Abstract:The two-dimensional $Q$-state Potts model with real couplings has a first-order transition for $Q>4$. We study a loop-model realization in which $Q$ is a continuous parameter. This model allows for the collision of a critical and a tricritical fixed point at $Q=4$, which then emerge as complex conformally invariant theories at $Q>4$, or even complex $Q$, for suitable complex coupling constants. All critical exponents can be obtained as analytic continuation of known exact results for $Q \le 4$. We verify this scenario in detail for $Q=5$ using transfer-matrix computations.

Emerging Jordan forms, with applications to critical statistical models and conformal field theory

Abstract:Two novel frameworks for handling mathematical and physical problems are introduced. The first, the emerging Jordan form, generalizes the concept of the Jordan canonical form, a well-established tool of linear algebra. The second, dual Jordan quantum physics, generalizes the framework of quantum physics to one in which the hermiticity postulate is considerably relaxed. These frameworks are then used to resolve some long-outstanding problems in theoretical physics, coming from critical statistical models and conformal field theory. I describe these problems and the difficulties involved in finding satisfactory solutions, then show how the concepts of emerging Jordan forms and dual Jordan quantum physics are naturally suited to overcoming these difficulties. Although their applications in this work are limited in scope to rather specific problems, the frameworks themselves are completely general, and I describe ways in which they may be used in other areas of mathematics and physics. Several appendices close the work, which include improvements to a widely used computational algorithm and corrections to some published data.

From Trees to Galaxies: The Potts Model on a Random Surface

Abstract:The matrix model of random surfaces with c = inf. has recently been solved and found to be identical to a random surface coupled to a q-states Potts model with q = inf. The mean field-like solution exhibits a novel type of tree structure. The natural question is, down to which--if any--finite values of c and q does this behavior persist? In this work we develop, for the Potts model, an expansion in the fluctuations about the q = inf. mean field solution. In the lowest--cubic--non-trivial order in this expansion the corrections to mean field theory can be given a nice interpretation in terms of structures (trees and ``galaxies'') of spin clusters. When q drops below a finite q_c, the galaxies overwhelm the trees at all temperatures, thus suppressing mean field behavior. Thereafter the phase diagram resembles that of the Ising model, q=2.

Abstract:We derive the exact actions of the Q -state Potts model valid on any graph, first for the spin degrees of freedom, and second for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters. In both cases the field is a traceless Q -component scalar field Φ α . For the Ising model ( Q = 2), the field theory for the spins has upper critical dimension = 4, whereas for the clusters it has = 6. As a consequence, the probability for three points to be in the same cluster is not given by mean-field theory for d within 4 < d < 6. We estimate the associated universal structure constant as . This shows that some observables in the Ising model have an upper critical dimension of 4, while others have an upper critical dimension of 6. Combining perturbative results from the ε = 6 – d expansion with a non-perturbative treatment close to dimension d = 4 allows us to locate the shape of the critical domain of the Potts model in the whole ( Q , d ) plane.

Non compact continuum limit of two coupled Potts models

Abstract:We study two $Q$-state Potts models coupled by the product of their energy operators, in the regime $2 < Q \le 4$ where the coupling is relevant. A particular choice of weights on the square lattice is shown to be equivalent to the integrable $a_3^{(2)}$ vertex model. It corresponds to a selfdual system of two antiferromagnetic Potts models, coupled ferromagnetically. We derive the Bethe Ansatz equations and study them numerically for two arbitrary twist angles. The continuum limit is shown to involve two compact bosons and one non compact boson, with discrete states emerging from the continuum at appropriate twists. The non compact boson entails strong logarithmic corrections to the finite-size behaviour of the scaling levels, the understanding of which allows us to correct an earlier proposal for some of the critical exponents. In particular, we infer the full set of magnetic scaling dimensions (watermelon operators) of the Potts model.

