Abstract:Scattering of time-harmonic waves from periodic structures at some fixed real-valued wave number becomes analytically difficult whenever there arise surface waves: These nonzero solutions to the homogeneous scattering problem physically correspond to modes propagating along the periodic structure and clearly imply nonuniqueness of any solution to the scattering problem. In this paper, we consider a medium that is defined in the upper two-dimensional half-space by a penetrable and periodic contrast. We prove that there is a so-called limiting absorption solution to the associated scattering problem. By definition, such a solution is the limit of a sequence of unique solutions for artificial complex-valued wave numbers tending to the above-mentioned real-valued wave number. Our method of proof seems to be new: By the Floquet--Bloch transform we first reduce the scattering problem to a finite-dimensional one that is set in the linear space spanned by all surface waves. In this space, we then compute explicitly which modes propagate along the periodic structure to the left or to the right. This finally yields a representation for our limiting absorption solution which leads to a proper extension of the well known upward propagating radiation condition. Finally, we prove the uniqueness of a solution under this radiation condition.

To the best of our knowledge, our results are the sharpest yet obtained. The steepest descent method plays an important role in the proofs of our results. Further, as an application of our new results, we derive the uniform far-field asymptotics of the scattered field to the acoustic scattering problem by buried obstacles in a two-layered medium with a locally rough interface. The results obtained in this paper provide a theoretical foundation for our recent work, where direct imaging methods have been developed to image the locally rough interface from phaseless total-field data or phased far-field data at a fixed frequency. It is believed that the results obtained in this paper will also be useful on its own right.

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior of the massless Dirac equation coupled to a Coulomb potential. For nice enough initial data, we find a joint asymptotic expansion for solutions near the null and future infinities and characterize explicitly the decay rates seen in the expansion. This paper can be viewed as a successor to previous work on asymptotic expansions for the radiation field. The key new elements are propagation estimates near the singularity of the potential, building on work of the first author with Wunsch and an explicit calculation with hypergeometric functions to determine the rates of decay.

Linear waves on the expanding region of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes: forward asymptotics and scattering from infinity

Abstract:We study solutions to the linear wave equation on the cosmological region of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that all sufficiently regular finite-energy solutions to the linear equation possess a particular finite-order asymptotic expansion near the future boundary. Specifically, we prove that several terms in this asymptotic expansion are identically zero. This is accomplished with new weighted higher-order energy estimates that capture the global expansion of the cosmological region. Furthermore we prove existence and uniqueness of scattering solutions to the linear wave equation on the expanding region. Given two pieces of scattering data at infinity, we construct solutions that have the same asymptotics as forward solutions. The proof involves constructing asymptotic solutions to the wave equation, as well as a new weighted energy estimate that is suitable for the backward problem. This scattering result extends to a large class of expanding spacetimes, including the Kerr de Sitter family.

Abstract:For the Dirichlet rough-surface scattering problem in two dimensions, we prove that the Green's function defined with the angular spectrum representation radiation condition satisfies the Sommerfeld radiation condition over the half-plane. To the best of our knowledge, such an outgoing property has not been rigorously justified in the literature. We prove well-posedness for the time-harmonic acoustic scattering of plane waves from locally perturbed periodic surfaces. It will be shown that the scattered wave of an incoming plane wave is the sum of the scattered wave for the unperturbed periodic surface plus an additional scattered wave satisfying Sommerfeld's condition on the half-plane. Whereas the scattered wave for the unperturbed periodic surface has a far field consisting of a finite number of propagating plane waves, the additional field contributes to the far field by a far-field pattern defined in the half-plane directions similarly to the pattern known for bounded obstacles.

