Abstract:A fundamental task in any physical theory is to quantify a certain physical quantity in a meaningful way. In this paper, we show that both fidelity distance and affinity distance satisfy the strong contractibility, and the corresponding resource quantifiers can be used to characterize a large class of resource theories. Under two assumptions, namely, convexity of "free states" and closure of free states under "selective free operations," our general framework of resource theory includes quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, partial coherence, and superposition. In partial coherence theory, we show that fidelity of partial coherence of a bipartite state is equal to the minimal error probability of a mixed quantum state discrimination task and vice versa, which complements the main result in Xiong and Wu [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51, 414005 (2018)]. We also compute the analytic expression of fidelity of partial coherence for (2, n) bipartite X states. At last, we study the correlated coherence in the framework of partial coherence theory. We show that partial coherence of a bipartite state, with respect to the eigenbasis of a subsystem, is actually a measure of discord-type quantum correlation.

Abstract:Coherence measures and their operational interpretations lay the cornerstone of coherence theory. In this paper, we introduce a class of coherence measures with alpha affinity, say alpha affinity of coherence for alpha is an element of(0, 1). Furthermore, we obtain the analytic formulas for these coherence measures and study their corresponding convex roof extension. We provide an operational interpretation for 1/2 affinity of coherence by showing that it is equal to the error probability to discrimination a set of pure states with the least-square measurement. By employing this relationship we regain the optimal measurement for equiprobable quantum state discrimination. Moreover, we compare these coherence quantifiers and establish a complementarity relation between the 1/2 affinity of coherence and path distinguishability for some special cases.

Abstract:Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate definition of incoherent operations, induced via coherence measures, and quantify dynamical coherence based on this definition. Finally, we apply our proposed definition to quantify POVM-based dynamical coherence.

Abstract:Quantum coherence characterizes the non-classical feature of a single party system with respect to a local basis. Based on a recently introduced resource framework, coherence can be regarded as a resource and be systematically manipulated and quantified. Operationally, coherence quantifies the intrinsic randomness of the outcome of the projective measurement in the system's computational basis. However, such a relation is only proven when randomness is characterized by the von Neumann entropy. In this work, we consider several recently proposed coherence measures and relate them to the general uncertainties of the projective measurement outcome conditioned on all the other systems. Our work thus provides a unified framework for redefining several coherence measures via general conditional entropies. Based on the relation, we numerically calculate the coherence measures via semi-definite programming. Furthermore, we discuss the operational meaning of the unified definition. Our result highlights the close relation between single partite coherence and bipartite quantum correlation.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)] presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measures. Moreover, strong links between the resource frameworks of coherence concurrence and entanglement concurrence is derived, which shows that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement based on two kinds of concurrence. This new coherence measure, coherence concurrence, may be beneficial to the study of quantum coherence.

Abstract:Complex numbers are widely used in quantum physics and are indispensable components for describing quantum systems and their dynamical behavior. The resource theory of imaginarity has been built recently, enabling a systematic research of complex numbers in quantum information theory. In this work, we develop two theoretical methods for quantifying imaginarity, motivated by recent progress within resource theories of entanglement and coherence. We provide quantifiers of imaginarity by the convex roof construction and quantifiers of the imaginarity by the least imaginarity of the input pure states under real operations. We also apply these tools to study the state conversion problem in resource theory of imaginarity.

