Abstract:We introduce a certain renormalized energy of proper maps between conformally compact Einstein manifolds, which is then used to give a holographic description of conformal geodesics on the boundary at infinity, in a way deeply inspired by a work of Fine and Herfray on renormalized area minimization and conformal geodesics.

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We derive the variation formula of the partial derivative-energy and of the partial derivative-energy for a smooth map from a complex Finsler manifold to an Hermitian manifold. Applying the result on a nonlinear elliptic system due to J. Jost and S. T. Yau, we obtain some existence theorems of harmonic maps from strongly Kahler Finsler manifolds to Kahler manifolds. Also, for such maps, we show that the difference between partial derivative-energy and partial derivative-energy is a homotopy invariant.

Abstract:We prove that the renormalized Yang-Mills energy on six dimensional Poincaré-Einstein spaces can be expressed as the bulk integral of a local, pointwise conformally invariant integrand. We show that the latter agrees with the corresponding anomaly boundary integrand in the seven dimensional renormalized Yang-Mills energy. Our methods rely on a generalization of the Chang-Qing-Yang method for computing renormalized volumes of Poincaré-Einstein manifolds, as well as known scattering theory results for Schrödinger operators with short range potentials.

Abstract:We define a renormalized volume for a region in an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein manifold that is bounded by a Graham-Witten minimal surface and the conformal infinity. We prove a Gauss-Bonnet theorem for the renormalized volume, and compute its derivative under variations of the minimal hypersurface.

On Regular Hénon-like Renormalization

Abstract:We develop a renormalization theory of non-perturbative dissipative Hénon-like maps with combinatorics of bounded type. The main novelty of our approach is the incorporation of Pesin theoretic ideas to the renormalization method, which enables us to control the small-scale geometry of dynamics in the higher-dimensional setting. In a prequel to this paper, it is shown that, under certain regularity conditions on the return maps, renormalizations of Hénon-like maps have $\textit{a priori}$ bounds. The current paper is devoted to the applications of this critical estimate. First, we prove that Hénon-like maps converge under renormalization to the same renormalization attractor as for 1D unimodal maps. Second, we show that the necessary and sufficient conditions for renormalization convergence are finite-time checkable. Lastly, we show that every infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like map is $\textit{regularly unicritical}$: there exists a unique orbit of tangencies between strong-stable and center manifolds, and outside a slow-exponentially shrinking neighborhood of this orbit, the dynamics behaves as a uniformly partially hyperbolic system.

Renormalization of Unicritical Diffeomorphisms of the Disk

Abstract:We introduce a class of infinitely renormalizable, unicritical diffeomorphisms of the disk (with a non-degenerate "critical point"). In this class of dynamical systems, we show that under renormalization, maps eventually become Hénon-like, and then converge super-exponentially fast to the space of one-dimensional unimodal maps. We also completely characterize the local geometry of every stable and center manifolds that exist in these systems. The theory is based upon a quantitative reformulation of the Oseledets-Pesin theory yielding a unicritical structure of the maps in question comprising regular Pesin boxes co-existing with "critical tunnels" and "valuable crescents". In forthcoming notes we will show that infinitely renormalizable perturbative Hénon-like maps of bounded type belong to our class.

Abstract:We extend the concept of renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, and show that is continuous for geometrically convergent sequences of hyperbolic structures over an acylindrical 3-manifold $M$ with geometrically finite limit. This allows us to show that the renormalized volume attains its minimum (in terms of the conformal class at $\partial M = S$) at the geodesic class, the conformal class for which the boundary of the convex core is totally geodesic.

