Abstract:Black holes evolve by evaporation of their event horizon. While this process is believed to be unitary, there is no consensus on the recovery of information in black hole entropy. A missing link is a unit of information in black hole evaporation. Distinct from Hawking radiation, we identify evaporation in entangled pairs by topology of the event horizon consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in a uniformly spaced horizon area. It derives by continuation of in Rindler spacetime prior to gravitational collapse, subject to a tight correlation of the fundamental frequency of Quasi-Normal-Mode (QNM) ringing in gravitational and electromagnetic radiation. Information extraction from entangled pairs by detecting one over the surface spanned by three faces of a large cube carries a quantum of information of upon including measurement of spin.

Stimulated Emission of Radiation and the Black Hole Information Problem

Abstract:The quantum theory of black holes has opened up a window to study the intersection of general relativity and quantum field theory, but perceived paradoxes concerning the fate of classical information directed at a black hole horizon, as well as concerning the unitarity of the evaporation process, have led researchers to question the very foundations of physics. In this pedagogical review I clarify the ramifications of the fact that black holes not only emit radiation spontaneously, but also respond to infalling matter and radiation by emitting approximate clones of those fields in a stimulated manner. I review early purely statistical arguments based on Einstein's treatment of black bodies, and then show that the Holevo capacity of the black hole (the capacity to transmit classical information through a quantum channel) is always positive. I then show how stimulated emission turns the black hole into an almost optimal quantum cloning machine, and furthermore discuss the capacity of black holes to transmit quantum information. Taking advantage of an analogy between black hole physics and non-linear optics I show that a calculation of the evolution of a black hole over time, using a discretization of the black hole $S$-matrix path integral, yields well-behaved Page curves suggesting that black hole evaporation is unitary. Finally, I speculate about possible observable consequences of stimulated emission of radiation in black holes.

Abstract:Since the discovery of Hawking radiation, its consistency with quantum theory has been widely questioned. In the widely described picture, irrespective of what initial state a black hole starts with before collapsing, it eventually evolves into a thermal state of Hawking radiations after the black hole is exhausted. This scenario violates the principle of unitarity as required for quantum mechanics and leads to the acclaimed ‘‘information loss paradox’’. This paradox has become an obstacle or a reversed touchstone for any possible theory to unify the gravity and quantum mechanics. Based on the results from Hawking radiation as tunneling, we recently show that Hawking radiations can carry off all information about the collapsed matter in a black hole. After discovering the existence of information-carrying correlation, we show in great detail that entropy is conserved for Hawking radiation based on standard probability theory and statistics. We claim that information previously considered lost remains hidden inside Hawking radiation. More specifically, it is encoded into correlations between Hawking radiations. Our study thus establishes harmony between Hawking radiation and the unitarity of quantum mechanics, which establishes the basis for a significant milestone toward resolving the long-standing information loss paradox. The paper provides a brief review of the exciting development on Hawking radiation. In addition to summarize our own work on this subject, we compare and address other related studies.
Discreteness Unravels the Black Hole Information Puzzle: Insights from a Quantum Gravity Toy Model

Abstract:The black hole information puzzle can be resolved if two conditions are met. Firstly, if the information of what falls inside a black hole remains encoded in degrees of freedom that persist after the black hole completely evaporates. These degrees of freedom should be capable of purifying the information. Secondly, if these purifying degrees of freedom do not significantly contribute to the system's energy, as the macroscopic mass of the initial black hole has been radiated away as Hawking radiation to infinity. The presence of microscopic degrees of freedom at the Planck scale provides a natural mechanism for achieving these two conditions without running into the problem of the large pair-creation probabilities of standard remnant scenarios. In the context of Hawking radiation, the first condition implies that correlations between the {\em in} and {\em out} Hawking partner particles need to be transferred to correlations between the {\em microscopic degrees of freedom} and the {\em out} partners in the radiation. This transfer occurs dynamically when the {\em in} partners reach the singularity inside the black hole, entering the UV regime of quantum gravity where the interaction with the microscopic degrees of freedom becomes strong. The second condition suggests that the conventional notion of the vacuum's uniqueness in quantum field theory should fail when considering the full quantum gravity degrees of freedom. In this paper, we demonstrate both key aspects of this mechanism using a solvable toy model of a quantum black hole inspired by loop quantum gravity.

Abstract:The evaporation of black holes into apparently thermal radiation poses a serious conundrum for theoretical physics: at face value, it appears that in the presence of a black hole, quantum evolution is non-unitary and destroys information. This information loss paradox has its seed in the presence of a horizon causally separating the interior and asymptotic regions in a black hole spacetime. A quantitative resolution of the paradox could take several forms: (a) a precise argument that the underlying quantum theory is unitary, and that information loss must be an artifact of approximations in the derivation of black hole evaporation, (b) an explicit construction showing how information can be recovered by the asymptotic observer, (c) a demonstration that the causal disconnection of the black hole interior from infinity is an artifact of the semiclassical approximation. This review summarizes progress on all these fronts.