Ultra-quantum coherent states in a single finite quantum system

Abstract:A set of $n$ coherent states is introduced in a quantum system with $d$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d)$. It is shown that they resolve the identity, and also have a discrete isotropy property. A finite cyclic group acts on the set of these coherent states, and partitions it into orbits. A $n$-tuple representation of arbitrary states in $H(d)$, analogous to the Bargmann representation, is defined. There are two other important properties of these coherent states which make them `ultra-quantum'. The first property is related to the Grothendieck formalism which studies the `edge' of the Hilbert space and quantum formalisms. Roughly speaking the Grothendieck theorem considers a `classical' quadratic form ${\mathfrak C}$ that uses complex numbers in the unit disc, and a `quantum' quadratic form ${\mathfrak Q}$ that uses vectors in the unit ball of the Hilbert space. It shows that if ${\mathfrak C}\le 1$, the corresponding ${\mathfrak Q}$ might take values greater than $1$, up to the complex Grothendieck constant $k_G$. ${\mathfrak Q}$ related to these coherent states is shown to take values in the `Grothendieck region' $(1,k_G)$, which is classically forbidden in the sense that ${\mathfrak C}$ does not take values in it. The second property complements this, showing that these coherent states violate logical Bell-like inequalities (which for a single quantum system are quantum versions of the Frechet probabilistic inequalities). In this sense also, our coherent states are deep into the quantum region.

Abstract:A major signature of quantum mechanics beyond classical physics is coherence, the existence of superposition states. The recently developed resource theory of quantum coherence allows the formalization of incoherent operations—those operations which cannot create coherence. We identify the set of operations which additionally do not use coherence. These are such that coherence cannot be exploited by a classical observer, who measures incoherent properties of the system, to go beyond classical dynamics. We give a physical interpretation in terms of interferometry and prove a dilation theorem, showing how these operations can always be constructed by the system interacting, in an incoherent way, with an ancilla. Such a physical justification is not known for the incoherent operations; thus, our results lead to a physically well-motivated resource theory of coherence. Next, we investigate the implications for coherence in multipartite systems. We show that quantum correlations can be defined naturally with respect to a fixed basis, providing a link between coherence and quantum discord. We demonstrate the interplay between these two quantities in the operations that we study and suggest implications for the theory of quantum discord by relating these operations to those which cannot create discord.

Abstract:The superposition principle of quantum mechanics states that any linear combination of two state vectors |0〉 and |1〉 represents an equally valid physical state of the quantum system: |ψ〉 = a|0〉+ b|1〉. For nonzero coefficients a and b, the state |ψ〉 will not be orthogonal to either |0〉 or |1〉, and |ψ〉 is traditionally said to be a coherent superposition of |0〉 and |1〉. Identifying coherence in this sense involves first stipulating a distinguished basis, {|0〉, |1〉, |2〉, · · · }, which is singled out by the unavoidable interaction with the environment, also known as decoherence [1]. An application of the superposition principle to many-body systems leads to quantum entanglement [2], a nonclassical type of correlation and an important resource for quantum technology. Recent results show that not all quantum technological tasks require the presence of entanglement, but can make use of other nonclassical features such as quantum discord [3] and even quantum coherence [4]. Motivated by this latter discovery, researchers have recently begun developing a resource theory of quantum coherence (see [4] for a review). This resource theory aims to rigorously quantify the amount of coherence in different quantum states and quantum processes, while further studying the use of coherence in quantum technologies, including quantum metrology, quantum computation, quantum random number generation, and quantum communication. From this resource-theoretic perspective, quantum coherence is characterized as some fungible property of quantum states that can be manipulated and exchanged from one system to the next. Abstract:Coherence, the superposition of orthogonal quantum states, is indispensable in various quantum processes. Inspired by the polynomial invariant for classifying and quantifying entanglement, we first define polynomial coherence measure and systematically investigate its properties. Except for the qubit case, we show that there is no polynomial coherence measure satisfying the criterion that its value takes zero if and only if for incoherent states. Then, we release this strict criterion and obtain a necessary condition for polynomial coherence measure. Furthermore, we give a typical example of polynomial coherence measure for pure states and extend it to mixed states via a convex-roof construction. Analytical formula of our convex-roof polynomial coherence measure is obtained for symmetric states which are invariant under arbitrary basis permutation. Consequently, for general mixed states, we give a lower bound of our coherence measure.

