullback-stable and composition-closed class E. containing E such that Span_E.(C) is a unitary and tabular allegory. In this way one obtains a left adjoint to the 2-functor that assigns to every unitary and tabular allegory the regular category of its Lawverian maps. With the Freyd-Scedrov Representation Theorem for regular categories, we conclude that every finitely complete category with a stable factorization system has a reflection into the huge 2-category of all regular categories.

Abstract:We equip the category of vector bundles over the vertices of a locally finite building with the structure of a module category over a category of type webs in positive characteristic. This module category is a q -analogue of the action on vector bundles over the weight lattice. We show our module categories are equivariant with respect to symmetries of the building, and when a group G acts simply transitively on the vertices of this recovers the fiber functors constructed by C. Jones.

Abstract:Categorical aspects of the theory of modules over trusses are studied. Tensor product of modules over trusses is defined and its existence established. In particular, it is shown that bimodules over trusses form a monoidal category. Truss versions of the Eilenberg-Watts theorem and Morita equivalence are formulated. Projective and small-projective modules over trusses are defined and their properties studied.

Abstract:Algebra objects in $\infty$-categories of spans admit a description in terms of $2$-Segal objects. We introduce a notion of span between $2$-Segal objects and extend this correspondence to an equivalence of $\infty$-categories. Additionally, for every $\infty$-category with finite limits $\mathcal{C}$, we introduce a notion of a birelative $2$-Segal object in $\mathcal{C}$ and establish a similar equivalence with the $\infty$-category of bimodule objects in spans. Examples of these concepts arise from algebraic and hermitian K-theory through the corresponding Waldhausen $S_{\bullet}$-construction. Apart from their categorical relevance, these concepts can be used to construct homotopy coherent representations of Hall algebras.

Local Modules in Braided Monoidal 2-Categories

Abstract:Given an algebra in a monoidal 2-category, one can construct a 2-category of right modules. Given a braided algebra in a braided monoidal 2-category, it is possible to refine the notion of right module to that of a local module. Under mild assumptions, we prove that the 2-category of local modules admits a braided monoidal structure. In addition, if the braided monoidal 2-category has duals, we go on to show that the 2-category of local modules also has duals. Furthermore, if it is a braided fusion 2-category, we establish that the 2-category of local modules is a braided multifusion 2-category. We examine various examples. For instance, working within the 2-category of 2-vector spaces, we find that the notion of local module recovers that of braided module 1-category. Finally, we examine the concept of a Lagrangian algebra, that is a braided algebra with trivial 2-category of local modules. In particular, we completely describe Lagrangian algebras in the Drinfeld centers of fusion 2-categories, and we discuss how this result is related to the classifications of topological boundaries of (3+1)d topological phases of matter.

Abstract:In the literature, one finds several competing notions for the super (i.e., Z/2-graded) analog of a monoidal category. The goal of this paper is to clarify these definitions and the connections between them. We also discuss in detail the example of the odd Temperley-Lieb supercategory. In a forthcoming article, we will exploit the formalism developed here in order to define super analogs of the Kac-Moody 2-categories of Khovanov-Lauda and Rouquier.

Abstract:This is a report on aspects of the theory and use of monoidal categories. The first section introduces the main concepts through the example of the category of vector spaces. String notation is explained and shown to lead naturally to a link between knot theory and monoidal categories. The second section reviews the light thrown on aspects of representation theory by the machinery of monoidal category theory, such as braidings and convolution. The category theory of Mackey functors is reviewed in the third section. Some recent material and a conjecture concerning monoidal centres is included. The fourth and final section looks at ways in which monoidal categories are, and might, be used for new invariants of low-dimensional manifolds and for the field theory of theoretical physics.

From Morphism Categories to Functor Categories

Abstract:For a nice-enough category $\mathcal{C}$, we construct both the morphism category ${\rm H}(\mathcal{C})$ of $\mathcal{C}$ and the category ${\rm mod}\mbox{-}\mathcal{C}$ of all finitely presented contravariant additive functors over $\mathcal{C}$ with values in Abelian groups. The main theme of this paper, is to translate some representation-theoretic attributes back and forth from one category to the other. This process is done by using an appropriate functor between these two categories, an approach which seems quite promising in particular when we show that many of almost split sequences are preserved by this functor. We apply our results to the case of wide subcategories of module categories to obtain certain auto-equivalences over them. Another part of the paper deals with Auslander algebras arising from algebras of finite representation type. In fact, we apply our results to study the Auslander-Reiten translates of simple modules over such algebras. In the last parts, we try to recognize particular components in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of Auslander algebras arising from self-injective algebras of finite representation type.

