Abstract:In this paper, a characterization of normed barrelled spaces is given, as well as a similar characterization of rings of sets with the Nikodym Property. Finally, a condition that is equivalent to a Banach space having a separable quotient is discussed.

Abstract:We prove that there is a normed barrelled space with dimension $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$, which denotes the smallest cardinality of a non-meager subset of $\mathbb R$. Consequently, it is consistent with $\mathsf{ZFC}$ that there is a normed barrelled space with dimension $<\!\mathfrak{c}$. This answers a question of Sánchez Ruiz and Saxon. This is a special case of a more general theorem: for every infinite cardinal $\kappa$, every Banach space with density character $\kappa$ contains a barrelled subspace with dimension $\mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$. We also prove that if the dual of a Banach space does not contain $c_0$ or $\ell^p$ for any $p \geq 1$, then that spaces does not have a barrelled subspaces with dimension $<\!\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal N)$, which denotes the smallest cardinality of a collection of Lebesgue null sets covering $\mathbb R$. In particular, it is consistent with $\mathsf{ZFC}$ that no classical Banach spaces contain barrelled subspaces with dimension $\mathfrak{b}$. This partly answers another question of Sánchez Ruiz and Saxon.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to clarify the properties of semi-barrelled spaces (also called countably quasi-barrelled spaces in the literature). These spaces were studied by several authors, in particular in the classical book of N. Bourbaki "Espaces vectoriels topologiques". However, six incorrect statements can be found in this reference. In particular: a Hausdorff and quasi-complete semi-barrelled space is complete, a semi-barrelled, semi-reflexive space is complete, a locally convex hull of semi-barrelled semi-reflexive spaces is semi-reflexive, a locally convex hull of semi-barrelled reflexive spaces is reflexive. We show through counterexamples that these statements are false. To conclude, we show how these false claims can be corrected and we collect some properties of semi-barrelled spaces.

Abstract:Some properties of the (normed) dual Hom-functor $D$ and its iterations $D^n$ are exhibited. For instance: $D$ turns every canonical embedding (in the second dual space) into a retraction (of the third dual onto the first one); $D$ rises the countably infinite (algebraic) dimension only; $D$ does not change the finite quotient shape type. By means of that, the finite quotient shape classification of normed vectorial spaces is completely solved. As a consequence, two extension type theorems are derived.

Abstract:A topological space $Y$ has the property (B) of Banakh if there is a countable family $\{A_n:n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ of closed nowhere dense subsets of $Y$ absorbing all compact subsets of $Y$. In this note we show that the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ with the topology of pointwise convergence, fails to satisfy the property (B) if and only if the space $X$ has the following property $(\kappa)$: every sequence of disjoint finite subsets of $X$ has a subsequence with point--finite open expansion. Additionally, we provide an analogous characterization for the compact--open topology on $C(X)$. Finally, we give examples of Tychonoff spaces $X$ whose all bounded subsets are finite, yet $X$ fails to have the property $(\kappa)$. This answers a question of Tkachuk.

Abstract:For classes of topological vector spaces, we analyze under which conditions open-mapping, continuous-inverse, and closed-graph properties are equivalent. Here, closure under quotients with closed subspaces and closure under closed graphs are sufficient. We show that the class of barreled Ptak spaces is exactly the largest class of locally-convex topological vector spaces, which contains all Banach spaces, is closed under quotients with closed subspaces, is closed under closed graphs, is closed under continuous images, and for which an open-mapping theorem, a continuous-inverse theorem, and a closed-graph theorem holds. An analogous, weaker result also holds for the strictly larger class of barreled infra-Ptak spaces.

Abstract:General $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms are an important class of Minkowski norms which contains the original $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. In this note, by studying the behavior of the Darboux curves of the indicatrix, we give a characterization of 3-dimensional general $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. By studying the isoperimetric properties of the indicatrix, as well as the isoperimetric inequalities in a Minkowski space, we give some global geometric quantities which characterizes Randers norms of arbitrary dimensions.

A characterisation for the category of Hilbert spaces

Abstract:The categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces with bounded linear maps have received purely categorical characterisations by Chris Heunen and Andre Kornell. These characterisations are achieved through Solèr's theorem, a result which shows that certain orthomodularity conditions on a Hermitian space over an involutive division ring result in a Hilbert space with the division ring being either the reals, complexes or quaternions. The characterisation by Heunen and Kornell makes use of a monoidal structure, which in turn excludes the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces. We provide an alternative characterisation without the assumption of monoidal structure on the category. This new approach not only gives a new characterisation of the categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces, but also the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:We define a parameter dependent notion of stability for principal bundles with a certain local decoration, which generalizes both parabolic and level structures, and construct their coarse moduli space. A necessary technical step is the construction of the moduli space of tuples of vector bundles with a global and a local decoration, which we call decorated tumps. We introduce a notion of asymptotic stability for decorated tumps and show, that stable decorated principal bundles can be described as asymptotically stable decorated tumps.

