Abstract:We present a common framework to study varieties in great generality from a categorical point of view. The main application of this study is in the setting of algebraic categories, where we introduce Birkhoff varieties which are essentially subvarieties of algebraic categories, and we get a generalization of Birkhoff's variety theorem. In particular, we show that Birkhoff varieties are coreflexive equalizers. The key of this generalization is to give a more general concept of equation for subvarieties of algebraic categories. In order to get our characterization of Birkhoff varieties, we study inserters over algebraic categories, where we generalize some well-known results of algebras for finitary endofunctors over $Set$. By duality, we obtain a characterization of cosubvarieties of coalgebraic categories. Surprisingly, these cosubvarieties turn to be varieties according to our theory of varieties.

Abstract:Classical varieties were characterized by Lawvere as the categories with effective congruences and a varietal generator: an abstractly finite regular generator which is regularly projective (its hom-functor preserves regular epimorphisms). We characterize varieties of quantitative algebras of Mardare, Panangaden and Plotkin analogously as metric-enriched categories. We introduce the concept of a subcongruence (a metric-enriched analogue of a congruence) and the corresponding subregular epimorphisms obtained via colimits of subcongruences. Varieties of quantitative algebras are precisely the metric-enriched categories with effective subcongruences and a subvarietal generator: an abstractly finite subregular generator which is subregularly projective (its hom-functor preserves subregular epimorphisms).

Cartesian closed varieties II: links to algebra and self-similarity

Abstract:This paper is the second in a series investigating cartesian closed varieties. In first of these, we showed that every non-degenerate finitary cartesian variety is a variety of sets equipped with an action by a Boolean algebra B and a monoid M which interact to form what we call a matched pair [B|M]. In this paper, we show that such pairs [B|M] are equivalent to Boolean restriction monoids and also to ample source-étale topological categories; these are generalisations of the Boolean inverse monoids and ample étale topological groupoids used to encode self-similar structures such as Cuntz and Cuntz--Krieger $C^\ast$-algebras, Leavitt path algebras and the $C^\ast$-algebras associated to self-similar group actions. We explain and illustrate these links, and begin the programme of understanding how topological and algebraic properties of such groupoids can be understood from the logical perspective of the associated varieties.

Abstract:In this paper, motivated by a diffeological vector space with the D -topology, we introduce the concept of quasitopological vector space, which is a vector space with a topology satisfying the conditions that the vector addition is separately continuous in each variable, and the scalar multiplication is jointly continuous. The following results are proved: (1) Every quasitopological finite-dimensional vector space is a topological vector space. (2) For each infinite-dimensional vector space, we define a T1 non-Hausdorff topology on it such that it is a quasitopological vector space but is not a topological vector space.

Abstract:We investigate quasivarieties of (distributive) p-algebras. We sharpen some previous results, give a better picture of the subquasivariety lattice, and prove that quasivarieties generated by free p-algebras belong to a rather small quasivariety characterised by excluding all but 3 subdirectly irreducibles.

Abstract:We prove that a finite pointed abelian group generates a finitely axiomatizable variety that has a finite quasivariety lattice. As a consequence, we obtain that a quasivariety generated by a finite pointed abelian group has a finite basis of quasi-identities. The problems arising from the results obtained are also discussed.

From Subfactors to Categories and Topology II. The quantum double of tensor categories and subfactors

Abstract:We are concerned with the center (=quantum double) of tensor categories and prove generalizations of several results proven previously for quantum doubles of Hopf algebras. We consider F-linear tensor categories C with simple unit and finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We assume that C is either a *-category (i.e. there is a positive *-operation on the morphisms) or semisimple and spherical over an algebraically closed field F. In the latter case we assume that dim C=sum_i d(X_i)^2 is non-zero, where the summation runs over the isomorphism classes of simple objects. We prove: (i) Z(C) is a semisimple spherical (or *-) category. (ii) Z(C) is weakly monoidally Morita equivalent (in the sense of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CT/0111204" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CT/0111204">math.CT/0111204</a>) to C X C^op. This implies dim Z(C)=(dim C)^2. (iii) We analyze the simple objects of Z(C) in terms of certain finite dimensional algebras, of which Ocneanu's tube algebra is the smallest. We prove the conjecture of Gelfand and Kazhdan according to which the number of simple objects of Z(C) coincides with the dimension of the state space H_{S^1\times S^1} of the torus in the triangulation TQFT built from C. (iv) We prove that Z(C) is modular and we compute the Gauss sums Delta_+/-(Z(C))=sum_i theta(X_i)^{+/- 1}d(X_i)^2=dim C. (v) Finally, if C is already modular then Z(C)\simeq C X C~, where C~ is the tensor category C with the braiding c~_{X,Y}=c_{Y,X}^{-1}.

Categories which are varieties of classical or ordered algebras

Abstract:Following ideas of Lawvere and Linton we prove that classical varieties are precisely the exact categories with a varietal generator. This means a strong generator which is abstractly finite and regularly projective. An analogous characterization of varieties of ordered algebras is also presented. We work with order-enriched categories, and introduce the concept of subexact category and subregular projective (corresponding naturally to the ordinary case). Varieties of ordered algebras are precisely the subexact categories with a subvarietal generator. This means a strong generator which is abstractly finite and subregularly projective.