On unimodular module categories

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a finite tensor category and $\mathcal{M}$ an exact left $\mathcal{C}$-module category. We call $\mathcal{M}$ unimodular if the finite multitensor category ${\sf Rex}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$ of right exact $\mathcal{C}$-module endofunctors of $\mathcal{M}$ is unimodular. In this article, we provide various characterizations, properties, and examples of unimodular module categories. As our first application, we employ unimodular module categories to construct (commutative) Frobenius algebra objects in the Drinfeld center of any finite tensor category. When $\mathcal{C}$ is a pivotal category, and $\mathcal{M}$ is a unimodular, pivotal left $\mathcal{C}$-module category, the Frobenius algebra objects are symmetric as well. Our second application is a classification of unimodular module categories over the category of finite dimensional representations of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra; this answers a question of Shimizu. Using this, we provide an example of a finite tensor category whose categorical Morita equivalence class does not contain any unimodular tensor category.

A functorial approach to $n$-abelian categories

Abstract:We develop a functorial approach to the study of $n$-abelian categories by reformulating their axioms in terms of their categories of finitely presented functors. Such an approach allows the use of classical homological algebra and representation theory techniques to understand higher homological algebra. As an application, we present two possible generalizations of the axioms "every monomorphism is a kernel" and "every epimorphism is a cokernel" of an abelian category to $n$-abelian categories. We also specialize our results to modules over rings, thereby describing when the category of finitely generated projective modules over a ring is $n$-abelian. Moreover, we establish a correspondence for $n$-abelian categories with additive generators, which extends the higher Auslander correspondence.

Abstract:We develop the theory of module categories over a Grothendieck-Verdier category, i.e. a monoidal category with a dualizing object and hence a duality structure more general than rigidity. Such a category C comes with two monoidal structures which are related by non-invertible morphisms and which we treat on an equal footing. Quite generally, non-invertible structure morphisms play a dominant role in this theory. In any Grothendieck-Verdier module category M we find two important subcategories M' and M''. The internal End of an object in M' that is a C-generator is an algebra such that its category of modules is equivalent to M as a module category. We also introduce a partially defined relative Serre functor S which furnishes an equivalence between M' and M''. Any isomorphism between an object m of M' and S(m) in M'' endows the internal End of m with the structure of a Grothendieck-Verdier Frobenius algebra.

Abstract:We define a category parameterizing Calabi-Yau algebra objects in an infinity category of spans. Using this category, we prove that there are equivalences of infinity categories relating, firstly: 2-Segal simplicial objects in C to algebra objects in Span(C); and secondly: 2-Segal cyclic objects in C to Calabi-Yau algebra objects in Span(C).

Abstract:We extend Barwick's and Haugseng's construction of the double $\infty$-category of spans in a pullback-complete $\infty$-category $\mathfrak{C}$ to more general shapes: for a large class of algebraic patterns $\mathfrak{P}$, we define a $\mathfrak{P}$-monoidal $\infty$-category of $\mathfrak{P}$-shaped spans in $\mathfrak{C}$, and we identify monads in it with Segal $\mathfrak{P}$-objects in $\mathfrak{C}$. For the cell pattern $\Theta^{\mathrm{op}}$, this recovers a homotopical reformulation of Batanin's original definition of weak $\omega$-categories, and in general can be seen as a variant of the generalised multicategories of Burroni, Hermida, Leinster and Cruttwell-Shulman.

Abstract:The monomorphism category $\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)$ is introduced, where $\mathcal X$ is a full subcategory of the module category $A$-mod of Artin algebra $A$. The key result is a reciprocity of the monomorphism operator $\mathcal S_n$ and the left perpendicular operator $^\perp$: for a cotilting $A$-module $T$, there is a canonical construction of a cotilting $T_n(A)$-module ${\rm \bf m}(T)$, such that $\mathcal S_n(^\perp T) = \ ^\perp {\rm \bf m}(T)$. As applications, $\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)$ is a resolving contravariantly finite subcategory in $T_n(A)$-mod with $\hat{\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)} = T_n(A)$-mod if and only if $\mathcal X$ is a resolving contravariantly finite subcategory in $A$-mod with $\hat{\mathcal X} = A$-mod. For a Gorenstein algebra $A$, the category $T_n(A)\mbox{-}\mathcal Gproj$ of Gorenstein-projective $T_n(A)$-modules can be explicitly determined as $\mathcal S_n(^\perp A)$. Also, self-injective algebras $A$ can be characterized by the property $T_n(A)\mbox{-}\mathcal Gproj = \mathcal S_n(A)$. Using $\mathcal S_n(A)= \ ^\perp {\rm \bf m}(D(A_A))$, a characterization of $\mathcal S_n(A)$ of finite type is obtained.

