Abstract:In this note, we consider the asymmetric nearest neighbor ferromagnetic Ising model on the $(d+s)$-dimensional unit cubic lattice $\Z^{d+s}$, at inverse temperature $\beta=1$ and with coupling constants $J_s>0$ and $J_d>0$ for edges of $\Z^s$ and $\Z^d$, respectively. We obtain a lower bound for the critical curve in the phase diagram of $(J_s,J_d)$. In particular, as $J_d$ approaches its critical value from below, our result is directly related to the so-called dimensional crossover phenomenon.

Abstract:A method combining statistical equilibrium theory and metric geometry is used to study thermodynamic scalar curvature in the neighborhood of the Curie critical temperature for an Ising model of ferromagnetism. Using a Bethe type free energy expression, a non-diagonal metric is introduced on the two-dimensional phase space of long-range and short-range order parameters. Based on the metric elements Christoffel symbols, curvature tensor and Ricci tensor are found. An expression (containing equilibrium order parameters) is derived for Riemann scalar curvature (R). Its behavior near the critical temperature is examined analytically. We find that R tends toward plus infinity while approaching the critical point. This result fits well with those in the exact one-dimensional chain and mean-field Ising model in the lowest order approximation.
2d Ising Critical Couplings from Quantum Gravity

Abstract:Using an exact holographic duality formula between the inhomogeneous 2d Ising model and 3d quantum gravity, we provide a formula for "real" zeroes of the 2d Ising partition function on finite trivalent graphs in terms of the geometry of a 2d triangulation embedded in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. The complex phase of those zeroes is given by the dihedral angles of the triangulation, which reflect its extrinsic curvature within the ambient 3d space, while the modulus is given by the angles within the 2d triangles, thus encoding the intrinsic geometry of the triangulation. Our formula can not cover the whole set of Ising zeroes, but we conjecture that a suitable complexification of these "real" zeroes would provide a more thorough formula. Nevertheless, in the thermodynamic limit, in the case of flat planar 2d triangulations, our Ising zeros' formula gives the critical couplings for isoradial graphs, confirming its generality. Finally, the formula naturally extends to graphs with arbitrary valence in terms of geometry of circle patterns embedded in 3d space. This approach shows an intricate, but precise, new relation between statistical mechanics and quantum geometry.

Sensitivity of the thermodynamics of two-dimensional systems towards the topological classes of their surfaces

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the two-dimensional Ising model on triangular, square, and hexagonal lattices with various topologies. We focus on the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility and of the specific heat near the critical point of the planar bulk system. We find that scaling functions of these quantities on the spherical surface (Euler characteristic K = 2) differ from the scaling functions on the projective plane (K = 1) which, in turn, differ from the scaling functions on the torus and on the Klein bottle (both K = 0). This provides strong evidence that phase transitions of the Ising model on two-dimensional surfaces depend on their topologies.

Finite size behaviors of critical Ising model on a rectangle with free boundaries

Abstract:Using the bond-propagation algorithm, we study the Ising model on a rectangle of size $M \times N$ with free boundaries. For five aspect ratios $\rho=M/N=1,2,4,8,16$, the critical free energy, internal energy and specific heat are calculated. The largest size reached is $M \times N=64\times 10^6$. The accuracy of the free energy reaches $10^{-26}$. Basing on these accurate data, we determine exact expansions of the critical free energy, internal energy and specific heat. With these expansions, we extract the bulk, surface and corner parts of free energy, internal energy and specific heat. The fitted bulk free energy density is given by $f_{\infty}=0.92969539834161021499(1)$, comparing with Onsager's exact result $f_{\infty}=0.92969539834161021506...$. We prove the conformal field theory(CFT) prediction of the corner free energy, in which the central charge of the Ising model is found to be $c=0.5\pm 1\times 10^{-10}$ comparing with the CFT result $c=0.5$. We find that not only the corner free energy but also the corner internal energy and specific heat are geometry independent, i.e., independent of aspect ratio. The implication of this finding on the finite scaling is discussed. In the second order correction of the free energy, we prove the geometry dependence predicted by CFT and find out a geometry independent constant beyond CFT. High order corrections are also obtained.