Abstract:We extend the theory of profinite algebras, as it is used in the algebraic theory of regular languages, to the more general setting of Stone topological algebras with the ultimate goal of going beyond classes of regular languages. We introduce Stone pseudovarieties, that is, classes of Stone topological algebras of a fixed topological signature that are closed under taking Stone quotients, closed subalgebras and finite direct products. Looking at the dual Stone spaces of Boolean algebras of subsets of a given topological algebra, we find a simple characterization of when the dual space admits a natural structure of topological algebra; the characterization is given in terms of how the Boolean algebra behaves under the inverses of the operation evaluation mappings of each arity. This provides an alternative, which is presented in the form of an equivalence of categories, to the duality theory of M. Gehrke. As an application, a Stone quotient of a Stone topological algebra that is residually in a given Stone pseudovariety is shown to be also residually in it, thereby extending the corresponding result of M. Gehrke for the Stone pseudovariety of all finite algebras over discrete signatures, which was recently extended to topological signatures jointly by the authors and H. Goulet-Ouellet. The residual closure of a Stone pseudovariety is thus a Stone pseudovariety, and these are precisely the Stone analogues of varieties. A Birkhoff type theorem for Stone varieties is also established and it is shown how Reiterman's theorem can be derived from it.

Structural completeness in quasivarieties

Abstract:In this paper we study various forms of (hereditary) structural completeness for quasivarieties of algebras, using mostly algebraic techniques. More specifically we study relative weakly projective algebras and the way they interact with structural completeness in quasivarieties. These ideas are then applied to the study of $C$-structural completeness and $C$-primitivity, through an algebraic generalization of Prucnal's substitution. Finally we study in depth dual i-discriminator quasivarieties in which a particular instance of Prucnal's substitution is used to prove that if each fundamental operation commutes with the i-discriminator, then it is primitive.

Abstract:A quasivariety K of algebras has the joint embedding property (JEP) iff it is generated by a single algebra A. It is structurally complete iff the free countably generated algebra in K can serve as A. A consequence of this demand, called "passive structural completeness" (PSC), is that the nontrivial members of K all satisfy the same existential positive sentences. We prove that if K is PSC then it still has the JEP, and if it has the JEP and its nontrivial members lack trivial subalgebras, then its relatively simple members all belong to the universal class generated by one of them. Under these conditions, if K is relatively semisimple then it is generated by one K-simple algebra. It is a minimal quasivariety if, moreover, it is PSC but fails to unify some finite set of equations. We also prove that a quasivariety of finite type, with a finite nontrivial member, is PSC iff its nontrivial members have a common retract. The theory is then applied to the variety of De Morgan monoids, where we isolate the sub(quasi)varieties that are PSC and those that have the JEP, while throwing fresh light on those that are structurally complete. The results illuminate the extension lattices of intuitionistic and relevance logics.

Abstract:In our previous paper [31], we show that all primeQ-Fano 3-folds X with only 1/2(1, 1, 1)-singularities in certain 5 classes can be embedded as linear sections into bigger dimensionalQ-Fano varieties called key varieties; each key variety is constructed from data of the Sarkisov link starting from the blow-up at one 1/2(1, 1, 1)-singularity of X . In this paper, we introduce varieties associated with the key varieties which are dual in a certain sense. As an application, we interpret a fundamental part of the Sarkisov link for each X as a linear section of the dual variety. In a natural context describing the variety dual to the key variety of X of genus 5 with one 1/2(1, 1, 1)-singularity, we also characterize a general canonical curve of genus 9 with a g 7 2 .

Abstract:It is introduced the concept of a quasi-king space, which is a natural generalisation of a king space. In the realm of suborderable spaces, king spaces are precisely the compact spaces, so are the quasi-king spaces. In contrast, quasi-king spaces are more flexible in handling coarser selection topologies. The main purpose of this paper is to show that a weakly orderable space is quasi-king if and only if all of its coarser selection topologies are compact.

Abstract:Category theory is a branch of mathematics that provides a formal framework for understanding the relationship between mathematical structures. To this end, a category not only incorporates the data of the desired objects, but also "morphisms", which capture how different objects interact with each other. Category theory has found many applications in mathematics and in computer science, for example in functional programming. Double categories are a natural generalization of categories which incorporate the data of two separate classes of morphisms, allowing a more nuanced representation of relationships and interactions between objects. Similar to category theory, double categories have been successfully applied to various situations in mathematics and computer science, in which objects naturally exhibit two types of morphisms. Examples include categories themselves, but also lenses, petri nets, and spans. While categories have already been formalized in a variety of proof assistants, double categories have received far less attention. In this paper we remedy this situation by presenting a formalization of double categories via the proof assistant Coq, relying on the Coq UniMath library. As part of this work we present two equivalent formalizations of the definition of a double category, an unfolded explicit definition and a second definition which exhibits excellent formal properties via 2-sided displayed categories. As an application of the formal approach we establish a notion of univalent double category along with a univalence principle: equivalences of univalent double categories coincide with their identities

Derived categories of Quot schemes on smooth curves and tautological bundles

Abstract:We define a categorical action of the shifted quantum loop group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ on the derived categories of Quot schemes of finite length quotient sheaves on a smooth projective curve. As an application, we obtain a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories of Quot schemes, of representation theoretic origin. We use this decomposition to calculate the cohomology of interesting tautological vector bundles over the Quot scheme.

Abstract:A quasivariety is called relative congruence principal if, for every algebra , every compact -congruence on A is a principal -congruence. We characterize relative congruence principal quasivarieties in terms of one identity and two quasi-identities. We will use the characterization to show that there exists a continuum of relative congruence principal quasivarieties of algebras of a signature , provided contains at least one operation of arity greater than 1. Several examples are provided.

Abstract:We categorify a coideal subalgebra of the quantum group of sl(2r+1) by introducing a 2-category analogous to the one defined by Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier, and show that self-dual indecomposable 1-morphisms categorify the canonical basis of this algebra. This allows us to define a categorical action of this coideal algebra on the categories of modules over cohomology rings of partial flag varieties and on the category O of type B/C.