Scattering theory for $C^2$ long-range potentials

Abstract:We develop a complete stationary scattering theory for Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$, with $C^2$ long-range potentials. This extends former results in the literature, in particular [Is1, Is2, II, GY], which all require a higher degree of smoothness. In this sense the spirit of our paper is similar to [Hö2, Chapter XXX], which also develops a scattering theory under the $C^2$ condition, however being very different from ours. While the Agmon-Hörmander theory is based on the Fourier transform, our theory is not and may be seen as more related to our previous approach to scattering theory on manifolds [IS1,IS2,IS3]. The $C^2$ regularity is natural in the Agmon-Hörmander theory as well as in our theory, in fact probably being `optimal' in the Euclidean setting. We prove equivalence of the stationary and time-dependent theories by giving stationary representations of associated time-dependent wave operators. Furthermore we develop a related stationary scattering theory at fixed energy in terms of asymptotics of generalized eigenfunctions of minimal growth. A basic ingredient of our approach is a solution to the eikonal equation constructed from the geometric variational scheme of [CS]. Another key ingredient is strong radiation condition bounds for the limiting resolvents originating in [HS]. They improve formerly known ones [Is1, Sa] and considerably simplify the stationary approach. We obtain the bounds by a new commutator scheme whose elementary form allows a small degree of smoothness.

Abstract:The radiation condition is the key question in the mathematical modelling for scattering problems in unbounded domains. Mathematically, it plays the role as the "boundary condition" at the infinity, which guarantees the well-posedness of the mathematical problem; physically, it describes the far-field asymptotic behaviour of the physical waves. In this paper, we focus on the radiation conditions for scattering problems above (locally perturbed) periodic surfaces. According to Hu et al. (2021), the radiating solution satisfies the Sommerfeld radiation condition: $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial r}-i k u=o(r^{-1/2}).$$ Although there are literature which have studied this problem, there is no specific method for dealing with periodic structures. Due to this reason, the important properties for the periodic structures may be ignored. Moreover, the existing method is not extendable to bi-periodic structures in three dimensional spaces. In this paper, we study the radiation condition for the time-harmonic scattering problem with periodic surfaces, which is modelled by the Helmholtz equation. We introduce a novel method based on the Floquet-Bloch transform, which, to the best of the author's knowledge, is the first method that works particularly for periodic media. With this method, we improve the Sommerfeld radiation condition for the scattered field from periodic media to: $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial r}-i k u=O(r^{-3/2}).$$ More importantly, the prospect of extending this method to 3D cases is optimistic.

Asymptotic expansions for semilinear waves on asymptotically flat spacetimes

Abstract:We establish precise asymptotic expansions for solutions to semilinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearities on asymptotically flat spacetimes. For cubic nonlinearities $a(t,x)\phi^3$, we prove $\phi(t, x) = 2c t^{-2} + O(t^{-3+})$ in compact spatial regions, with $c$ computable. For $a(t,x)\phi^p$ with $p \geq 4$, we show $\phi(t, x) = d t^{-3} + O(t^{-4+})$, extending Price's law to the nonlinear setting. Our approach combines radiation field analysis with a generalized low-energy resolvent expansion, providing a bridge between spectral and physical space methods. These results sharpen previous decay estimates and yield complete asymptotics across the entire spacetime, including black hole backgrounds.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit formula for the diagonal singularities of the scattering amplitude for the Dirac equation with short-range electromagnetic potentials. Using this expansion we uniquely reconstruct an electric potential and magnetic field from the high-energy limit of the scattering amplitude. Moreover, supposing that the electric potential and magnetic field are asymptotic sums of homogeneous terms we give the unique reconstruction procedure for these asymptotics from the scattering amplitude, known for some energy $E.$ Furthermore, we prove that the set of the averaged scattering solutions to the Dirac equation is dense in the set of all solutions to the Dirac equation that are in $L^{2}\left( \Omega\right) ,$ where $\Omega$ is any connected bounded open set in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with smooth boundary, and we show that if we know an electric potential and a magnetic field for $\mathbb{R}^{3}\setminus\Omega$, then the scattering amplitude, given for some energy $E$, uniquely determines these electric potential and magnetic field everywhere in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Combining this uniqueness result with the reconstruction procedure for the asymptotics of the electric potential and the magnetic field we show that the scattering amplitude, known for some $E$, uniquely determines a electric potential and a magnetic field, that are asymptotic sums of homogeneous terms, which converges to the electric potential and the magnetic field, respectively. Moreover, we discuss the symmetries of the kernel of the scattering matrix, which follow from the parity, charge-conjugation and time-reversal transformations for the Dirac operator.

