Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
On the Bernstein-Zelevinsky classification and epsilon factors in families

Abstract:We define a certain Hecke theoretic notion of family of smooth admissible representations of $GL_n(F)$, or of products of such groups, where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. While this notion of family is rather weak a priori, we show that it implies strong rigidity properties for the Bernstein-Zelevinsky presentations of the members of such families, as well as for the variation of their epsilon factors (attached to arbitrary functorial lifts). Examples of such families come often from the theory of eigenvarieties, and in this case our results imply analyticity properties for the epsilon factors of the members of these families.

Abstract:Let F be an archimedean local field and let E be (resp. a quadratic extension of F ). We prove that an irreducible generic (resp. nearly tempered) representation of is distinguished if and only if its Rankin-Selberg (resp. Asai) L -function has an exceptional pole of level zero at 0. Further, we deduce a necessary condition for the ramification of such representations using the theory of weak test vectors developed by Humphries and Jo.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some generalizations of the classical Hasse-Davenport product relation for certain arithmetic factors defined on p-adic fields, among them one finds the epsilon-factors appearing in Tate's thesis. We then show that these generalizations are equivalent to some representation theoretic identities relating the determinant of ramified local coefficients matrices defined for coverings of SL(2,F) to Plancherel measures and gamma-factors.

Abstract:In this paper we suppose G is a finite group acting tamely on a regular projective curve X over Z and V is an orthogonal representation of G of dimension 0 and trivial determinant. Our main result determines the sign of the $\epsilon$-constant $\epsilon(X/G,V)$ in terms of data associated to the archimedean place and to the crossing points of irreducible components of finite fibers of X, subject to certain standard hypotheses about these fibers.
On modular representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a local non-archimedean field

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a local non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We extend the results of Lapid and Mínguez concerning $\square$-irreducible representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathrm{F})$ to representations over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$. As applications, we compute the Godement-Jacquet $L$-factor for any smooth irreducible representation over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ and show that the local factors of a representation agree with the ones of its $\mathrm{C}$-parameter defined by Kurinczuk and Matringe. Moreover, we reprove that the classification of irreducible representations via multisegments due to Vignéras and Mínguez-Sécherre is indeed exhaustive without using the classification of Ariki and Mathas of simple modules of Hecke algebras. Finally, we characterize the irreducible constituents of certain parabolically induced representations, as was already done by Zelevinsky over $\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:Let us consider the symmetric square transfer of the automorphic representation $\pi$ associated to a modular form $f \in S_k(N,\epsilon)$. In this article, we study the variation of the epsilon factor of ${\mathrm{sym}}^2(\pi)$ under twisting in terms of the local Weil-Deligne representation at each prime $p$. As an application, we detect the possible types of the symmetric square transfer of the local representation at $p$. Furthermore, as the conductor of ${\mathrm{sym}}^2(\pi)$ is involved in the variation number, we compute it in terms of $N$.

Abstract:We obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the cuspidal automorphic forms for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a number field, whose archimedean local representations are not tempered. More precisely, we prove the following result. Let $F$ be a number field and $\mathbb{A}_{F}$ be the ring of adeles of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}_{F}$ be the ring of integers of $F$. Abstract:We study the ramification of fierce cyclic Galois extensions of a local field $K$ of characteristic zero with a one-dimensional residue field of characteristic $p>0$. Using Kato's theory of the refined Swan conductor, we associate to such an extension a ramification datum, consisting of a sequence of pairs $(\delta_i,\omega_i)$, where $\delta_i$ is a positive rational number and $\omega_i$ a differential form on the residue field of $K$. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions on such sequences to occur as a ramification datum of a fierce cyclic extension of $K$.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant, the conductor exponent, of a generic irreducible Casselman–Wallach representation of , where F is an archimedean local field, that quantifies the extent to which this representation may be ramified. We also determine a distinguished vector, the newform, occurring with multiplicity one in this representation, with the complexity of this vector measured in a natural way by the conductor exponent. Finally, we show that the newform is a test vector for and Rankin–Selberg integrals when the second representation is unramified. This theory parallels an analogous nonarchimedean theory due to Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika; combined, this completes a global theory of newforms for automorphic representations of over number fields. By-products of the proofs include new proofs of Stade's formulæ and a new resolution of the test vector problem for archimedean Godement–Jacquet zeta integrals.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the action of (ramified and unramified) Hecke operators on automorphic forms for the function field of the projective line defined over a finite field and for the group GL_2. We first compute the dimension of the Hecke eigenspaces for every generator of the unramified Hecke algebra. Thus, we consider the ramification in a point of degree one and describe explicitly the action of certain ramified Hecke operators on automorphic forms. Moreover, for those ramified Hecke operators, we also compute the dimensions of its eigenspaces. We finish the article considering more general ramifications, namely, those one attached to a closed point of higher degree.

