Abstract:The hydrodynamic description of a superfluid is usually based on a two-fluid picture. In this thesis, basic properties of such a relativistic two-fluid system are derived from the underlying microscopic physics of a complex scalar quantum field theory. To obtain analytic results of all non-dissipative hydrodynamic quantities in terms of field theoretic variables, calculations are first carried out in a low-temperature and weak-coupling approximation. In a second step, the 2-particle-irreducible formalism is applied: This formalism allows for a numerical evaluation of the hydrodynamic parameters for all temperatures below the critical temperature. In addition, a system of two coupled superfluids is studied. As an application, the velocities of first and second sound in the presence of a superflow are calculated. The results show that first (second) sound evolves from a density (temperature) wave at low temperatures to a temperature (density) wave at high temperatures. This role reversal is investigated for ultra-relativistic and near-nonrelativistic systems for zero and nonzero superflow. The studies carried out in this thesis are of a very general nature as one does not have to specify the system for which the microscopic field theory is an effective description. As a particular example, superfluidity in dense quark and nuclear matter in compact stars are discussed.

Abstract:Superfluids support many different types of sound waves. We investigate the relation between the sound waves in a relativistic and a nonrelativistic superfluid by using hydrodynamics to calculate the various sound speeds. Then, using a particular holographic scalar gravity realization of a strongly interacting superfluid, we compute first, second, and fourth sound speeds as a function of the temperature. The relativistic low temperature results for second sound differ from Landau’s well known prediction for the nonrelativistic, incompressible case.

Abstract:We consider quantum mechanics written in hydrodynamic formulation for the case of relativistic spinor fields to study their velocity: within such a hydrodynamic formulation it is possible to see that the velocity as is usually defined can not actually represent the tangent vector to the trajectories of particles. We propose an alternative definition for this tangent vector and hence for the trajectories of particles, which we believe to be new and in fact the only one that is possible. Finally we discuss how these results are a necessary step to take in order to face further problems, like the definition of trajectories for the multi-particle systems.

Hydrodynamics and instabilities of relativistic superfluids at finite superflow

Abstract:We study the linear response of relativistic superfluids with a non-zero superfluid velocity. For sufficiently large superflow, an instability develops via the crossing of a pole of the retarded Green's functions to the upper half complex frequency plane. We show that this is caused by a local thermodynamic instability, i.e. when an eigenvalue of the static susceptibility matrix (the second derivatives of the free energy) diverges and changes sign. The onset of the instability occurs when $\partial_{\zeta}(n_s\zeta)=0$, with $\zeta$ the norm of the superfluid velocity and $n_s$ the superfluid density. The Landau instability for non-relativistic superfluids such as Helium 4 also coincides with the non-relativistic version of this criterion. We then turn to gauge/gravity duality and show that this thermodynamic instability criterion applies equally well to strongly-coupled superfluids. In passing, we compute holographically a number of transport coefficients parametrizing deviations out-of-equilibrium in the hydrodynamic regime and demonstrate that the gapless quasinormal modes of the dual planar black hole match those predicted by superfluid hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Relativistic fluid hydrodynamics, organized as an effective field theory in the velocity gradients, has zero radius of convergence due to the presence of non-hydrodynamic excitations. Likewise, the theory of elasticity of brittle solids, organized as an effective field theory in the strain gradients, has zero radius of convergence due to the process of the thermal nucleation of cracks. Viscoelastic materials share properties of both fluids and solids. We use holographic gauge theory/gravity correspondence to study all order hydrodynamics of relativistic viscoelastic media.

