Abstract:We derive some combinatorial formulas related to the diagonal Ramsey numbers $R(k)$. Each formula is a statement of the form "$F(n,k) = 0$ if and only if $n \ge R(k)$," where $F(n,k)$ is a combinatorial expression which depends on $n$ and $k$. Our work is closely related to a recent work by De Loera and Wesley.

Abstract:The Ramsey number $R(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove that \[ R(k) \leqslant (4 - \varepsilon)^k \] for some constant $\varepsilon > 0$. This is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres, proved in 1935.

Some remarks on off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$

Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:For k given graphs H 1 , … , H k, k ≥ 2, the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R ( H 1 , … , H k ), is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of H i colored with i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k. Let C m be a cycle of length m , K 1 , n a star of order n + 1 and W n a wheel of order n + 1. In this paper, by using algebraic and probabilistic methods, we first give two lower bounds for ( k + 1 )-color Ramsey number R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) for some special n , which shows the upper bound due to Zhang et al. (2019) is tight in some sense, and then establish a general lower bound for R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) in terms of n and k , which extends the classical result of Burr et al. (1989). Moreover, we show that R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) = R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , W n ) for sufficiently large n .

Abstract:In a recent breakthrough Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe obtained the first exponential improvement of the upper bound on the diagonal Ramsey numbers since 1935. We shorten their proof, replacing the underlying book algorithm with a simple inductive statement. This modification allows us - to give a very short proof of an improved upper bound on the off-diagonal Ramsey numbers, which extends to the multicolor setting, and - to clarify the dependence of the bounds on underlying parameters and optimize these parameters, obtaining, in particular, an upper bound $$R(k,k) \leq (3.8)^{k+o(k)}$$ on the diagonal Ramsey numbers.

Transitive subtournaments of $k$-th power Paley digraphs and improved lower bounds for Ramsey numbers

Abstract:Let $k \geq 2$ be an even integer. Let $q$ be a prime power such that $q \equiv k+1 \pmod {2k}$. We define the $\textit{k-th power Paley digraph}$ of order $q$, $G_k(q)$, as the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $a \to b$ is an edge if and only if $b-a$ is a $k$-th power residue. This generalizes the (k=2) Paley Tournament. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of transitive subtournaments of order four contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$, which holds for all $k$. We also provide a formula, in terms of Jacobi sums, for the number of transitive subtournaments of order three contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_3(G_k(q))$. In both cases, we give explicit determinations of these formulae for small $k$. We show that zero values of $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$ (resp. $\mathcal{K}_3(G_k(q))$) yield lower bounds for the multicolor directed Ramsey numbers $R_{\frac{k}{2}}(4)=R(4,4,\cdots,4)$ (resp. $R_{\frac{k}{2}}(3)$). We state explicitly these lower bounds for $k\leq 10$ and compare to known bounds, showing improvement for $R_2(4)$ and $R_3(3)$. Combining with known multiplicative relations we give improved lower bounds for $R_{t}(4)$, for all $t\geq 2$, and for $R_{t}(3)$, for all $t \geq 3$.

Abstract:Let $R(H_1,H_2)$ denote the Ramsey number for the graphs $H_1, H_2$, and let $J_k$ be $K_k{-}e$. We present algorithms which enumerate all circulant and block-circulant Ramsey graphs for different types of graphs, thereby obtaining several new lower bounds on Ramsey numbers including: $49 \leq R(K_3,J_{12})$, $36 \leq R(J_4,K_8)$, $43 \leq R(J_4,J_{10})$, $52 \leq R(K_4,J_8)$, $37 \leq R(J_5,J_6)$, $43 \leq R(J_5,K_6)$, $65\leq R(J_5,J_7)$. We also use a gluing strategy to derive a new upper bound on $R(J_5,J_6)$. With both strategies combined, we prove the value of two Ramsey numbers: $R(J_5,J_6)=37$ and $R(J_5,J_7)=65$. We also show that the 64-vertex extremal Ramsey graph for $R(J_5,J_7)$ is unique. Furthermore, our algorithms also allow to establish new lower bounds and exact values on Ramsey numbers involving wheel graphs and complete bipartite graphs, including: $R(W_7,W_4) = 21$, $R(W_7,W_7) = 19$, $R(K_{3,4},K_{3,4}) = 25$, and $R(K_{3,5}, K_{3,5})=33$.

Abstract:Building on recent work of Mattheus and Verstraëte, we establish a general connection between Ramsey numbers of the form $r(F,t)$ for $F$ a fixed graph and a variant of the Zarankiewicz problem asking for the maximum number of 1s in an $m$ by $n$ $0/1$-matrix that does not have any matrix from a fixed finite family $\mathcal{L}(F)$ derived from $F$ as a submatrix. As an application, we give new lower bounds for the Ramsey numbers $r(C_5,t)$ and $r(C_7,t)$, namely, $r(C_5,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{10}{7}})$ and $r(C_7,t) = \tilde\Omega(t^{\frac{5}{4}})$. We also show how the truth of a plausible conjecture about Zarankiewicz numbers would allow an approximate determination of $r(C_{2\ell+1}, t)$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 2$.

