Abstract:We present an overview of results on the question of whether the non-stationary ideal of an uncountable regular cardinal $\kappa$ can be defined by a $\Pi_1$-formula using parameters of hereditary cardinality at most $\kappa$. These results show that this question is deeply connected to several central topics of current research in set theory.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal M_X$ denote the ideal of meager subsets of a topological space $X$. We prove that if $X$ is a completely metrizable space without isolated points, then the smallest cardinality of a non-meager subset of $X$, denoted $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X)$, is exactly $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) = \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$, where $\kappa$ is the minimum weight of a nonempty open subset of $X$. We also characterize the additivity and covering numbers for $\mathcal M_X$ in terms of simple topological properties of $X$. Some bounds are proved and some questions raised concerning the cofinality of $\mathcal M_X$ and the cofinality of the related ideal of nowhere dense subsets of $X$. We also show that if $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space with $\pi$-weight $\kappa$, then $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_X) \leq \mathrm{cf}[\kappa]^\omega \cdot \mathrm{non}(\mathcal M_{\mathbb R})$. This bound for compact Hausdorff spaces is not sharp, in the sense that it is consistent for such a space to have non-meager subsets of even smaller cardinality.

Abstract:Let $\kappa$ be a regular limit cardinal, $\kappa \subseteq A$. We study a notion of $n$-s-stationarity on $\mathcal{P}_{\kappa}(A)$. We construct a sequence of topologies $\langle \tau_0, \tau_1, \dots \rangle $ on $\mathcal{P}_{\kappa}(A)$ characterising the simultaneous reflection of a pair of $n$-s-stationary sets in terms of elements in the base of $\tau_n$. This result constitutes a complete generalisation to the context of $\mathcal{P}_{\kappa}(A)$ of Bagaria's prior characterisation of $n$-simultaneous reflection in terms of derived topologies on ordinals.

Abstract:A function f from reals to reals (f:R->R) is almost continuous (in the sense of Stallings) iff every open set in the plane which contains the graph of f contains the graph of a continuous function. Natkaniec showed that for any family F of continuum many real functions there exists g:R->R such that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Let AA be the smallest cardinality of a family F of real functions for which there is no g:R->R with the property that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Thus Natkaniec showed that AA is strictly greater than the continuum. He asked if anything more could be said. We show that the cofinality of AA is greater than the continuum, c. Moreover, we show that it is pretty much all that can be said about AA in ZFC, by showing that AA can be equal to any regular cardinal between c^+ and 2^c (with 2^c arbitrarily large). We also show that AA = AD where AD is defined similarly to AA but for the class of Darboux functions. This solves another problem of Maliszewski and Natkaniec.

Abstract:We contribute to the study of generalizations of the Perfect Set Property and the Baire Property to subsets of spaces of higher cardinalities, like the power set $P(\lambda)$ of a singular cardinal $\lambda$ of countable cofinality or products $\prod_{i<\omega}\lambda_i$ for a strictly increasing sequence $\langle\lambda_i ~ \vert ~ i<\omega\rangle$ of cardinals. We consider the question under which large cardinal hypotheses classes of definable subsets of these spaces possess such regularity properties, focusing on rank-into-rank axioms and classes of sets definable by $\Sigma_1$-formulas with parameters from various collections of sets. We prove that $\omega$-many measurable cardinals, while sufficient to prove the Perfect Set Property of all $\Sigma_1$-definable sets with parameters in $V_\lambda\cup\{V_\lambda\}$, are not enough to prove it if there is a cofinal sequence in $\lambda$ in the parameters. For this conclusion, the existence of an I2-embedding is enough, but there are parameters in $V_{\lambda+1}$ for which I2 is still not enough. The situation is similar for the Baire Property: under I2 all sets that are $\Sigma_1$-definable using elements of $V_\lambda$ and a cofinal sequence as parameters have the Baire property, but I2 is not enough for some parameter in $V_{\lambda+1}$. Finally, the existence of an I0-embedding implies that all sets that are $\Sigma^1_n$-definable with parameters in $V_{\lambda+1}$ have the Baire property.

Abstract:Intersection models of generic extensions obtained from a commutative projection systems of notions of forcing has recently regained interest, especially in the study of descriptive set theory. Here, we show that it provides a fruitful framework that opens the door to solving some open problems concerning compactness principles of small cardinals. To exemplify, from suitable assumptions, we construct intersection models satisfying ZFC and any of the following: 1. There is a weakly compact cardinal $\kappa$ carrying an indecomposable ultrafilter, yet $\kappa$ is not measurable. This answers a question of Ketonen from the late 1970's. 2. For proper class many cardinals $\lambda$, the least $\lambda$-strongly compact cardinal is singular. This answers a question of Bagaria and Magidor who asked for merely two such cardinals. 3. There is a strongly inaccessible cardinal whose $C$-sequence number is a singular cardinal. This answers a question of Lambie-Hanson and the first author.