Isometric Representations of Calibrated Ordered Spaces on $C(X)$

Abstract:The problem of characterizing normed ordered spaces which admit a representation in the algebraic, order and norm sense as a subspace of $C(X)$, the space of all continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space is a classical problem that has been considered by many authors. In this article we consider the more general case of calibrated ordered spaces, that is, ordered spaces with a specified family of seminorms generating its topology. For such spaces equivalent conditions on representability as a subspace of $C(X)$ for some locally compact Hausdorff space $X$, in the algebraic, order and seminorm sense are stated and proved. Some characterizations appear to be new even in the normed case. As an application of the main theorem, we state and prove a characterization of norm additivity property of two positive functionals.

Abstract:In this paper we show how some metric properties of the unit sphere of a normed space can help to approach a solution to Tingley's problem. In our main result we show that if an onto isometry between the spheres of strictly convex spaces is the identity when restricted to some relative open subset, then it is the identity. This implies that an onto isometry between the unit spheres of strictly convex finite dimensional spaces is linear if and only it is linear on a relative open set. We prove the same for arbitrary two-dimensional spaces and obtain that every two-dimensional, non strictly convex, normed space has the Mazur-Ulam Property. We also include some other less general, yet interesting, results, along with a generalisation of curvature to normed spaces.

Abstract:We define the ($w^\ast$-) boundedness property and the ($w^\ast$-) surjectivity property for sets in normed spaces. We show that these properties are pairwise equivalent in complete normed spaces by characterizing them in terms of a category-like property called ($w^\ast$-) thickness. We give examples of interesting sets having or not having these properties. In particular, we prove that the tensor product of two $w^\ast$-thick sets in $\Xastast$ and $\Yast$ is a $w^\ast$-thick subset in $L(X,Y)^\ast$ and obtain as a concequense that the set $w^\ast -exp\:B_{K(l_2)^\ast}$ is $w^\ast$-thick.

Abstract:Given a graded ample, Hausdorff groupoid $G$, and an involutive field $K$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_K(G)$. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ under which the annihilator of any graded ideal of $A_K(G)$ is generated by a homogeneous projection. This property is called graded quasi-Baer $\ast$. We use the Steinberg algebra model to characterize graded quasi-Baer $\ast$ Leavitt path algebras.

Abstract:We introduce the space of holomorphic growth spaces with values in a Banach lattice. We provide norm and essential norm estimates of the embedding operator, and we completely characterize the bounded and compact embeddings of the growth spaces using vector-valued Carleson measures. As an application, we prove a characterization of weighted composition operators.

That is, for any complex normed space Y and every surjective mapping satisfying where is the unit circle of the complex plane, there exists a function such that is a linear or anti-linear isometry. Abstract:Guo and the second author have shown that the closure [I] in the Drury–Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal I in C[z1,…,zn] is essentially normal. In this note, the authors extend this result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten p-class for p>n. The same is true for modules generated by polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Further, the maximal ideal space XI of the resulting C⁎-algebra for the quotient module is shown to be contained in Z(I)∩∂Bn, where Z(I) is the zero variety for I, and to contain all points in ∂Bn that are limit points of Z(I)∩Bn. Finally, the techniques introduced enable one to study a certain class of weight Bergman spaces on the ball.
A Dyadic Approach to Weak Characterizations of Function Spaces

Abstract:Weak-type quasi-norms are defined using the mean oscillation or the mean of a function on dyadic cubes, providing discrete analogues and variants of the corresponding quasi-norms on the upper half-space previously considered in the literature. Comparing the resulting function spaces to known function spaces such as $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\rn)$, $\JNp$, $\Lp$ and weak-$\Lp$ gives new embeddings and characterizations of these spaces. Examples are provided to prove the sharpness of the results.

Abstract:We show that norms on certain Banach spaces $X$ can be approximated uniformly, and with arbitrary precision, on bounded subsets of $X$ by $C^{\infty}$ smooth norms and polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that this holds for any equivalent norm on $c_0(\Gamma)$, where $\Gamma$ is an arbitrary set. We also give a necessary condition for the existence of a polyhedral norm on a weakly compactly generated Banach space, which extends a well-known result of Fonf.

Abstract:Abstract Given a finite group $G$, a central subgroup $H$ of $G$, and an operator space $X$ equipped with an action of $H$ by complete isometries, we construct an operator space $X_{G}$ equipped with an action of $G$ that is unique under a “reasonable” condition. This generalizes the operator space complexification $X_{c}$ of $X$. As a linear space $X_{G}$ is the space obtained from inducing the representation of $H$ to $G$ (in the sense of Frobenius). Indeed a main achievement of our paper is the induced representation construction in the category of operator spaces. This has been hitherto elusive even for Banach spaces since it is not clear how to norm the induced space. We show that for a large class of group actions the induced space has a unique operator space norm.