Abstract:We prove that the Mazur-Tate elements of an eigenform $f$ sit inside the Fitting ideals of the corresponding dual Selmer groups along the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension (up to scaling by a single constant). Our method begins with the construction of local cohomology classes built via the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence. From these classes, we build algebraic analogues of the Mazur-Tate elements which we directly verify sit in the appropriate Fitting ideals. Using Kato's Euler system and explicit reciprocity laws, we prove that these algebraic elements divide the corresponding Mazur-Tate elements, implying our theorem.

Unramifiedness of Galois Representations Arising from Hilbert Modular Surfaces

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak{p}}$ acting on $(\text{mod}\,p^{m})$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of Calegari and Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight $\mathbf{1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]=2$ . Some partial and some conjectural results are obtained when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]>2$ .
On integral aspects of Asai periods and Euler systems for $\mathrm{Res}_{E/\mathbf{Q}}\mathrm{GL}_2$

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be a totally real quadratic field. Using unramified harmonic analysis in Hecke modules, we study the $\ell$-adic integral behavior of the (unramified part of the) Asai period attached to a Hilbert modular form for $E$, when evaluated on arbitrary integral test data in the sense of Loeffler. Using the same representation-theoretic framework, we also prove the conjectured integral behavior of local factors appearing in tame norm relations, between any collection of integral motivic Asai-Flach classes in the recipe of Loeffler-Skinner-Zerbes. Finally, specializing to one such specific integral collection, we obtain the most general version of the Asai-Flach Euler system tame norm relations, extending a result of Grossi.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. Let $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ be irreducible Arthur type representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ respectively. We study Ext branching laws when $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ are products of discrete series representations and their Aubert-Zelevinsky duals. We obtain an Ext analogue of the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture in this case.

The authors previously proved that the number d d of isomorphism classes of (nonsemisimple, reducible) residual representations ρ ̄ {\overline \rho } giving rise to lines in H H which are modular by some ρ f \rho _f (also unramified outside Σ \Sigma ) satisfies d ≥ n := dim F ⁡ H d \geq n:= \dim _{\mathbf {F}} H . This was proved under the assumption that the order of a congruence module is greater than or equal to that of a divisible Selmer group. Weak abelian direct summands and irreducibility of Galois representations

Abstract:Let $\rho_\ell$ be a semisimple $\ell$-adic representation of a number field $K$ that is unramified almost everywhere. We introduce a new notion called weak abelian direct summands of $\rho_\ell$ and completely characterize them, for example, if the algebraic monodromy of $\rho_\ell$ is connected. If $\rho_\ell$ is in addition $E$-rational for some number field $E$, we prove that the weak abelian direct summands are locally algebraic (and thus de Rham). We also show that the weak abelian parts of a connected semisimple Serre compatible system form again such a system. Using our results on weak abelian direct summands, when $K$ is totally real and $\rho_\ell$ is the three-dimensional $\ell$-adic representation attached to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic, not necessarily polarizable representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{A}_K)$ together with an isomorphism $\mathbb{C}\simeq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$, we prove that $\rho_\ell$ is irreducible. We deduce in this case also some $\ell$-adic Hodge theoretic properties of $\rho_\ell$ if $\ell$ belongs to a Dirichlet density one set of primes.