Propagation and attenuation of sound in one-dimensional quantum liquids

Abstract:At low temperatures, elementary excitations of a one-dimensional quantum liquid form a gas that can move as a whole with respect to the center of mass of the system. This internal motion attenuates at exponentially long time scales. As a result, in a broad range of frequencies the liquid is described by two-fluid hydrodynamics, and the system supports two sound modes. The physical nature of the two sounds depends on whether the particles forming the quantum liquid have a spin degree of freedom. For particles with spin, the modes are analogous to the first and second sound modes in superfluid $^4$He, which are the waves of density and entropy, respectively. When dissipative processes are taken into account, we find that at low frequencies the second sound is transformed into heat diffusion, while the first sound mode remains weakly damped and becomes the ordinary sound. In a spinless liquid the entropy and density oscillations are strongly coupled, and the resulting sound modes are hybrids of the first and second sound. As the frequency is lowered and dissipation processes become important, the crossover to single-fluid regime occurs in two steps. First the hybrid modes transform into predominantly density and entropy waves, similar to the first and second sound, and then the density wave transforms to the ordinary sound and the entropy wave becomes a heat diffusion mode. Finally, we account for the dissipation due to viscosity and intrinsic thermal conductivity of the gas of excitations, which controls attenuation of the sound modes at high frequencies.

Abstract:A dynamical model for Landau's original approach to superfluid Helium is presented, with two velocities but only one mass density. Second sound is an adiabatic perturbation that involves the temperature and the roton, aka the notoph. The action incorporates all the conservation laws, including the equation of continuity. With only 4 canonical variables it has a higher power of prediction than Landau's later, more complicated model, with its 8 degrees of freedom. The roton is identified with the massless notoph. This theory gives a very satisfactory account of second and fourth sounds. Second sound is an adiabatic oscillation of the temperature and both vector fields, with no net material motion. Fourth sound involves the roton, the temperature and the density. With the experimental confirmation of gravitational waves the relations between Hydrodynamics and Relativity and particle physics have become more clear, and urgent. The appearance of the Newtonian potential in irrotational hydrodynamics comes directly from Einstein's equations for the metric. The density factor $\rho$ is essential; it is time to acknowledge the role that it plays in particle theory. To complete the 2-vector theory we include the massless roton mode. Although this mode too is affected by the mass density, it turns out that the wave function of the unique notoph propagating mode $\mathcal{N}$ satisfies the normal massless wave equation $\Box\mathcal{N}$ = 0; the roton propagates as a free particle in the bulk of the superfluid without meeting resistance. In this circumstance we may have discovered the mechanism that lies behind the flow of He-II through very thin pores.

Hydrodynamics of nonlinear gauge-coupled quantum fluids

Abstract:By constructing a hydrodynamic canonical formalism, we show that the occurrence of an arbitrary density-dependent gauge potential in the meanfield Hamiltonian of a Bose-condensed fluid invariably leads to nonlinear flow-dependent terms in the wave equation for the phase, where such terms arise due to the explicit dependence of the mechanical flow on the fluid density. In addition, we derive a canonical momentum transport equation for this class of nonlinear fluid and obtain an expression for the stress tensor. Further, we study the hydrodynamic equations in a particular nonlinear fluid, where the effective gauge potential results from the introduction of weak contact interactions in an ultracold dilute Bose gas of optically-addressed two-level atoms. In the Cauchy equation of mechanical momentum transport of the superfluid, two non-trivial terms emerge due to the density-dependent vector potential. A body-force of dilation appears as a product of the gauge potential and the dilation rate of the fluid, while the stress tensor features a canonical flow pressure term given by the inner-product of the gauge potential and the canonical current density. By numerical simulation, we illustrate an interesting effect of the nonlinear gauge potential on the groundstate wavefunction of a superfluid in the presence of a foreign impurity. We find that the groundstate adopts a non-trivial local phase, which is antisymmetric under reversal of the gauge potential. The phase profile leads to a canonical-flow or phase-flow dipole about the impurity, resulting in a skirting mechanical flow. As a result, the pressure becomes asymmetric about the object and the condensate undergoes a deformation.

On the Quantization of the Motion of Liquids

Abstract:For building up a theory of superfluid Helium-4, Lev Landau ingeniously unified the principles of quantum mechanics with the principles of hydrodynamics. By introducing a velocity operator he was able to derive a quantum analogue of the mass density flux equation and a quantum Euler equation. The article shows that it is possible to formulate a consistent quantum theory of the ideal liquid based on Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics. This means that it is added the quantum analogue of the momentum density flux equation, the energy density flux equation, the entropy density flux equation, and a quantum vorticity equation. These are all manifestly in agreement with the classical limit of the flux equations of classical ideal liquids. It is also shown that the various aspects that have been criticised about Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics - e.g. the application of the inverse of the mass density operator - are not justified. Such a consistent quantum theory of an ideal liquid may therefore provide a starting point of a complementary approach in the theoretical research of superfluid Helium 4.

