Abstract:Degenerate Chenciner bifurcation in generic discrete-time dynamical systems is studied in this work. While the non-degenerate Chenciner bifurcation can be described by 2 bifurcation diagrams, the degeneracy we studied in this work gives rise to 32 different bifurcation diagrams.

Abstract:Generic results for degenerate Chenciner (generalized Neimark-Sacker) bifurcation are obtained in the present work. The bifurcation arises in two-dimensional discrete-time systems with two independent parameters. We define in this work a new transformation of parameters, which enables the study of the bifurcation when the degeneracy occurs. By the four bifurcation diagrams we obtain, new behaviors hidden by the degeneracy are brought to light.

Abstract:The development of bifurcation is reviewed and the research status of bifurcation phenomena in DC-DC converter is summarized.The paper also introduces the basic theory of static bifurcation and dynamic bifurcation and three modeling methods in common use: the state-space average method,the frequency mapping method and the sampled-data method.The sampled-data method is more systematic and more accurate than the others.Finally,the simulation and experiment of an example explain the validity of the above modeling methods.

Abstract:The stability and the two-parameter bifurcation of a two-dimensional discrete Gierer–Meinhardt system are investigated in this paper. The analysis is carried out both theoretically and numerically. It is found that the model can exhibit codimension-two bifurcations ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] strong resonances) for certain critical values at the positive fixed point. The normal forms are obtained by using a series of affine transformations and bifurcation theory. Numerical simulations including bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits and basins of attraction are conducted to validate the theoretical predictions, which can also display some interesting and complex dynamical behaviors.
Bifurcation analysis of multiple limit cycles created in boundary equilibrium bifurcations in hybrid systems

Abstract:A boundary equilibrium bifurcation (BEB) in a hybrid dynamical system occurs when a regular equilibrium collides with a switching surface in phase space. This causes a transition to a pseudo-equilibrium embedded within the switching surface, but limit cycles (LCs) and other invariant sets can also be created and the nature of these is not well understood for systems with more than two dimensions. This work treats two codimension-two scenarios in hybrid systems of any number of dimensions, where the number of small-amplitude limit cycles bifurcating from a BEB changes. The first scenario involves a limit cycle (LC) with a Floquet multiplier $1$ and for nearby parameter values the BEB creates a pair of limit cycles. The second scenario involves a limit cycle with a Floquet multiplier $-1$ and for nearby parameter values the BEB creates a period-doubled solution. Both scenarios are unfolded in a general setting, showing that typical two-parameter bifurcation diagrams have a curve of saddle-node or period-doubling bifurcations emanating transversally from a curve of BEBs at the codimension-two point. The results are illustrated with three-dimensional examples and an eight-dimensional airfoil model. Detailed computational results show excellent agreement to the unfolding theory and reveal further interesting dynamical features that remain to be explored.

Abstract:A method for seeking main bifurcation parameters of a class of nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed. The method is based on the effects of parametric variation of dynamical systems on eigenvalues of the Frechet matrix. The singularity theory is used to study the engineering unfolding (EU) and the universal unfolding (UU) of an arch structure model, respectively. Unfolding parameters of EU are combination of concerned physical parameters in actual engineering, and equivalence of unfolding parameters and physical parameters is verified. Transient sets and bifurcation behaviors of EU and UU are compared to illustrate that EU can reflect main bifurcation characteristics of nonlinear systems in engineering. The results improve the understanding and the scope of applicability of EU in actual engineering systems when UU is difficult to be obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, the stability and bifurcations of a new discrete chaotic map based on gene regulatory network are studied. Firstly, the existence and stability conditions of the fixed points are given. Secondly, the conditions for existence of three cases of codimension-one bifurcations (fold bifurcation, flip bifurcation and Neimark–Sacker bifurcation) are derived by using the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. Then, the conditions for the occurrence of codimension-two bifurcation (fold–flip bifurcation, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 strong resonance) are investigated by using several variable substitutions and introduction of new parameters. Meanwhile, these bifurcation curves are returned to the original variables and parameters to express for easy verification. The corresponding numerical simulations and numerical continuation results not only show the validity of the proposed results, but also exhibit the interesting and complex dynamical behaviors. Finally, some initial conditions and two-parameter spaces analysis are given numerically. The local attraction basins and two-parameter space plots display interesting dynamical behaviors of the discrete system operating with different integral step size and other parameters changing.
Degenerate homoclinic bifurcations in complex dimension 2

Abstract:Unfolding homoclinic tangencies is the main source of bifurcations in 2-dimensional (real or complex) dynamics. When studying this phenomenon, it is common to assume that tangencies are quadratic and unfold with positive speed. Adapting to the complex setting an argument of Takens, we show that any 1-parameter family of 2-dimensional holomorphic diffeomorphisms unfolding an arbitrary non-persistent homoclinic tangency contains such quadratic tangencies. Combining this with recent results of Avila-Lyubich-Zhang and former results in collaboration with Lyubich, this yields the abundance of robust homoclinic tangencies in the bifurcation locus for complex Hénon maps. We also study bifurcations induced by families with persistent tangencies, which provide another approach to the complex Newhouse phenomenon.