Abstract:LetM=ΓG/K be a locally symmetric space of finite volume and rank ≥ 2. We show that any map fromM of weighted finite energy in the sense of Saper can be deformed into a finite energy map. As a consequence such maps can be deformed into totally geodesic ones, and a geometric generalization of Margulis' superrigidity theorem is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of asymptotically flat spacetime in even dimensions $d\geq 4$. We analyze the most general boundary condition and asymptotic symmetry compatible with Penrose's definition of asymptotic null infinity $\mathscr{I}$ through conformal compactification. Following Penrose's prescription and using a minimal version of the Bondi-Sachs gauge, we show that $\mathscr{I}$ is naturally equipped with a Carrollian stress tensor whose radial derivative defines the asymptotic Weyl tensor. This analysis describes asymptotic infinity as a stretched horizon in the conformally compactified spacetime. We establish that charge aspects conservation can be written as Carrollian Bianchi identities for the asymptotic Weyl tensor. We then provide a covariant renormalization for the asymptotic symplectic potential, which results in a finite symplectic flux and asymptotic charges. The renormalization scheme works even in the presence of logarithmic anomalies.

Abstract:Motivated by the theory of harmonic maps on Riemannian surfaces, conformal-harmonic maps between two Riemannian manifolds $M$ and $N$ were introduced in search of a natural notion of harmonicity for maps defined on a general even dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. They are critical points of a conformally invariant energy functional and reassemble the GJMS operators when the target is the set of real or complex numbers. On a four dimensional manifold, conformal-harmonic maps are the conformally invariant counterparts of the intrinsic bi-harmonic maps and a mapping version of the conformally invariant Paneitz operator for functions. In this paper, we consider conformal-harmonic maps from certain locally conformally flat 4-manifolds into spheres. We prove a quantitative uniqueness result for such conformal-harmonic maps as an immediate consequence of convexity for the conformally-invariant energy functional. To this end, we are led to prove a version of second order Hardy inequality on manifolds, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We develop the notion of renormalized energy in Cauchy–Riemann (CR) geometry for maps from a strictly pseudoconvex pseudo-Hermitian manifold to a Riemannian manifold. This energy is a CR invariant functional whose critical points, which we call CR-harmonic maps, satisfy a CR covariant partial differential equation. The corresponding operator coincides on functions with the CR Paneitz operator.

A new conformal quasi-local energy in general relativity

Abstract:We construct new conserved quasi-local energies in general relativity using the formalism developed by \cite{CWY}. In particular, we use the optimal isometric embedding defined in \cite{yau,yau1} to transplant the conformal Killing fields of the Minkowski space back to the $ 2-$ surface of interest in the physical spacetime. For an asymptotically flat spacetime of order $1$, we show that these energies are always finite. Their limit as the total energies of an isolated system is evaluated and a conservation law under Einsteinian evolution is deduced.

Abstract:We develop a renormalization method for holographic entanglement entropy based on area renormalization of entangling surfaces. The renormalized entanglement entropy is derived for entangling surfaces in asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spacetimes in general dimensions and for entangling surfaces in four dimensional holographic renormalization group flows. The renormalized entanglement entropy for disk regions in $AdS_4$ spacetimes agrees precisely with the holographically renormalized action for $AdS_4$ with spherical slicing and hence with the F quantity, in accordance with the Casini-Huerta-Myers map. We present a generic class of holographic RG flows associated with deformations by operators of dimension $3/2 < \Delta < 5/2$ for which the F quantity increases along the RG flow, hence violating the strong version of the F theorem. We conclude by explaining how the renormalized entanglement entropy can be derived directly from the renormalized partition function using the replica trick i.e. our renormalization method for the entanglement entropy is inherited directly from that of the partition function. We show explicitly how the entanglement entropy counterterms can be derived from the standard holographic renormalization counterterms for asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spacetimes.

An Inverse Problem for Renormalized Area: Determining the Bulk Metric with Minimal Surfaces

Abstract:We present an inverse problem which uses the renormalized area functional on minimal submanifolds to recover the expansion of asymptotically hyperbolic, conformally compact metrics which are partially even to high order. We use a rigidity argument to determine the conformal infinity of the metric via the renormalized area. We then consider renormalized volume of perturbations of the hemisphere to determine the higher order terms in the asymptotic expansion of the metric. We prove rigidity when these metrics are log-analytic, and further note that renormalized area determines the obstruction tensor for PE metrics.