The torus plateau for the high-dimensional Ising model

Abstract:We consider the Ising model on a $d$-dimensional discrete torus of volume $r^d$, in dimensions $d>4$ and for large $r$, in the vicinity of the infinite-volume critical point $\beta_c$. We prove that for $\beta=\beta_c- {\rm const}\, r^{-d/2}$ (with a suitable constant) the susceptibility is bounded above and below by multiples of $r^{d/2}$, and that the two-point function has a ``plateau'' in the sense that it decays like $|x|^{-(d-2)}$ when $|x|$ is small relative to the volume but for larger $|x|$ it levels off to a constant value of order $r^{-d/2}$. We also prove that at $\beta=\beta_c- {\rm const}\, r^{-d/2}$ the renormalised coupling constant is nonzero, which implies a non-Gaussian limit for the average spin. The proof relies on near-critical estimates for the infinite-volume two-point function obtained recently by Duminil-Copin and Panis, and builds upon a strategy proposed by Papathanakos. The random current representation of the Ising model plays a central role in our analysis.

We prove uniqueness of the Gibbs measure in the high temperature region and coexistence of at least two Gibbs measures at low temperature. Abstract:In this paper the three dimensional random field Ising model is studied at both zero temperature and positive temperature. Critical exponents are extracted at zero temperature by finite size scaling analysis of large discontinuities in the bond energy. The heat capacity exponent $\alpha$ is found to be near zero. The ground states are determined for a range of external field and disorder strength near the zero temperature critical point and the scaling of ground state tilings of the field-disorder plane is discussed. At positive temperature the specific heat and the susceptibility are obtained using the Wang-Landau algorithm. It is found that sharp peaks are present in these physical quantities for some realizations of systems sized $16^3$ and larger. These sharp peaks result from flipping large domains and correspond to large discontinuities in ground state bond energies. Finally, zero temperature and positive temperature spin configurations near the critical line are found to be highly correlated suggesting a strong version of the zero temperature fixed point hypothesis.

Abstract:We point out that the construction of a martingale observable describing the spin interface of the two-dimensional Ising model extends to a class of non-integrable variants of the two-dimensional Ising model, and express it in terms of Grassmann integrals. Under a conjecture about the scaling limit of this object, which is similar to some results recently obtained using constructive renormalization group methods, this would imply that the distribution of the interface at criticality has the same scaling limit as in the integrable model: Schramm-Loewner evolution SLE(3).

Geometric Formula for 2d Ising Zeros: Examples & Numerics

Abstract:A geometric formula for the zeros of the partition function of the inhomogeneous 2d Ising model was recently proposed in terms of the angles of 2d triangulations embedded in the flat 3d space. Here we proceed to an analytical check of this formula on the cubic graph, dual to a double pyramid, and provide a thorough numerical check by generating random 2d planar triangulations. Our method is to generate Delaunay triangulations of the 2-sphere then performing random local rescalings. For every 2d triangulations, we compute the corresponding Ising couplings from the triangle angles and the dihedral angles, and check directly that the Ising partition function vanishes for these couplings (and grows in modulus in their neighborhood). In particular, we lift an ambiguity of the original formula on the sign of the dihedral angles and establish a convention in terms of convexity/concavity. Finally, we extend our numerical analysis to 2d toroidal triangulations and show that the geometric formula does not work and will need to be generalized, as originally expected, in order to accommodate for non-trivial topologies.

Abstract:We study the low-energy physics of the critical (2+1)-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model. The one-dimensional version of the model is a paradigmatic example of a system governed by an infinite-randomness fixed point, for which many results on the distributions of observables are known via an asymptotically exact renormalization group (RG) approach. In two dimensions, the same RG rules have been implemented numerically, and demonstrate a flow to infinite randomness. However, analytical understanding of the structure of this RG has remained elusive due to the development of geometrical structure in the graph of interacting spins. To understand the character of the fixed point, we consider the RG flow acting on a joint ensemble of graphs and couplings. We propose that the RG effectively occurs in two stages: (1) randomization of the interaction graph until it belongs to a certain ensemble of random triangulations of the plane, and (2) a flow of the distributions of couplings to infinite randomness while the graph ensemble remains invariant. This picture is substantiated by a numerical RG in which one obtains a steady-state graph degree distribution and subsequently infinite-randomness scaling distributions of the couplings. Both of these aspects of the RG flow can be approximately reproduced in simplified analytical models.