Abstract:We consider the non-generic family of 3D piecewise linear systems, with a discontinuity plane that have two parallel tangency lines, such that the region between them is the sliding region. It is known that the change of stability of the sliding region gives rise to the called pseudo-Hopf bifurcation. The stability of the crossing limit cycle that emerges from this bifurcation mechanism is characterized by two control parameters. In this document we consider one of these control parameters as a bifurcation parameter and establish the existence of a curve of saddle–node bifurcation points for crossing limit cycles. When we put together this two bifurcation mechanisms in a two-parametric unfolding, we obtain the called pseudo-Bautin bifurcation , because the local geometry of the bifurcation curves in the bifurcation diagram is the same as the Bautin bifurcation for smooth dynamical systems. Finally, we apply this result to state feedback control systems.

Abstract:We study a generic model for the interaction of negative delayed feedback and periodic forcing that was first introduced by Ghil et al. in the context of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate system. This model takes the form of a delay differential equation and has been shown in previous work to be capable of producing complicated dynamics, which is organised by resonances between the external forcing and dynamics induced by feedback. For certain parameter values, we observe in simulations the sudden disappearance of (two-frequency dynamics on) tori. This can be explained by the folding of invariant tori and their associated resonance tongues. It is known that two smooth tori cannot simply meet and merge; they must actually break up in complicated bifurcation scenarios that are organised within so-called resonance bubbles first studied by Chenciner. We identify and analyse such a Chenciner bubble in order to understand the dynamics at folds of tori. We conduct a bifurcation analysis of the Chenciner bubble by means of continuation software and dedicated simulations, whereby some bifurcations involve tori and are detected in appropriate two-dimensional projections associated with Poincaré sections. We find close agreement between the observed bifurcation structure in the Chenciner bubble and a previously suggested theoretical picture. As far as we are aware, this is the first time the bifurcation structure associated with a Chenciner bubble has been analysed in a delay differential equation and, in fact, for a flow rather than an explicit map. Following our analysis, we briefly discuss the possible role of folding tori and Chenciner bubbles in the context of tipping.

Abstract:Bifurcation analysis collects techniques for characterizing the dependence of certain classes of solutions of a dynamical system on variations in problem parameters. Common solution classes of interest include equilibria and periodic orbits, the number and stability of which may vary as parameters vary. Continuation techniques generate continuous families of such solutions in the combined state and parameter space, e.g., curves (branches) of periodic orbits or surfaces of equilibria. Their advantage over simulation-based approaches is the ability to map out such families independently of the dynamic stability of the equilibria or periodic orbits. Bifurcation diagrams represent families of equilibria and periodic orbits as curves or surfaces in appropriate coordinate systems. Special points, such as bifurcations, are often highlighted in such diagrams. This article provides an illustration of this paradigm of synergy between theoretical derivations and computational analysis for several characteristic examples of bifurcation analysis in commonly encountered classes of problems. General theoretical principles are deduced from these illustrations and collected for the reader's subsequent reference.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the results of a phase topology research on a generalized mathematical model, which covers such two problems as dynamics of two point vortices enclosed in a harmonic trap in a Bose-Einstein condensate and dynamics of two point vortices bounded by a circular region in an ideal fluid. New bifurcation diagrams are obtained and three-into-one and four-into-one tori bifurcations are observed for some values of the model's physical parameters. The presence of such bifurcations in the integrable model of vortex dynamics with positive intensities indicates a complex transition and a connection between bifurcation diagrams in both limiting cases. In this paper, we analytically derive the equations, that define the parametric family of the generalized model's bifurcation diagrams, including bifurcation diagrams of the specified limiting cases. The dynamics of the general case's bifurcation diagram is shown, using its implicit parametrization. The stable bifurcation diagram, related to the problem of dynamics of two vortices bounded by a circular region in an ideal fluid, is observed for particular values of parameters.

Abstract:We present a method for the complete analysis of the dynamics of dissipative Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) undergoing a pitchfork bifurcation. We apply our technique to the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky PDE on the line to obtain a computer-assisted proof of the creation of two symmetric branches of non-symmetric fixed points and heteroclinic connections between the symmetric fixed point and the new ones. The range of parameters is given explicitly and is large enough to allow for the rigorous continuation of the fixed points and heteroclinic connections created during the bifurcation.

Abstract:In the analysis of parametrized nonautonomous evolutionary equations, bounded entire solutions are natural candidates for bifurcating objects. Appropriate explicit and sufficient conditions for such branchings, however, require to combine contemporary functional analytical methods from the abstract bifurcation theory for Fredholm operators with tools originating in dynamical systems. This paper establishes alternatives classifying the shape of global bifurcating branches of bounded entire solutions to Carathéodory differential equations. Our approach is based on the parity associated to a path of index 0 Fredholm operators, the global Evans function as a recent tool in nonautonomous bifurcation theory and suitable topologies on spaces of Carathéodory functions.