Abstract:In 1974 Steven Hawking showed that black holes emit thermal radiation, which eventually causes them to evaporate. The problem of the fate of information in this process is known as the "black hole information paradox". Two main types of resolution postulate either a fundamental loss of information in Nature -- hence the breakdown of quantum mechanics -- or some sort of new physics, e.g. quantum gravity, which guarantee the global preservation of unitarity. Here we explore the second possibility with the help of recent developments in continuous-variable quantum information. Concretely, we employ the solution to the Gaussian quantum marginal problem to show that the thermality of all individual Hawking modes is consistent with a global pure state of the radiation. Surprisingly, we find out that the mods of radiation of an astrophysical black hole are thermal until the very last burst. In contrast, the single-mode thermality of Hawking radiation originating from microscopic black holes, expected to evaporate through several quanta, is not excluded, though there are constraints on modes' frequencies. Our result paves the way towards a systematic study of multi-mode correlations in Hawking radiation.

Abstract:Hawking's discovery that black holes can evaporate through radiation emission has posed a number of questions that with time became fundamental hallmarks for a quantum theory of gravity. The most famous one is likely the information paradox, which finds an elegant explanation in the Page argument suggesting that a black hole and its radiation can be effectively represented by a random state of qubits. Leveraging the same assumption, we ponder the extent to which a black hole may display emergent symmetries, employing the entanglement asymmetry as a modern, information-based indicator of symmetry breaking. We find that for a random state devoid of any symmetry, a $U(1)$ symmetry emerges and it is exact in the thermodynamic limit before the Page time. At the Page time, the entanglement asymmetry shows a finite jump to a large value. Our findings imply that the emitted radiation is symmetric up to the Page time and then undergoes a sharp transition. Conversely the black hole is symmetric only after the Page time.

Abstract:It was found in [Phys.Lett.B 675 (2009) 98] that information is conserved in the process of black hole evaporation, by using the tunneling formulism and considering the correlations between emitted particles. In this Letter, we shall include quantum gravity effects, by taking into account of the log-area correction to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The correlation between successively emitted particles is calculated, with Planck-scale corrections. By considering the black hole evaporation process, entropy conservation is checked, and the existence of black hole remnant is emphasized. We conclue in this case information can leak out through the radiation and black hole evaporation is still a unitary process.

Abstract:We resolve black hole information paradox within semiclassical gravity, in a manner that does not depend on details of unknown quantum gravity. Our crucial insight is that outgoing Hawking particles are physical only far from the black hole horizon, so they are created far from the horizon and entangled with degrees of freedom closer to the horizon. The latter degrees of freedom can be understood as quasi-classical coherent states, implying that Hawking radiation is accompanied with additional radiation similar to classical radiation by which the black hole loses hair during the classical gravitational collapse. The two kinds of radiation are entangled, which resolves black hole information paradox.

On the irrelevance of the scrambling power of gravity for black hole radiation

Abstract:Black holes are a recently observed theoretical prediction of General Relativity, characterized by event horizons, from which information cannot escape. Examined through the lenses of quantum mechanics, they can radiate at a definite temperature inverse to their mass and horizon radius. Hawking radiation, whose spectrum was calculated considering particles scattering off black holes, is connected to the paradox of the loss of information falling into them. Information can become non-fungible, due to scrambling. We demonstrate this feature not to be restricted to curved space-times: soft radiation scattering in a flat space-time does scramble information as well. To this end, we compute the scrambling of information through the tripartite mutual information in a scattering process off a black hole and compare it with the flat space-time analog. We show that the scrambling power of the gravitational field of a black hole is negligible with respect to the scrambling power of flat space-time.

Abstract:The central question in this article is how information does leak out from black holes. Relying on algebraic arguments and the concept of superselection sectors, we propose the existence of certain operators whose correlations extend across the black hole atmosphere and range into the interior. Contained in the full algebra, these black hole intertwiners will not belong to the subalgebra describing semiclassical bulk physics. We study this proposal in the context of operator reconstructions for code spaces containing a large number of microstates. As long as the atmosphere is excluded from a particular subsystem, the global state seen under the action of the associated algebra is maximally mixed and therefore described by a single classical background. Once the relevant correlations are encoded, i.e. if the algebra is sufficiently enlarged, perfect state distinguishability becomes possible. We arrive at this by computing the von Neumann entropy which may explain the result obtained by applying the quantum extremal surface prescription to the mixed state. We then examine these insights in the context of black hole evaporation and argue that information is transferred to the radiation via black hole intertwiners. We derive the Page curve. The mechanism above suggests that black hole information is topologically protected. An infalling observer would experience no drama. This may resolve the unitarity problem without running into any firewall or state puzzle, the latter being evident in generalized entropy computations. We also examine the question of how certain wormhole topologies may be understood given these findings. We argue that their occurrence in gravity replica computations may be related to the maximal correlation between radiation and atmosphere surrounding the old black hole. This may suggest a connection between topology change and near horizon quantum gravitational effects.