Abstract:Using the recent analysis of the output of the low-energy resolvent of Schrödinger operators on asymptotically conic manifolds (including Euclidean space) when the potential is short-range, we produce detailed asymptotic expansions for the solutions of the initial-value problem for the Schrödinger equation (assuming Schwartz initial data). Asymptotics are calculated in all joint large-radii large-time regimes, these corresponding to the boundary hypersurfaces of a particular compactification of spacetime.

Long-time asymptotics and the radiation condition for linear evolution equations on the half-line with time-periodic boundary conditions

Abstract:The large time $t$ asymptotics for scalar, constant coefficient,linear, third order, dispersive equations are obtained for asymptotically time-periodic Dirichlet boundary data and zero initial data on the half-line modeling a wavemaker acting upon an initially quiescent medium. The asymptotic Dirichlet-to-Neumann (D-N) map is constructed by expanding upon the recently developed $Q$-equation method. The D-N map is proven to be unique if and only if the radiation condition that selects the unique wavenumber branch of the dispersion relation for a sinusoidal, time-dependent boundary condition holds: (i) for frequencies in a finite interval, the wavenumber is real and corresponds to positive group velocity, (ii) for frequencies outside the interval, the wavenumber is complex with positive imaginary part. For fixed spatial location $x$, the corresponding asymptotic solution is (i) a traveling wave or (ii) a spatially decaying, time-periodic wave. Uniform-in-$x$ asymptotic solutions for the physical cases of the linearized Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equations are obtained via integral asymptotics. The linearized BBM asymptotics are found to quantitatively agree with viscous core-annular fluid experiments.

Direct and inverse time-harmonic scattering by Dirichlet periodic curves with local perturbations

Abstract:This is a continuation of the authors' previous work (A. Kirsch, Math. Meth. Appl. Sci., 45 (2022): 5737-5773.) on well-posedness of time-harmonic scattering by locally perturbed periodic curves of Dirichlet kind. The scattering interface is supposed to be given by a non-self-intersecting Lipschitz curve. We study properties of the Green's function and prove new well-posedness results for scattering of plane waves at a propagative wave number. In such a case there exist guided waves to the unperturbed problem, which are also known as Bounded States in the Continuity (BICs) in physics. In this paper uniqueness of the forward scattering follows from an orthogonal constraint condition enforcing on the total field to the unperturbed scattering problem. This constraint condition, which is also valid under the Neumann boundary condition, is derived from the singular perturbation arguments and also from the approach of approximating a plane wave by point source waves. For the inverse problem of determining the defect, we prove several uniqueness results using a finite or infinite number of point source and plane waves, depending on whether a priori information on the size and height of the defect is available.

Abstract:Consider scattering of electromagnetic waves by a nonmagnetic biperiodic structure. The structure separates the whole space into three regions: above and below the structure the medium is assumed to be homogeneous. Inside the structure, the medium is assumed to be de ned by a bounded measurable dielectric coe cient. Given the structure and a timeharmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on the structure, the scattering (di raction) problem is to predict the eld distributions away from the structure. Abstract:Abstract The focal point of the current study lies in investigating oblique wave scattering within the framework of linear potential theory, with particular attention to scenarios involving asymmetric trenches of both finite and infinite depths. By employing the eigenfunction expansion method, the physical problem undergoes a transformation into an equivalent boundary value problem. This newly formulated problem is characterized by a system of four weakly singular integral equations, which pertain to the horizontal component of velocity across the gaps situated above the edges of the trenches. The solution to these integral equations is achieved through the utilization of a multi-term Galerkin approximation method. This approach involves expansions using ultraspherical Gegenbauer polynomials as basis functions, coupled with the appropriate weight functions tailored to address the one-third singularity. Graphical representations are employed to depict the numerical evaluations of reflection and transmission coefficients across various non-dimensional parameters. These visualizations offer insight into the behavior and dependencies of these coefficients under different conditions. To validate the accuracy of the current model, it is compared against previously published results available in the literature.
