Abstract:Generalised Sierpinski carpets are planar sets that generalise the well-known Sierpinski carpet and are defined by means of sequences of patterns. We study the structure of the sets at the kth iteration in the construction of the generalised carpet, for k greater than or equal to 1. Subsequently, we show that certain families of patterns provide total disconnectedness of the resulting generalised carpets. Moreover, analogous results hold even in a more general setting. Finally, we apply the obtained results in order to give an example of a totally disconnected generalised carpet with box-counting dimension 2.

Abstract:We continue with the ideas of Bonatti-Langevin-Jeandenans towards a constructive and algorithmic classification of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms (possibly with spines), up to topological conjugacy. We begin by indicating how to assign to every pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism an abstract geometric type through a Markov partition whose rectangles have been endowed with a vertical direction; these are known as geometric Markov partitions. Such assignment is not unique, as it depends on the specific geometric Markov partition, and not every abstract geometric type is realized by a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. This poses interesting problems related to the algorithmic computability of the classification. The article contains three main results: $i)$ the geometric type is a total invariant of conjugacy, $(ii)$ a pictorial and combinatorial criterion for determining when a given geometric type is realizable by a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism is provided, and $(iii)$ we describe an algorithmic procedure for determining when two geometric types correspond to topologically conjugate pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms.

Abstract:In this paper, the main focus is on the Sierpinski carpet Julia sets of the rational maps with non-recurrent critical points. We study the uniform quasicircle property of the peripheral circles, the relatively separated property of the peripheral circles and the locally porous property of these carpets. We also establish some quasisymmetric rigidities of these carpets, which generalizes the main results of Bonk-Lyubich-Merenkov to the postcritically infinite case. In the end we give a strategy to construct a class of postcritically infinite rational maps whose Julia sets are quasisymetrically equivalent to some round carpets.

Abstract:We give a categorification of the notion of a mathematical structure originally given by Bourbaki in their set theory textbook. We show that any isomorphism-invariant property of a finite structure can be computed by counting the number of isomorphic copies of small substructures it contains. Our main theorem in this direction is a generalization of the classical result of Hilbert about elementary symmetric polynomials generating the algebra of all symmetric polynomials. We also show that, for structures built from sets, the Yoneda functor extends to a canonical embedding of any such category of structures into an associated category of structures in the sense of classical model theory.

Abstract:A Polish space is not always homeomorphic to a computably presented Polish space. In this article, we examine degrees of non-computability of presenting homeomorphic copies of compact Polish spaces. We show that there exists a $0'$-computable low$_3$ compact Polish space which is not homeomorphic to a computable one, and that, for any natural number $n\geq 2$, there exists a Polish space $X_n$ such that exactly the high$_{n}$-degrees are required to present the homeomorphism type of $X_n$. We also show that no compact Polish space has a least presentation with respect to Turing reducibility. The first version of this article appeared in April 2020. A major update was made in September 2023, with improved proofs and results. This is the final version from January 2024, with more results on Čech homology groups.

Abstract:In this paper we address the question: How many pairwise non-isomorphic extremely amenable groups are there which are seprable metrizable or even Polish? We show that there are continuum many such groups. In fact we construct continuum many pairwise non-isomorphic extremely amenable groups as automorphism groups of countable structures. We also consider this classicfication problem from the point of view of descriptive set theory by showing that the class of all extremely amenable closed subgroups of $S_\infty$ is Borel and by obtaining some lower bounds for their isomorphism relation in the Borel reducibility hierarchy.

Abstract:We construct symmetric self-similar Dirichlet forms on unconstrained Sierpinski carpets, which are natural extension of planar Sierpinski carpets by allowing the small cells to live off the 1/ k grids. The intersection of two cells can be a line segment of irrational length, and the non-diagonal assumption is dropped in this recurrent setting.

Abstract:We obtain several results concerning the concept of isotypic structures. Namely we prove that any field of finite transcendence degree over a prime subfield is defined by types; then we construct isotypic but not isomorphic structures with countable underlying sets: totally ordered sets, fields, and groups. This answers an old question by B. Plotkin for groups.

Abstract:Every clone of functions comes naturally equipped with a topology---the topology of pointwise convergence. A clone $\mathfrak{C}$ is said to have automatic homeomorphicity with respect to a class $\mathcal{C}$ of clones, if every clone-isomorphism of $\mathfrak{C}$ to a member of $\mathcal{C}$ is already a homeomorphism (with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence). In this paper we study automatic homeomorphicity-properties for polymorphism clones of countable homogeneous relational structures. To this end we introduce and utilize universal homogeneous polymorphisms. Next to two generic criteria for the automatic homeomorphicity of the polymorphism clones of free homogeneous structures we show that the polymorphism clone of the generic poset with reflexive ordering has automatic homeomorphicity and that the polymorphism clone of the generic poset with strict ordering has automatic homeomorphicity with respect to countable $\omega$-categorical structures. Our results extend and generalize previous results by Bodirsky, Pinsker, and Pongrácz.