Abstract:An effective field theory for infalling observers in the vicinity of a quasi-static black hole is given in terms of a freely falling lattice discretization. The lattice model successfully reproduces the thermal spectrum of outgoing Hawking radiation, as was shown by Corley and Jacobson, but can also be used to model observations made by a typical low-energy observer who enters the black hole in free fall at a prescribed time. The explicit short distance cutoff ensures that, from the viewpoint of the infalling observer, any quantum information that entered the black hole more than a scrambling time earlier has been erased by the black hole singularity. This property, combined with the requirement that outside observers need at least of order the scrambling time to extract quantum information from the black hole, ensures that a typical infalling observer does not encounter drama upon crossing the black hole horizon in a theory where black hole information is preserved for asymptotic observers.

Abstract:The recent progress in string theory strongly suggests that formation and evaporation of black holes is a unitary process. This fact makes it imperative that we find a flaw in the semiclassical reasoning that implies a loss of information. We propose a new criterion that limits the domain of classical gravity: the hypersurfaces of a foliation cannot be stretched too much. This conjectured criterion may have important consequences for the early Universe.

Abstract:Black holes, initially thought of as very interesting mathematical and geometric solutions of general relativity, over time, have come up with surprises and challenges for modern physics. In modern times, they have started to test our confidence in the fundamental understanding of nature. The most serious charge on the black holes is that they eat up information, never to release and subsequently erase it. This goes absolutely against the sacred principles of all other branches of fundamental sciences. This realization has shaken the very base of foundational concepts, both in quantum theory and gravity, which we always took for granted. Attempts to get rid of of this charge, have led us to crossroads with concepts, hold dearly in quantum theory. The sphere of black hole’s tussle with quantum theory has readily and steadily grown, from the advent of the Hawking radiation some four decades back, into domain of quantum information theory in modern times, most aptly, recently put in the form of the firewall puzzle. Do black holes really indicate something sinister about their existence or do they really point towards the troubles of ignoring the fundamental issues, our modern theories are seemingly plagued with? In this review, we focus on issues pertaining to black hole evaporation, the development of the information loss paradox, its recent formulation, the leading debates and promising directions in the community.

Abstract:The quantum extension of the Kruskal spacetime indicates the existence of a companion black hole in the universe earlier than ours. It is shown that the radiations from the companion black hole can enter its horizon, pass through the deep Planck region, and show up from the white hole in our universe. These radiations inlay extra bright rings in the image of the black hole in our universe, and some of these rings appear distinctly in the shadow region. Therefore, the image of the black hole observed by us encodes the information of quantum gravity. The positions and widths of the bright rings are predicted precisely. The predictive values for supermassive black holes are universal for a quite general class of quantum-modified spacetimes with the phenomenon of black hole to white hole transition. Thus, our result opens a new experimental window to test this phenomenon predicted by quantum gravity.

Abstract:It is usually stated that the information storing region associated with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is enclosed by a sphere of diameter equal twice the Schwarzschild radius. We point out that this cannot apply to a quantum black hole. The deviation is particularly revealed when the latter is maximally correlated with its Hawking radiation. Specifically, we demonstrate that the size of the entropy sphere associated with the underlying microstructure has to be necessarily broadened when the fine grained radiation entropy becomes maximal. Such an enlargement is understood to be the consequence of unitarization effects in quantum gravity and aligns with recent findings in holography arguing that purification happens via semiclassically invisible quantum correlations extending across the black hole atmosphere. In the present work, we consider an evaporating black hole in asymptotically flat spacetime. We assume that the standard thermodynamical description is valid so long the black hole viewed from the outside is sufficiently large, radiation escaping into the future null infinity can be described on a smooth spacetime background, and the von Neumann entropy of Hawking radiation evolves unitarily. We briefly comment on the black hole singularity.

Abstract:Understanding the end state of black hole evaporation, the microscopic origin of black hole entropy, the information loss paradox, and the nature of the singularity arising in gravitational collapse - these are outstanding challenges for any candidate quantum theory of gravity. Recently, a midisuperspace model of quantum gravitational collapse has been solved using a lattice regularization scheme. It is shown that the mass of an eternal black hole follows the Bekenstein spectrum, and a related argument provides a fairly accurate estimate of the entropy. The solution also describes a quantized mass-energy distribution around a central black hole, which in the WKB approximation, is precisely Hawking radiation. The leading quantum gravitational correction makes the spectrum non-thermal, thus providing a plausible resolution of the information loss problem.