Abstract:We study ferromagnetic Ising models on finite graphs with an inhomogeneous external field, where a subset of vertices is designated as the boundary. We show that the influence of boundary conditions on any given spin is maximised when the external field is identically 0. One corollary is that spin-spin correlations are maximised when the external field vanishes and the boundary condition is free, which proves a conjecture of Shlosman. In particular, the random field Ising model on Z(d), d >= 3, exhibits exponential decay of correlations in the entire high temperature regime of the pure Ising model. Another corollary is that the pure Ising model in d >= 3 satisfies the conjectured strong spatial mixing property in the entire high temperature regime.
Simplicial Lattice Study of the 2d Ising CFT

Abstract:I derive a formulation of the 2-dimensional critical Ising model on non-uniform simplicial lattices. Surprisingly, the derivation leads to a set of geometric constraints that a lattice must satisfy in order for the model to have a well-defined continuum limit. I perform Monte Carlo simulations of the critical Ising model on discretizations of several non-trivial manifolds including a twisted torus and a 2-sphere and I show that the simulations are in agreement with the 2d Ising CFT in the continuum limit. I discuss the inherent benefits of using non-uniform simplicial lattices to study quantum field theory and how the methods developed here can potentially be generalized for use with other theories.

Abstract:Let $\DD$ be a simply connected, smooth enough domain of $\bbR^2$. For $L>0$ consider the continuous time, zero-temperature heat bath dynamics for the nearest-neighbor Ising model on $\mathbb Z^2$ with initial condition such that $\sigma_x=-1$ if $x\in L\DD$ and $\sigma_x=+1$ otherwise. It is conjectured \cite{cf:Spohn} that, in the diffusive limit where space is rescaled by $L$, time by $L^2$ and $L\to\infty$, the boundary of the droplet of "$-$" spins follows a \emph{deterministic} anisotropic curve-shortening flow, where the normal velocity at a point of its boundary is given by the local curvature times an explicit function of the local slope. The behavior should be similar at finite temperature $T<T_c$, with a different temperature-dependent anisotropy function. We prove this conjecture (at zero temperature) when $\DD$ is convex. Existence and regularity of the solution of the deterministic curve-shortening flow is not obvious \textit{a priori} and is part of our result. To our knowledge, this is the first proof of mean curvature-type droplet shrinking for a model with genuine microscopic dynamics.

Critical scaling of the mutual information in two-dimensional disordered Ising models

Abstract:Renyi Mutual information (RMI), computed from second Renyi entropies, can identify classical phase transitions from their finite-size scaling at the critical points. We apply this technique to examine the presence or absence of finite temperature phase transitions in various two-dimensional models on a square lattice, which are extensions of the conventional Ising model by adding a quenched disorder. When the quenched disorder causes the nearest neighbor bonds to be both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, (a) a spin glass phase exists only at zero temperature, and (b) a ferromagnetic phase exists at a finite temperature when the antiferromagnetic bond distributions are sufficiently dilute. Furthermore, finite temperature paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transitions can also occur when the disordered bonds involve only ferromagnetic couplings of random strengths. In our numerical simulations, the "zero temperature only" phase transitions are identified when there is no consistent finite-size scaling of the RMI curves, while for finite temperature critical points, the curves can identify the critical temperature $T_c$ by their crossings at $T_c$ and $2\, T_c $.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1806.06668" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.06668">arXiv:1806.06668</a>], we have studied the Boltzmann random triangulation of the disk coupled to an Ising model on its faces with Dobrushin boundary condition at its critical temperature. In this paper, we investigate the phase transition of this model by extending our previous results to arbitrary temperature: We compute the partition function of the model at all temperatures, and derive several critical exponents associated with the infinite perimeter limit. We show that the model has a local limit at any temperature, whose properties depend drastically on the temperature. At high temperatures, the local limit is reminiscent of the uniform infinite half-planar triangulation (UIHPT) decorated with a subcritical percolation. At low temperatures, the local limit develops a bottleneck of finite width due to the energy cost of the main Ising interface between the two spin clusters imposed by the Dobrushin boundary condition. This change can be summarized by a novel order parameter with a nice geometric meaning. In addition to the phase transition, we also generalize our construction of the local limit from the two-step asymptotic regime used in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1806.06668" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.06668">arXiv:1806.06668</a>] to a more natural diagonal asymptotic regime. We obtain in this regime a scaling limit related to the length of the main Ising interface, which coincides with predictions from the continuum theory of quantum surfaces (a.k.a.\ Liouville quantum gravity).