Abstract:We apply Boroński and Oprocha’s inverse limit construction of dynamical systems on the Sierpiński carpet by using the initial systems of n − Chamanara surfaces and their n − baker transformations, n ≥ 2 . We show that all positive real numbers are realized as metric entropy values of dynamical systems on the carpet. We also produce a simplification of Boroński and Oprocha’s proof showing that dynamical systems on the carpet do not have the Bowen specification property.

Abstract:We investigate a homeomorphism problem on a class of self-similar sets called generalized Sierpinski carpets (or shortly GSCs). It follows from two well-known results by Hata and Whyburn that a connected GSC is homeomorphic to the standard Sierpinski carpet if and only if it has no local cut points. On the one hand, we show that to determine whether a given GSC is connected, it suffices to iterate the initial pattern twice. On the other hand, we obtain two criteria: (1) for a connected GSC to have cut points, (2) for a connected GSC with no cut points to have local cut points. With these two criteria, we characterize all GSCs that are homeomorphic to the standard Sierpinski carpet. Our results on cut points and local cut points hold for Baranski carpets, too. Moreover, we extend the connectedness result to Baranski sponges. Thus, we also characterize when a Baranski carpet is homeomorphic to the standard GSC.

Abstract:This thesis provides a classification of generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms up to topological conjugacy using an algorithmic approach. A Markov partition of a generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism is a decomposition of the surface into a finite number of rectangles with disjoint interiors, such that their images intersect with any other rectangle in the Markov partition along a finite number of horizontal sub-rectangles. Every generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism has a Markov partition, and, by using the surface's orientation, we can endow any Markov partition with a geometrization. The geometric type of a geometric Markov partition was defined by Bonatti and Langevin in their book, "Diffeomorphismes de Smale des surfaces", to classify saddle-type basic pieces for structurally stable diffeomorphisms on surfaces. A geometric type is an abstract combinatorial object that generalizes the incidence matrix of a Markov partition. It takes into account not only the number of times the image of a rectangle intersects with any other rectangle in the family but also the order and change of orientation induced by the homeomorphisms. This thesis employs the geometric type of a geometric Markov partition to classify conjugacy classes of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. The classification is provided by the three main results in this manuscript: I) The geometric type is a complete invariant of conjugation. II) A criterion is provided for determining whether an abstract geometric type is realized by a geometric Markov partition of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. III) An algorithm is described for determining whether two geometric types in the pseudo-Anosov class are realized by generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms that are topologically conjugated or not.

Abstract:We study the existence of uncountable first-order structures that are homogeneous with respect to their finitely generated substructures. In many classical cases this is either well-known or follows from general facts, for example, if the language is finite and relational then ultrapowers provide arbitrarily large such sturctures. On the other hand, there are no general results saying that uncountable homogeneous structures with a given age exist. We examine the monoid of self-embeddings of a fixed countable homogeneous structure and, using abstract Fraïssé theory, we present a method of constructing an uncountable homogeneous structure, based on the amalgamation property of this monoid.

Abstract:Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Abstract:We show that the homotopy category of unpointed spaces admits no set of objects jointly reflecting isomorphisms by giving an explicit counterexample involving large symmetric groups. We also show that, in contrast, the spheres jointly reflect equivalences in the homotopy 2-category of spaces. The non-existence of such a set in the homotopy category was originally claimed by Heller, but his argument relied on the statement that for every set of spaces, long enough transfinite sequential diagrams admit weak colimits which are privileged with respect to the given set. Using the theory of graphs of groups, we show that this statement is false, by proving that for every ordinal with uncountable cofinality, there is a diagram indexed by that ordinal which admits no weak colimit that is privileged with respect to the spheres.

Quasisymmetric geometry of low-dimensional random spaces

Abstract:We initiate a study of the quasisymmetric uniformization of naturally arising random fractals and show that many of them fall outside the realm of quasisymmetric uniformization to simple canonical spaces. We begin with the trace, the graph of Brownian motion, and various variants of the Schramm-Loewner evolution $\mathrm{SLE}_\kappa$ for $\kappa>0$, and show that a.s. neither is a quasiarc. After that, we study the conformal loop ensemble $\mathrm{CLE}_\kappa$, $\kappa \in (\frac{8}{3}, 4]$, and show that the collection of all points outside the loops is a.s. homeomorphic to the standard Sierpiński carpet, but not quasisymmetrically equivalent to a round carpet.
