Abstract:We formulate a new conceptual approach for one-shot complete polarization state measurement with nanostructured metasurfaces applicable to classical light and multi-photon quantum states, by drawing on the principles of generalized quantum measurements based on positive operator-valued measures (POVMs). Accurate polarization reconstruction from a combination of photon counts or correlations from several diffraction orders is robust with respect to even strong fabrication inaccuracies, requiring only a single classical calibration of metasurface transmission.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a new conceptual method for single - time complete polarization state measurement using nanostructured metasurfaces, which is applicable to classical light and multi - photon quantum states. Specifically, by utilizing the principle of generalized quantum measurement based on positive operator - valued measures (POVMs), the paper proposes a method that can accurately reconstruct the polarization state even in the presence of strong manufacturing errors. This method can achieve robust polarization reconstruction with only one classical calibration of metasurface transmission, and does not require interleaving multiple gratings, thus allowing the metasurface size to be reduced while maintaining high transmission efficiency and output beam quality. In addition, the paper also explores the robust operation ability of this method under changing environmental conditions, providing new possibilities for space - based imaging and satellite optics.