Abstract:We study $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable sets (i.e. sets that are equal to the collection of all sets satisfying a certain $\Sigma_1$-formula with parameter $\omega_1$) in the presence of large cardinals. Our results show that the existence of a Woodin cardinal and a measurable cardinal above it imply that no well-ordering of the reals is $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable, the set of all stationary subsets of $\omega_1$ is not $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable and the complement of every $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable Bernstein subset of ${}^{\omega_1}\omega_1$ is not $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable. In contrast, we show that the existence of a Woodin cardinal is compatible with the existence of a $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable well-ordering of $\mathrm{H}({\omega_2})$ and the existence of a $\Delta_1(\omega_1)$-definable Bernstein subset of ${}^{\omega_1}\omega_1$. We also show that, if there are infinitely many Woodin cardinals and a measurable cardinal above them, then there is no $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable uniformization of the club filter on $\omega_1$. Moreover, we prove a perfect set theorem for $\Sigma_1(\omega_1)$-definable subsets of ${}^{\omega_1}\omega_1$, assuming that there is a measurable cardinal and the non-stationary ideal on $\omega_1$ is saturated. The proofs of these results use iterated generic ultrapowers and Woodin's $\mathbb{P}_{\mathrm{max}}$-forcing. Finally, we also prove variants of some of these results for $\Sigma_1(\kappa)$-definable subsets of ${}^{\kappa}\kappa$, in the case where $\kappa$ itself has certain large cardinal properties.

Abstract:We study some connections between definability in generalized descriptive set theory and large cardinals, particularly measurable cardinals and limits thereof, working in ZFC. We show that if $\kappa$ is a limit of measurable cardinals then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ wellorder of a subset of $P(\kappa)$ of length $\geq\kappa^+$; this answers a question of Lücke and Müller. However, in $M_1$, the minimal proper class mouse with a Woodin cardinal, for every uncountable cardinal $\kappa$ which is not a limit of measurables, there is a $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ good wellorder of $H_{\kappa^+}$. If $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ mad family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$, and if also $\mathrm{cof}(\kappa)>\omega$ then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ almost disjoint family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$. However, relative to the consistency of large cardinals, $\Pi_1(\{\kappa\})$ mad families and maximal independent families $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ can exist, when $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables, and even more. We also examine some of the features of $L[U]$, and answer another question of Lücke and Müller, showing that if $\kappa$ is a weakly compact cardinal such that every $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ subset of $P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$ has a subset which is the range of a perfect function, then there is an inner model satisfying "there is a weakly compact limit of measurable cardinals".

Abstract:In the context of generalized descriptive set theory, we systematically compare and analyze various notions of Polish-like spaces and standard $\kappa$-Borel spaces for $\kappa$ an uncountable (regular) cardinal satisfying $\kappa^{<\kappa} = \kappa$. As a result, we obtain a solid framework where one can develop the theory in full generality. We also provide natural characterizations of the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. Some of the results obtained considerably extend previous work from [Coskey-Schlicht 2016, Galeotti 2019, Luecke-Schlicht 2015], and answer some questions contained therein.

Borel complexity of sets of ideal limit points

Abstract:Let $X$ be an uncountable Polish space and let $\mathcal{I}$ be an ideal on $\omega$. A point $\eta \in X$ is an $\mathcal{I}$-limit point of a sequence $(x_n)$ taking values in $X$ if there exists a subsequence $(x_{k_n})$ convergent to $\eta$ such that the set of indexes $\{k_n: n \in \omega\}\notin \mathcal{I}$. Denote by $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ the family of subsets $S\subseteq X$ such that $S$ is the set of $\mathcal{I}$-limit points of some sequence taking values in $X$ or $S$ is empty. In this paper, we study the relationships between the topological complexity of ideals $\mathcal{I}$, their combinatorial properties, and the families of sets $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ which can be attained. On the positive side, we provide several purely combinatorial (not dependind on the space $X$) characterizations of ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for the inclusions and the equalities between $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ and the Borel classes $\Pi^0_1$, $\Sigma^0_2$, and $\Pi^0_3$. As a consequence, we prove that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a $\Pi^0_4$ ideal then exactly one of the following cases holds: $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Pi^0_1$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$ (however we do not have an example of a $\Pi^0_4$ ideal with $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$). In addition, we provide an explicit example of a coanalytic ideal $\mathcal{I}$ for which $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^1_1$. On the negative side, we show that there are no ideals $\mathcal{I}$ such that $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Pi^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=\Sigma^0_3$. We conclude with several open questions.