Abstract:We find an analytical solution to relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for a 1+1 dimensional Landau flow profile. We consider relativistic Navier-Stokes form of the dissipative hydrodynamic equation, for a non-conformal system with a constant speed of sound, and employ the obtained solution to fit rapidity spectrum of observed pions in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200, 17.3, 12.3, 8.76, 7.62, 6.27, 4.29, 3.83, 3.28 and 2.63 GeV collision energies. We find that at the freeze-out hypersurface with improved Landau's freeze-out prescription, the viscous corrections do not affect the rapidity spectra. We demonstrate that the solution of the non-conformal Landau flow lead to a better agreement with the experimental data compared to the conformal ideal solution. We also extract speed of sound from fit to the rapidity spectra for various collision energies and find a monotonous decrease with decreasing collision energies. Appealing to the fact that viscosity has negligible effect on rapidity spectra for Landau's freeze-out scenario, we argue that our calculations provides a framework for extracting the average value of speed of sound in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion Letter, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS* is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Abstract:We review experimental and theoretical progress in the physical description of the dynamics of the quantum fluids \he4 and \he3. Historically, the elementary excitations in these systems have been identified as phonons and rotons and, in \he3, collective zero sound and spin-fluctuations. Both recent high-precision measurements and theoretical methods have shown that the dynamics of these systems is actually very rich as will be discussed in detail in the body of this contribution.

Quantum Turbulence in a Three-Dimensional Holographic Superfluid

Abstract:We report real-time simulations of far-from-equilibrium dynamics of a holographic superfluid in three dimensions. The holographic duality maps a strongly coupled superfluid to a weakly coupled theory with gravity in a higher-dimensional curved space which we study numerically. Starting from configurations of dense tangles of quantized vortex lines, the superfluid exhibits turbulent behavior during its evolution towards thermal equilibrium. Specifically, we observe two subsequent universal regimes of quasi-stationary scaling in the occupation number spectrum, the first of which is Kolmogorov-like. Indications for the strongly dissipative nature of vortex dynamics in the three-dimensional holographic superfluid are found in the rapid shrinking and annihilation of small vortex rings that emerge from frequent reconnections of vortex lines during the evolution.

Abstract:Recent studies of turbulence in superfluid Helium indicate that turbulence in quantum fluids obeys a Kolmogorov scaling law. Such a law was previously attributed to classical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations of motion. It is suggested that turbulence in all fluids is due to quantum fluid mechanical effects. Employing a field theoretical view of the fluid flow velocity, vorticity appears as quantum filamentary strings. This in turn leads directly to the Kolmogorov critical indices for the case of fully developed turbulence.

Abstract:We investigate the linearized stability and causality properties of relativistic viscous superfluid hydrodynamics. The Landau-Lifshitz-Clark-Putterman formulation for the theory of relativistic viscous superfluids suffers from the same instability and acausality issues as the relativistic Navier-Stokes equation for normal fluids when written in the formulations of Eckart or Landau and Lifshitz. We show that conditions to ensure stability and causality can be satisfied with judicious redefinitions of the hydrodynamic variables. The conditions we obtain hold at non-zero superfluid velocity as well.

The molecular nature of superfluidity: Viscosity of helium from quantum stochastic molecular dynamics simulations over real trajectories

Abstract:Using quantum equations of motion for interacting bosons, stochastic molecular dynamics simulations with quantized momenta are performed for Lennard-Jones helium-4. The viscosity of the quantum liquid is significantly less than that of the classical liquid, being almost 5 times smaller at the lowest temperature studied. The classical and quantum liquids are identical except for Bose-Einstein condensation, which pinpoints the molecular mechanism for superfluidity. The results rely on the existence of stochastic but real particle trajectories, which has implications for the interpretation of quantum mechanics.