Abstract:We classify all bifurcation phenomena of the flow near a transcritical singularity in planar singularly perturbed differential systems that do not have a breaking parameter via qualitative analysis and blow‐up technique. Here, the directional blown up vector fields can have several singularities and no first integral that are different from those in the literatures. The obtained local bifurcations are also illustrated by numerical simulations through a modified Leslie–Gower model, whose global dynamics is thereby obtained.

Abstract:In this note, by using the theory of bifurcation and Lyapunov function, one performs a qualitative analysis on a novel four-dimensional unified hyperchaotic Lorenz-type system (UHLTS), including stability, pitchfork bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycle, ultimate bound estimation, global exponential attractive set, heteroclinic orbit and so on. Numerical simulations not only are consistent with the results of theoretical analysis, but also illustrate singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles with distinct geometrical structures and nearby hyperchaotic attractors in the case of small b > 0, i.e. conjugate hyperchaotic Lorenz-type attractors (CHCLTA) and nearby a short-duration transient of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles approaching infinity or singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles consisting of normally hyperbolic saddle-foci and stable node-foci, etc. In particular, by a linear scaling, a possibly new forming mechanism behind the creation of well-known hyperchaotic attractor with (a(1), a(2), c, d, e, f, b, p, q) = (-12, 12, 23, -1, -1, 1, 2.1, -6, -0.2), consisting of occurrence of degenerate pitchfork bifurcation at S-z, the change in the stability index of the saddle at the origin as b crosses the null value, explosion of normally hyperbolic stable node-foci, collapse of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles consisting of normally hyperbolic saddle-foci or saddle-nodes, and stable node-foci, is revealed. The findings and results of this paper may provide theoretical support in some future applications, since they improve and complement the known ones.

Abstract:Singular Hopf bifurcation occurs in generic families of vector-fields with two slow variables and one fast variable. Normal forms for this bifurcation depend upon several parameters, and the dynamics displayed by the normal forms is intricate. This paper analyzes a normal form for this bifurcation. It presents extensive diagrams of bifurcations of equilibrium points and periodic orbits that are close to singular Hopf bifurcation. In addition, parameters are determined where there is a tangency between invariant manifolds that are important in the appearance of mixed-mode oscillations in systems near singular Hopf bifurcation. One parameter of the normal form is identified as the primary bifurcation parameter, and the paper presents a catalog of bifurcation sequences that occur as the primary bifurcation parameter is varied. These results are applied to estimate the parameters for the onset of mixed-mode oscillations in a model of chemical oscillations.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The stability and two kinds of bifurcations of a genetic regulatory network are considered in this paper. We have given a complete stability analysis involved in mentioned model. The Hopf bifurcation of codimension 1 and Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension 2 for the nonhyperbolic equilibria of the model is characterized analytically. In order to determine the stability of limit cycle of Hopf bifurcation, the first Lyapunov number is calculated and a numerical example is given to illustrate graphically. Three bifurcation curves related to Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation, namely saddle-node, Hopf and homoclinic bifurcation curves, are given explicitly by calculating a universal unfolding near the cusp. Moreover, the numerical continuation results show that the model has other bifurcation types, including saddle-node and cusp bifurcations. The bifurcation diagram and phase portraits are also given to verify the validity of the theoretical results. These results show that there exists rich bifurcation behavior in the genetic regulatory network.
Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension $3$ in the Gierer-Meinhardt model

Abstract:Bifurcation of the local Gierer-Meinhardt model is analyzed in this paper. It is found that the degenerate Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 3 happens in the model, except that teh saddle-node bifurcation and the Hopf bifurcation. That was not reported in the existing results about this model. The existence of equilibria, their stability, the bifurcation and the induced complicated and interesting dynamics are explored in detail, by using the stability analysis, the normal form method and bifurcation theory. Numerical results are also presented to validate theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper devotes to a detailed bifurcation analysis of a two-dimensional non-invertible map, obtained using a symmetric coupling between one-dimensional logistic maps. The critical normal form coefficients method is employed to detect bifurcations and to explore further critical conditions without explicit reduction to the center manifold. The results show that the two-dimensional map undergoes codimension-one (codim-1) bifurcations such as transcritical, pitchfork, period-doubling, Neimark-Sacker, and codim-2 bifurcations including transcritical-flip, pitchfork-flip, strong resonances 1:2, 1:3, 1:4. For each bifurcation, the critical normal form coefficients are calculated to check the non-degeneracy conditions and predict the bifurcation scenarios around the bifurcation points. To validate the theoretical results, all bifurcation curves of fixed points are plotted with the aid of the numerical continuation method. Weak resonances are also specified by the isoclines on the bi-parameter plane. The results will help in understanding the occurrence and the structure of bifurcation cascades observed in many coupled discrete systems.