Abstract:This thesis is divided into three parts, the first and second ones focused on combinatorics and classification problems on discrete and geometrical objects in the context of descriptive set theory, and the third one on generalized descriptive set theory at singular cardinals of countable cofinality. Descriptive Set Theory (briefly: DST) is the study of definable subsets of Polish spaces, i.e., separable completely metrizable spaces. One of the major branches of DST is Borel reducibility, successfully used in the last 30 years to solve and compare many classification problems. One of our goals is the classification of knots, very familiar and tangible objects in everyday life, which also play an important role in modern mathematics. The study of knots and their properties is known as knot theory. Our plan is to gain insight into knots using discrete objects, such as linear and circular orders. This approach was already exploited in [6]. The first part of this work is therefore devoted to countable linear orders and the study of the quasi-order of convex embeddability and its induced equivalence relation. We obtain both combinatorial and descriptive set-theoretic results. We also expand our research to the case of circular orders. Another objective of this first part is to extend the notion of convex embeddability on countable linear orders. We provide a family of quasi-orders of which embeddability is a particular case as well. We study these quasi-orders from a combinatorial point of view and analyse their complexity with respect to Borel reducibility. Furthermore, we extend the analysis of these quasi-orders to the set of uncountable linear orders. The second part of the project deals with classification problems on knots and -manifolds. The goal here is to apply the results obtained in the first part to the study of proper arcs and knots, establishing lower bounds for the complexity of some natural relations between these geometrical objects. We also obtain some combinatorial results which are particularly interesting when we restrict to the set of wild proper arcs and wild knots, classes which haven't received much attention so far. These parts are included in the two preprints [4, 5] in collaboration with my supervisor Alberto Marcone, Luca Motto Ros (University of Torino), and Vadim Weinstein (University of Oulu). The second part of this work also includes the classification of non-compact -manifolds up to homeomorphism (the case of compact -manifolds has already been solved: indeed, there are only countably many -manifolds up to homeomorphism; see [7]), and that of Cantor sets of up to conjugation (answering to Question 5.5 of [3]). Here we resort to algebraic tools. Stone duality gives a neat way to go back-and-forth between totally disconnected Polish spaces and countable Boolean algebras (see [1]). The main ingredient is the Stone space of all ultrafilters on a Boolean algebra. In this work we introduce a weaker concept which we call "blurry filter". Using blurry filters instead of ultrafilters enables one to extend the class of spaces under consideration beyond totally disconnected. As an application of this method, we show that both homeomorphism on non-compact -manifolds and conjugation of Cantor sets in are completely classifiable by countable structures. These results are part of an upcoming paper in collaboration with Vadim Weinstein. The last part of this thesis concerns the natural generalization of descriptive set theory that occurs when countable is replaced by uncountable, called Generalized Descriptive Set Theory (briefly: GDST). In particular, we focus on the case of GDST for a singular cardinal of countable cofinality. The goal here is to study the generalizations of the Perfect Set Property and the Baire Property to subsets of spaces of higher cardinalities, like the power set . We consider the question under which large cardinal hypotheses classes of definable subsets of these spaces possess such regularity properties, focusing on rank-into-rank axioms, like I2, and classes of sets definable by -formulas with parameters from various collections of sets. Cardinal characteristics associated with small subsets of reals

Abstract:Inspired by Bartoszyński's work on small sets, we introduce a new ideal defined by interval partitions on natural numbers and summable sequences of positive reals. Similarly, we present another ideal that relies on Bartoszyński's and Shelah's characterization of $F_\sigma$ measure zero sets. We demonstrate that they are $\sigma$-ideals and provide characterizations of the families of all small sets and the ideal induced by $F_\sigma$ measure zero sets. We also study the cardinal characteristics associated with the introduced ideals. We discuss their connection to Cichoń's diagram and present related consistency results.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the consistency, relative to large cardinals, of the existence of dense ideals on every successor of a regular cardinal simultaneously. Using a consequent transfer principle, we show that in this model there is a $\sigma$-complete, $\aleph_1$-dense ideal on $\aleph_{n+1}$ for every $n < \omega$, answering a question of Foreman. Using this construction we show the consistency of the existence of various irregular ultrafilters on $\omega_n$, the consistency of the Foreman-Laver reflection property for the chromatic number of graphs for all possible pairs of cardinals below $\aleph_\omega$, and the simultaneous consistency of the partition hypotheses $\mathrm{PH}_n(\omega_m)$ for $n < m$.