Random-bond Ising model and its dual in hyperbolic spaces

Abstract:We analyze the thermodynamic properties of the random-bond Ising model (RBIM) on closed hyperbolic surfaces using Monte Carlo and high-temperature series expansion techniques. We also analyze the dual-RBIM, that is, the model that in the absence of disorder is related to the RBIM via the Kramers-Wannier duality. Even on self-dual lattices this model is different from the RBIM, unlike in the Euclidean case. We explain this anomaly by a careful rederivation of the Kramers-Wannier duality. For the (dual-)RBIM, we compute the paramagnet-to-ferromagnet phase transition as a function of both temperature T and the fraction of antiferromagnetic bonds p. We find that as temperature is decreased in the RBIM, the paramagnet gives way to either a ferromagnet or a spin-glass phase via a second-order transition compatible with mean-field behavior. In contrast, the dual-RBIM undergoes a strongly first-order transition from the paramagnet to the ferromagnet both in the absence of disorder and along the Nishimori line. We study both transitions for a variety of hyperbolic tessellations and comment on the role of coordination number and curvature. The extent of the ferromagnetic phase in the dual-RBIM corresponds to the correctable phase of hyperbolic surface codes under independent bit- and phase-flip noise.
Two-dimensional critical systems with mixed boundary conditions: Exact Ising results from conformal invariance and boundary-operator expansions

Abstract:With conformal-invariance methods, Burkhardt, Guim, and Xue studied the critical Ising model, defined on the upper half plane y>0 with different boundary conditions a and b on the negative and positive x axes. For ab=-+ and f+, they determined the one- and two-point averages of the spin σ and energy ε. Here +,-, and f stand for spin-up, spin-down, and free-spin boundaries, respectively. The case +-+-+⋯, where the boundary condition switches between + and - at arbitrary points, ζ_{1},ζ_{2},⋯ on the x axis was also analyzed. In the first half of this paper a similar study is carried out for the alternating boundary condition +f+f+⋯ and the case -f+ of three different boundary conditions. Exact results for the one- and two-point averages of σ,ε, and the stress tensor T are derived with conformal-invariance methods. From the results for 〈T〉, the critical Casimir interaction with the boundary of a wedge-shaped inclusion is derived for mixed boundary conditions. In the second half of the paper, arbitrary two-dimensional critical systems with mixed boundary conditions are analyzed with boundary-operator expansions. Two distinct types of expansions-away from switching points of the boundary condition and at switching points-are considered. Using the expansions, we express the asymptotic behavior of two-point averages near boundaries in terms of one-point averages. We also consider the strip geometry with mixed boundary conditions and derive the distant-wall corrections to one-point averages near one edge due to the other edge. Finally we confirm the consistency of the predictions obtained with conformal-invariance methods and with boundary-operator expansions, in the the first and second halves of the paper.
Finite-temperature properties of the easy-axis Heisenberg model on frustrated lattices

Abstract:Motivated by recent experiments on a compound {displaying Ising-like short-range correlations on the triangular lattice, we study the anisotropic easy-axis spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular and kagome lattice} by performing numerical calculations of finite-temperature properties, in particular of static spin structure factor and of thermodynamic quantities, on systems with up to 36 sites. On the triangular lattice, the low-temperature spin structure factor {exhibits long-range} spin correlations in the whole range of anisotropies, whereas thermodynamic quantities reveal a crossover upon increasing the anisotropy, most pronounced in the vanishing generalized Wilson ratio in the easy-axis regime. In contrast, on the kagome lattice, the spin structure factor is short-range, and thermodynamic quantities evolve steadily between the easy-axis and the isotropic case, consistent with the interpretation in terms of {a} spin liquid.

Abstract:We prove a general result on convergence of interfaces in the critical planar Ising model to conformally invariant curves absolutely continuous with respect to SLE(3). Our setup includes multiple interfaces on arbitrary finitely connected domains, and we also treat the radial SLE case. In the case of simply and doubly connected domains, the limiting processes are described explicitly in terms of rational and elliptic functions, respectively.
