Abstract:The Airy point process is a determinantal point process that arises from the spectral edge of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In this paper, we establish a large deviation principle for the Airy point process. Our result also extends to point processes arising from the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator.

In this introductory survey, we will briefly review some basic notions, intuitive background and fundamental properties concerning Tracy-Widom distribution and Airy2 process. For sake of reading, the paper starts with some simple and well-known facts about normal distributions, Gaussian processes and their sample path properties.

Abstract:We first show that the Airy$_1$ process is associated using the association property of the solution to the stochastic heat equation and convergence of the KPZ equation to the KPZ fixed point. Then we apply Newman's inequality to establish the ergodicity and central limit theorem for the Airy$_1$ process. Combined with the asymptotic behavior of the tail probability, we derive a Poisson limit theorem for the Airy$_1$ process and give a precise estimate on the asymptotic behavior of the maximum of the Airy$_1$ process over an interval. Analogous results for the Airy$_2$ process are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper we study process-level large deviations for spin-flip particle systems and more general Markov processes. We prove that a modification of a well known Donsker-Varadhan entropy function can be used to govern the large deviation lower bounds for any such process starting from a class of initial distributions related to an extremal invariant measure of the process. In some specific cases, we obtain the full large deviation principle.

Abstract:The parabolic Airy line ensemble $\mathfrak A$ is a central limit object in the KPZ universality class and related areas. On any compact set $K = \{1, \dots, k\} \times [a, a + t]$, the law of the recentered ensemble $\mathfrak A - \mathfrak A(a)$ has a density $X_K$ with respect to the law of $k$ independent Brownian motions. We show that $$ X_K(f) = \exp \left(-\textsf{S}(f) + o(\textsf{S}(f))\right) $$ where $\textsf{S}$ is an explicit, tractable, non-negative function of $f$. We use this formula to show that $X_K$ is bounded above by a $K$-dependent constant, give a sharp estimate on the size of the set where $X_K < \epsilon$ as $\epsilon \to 0$, and prove a large deviation principle for $\mathfrak A$. We also give density estimates that take into account the relative positions of the Airy lines, and prove sharp two-point tail bounds that are stronger than those for Brownian motion. These estimates are a key input in the classification of geodesic networks in the directed landscape. The paper is essentially self-contained, requiring only tail bounds on the Airy point process and the Brownian Gibbs property as inputs.

Abstract:The Airy$_\beta$ line ensemble is a random collection of continuous curves, which should serve as a universal edge scaling limit in problems related to eigenvalues of random matrices and models of 2d statistical mechanics. This line ensemble unifies many existing universal objects including Tracy-Widom distributions, eigenvalues of the Stochastic Airy Operator, Airy$_2$ process from the KPZ theory. Here $\beta>0$ is a real parameter governing the strength of the repulsion between the curves. We introduce and characterize the Airy$_\beta$ line ensemble in terms of the Laplace transform, by producing integral formulas for its joint multi-time moments. We prove two asymptotic theorems for each $\beta>0$: the trajectories of the largest eigenvalues in the Dyson Brownian Motion converge to the Airy$_\beta$ line ensemble; the extreme particles in the G$\beta$E corners process converge to the same limit. The proofs are based on the convergence of random walk expansions for the multi-time moments of prelimit objects towards their Brownian counterparts. The expansions are produced through Dunkl differential-difference operators acting on multivariate Bessel generating functions.

Limit theorems for extrema of Airy processes

Abstract:We establish limit theorems for the maxima and minima of Airy$_1$ and Airy$_2$ processes (denoted by $\mathcal{A}_1(\cdot)$ and $\mathcal{A}_2(\cdot)$ respectively) over growing intervals. In particular, we identify the finite non-zero constants that are the almost sure limits of $(\log t)^{-2/3}\max_{0\le s \le t} \mathcal{A}_{i}(s)$ and $(\log t)^{-1/3}\min_{0\le s \le t} \mathcal{A}_{i}(s)$ for $i=1,2$. This complements and extends the results of (Pu, 2023), where the question for the maxima was considered and the order of growth was identified for both $\mathcal{A}_1$ and $\mathcal{A}_2$ and the constant was identified for $\mathcal{A}_1$. Our approach is different from that of (Pu, 2023); instead of complicated formulae for multi-point distributions, we rely on the well-known convergence of passage time profiles in planar exponential last passage percolation started from different initial conditions to $\mathcal{A}_1$ and $\mathcal{A}_2$, together with the recently developed sharp one-point estimates in (Baslingker et al., 2024) for the point-to-point and point-to-line passage times in exponential LPP and a combination of old and new results on the geometry of the LPP landscape.

Abstract:The Airy line ensemble is a random collection of continuous ordered paths that plays an important role within random matrix theory and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. The aim of this paper is to prove a universality property of the Airy line ensemble. We study growing numbers of i.i.d. continuous-time random walks which are then conditioned to stay in the same order for all time using a Doob h-transform. We consider a general class of increment distributions; a sufficient condition is the existence of an exponential moment and a log-concave density. We prove that the top particles in this system converge in an edge scaling limit to the Airy line ensemble in a regime where the number of random walks is required to grow slower than a certain power (with a non-optimal exponent 3/50) of the expected number of random walk steps. Furthermore, in a similar regime we prove that the law of large numbers and fluctuations of linear statistics agree with non-intersecting Brownian motions.