Abstract:Scaling, universality, and renormalization are three pillars of modern critical phenomena. According to the hypothesis of universality, continuous phase transitions fall into classes mainly determined by spatial dimensionality and symmetry of the order parameter. The latter is usually reflected by the degeneracy of the ground state of the Hamiltonian. However, for certain systems at criticality, a higher symmetry emerges in the order parameter, and the associated critical behavior may become very rich. Such emergent symmetry has been found in spin ice systems, deconfined quantum critical points, high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors, and so forth, and are often accompanied by very interesting critical phenomena. New results presented here are based on Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling of a series of $q$-state Potts models on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in one lattice direction and antiferromagnetic interactions in the other two directions. The staggered magnetization appears to display an emergent continuous O($n$) symmetry with $n$=$q$-1, as illustrated by two-dimensional intersections of the distribution functions. Also the estimated critical exponents are consistent with the O($n$=$q$-1) universality classes.
Geometric Properties of Two-Dimensional Critical and Tricritical Potts Models

Abstract:We investigate geometric properties of the general q-state Potts model in two dimensions, and define geometric clusters as sets of lattice sites in the same Potts state, connected by nearest-neighbor bonds with variable probability p. We find that, besides the random-cluster fixed point, both the critical and the tricritical Potts models have another fixed point in the p direction. For the critical model, the random-cluster fixed point p(r) is unstable and the other point p(g) > or =p(r) is stable; while p(r) is stable and p(g) < or =p(r) is unstable at tricriticality. Moreover, we show that the fixed point p(g) of a critical and tricritical q-state Potts models can be regarded to correspond to p(r) of a tricritical and critical q'-state Potts models, respectively. In terms of the coupling constant of the Coulomb gas g, these two models are related as gg'=16. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain p(g)=0.6227(2) and 0.6395(2) for the tricritical Blume-Capel and the q=3 Potts model, respectively, and confirm the predicted values of the magnetic and bond-dilution exponents near p(g).

Abstract:Potts spin systems play a fundamental role in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory and can be studied within the spin, the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) bond or the q-flow (loop) representation. We introduce a Loop-Cluster (LC) joint model of bond-occupation variables interacting with q-flow variables and formulate an LC algorithm that is found to be in the same dynamical universality as the celebrated Swendsen-Wang algorithm. This leads to a theoretical unification for all the representations, and numerically, one can apply the most efficient algorithm in one representation and measure physical quantities in others. Moreover, by using the LC scheme, we construct a hierarchy of geometric objects that contain as special cases the q-flow clusters and the backbone of FK clusters, the exact values of whose fractal dimensions in two dimensions remain as an open question. Our work not only provides a unified framework and an efficient algorithm for the Potts model but also brings new insights into the rich geometric structures of the FK clusters.

Abstract:We investigate the two-dimensional $q=3$ and 4 Potts models with a variable interaction range by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. For not too large $z$, the transitions fit well in the universality classes of the short-range Potts models. However, at longer ranges the transitions become discontinuous. For $q=3$ we locate a tricritical point separating the continuous and discontinuous transitions near $z=80$, and a critical fixed point between $z=8$ and 12. For $q=4$ the transition becomes discontinuous for $z > 16$. The scaling behavior of the $q=4$ model with $z=16$ approximates that of the $q=4$ merged critical-tricritical fixed point predicted by the renormalization scenario.
Emergent O(n) Symmetry in a Series of 3D Potts Models

Abstract:We study the q-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions along one lattice direction, and antiferromagnetic interactions along the two other directions. As the temperature T decreases, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition that fits in the universality class of the 3D O(n) model with n=q-1. This conclusion is based on the estimated critical exponents, and histograms of the order parameter. At even smaller T we find, for q=4 and 5, a first-order transition to a phase with a different type of long-range order. This long-range order dissolves at T=0, and the system effectively reduces to a disordered two-dimensional Potts antiferromagnet. These results are obtained by means of Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling.

