Abstract:In this paper we study the effect of rotation on nonlinear wave phenomena in weakly dispersive media modeled by the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the real line. It is well known that smoothing in the case of the KdV equation with periodic boundary conditions is a result of the presence of high frequency waves that weaken the nonlinearity through time averaging, \cite{bit}, \cite{et1}. High frequency interactions through normal form transformations can be thought of as adding a fast rotating term in certain toy PDE models that arrest the development of singularities, \cite{bit}. It is crucial for this phenomena that the zero Fourier mode can be removed due to the conservation of the mean. On the real line this mechanism breaks down as the resonance sets close to zero frequency are sizable and normal form transformations are not useful, \cite{imt}, and hence smoothing fails. The model we study is a perturbation of the KdV equation on a rotating frame of reference. A combination of a suitable normal form transformation along with the restricted norm method of Bourgain \cite{Bou2} implies smoothing on the real line.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the smooth estimation problem of weakly nonlinear internal waves in a rotating ocean. Specifically, the author has studied a variant of the Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) equation under the influence of rotation and explored the smoothing effect of the nonlinear part of this variant on the real line. The KdV equation is a partial differential equation widely used to describe the propagation of shallow water waves, and the model studied in this paper is a perturbed form of the standard KdV equation, taking into account the influence of the earth's rotation on the waves. The main purpose of the paper is to prove that when the initial data belongs to the classical Sobolev space, the solution of this nonlinear equation on the real line is smoother than the initial data. This result is of great significance for understanding the local and global behaviors of low - regularity solutions. The nonlinear smoothing phenomenon plays an important role in the study of dispersive partial differential equations, especially when dealing with systems with infinite energy. It helps to obtain long - time - existing solutions and can be used to estimate the high - order Sobolev norms of globally defined solutions. It is mentioned in the paper that for the KdV equation under periodic boundary conditions, the smoothing effect is due to the fact that high - frequency waves weaken the nonlinearity through time - averaging, and this mechanism fails on the real line because the resonance set is significant when approaching zero frequency, making the standard form transformation inapplicable. Therefore, the author introduced a new method, combining an appropriate normal form transformation and Bourgain's restricted norm method, to prove the existence of the smoothing effect on the real line. This finding has important theoretical value for understanding and predicting nonlinear wave phenomena in a rotating ocean.