On the Ramsey number of daisies II

Abstract:A $(k+r)$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $(k+m)$ vertices is an $(r,m,k)$-daisy if there exists a partition of the vertices $V(H)=K\cup M$ with $|K|=k$, $|M|=m$ such that the set of edges of $H$ is all the $(k+r)$-tuples $K\cup P$, where $P$ is an $r$-tuple of $M$. Complementing results in ["On the Ramsey number of daisies I"], we obtain an $(r-2)$-iterated exponential lower bound to the Ramsey number of an $(r,m,k)$-daisy for $2$-colors. This matches the order of magnitude of the best lower bounds for the Ramsey number of a complete $r$-graph.

Abstract:A natural open problem in Ramsey theory is to determine those $3$-graphs $H$ for which the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ grows polynomially with $n$. We make substantial progress on this question by showing that if $H$ is tightly connected or has at most two tight components, then $r(H, K_n^{(3)})$ grows polynomially if and only if $H$ is not contained in an iterated blowup of an edge.

Abstract:For given simple graphs $H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c$, the multicolor Ramsey number $R(H_1,H_2,\dots,H_c)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $n$ such that for an arbitrary edge-decomposition $\{G_i\}^c_{i=1}$ of the complete graph $K_n$, at least one $G_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $H_i$. Let $m,n_1,n_2,\dots,n_c$ be positive integers and $\Sigma=\sum_{i=1}^{c}(n_i-1)$. Some bounds and exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ have been obtained in literature. Wang (Graphs Combin., 2020) conjectured that if $\Sigma\not\equiv 0\pmod{m-1}$ and $\Sigma+1\ge (m-3)^2$, then $R(K_{1,n_1},\ldots, K_{1,n_c}, P_m)=\Sigma+m-1.$ In this note, we give a new lower bound and some exact values of $R(K_{1,n_1},\dots,K_{1,n_c},P_m)$ when $m\leq\Sigma$, $\Sigma\equiv k\pmod{m-1}$, and $2\leq k \leq m-2$. These results partially confirm Wang's conjecture.

Lower Bounds for Book Ramsey Numbers

Abstract:We prove new bounds for Ramsey numbers for book graphs $B_n$. In particular, we show that $R(B_{n-1},B_n) = 4n-1$ for an infinite family of $n$ using a block-circulant construction similar to Paley graphs. We obtain improved bounds for several other values of $R(B_r,B_s)$ using different block-circulant graphs from SAT and integer programming (IP) solvers. Finally, we enumerate the number of critical graphs for $R(B_r,B_s)$ for small $r$ and $s$ using SAT modulo symmetries (SMS).

Off-diagonal Ramsey numbers for slowly growing hypergraphs

Abstract:For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ and a positive integer $n$, the Ramsey number $r(F,n)$ denotes the minimum $N$ such that every $N$-vertex $F$-free $k$-uniform hypergraph contains an independent set of $n$ vertices. A hypergraph is $\textit{slowly growing}$ if there is an ordering $e_1,e_2,\dots,e_t$ of its edges such that $|e_i \setminus \bigcup_{j = 1}^{i - 1}e_j| \leq 1$ for each $i \in \{2, \ldots, t\}$. We prove that if $k \geq 3$ is fixed and $F$ is any non $k$-partite slowly growing $k$-uniform hypergraph, then for $n\ge2$, \[ r(F,n) = \Omega\Bigl(\frac{n^k}{(\log n)^{2k - 2}}\Bigr).\] In particular, we deduce that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(F_5,n)$ is of order $n^{3}/\mbox{polylog}(n)$, where $F_5$ is the triple system $\{123, 124, 345\}$. This is the only 3-uniform Berge triangle for which the polynomial power of its off-diagonal Ramsey number was not previously known. Our constructions use pseudorandom graphs, martingales, and hypergraph containers.

Matching-star size Ramsey numbers under connectivity constraint

Abstract:Recently, Caro, Patkós, and Tuza (2022) introduced the concept of connected Turán number. We study a similar parameter in Ramsey theory. Given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the size Ramsey number $\hat{r}(G_1,G_2)$ refers to the smallest number of edges in a graph $G$ such that for any red-blue edge-coloring of $G$, either a red subgraph $G_1$ or a blue subgraph $G_2$ is present in $G$. If we further restrict the host graph $G$ to be connected, we obtain the connected size Ramsey number, denoted as $\hat{r}_c(G_1,G_2)$. Erdős and Faudree (1984) proved that $\hat r(nK_2,K_{1,m})=mn$ for all positive integers $m,n$. In this paper, we concentrate on the connected analog of this result. Rahadjeng, Baskoro, and Assiyatun (2016) provided the exact values of $\hat r_c(nK_2,K_{1,m})$ for $n=2,3$. We establish a more general result: for all positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $m\ge (n^2+2pn+n-3)/2$, we have $\hat r_c(nK_{1,p},K_{1,m})=n(m+p)-1$. As a corollary, $\hat r_c(nK_2,K_{1,m})=nm+n-1$ for $m\ge (n^2+3n-3)/2$. We also propose a conjecture for the interested reader.

Abstract:For given graphs G_1, G_2, … , G_k , k≥ 2 , the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R(G_1, G_2, … , G_k) , is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of G_i in color i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k . Furthermore, we prove that R(C_4, C_4, W_ℓ ^2-ℓ)≤ℓ ^2+ℓ +2 for ℓ≥ 9 , and if ℓ is a prime power, then the equality holds.