Abstract:We obtain sample-path large deviations for a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with bounded drifts and heavy-tailed Lévy processes. These heavy-tailed Lévy processes do not satisfy the exponential integrability condition, which is a common restriction on the Lévy processes in existing large deviations contents. We further prove that the solution processes satisfy a weak large deviation principle with a discrete rate function and logarithmic speed. We also show that they do not satisfy the full large deviation principle.

Abstract:Large deviation principles are established for the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution and two-parameter Dirichlet process when parameter $\theta$ approaches infinity. The motivation for these results is to understand the differences in terms of large deviations between the two-parameter models and their one-parameter counterparts. New insight is obtained about the role of the second parameter $\alpha$ through a comparison with the corresponding results for the one-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution and Dirichlet process.

Abstract:In this work, we establish, for a strong Feller process, the large deviation principle for the occupation measure conditioned not to exit a given subregion. The rate function vanishes only at a unique measure, which is the so-called quasi-ergodic distribution of the process in this subregion. In addition, we show that the rate function is the Dirichlet form in the particular case when the process is reversible. We apply our results to several stochastic processes such as the solutions of elliptic stochastic differential equations driven by a rotationally invariant $\alpha$-stable process, the kinetic Langevin process, and the overdamped Langevin process driven by a Brownian motion.

Abstract:In this article, we develop a large deviation principle (LDP) for a class of retarded Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by Lévy processes. We first present a LDP result for time delay systems driven by cylindrical Wiener processes based on the large deviations of Gaussian processes. By using a contraction technique and passing on a finite-dimensional approximation, an LDP is obtained for stochastic time delay evolution equations driven by additive Lévy noise, whose solutions are generally not Lévy processes any more.

Abstract:In this article we prove large deviations principles for high minima of Gaussian processes with nonnegatively correlated increments on arbitrary intervals. Furthermore, we prove large deviations principles for the increments of such processes on intervals $[a,b]$ where $b-a$ is either less than the increment or twice the increment, assuming stationarity of the increments. As a chief example, we consider fractional Brownian motion and fractional Gaussian noise for $H\geq 1/2$.

Abstract:This is mostly an exposition, aimed to be accessible to geometers, analysts, and probabilists, of a fundamental recent theorem of R. Berman with recent developments by J. Hultgren, that asserts that the second boundary value problem for the real Monge--Ampère equation admits a probabilistic interpretation, in terms of many particle limit of permanental point processes satisfying a large deviation principle with a rate function given explicitly using optimal transport. An alternative proof of a step in the Berman--Hultgren Theorem is presented allowing to to deal with all "tempratures" simultaneously instead of first reducing to the zero-temperature case.

Abstract:We study the distribution of the supremum of the Airy process with $m$ wanderers minus a parabola, or equivalently the limit of the rescaled maximal height of a system of $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges as $N\to\infty$, where the first $N-m$ paths start and end at the origin and the remaining $m$ go between arbitrary positions. The distribution provides a $2m$-parameter deformation of the Tracy--Widom GOE distribution, which is recovered in the limit corresponding to all Brownian paths starting and ending at the origin.

Abstract:Consider $n+m$ nonintersecting Brownian bridges, with $n$ of them leaving from 0 at time $t=-1$ and returning to 0 at time $t=1$, while the $m$ remaining ones (wanderers) go from $m$ points $a_i$ to $m$ points $b_i$. First, we keep $m$ fixed and we scale $a_i,b_i$ appropriately with $n$. In the large-$n$ limit, we obtain a new Airy process with wanderers, in the neighborhood of $\sqrt{2n}$, the approximate location of the rightmost particle in the absence of wanderers. This new process is governed by an Airy-type kernel, with a rational perturbation. Letting the number $m$ of wanderers tend to infinity as well, leads to two Pearcey processes about two cusps, a closing and an opening cusp, the location of the tips being related by an elliptic curve. Upon tuning the starting and target points, one can let the two tips of the cusps grow very close; this leads to a new process, which might be governed by a kernel, represented as a double integral involving the exponential of a quintic polynomial in the integration variables.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a generalized stochastic model associated with affine point processes based on several classical models. In particular, we study the asymptotic behavior of the process when the initial intensity is large, i.e. the intensity of arriving events observed initially is considerably larger, which appears in many real applications. For our generalized model, we establish (i) the large deviation principle; (ii) the corresponding functional law of large numbers; (iii) the corresponding central limit theorem, that reflect the fundamentals of the process asymptotic behavior. Our obtained results include existing results as special cases with a more general structure.

Abstract:The area enclosed by the two-dimensional Brownian motion in the plane was studied by Lévy, who found the characteristic function and probability density of this random variable. For other planar processes, in particular ergodic diffusions described by linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs), only the expected value of the stochastic area is known. Here, we calculate the generating function of the stochastic area for linear SDEs, which can be related to the integral of the angular momentum, and extract from the result the large deviation functions characterising the dominant part of its probability density in the long-time limit, as well as the effective SDE describing how large deviations arise in that limit. In addition, we obtain the asymptotic mean of the stochastic area, which is known to be related to the probability current, and the asymptotic variance, which is important for determining from observed trajectories whether or not a diffusion is reversible. Examples of reversible and irreversible linear SDEs are studied to illustrate our results.
