Abstract:Utilizing a low-dose CT approach significantly reduces the radiation exposure for patients, yet it introduces challenges, such as increased noise and artifacts in the resultant images, which can hinder accurate medical diagnostics. Traditional methods for noise reduction struggle with preserving image textures due to the complexity of modeling statistical properties directly within the image domain. To address these limitations, this study introduces an enhanced noise-reduction technique centered around an advanced residual encoder-decoder network. By incorporating recursive processing into the foundational network, this method reduces computational complexity and enhances the effectiveness of noise reduction. Furthermore, the introduction of a root-mean-square error and perceptual loss functions aims to retain the integrity of the images' textural details. The enhanced technique also includes optimized tissue segmentation, improving artifact management post-improvement. Validation using the TCGA-COAD clinical dataset demonstrates superior performance in both noise reduction and image quality, as measured by post-denoising PSNR and SSIM, compared to the existing WGAN approach. This advancement in CT image processing offers a practical solution for clinical applications, achieving lower computational demands and faster processing times without compromising image quality.
Image and Video Processing
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems of noise and artifacts in low - dose CT (LDCT) images. Although low - dose CT scanning technology can significantly reduce the radiation exposure of patients, when this technology uses traditional methods such as filtered back - projection (FBP) to reconstruct images, it will lead to a decline in image quality and more noise and artifacts, which will hinder accurate medical diagnosis. Traditional noise reduction methods are difficult to maintain the texture details of the image while reducing noise, so a new method is needed to balance the needs of noise reduction and maintaining image quality. To meet these challenges, this paper proposes an enhanced noise reduction technique based on an improved residual encoder - decoder network. By introducing recursive processing in the network, this method not only reduces the computational complexity but also improves the noise reduction effect. In addition, by introducing the root - mean - square error (RMSE) and perceptual loss functions, it aims to preserve the texture details of the image. This technique also includes optimized tissue segmentation to improve artifact management after noise reduction. Experimental results show that compared with the existing WGAN methods, this method performs well in noise reduction and image quality, and at the same time has lower computational requirements and faster processing speed without sacrificing image quality. In short, the main goal of this research is to develop an effective low - dose CT image noise reduction method that can maintain the key features of the image while reducing noise and artifacts, thereby improving the accuracy of clinical diagnosis.