Narrow systems revisited

Abstract:Motivated by two open questions about two-cardinal tree properties, we introduce and study generalized narrow system properties. The first of these questions asks whether the strong tree property at a regular cardinal $\kappa \geq \omega_2$ implies the Singular Cardinals Hypothesis ($\mathsf{SCH}$) above $\kappa$. We show here that a certain narrow system property at $\kappa$ that is closely related to the strong tree property, and holds in all known models thereof, suffices to imply $\mathsf{SCH}$ above $\kappa$. The second of these questions asks whether the strong tree property can consistenty hold simultaneously at all regular cardinals $\kappa \geq \omega_2$. We show here that the analogous question about the generalized narrow system property has a positive answer. We also highlight some connections between generalized narrow system properties and the existence of certain strongly unbounded subadditive colorings.

Abstract:I establish several inequalities between cardinal characteristics of the continuum. In particular, it is shown that the partition splitting number is not larger than the uniformity of the meagre ideal; not all sets of reals having the cardinality of an (the?) $\varepsilon$-almost bisecting number are of strong measure zero; no fewer sets of strong measure zero than indicated by the statistically reaping number suffice to cover the reals; the pair-splitting number is not smaller than the evasion number; and the subseries number is neither smaller than the pair-splitting number nor than the minimum of the unbounding number and the unbisecting number. Moreover I provide a diagram putting these results into context and give a brief historical account.

Abstract:An interval algebra is a Boolean algebra which is isomorphic to the algebra of finite unions of half-open intervals, of a linearly ordered set. An interval algebra is hereditary if every subalgebra is an interval algebra. We answer a question of M. Bekkali and S. Todorčević, by showing that it is consistent that every $\sigma$-centered interval algebra of size $\mathfrak{b}$ is hereditary. We also show that there is, in ZFC, an hereditary interval algebra of cardinality $\aleph_1.$

Abstract:We present a necessary condition for a pair of $\mathcal{C}(K)$ spaces to be isomorphic in terms of topological properties of Cantor-Bendixon derivatives of $K$. This in particular gives a completely new information about the perfect kernels of such $K$. In the process, we extend known lower estimates of the Banach-Mazur distance between a pair of spaces of continuous functions from the case of scattered compact spaces to a more general setting. Next, we apply this general result to deduce some new information about isomorphisms of spaces of continuous functions over Eberlein compacta of height $\omega+1$. Further, we show that isomorphisms of $\mathcal{C}(K)$ spaces preserve the spread of $K$, and we also prove some new results for pairs of spaces of continuous functions whose Banach-Mazur distance is less than $3$.

Abstract:Definition. Let $\kappa$ be an infinite cardinal, let {X(i)} be a (not necessarily faithfully indexed) set of topological spaces, and let X be the product of the spaces X(i). The $\kappa$-box product topology on X is the topology generated by those products of sets U(i) for which (a) for each i, U(i) is open in X(i); and (b) U(i) = X(i) with fewer than $\kappa$-many exceptions. (Thus, the usual Tychonoff product topology on X is the $\omega$-box topology.) With emphasis on weight, density character, and Souslin number, the authors study and determine the value of several "cardinal invariants" on the space X with its $\kappa$-box topology, in terms of the corresponding invariants of the individual spaces X(i). To the authors' knowledge, this work is the first systematic study of its kind. Some of the results are axiom-sensitive, and some duplicate (and extend, and make precise) earlier work of Hewitt-Marczewski-Pondiczery, of Englking-Karlowicz, of Comfort-Negrepontis, and of Cater-Erdos-Galvin.

Abstract:Let $\kappa$ be a regular cardinal, $\lambda<\kappa$ be a smaller infinite cardinal, and $\mathsf K$ be a $\kappa$-accessible category where colimits of $\lambda$-indexed chains exist. We show that various category-theoretic constructions applied to $\mathsf K$, such as the inserter and the equifier, produce $\kappa$-accessible categories $\mathsf E$ again, and the most obvious expected description of the full subcategory of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf E$ in terms of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf K$ holds true. In particular, if $\mathsf C$ is a $\kappa$-small category, then the category of functors $\mathsf C\rightarrow\mathsf K$ is $\kappa$-accessible, and its $\kappa$-presentable objects are precisely all the functors from $\mathsf C$ to the $\kappa$-presentable objects of $\mathsf K$. We proceed to discuss the preservation of $\kappa$-accessibility by conical pseudolimits, lax and oplax limits, and weighted pseudolimits. The results of this paper go back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our motivation comes from the theory of flat modules and flat quasi-coherent sheaves.

Abstract:A well-known version of Rowbottom's theorem for supercompactness ultrafilters leads naturally to notions of two-cardinal Ramseyness and corresponding normal ideals introduced herein. Generalizing results of Baumgartner [7, 8], Feng [22] and the first author [16, 17], we study the hierarchies associated with a particular version of two-cardinal Ramseyness and a strong version of two-cardinal ineffability, as well as the relationships between these hierarchies and a natural notion of transfinite two-cardinal indescribability.