Abstract:By introducing the “relative energy”, we develop a new method for finding harmonic maps from noncompact complete Riemannian manifolds with prescribed asympototic behaviour at infinity. This method is an extension of the well known direct method of energy-minimization for compact domains. As an application of our method, we show that the Dirichlet problem at infinity with Hölder continuous boundary data for harmonic maps from a Cartan-Hadarmard manifold with bounded negative curvature into a compact manifold, has a locally minimizing solution which is smooth near infinity.
On conformal biharmonic maps and hypersurfaces

Abstract:In this article we initiate a thorough geometric study of the conformal bienergy functional which consists of the standard bienergy augmented by two additional curvature terms. The conformal bienergy is conformally invariant in dimension four and its precise structure is motivated by the Paneitz operator from conformal geometry. The critical points of the conformal bienergy are called conformal biharmonic maps. Besides establishing a number of basic results on conformal biharmonic maps, we pay special attention to conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces in space forms. For hypersurfaces in spheres, we determine all conformal biharmonic hyperspheres and then we classify all conformal biharmonic generalized Clifford tori. Moreover, in sharp contrast to biharmonic hypersurfaces, we show that there also exist conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces of hyperbolic space, pointing out a fundamental difference between biharmonic and conformal biharmonic hypersurfaces. Finally, we also study the stability of the conformal biharmonic hyperspheres in spheres and explicitly compute their index and nullity. In particular, we obtain that the index of the equator $\mathbb{S}^4$ of $\mathbb{S}^5$ is zero, i.e., it is stable, while the index of the equator $\mathbb{S}^5$ of $\mathbb{S}^6$ is seven.

Volume renormalization of higher-codimension singular Yamabe spaces

Abstract:Given an embedded closed submanifold $\Sigma^n$ in the closed Riemannian manifold $M^{n + k}$, where $k < n + 2$, we define extrinsic global conformal invariants of $\Sigma$ by renormalizing the volume associated to the unique singular Yamabe metric with singular set $\Sigma$. In case $n$ is odd, the renormalized volume is an absolute conformal invariant, while if $n$ is even, there is a conformally invariant energy term given by the integral of a local Riemannian invariant. In particular, the volume gives a global conformal invariant of a knot embedding in the three-sphere. We extend the construction of energies for even $n$ to general codimension by considering formal solutions to the singular Yamabe problem; except that, for each fixed $n$, there are finitely many $k > n + 2$, which we identify, for which the smoothness of the formal solution is obstructed and we obtain instead a pointwise conformal invariant. We compute the new quantities in several cases.

Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Abstract:According to the uniformization theorem, any surface can be conformally mapped into a domain of a constant Gaussian curvature. The conformal factor indicates the local scaling introduced by such a mapping. This process could be used to compute geometric quantities in a simplified flat domain with zero Gaussian curvature. For example, the computation of geodesic distances on a curved surface can be mapped into solving an eikonal equation in a plane weighted by the conformal factor. Solving an eikonal equation on the weighted plane can then be done by regular sampling of the domain using, for example, the celebrated fast marching method (FMM). The connection between the conformal factor on the plane and the surface geometry can be justified analytically. Still, in order to construct consistent numerical solvers that exploit this relation, one needs to prove that the conformal factor is bounded. We provide theoretical bounds of the conformal factor and introduce optimization formulations that control its behavior. It is demonstrated that without such restrictions the numerical results are unboundedly inaccurate. Putting all ingredients in the right order, we introduce a method for computing geodesic distances on a two-dimensional manifold by using the FMM on a weighted flat domain. It is also shown how a metric on a curved domain can be reconstructed by reformulating the nonflat metric restoration problem into a weighted flat domain, again, with bounded weights for consistent results.

Smooth maps minimizing the energy and the calibrated geometry

Abstract:We generalize the notion of calibrated submanifolds to smooth maps and show that the several examples of smooth maps appearing in the differential geometry become the examples of our situation. Moreover, we apply these notion to give the lower bound to the energy of smooth maps in the given homotopy class between Riemannian manifolds, and consider the energy functional which is minimized by the identity maps on the Riemannian manifolds with special holonomy groups.