Abstract:It has been a long-standing debate that why quantum mechanics uses complex numbers but not only real numbers. To address this topic, in recent years, the imaginarity theory has been developed in the way of quantum resource theory. However, the existing imaginarity theory mainly focuses on the quantum systems with finite dimensions. Gaussian states are widely used in many fields of quantum physics, but they are in the quantum systems with infinite dimensions. In this paper we establish a resource theory of imaginarity for bosonic Gaussian states. To do so, under the Fock basis, we determine the real Gaussian states and real Gaussian channels in terms of the means and covariance matrices of Gaussian states. Also, we provide two imaginary measures for Gaussian states based on the fidelity.

Abstract:We study the geometric measure of quantum coherence recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 1 1 5 (2015) 020403]. Both lower and upper bounds of this measure are provided. These bounds are shown to be tight for a class of important coherent states - maximally coherent mixed states. The trade-off relation between quantum coherence and mixedness for this measure is also discussed.

Abstract:The concept of bock-coherence, first introduced in [1] and developed in [2,3] encompasses the case where experimental capabilities are not so delicate to perform arbitrary refined measurements on individual atoms. We develop a framework which facilitates further investigation of this resource theory in several respects. Using this framework, we investigate the problem of state conversion by incoherent operations and show that a majorization condition is the necessary and sufficient condition for state transformation by block-incoherent operations. We also determine the form of the maximally coherent state from which all other states and all unitary gates can be constructed by incoherent operations. Thereafter, we define the concept of block-cohering and block-decohering powers of quantum channels and determine these powers for several types of channels. Finally, we explore the relation between block coherence and a previous extension of coherence, known as $k$-coherence.

Abstract:We study the transformation between quantum states under incoherent operations and unitary incoherent operations. In high dimensional systems, we show any two pure states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations. For mixed states, we show any two incoherent states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations. Furthermore, we show any incoherent states can be transformed by any mixed states under incoherent operations. In qubit systems, we prove the necessary and sufficient condition for the transformation between any two mixed states by incoherent operations alternatively and obtain the corresponding incoherent operations. Moreover we prove any two mixed qubit states with nonzero coherence can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations.

Abstract:Measurement outcomes of a quantum state can be genuinely random (unpredictable) according to the basic laws of quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation puts constrains on the accuracy of two noncommuting observables. The existing uncertainty relations adopt variance or entropic measures, which are functions of observed outcome distributions, to quantify the uncertainty. According to recent studies of quantum coherence, such uncertainty measures contain both classical (predictable) and quantum (unpredictable) components. In order to extract out the quantum effects, we define quantum uncertainty to be the coherence of the state on the measurement basis. We discover a quantum uncertainty relation of coherence between two measurement non-commuting bases. Furthermore, we analytically derive the quantum uncertainty relation for the qubit case with three widely adopted coherence measures, the relative entropy using coherence, the coherence of formation, and the $l_1$ norm of coherence.

Abstract:Quantification of coherence lies at the heart of quantum information processing and fundamental physics. Exact evaluation of coherence measures generally needs a full reconstruction of the density matrix, which becomes intractable for large-scale multipartite systems. Here, we propose a systematic theoretical approach to efficiently estimating lower and upper bounds of coherence in multipartite states. Under the stabilizer formalism, the lower bound is determined by the spectrum estimation method with a small number of measurements, and the upper bound is determined by a single measurement. We verify our theory with a four-qubit optical quantum system. We experimentally implement various multiqubit entangled states, including the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, the cluster state, and the W state, and show how their coherences are efficiently inferred from measuring a few observables.

Abstract:As a quantum resource, quantum coherence plays an important role in modern physics. Many coherence measures and their relations with entanglement have been proposed, and the dynamics of entanglement has been experimentally studied. However, the knowledge of general results for coherence dynamics in open systems is limited. Here we propose a coherence factorization law, which describes the evolution of coherence passing through any noisy channels characterized by genuinely incoherent operations. We use photons to implement the quantum operations and experimentally verify the law for qubits and qutrits. Our work is a step toward the understanding of the evolution of coherence when the system interacts with the environment, and will boost the study of more general laws of coherence.