Abstract:Connections between heaps of modules and (affine) modules over rings are explored. This leads to explicit, often constructive, descriptions of some categorical constructions and properties that are implicit in universal algebra and algebraic theories. In particular, it is shown that the category of groups with a compatible action of a truss T (also called pointed T-modules) is isomorphic to the category of modules over the ring R(T) universally associated to the truss. This is widely used in the explicit description of free objects. Next, it is proven that the category of heaps of modules over T is isomorphic to the category of affine modules over R(T) and, in order to make the picture complete, that (in the unital case) these are in turn equivalent to a specific subcategory of the slice category of pointed T-modules over R(T). These correspondences and properties are then used to describe explicitly various (co)limits and to compare short exact sequences in the Barr-exact category of heaps of T-modules with short exact sequences as defined previously.

Abstract:We construct universal monoidal categories of topological tensor supermodules over the Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{gl}(V\oplus \Pi V)$ and $\mathfrak{osp}(V\oplus \Pi V)$ associated with a Tate space $V$. Here $V\oplus \Pi V$ is a $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded topological vector space whose even and odd parts are isomorphic to $V$. We discuss the purely even case first, by introducing monoidal categories$\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{gl}(V)}$, $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$ and $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$, and show that these categories are anti-equivalent to respective previously studied categories $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{gl}(V)}$, $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$, $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$. These latter categories have certain universality properties as monoidal categories, which consequently carry over to $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{gl}(V)}$, $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$ and $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$. Moreover, the categories $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$ and $\mathbb{T}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$ are known to be equivalent, and this implies the equivalence of the categories $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$ and $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$. After introducing a supersymmetric setting, we establish the equivalence of the category $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{gl}(V)}$ with the category $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{gl}(V\oplus \Pi V)}$, and the equivalence of both categories $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{o}(V)}$ and $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{sp}(V)}$ with $\widehat{\mathbf{T}}_{\mathfrak{osp}(V\oplus \Pi V)}$.

Abstract:By building on the notions of internal projective and injective objects in a module category introduced by Douglas, Schommer-Pries, and Snyder, we extend the reconstruction theory for module categories of Etingof and Ostrik. More explicitly, instead of algebra objects in finite tensor categories, we consider quasi-finite coalgebra objects in locally finite tensor categories. Moreover, we show that module categories over non-rigid monoidal categories can be reconstructed via lax module monads, which generalize algebra objects. For the category of finite-dimensional comodules over a (non-Hopf) bialgebra, we give this result a more concrete form, realizing module categories as categories of contramodules over Hopf trimodule algebras -- this specializes to our tensor-categorical results in the Hopf case. Using lax module functors we give a categorical proof of the variant of the fundamental theorem of Hopf modules which applies to Hopf trimodules. We also give a characterization of fusion operators for a Hopf monad as coherence cells for a module functor structure, using which we similarly reinterpret and reprove the Hopf-monadic fundamental theorem of Hopf modules due to Bruguières, Lack, and Virelizier.

Abstract:If $\mathbf{C}$ is a category with pullbacks then there is a bicategory with the same objects as $\mathbf{C}$, spans as morphisms, and maps of spans as 2-morphisms, as shown by Benabou. Fong has developed a theory of "decorated" cospans, which are cospans in $\mathbf{C}$ equipped with extra structure. This extra structure arises from a lax symmetric monoidal functor $F \colon \mathbf{C} \to \mathbf{D}$; we use this functor to "decorate" each cospan with apex $N \in \mathbf{C}$ with an element of $F(N)$. Using a result of Shulman, we show that when $\mathbf{C}$ has finite colimits, decorated cospans are morphisms in a symmetric monoidal bicategory. We illustrate our construction with examples from electrical engineering and the theory of chemical reaction networks.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a small category. We investigate ringed sites $(\mathbf{C},\mathfrak{R})$ on $\mathcal{C}$ and the resulting module categories $\mathfrak{M}{\rm od}\text{-}\mathfrak{R}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ is finite, based on Grothendieck and Verdier's classification of finite topoi, we prove that each $\mathfrak{M}{\rm od}\text{-}\mathfrak{R}$ is equivalent to ${\rm Mod}\text{-}\mathfrak{R}|_{\mathcal{D}}[\mathcal{D}]$, where $\mathfrak{R}|_{\mathcal{D}}[\mathcal{D}]$ is the skew category algebra, canonically defined on $(\mathbf{C},\mathfrak{R})$, for a uniquely determined full subcategory $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathcal{C}$ and the restriction $\mathfrak{R}|_{\mathcal{D}}$ of $\mathfrak{R}$ to $\mathcal{D}$.