Abstract:We explore the Potts model on the generalized decorated square lattice, with both nearest (J(1)) and next-nearest (J(2)) neighbor interactions. Using the tensor renormalization-group method augmented by higher order singular value decompositions, we calculate the spontaneous magnetization of the Potts model with q = 2, 3, and 4. The results for q = 2 allow us to benchmark our numerics using the exact solution. For q = 3, we find a highly degenerate ground state with partial order on a single sublattice, but with vanishing entropy per site, and we obtain the phase diagram as a function of the ratio J(2)/J(1). There is no finite-temperature transition for the q = 4 case when J(1) = J(2), whereas the magnetic susceptibility diverges as the temperature goes to zero, showing that the model is critical at T = 0.
Spontaneous Edge Order and Geometric Aspects of Two-Dimensional Potts Models

Abstract:Using suitable Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling, we investigate critical and tricritical surface phenomena of two-dimensional Potts models. For the critical two- and three-state models, we determine a surface scaling dimension describing percolation properties of the so-called Potts clusters near the edges. On this basis, we propose an exact expression describing this exponent for the whole critical branch. For tricritical Potts models we find that varying the surface coupling constant or the surface magnetic field can induce a continuous phase transition. At bulk tricriticality and sufficiently strong surface couplings, spontaneous one-dimensional order occurs on the edges. We determine several critical exponents describing these edge transitions. On the basis of these results and conformal field theory, we conjecture exact expressions for these exponents.

Abstract:We present a Monte Carlo study of the backbone and the shortest-path exponents of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn bond representation. We first use cluster algorithms to simulate the critical Potts model on the square lattice and obtain the backbone exponents d_{B}=1.7320(3) and 1.794(2) for Q=2,3, respectively. However, for large Q, the study suffers from serious critical slowing down and slowly converging finite-size corrections. To overcome these difficulties, we consider the O(n) loop model on the honeycomb lattice in the densely packed phase, which is regarded to correspond to the critical Potts model with Q=n^{2}. With a highly efficient cluster algorithm, we determine from domains enclosed by the loops d_{B}=1.64339(5),1.73227(8),1.7938(3),1.8384(5),1.8753(6) for Q=1,2,3,2+sqrt[3],4, respectively, and d_{min}=1.0945(2),1.0675(3),1.0475(3),1.0322(4) for Q=2,3,2+sqrt[3],4, respectively. Our estimates significantly improve over the existing results for both d_{B} and d_{min}. Finally, by studying finite-size corrections in backbone-related quantities, we conjecture an exact formula as a function of n for the leading correction exponent.

Abstract:We exhibit infinite families of two-dimensional lattices (some of which are triangulations or quadrangulations of the plane) on which the q-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition at arbitrarily large values of q. This unexpected result is proven rigorously by using a Peierls argument to measure the entropic advantage of sublattice long-range order. Additional numerical data are obtained using transfer matrices, Monte Carlo simulation, and a high-precision graph-theoretic method.

Abstract:We determine the backbone exponent X(b) of several critical and tricritical q-state Potts models in two dimensions. The critical systems include the bond percolation, the Ising, the q=2-sqrt[3], 3, and 4 state Potts, and the Baxter-Wu model, and the tricritical ones include the q=1 Potts model and the Blume-Capel model. For this purpose, we formulate several efficient Monte Carlo methods and sample the probability P2 of a pair of points connected via at least two independent paths. Finite-size-scaling analysis of P2 yields X(b) as 0.3566(2), 0.2696(3), 0.2105(3), and 0.127(4) for the critical q=2-sqrt[3], 1,2, 3, and 4 state Potts model, respectively. At tricriticality, we obtain X(b)=0.0520(3) and 0.0753(6) for the q=1 and 2 Potts model, respectively. For the critical q-->0 Potts model it is derived that X(b)=3/4. From a scaling argument, we find that, at tricriticality, X(b) reduces to the magnetic exponent, as confirmed by the numerical results.

Abstract:A phenomenological approach to the ferromagnetic two dimensional Potts model on square lattice is proposed. Our goal is to present a simple functional form that obeys the known properties possessed by the free energy of the q-state Potts model. The duality symmetry of the 2D Potts model together with the known results on its critical exponent {\alpha} allow to fix consistently the details of the proposed expression for the free energy. The agreement of the analytic ansatz with numerical data in the q=3 case is very good at high and low temperatures as well as at the critical point. It is shown that the q>4 cases naturally fit into the same scheme and that one should also expect a good agreement with numerical data. The limiting q=4 case is shortly discussed.
