Abstract:We study the transport properties of Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with potentials that are periodic in some directions and compactly supported in the others. Such systems are known to produce "surface states" that are confined near the support of the potential. We show that, under very mild assumptions, a class of surface states exhibits what we describe as directional ballistic transport, consisting of a strong form of ballistic transport in the periodic directions and its absence in the other directions. Furthermore, on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, we show that a dense set of surface states exhibit directional ballistic transport. In appendices, we generalize Simon's classic result on the absence of ballistic transport for pure point states [36], and prove a folklore theorem on ballistic transport for scattering states. In particular, this final result allows for a proof of ballistic transport for a dense set subset of $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ for periodic strip models.

Abstract:Abstract Transport phenomena are central to physics, and transport in the many-body and fully-quantum regime is attracting an increasing amount of attention. It has been recently revealed that some quantum spin chains support ballistic transport of excitations at all energies. However, when joining two semi-infinite ballistic parts, such as the XX and XXZ spin-1/2 models, our understanding suddenly becomes less established. Employing a matrix-product-state ansatz of the wavefunction, we study the relaxation dynamics in this latter case. Here we show that it takes place inside a light cone, within which two qualitatively different regions coexist: an inner one with a strong tendency towards thermalization, and an outer one supporting ballistic transport. We comment on the possibility that even at infinite time the system supports stationary currents and displays a non-zero Kapitza boundary resistance. Our study paves the way to the analysis of the interplay between transport, integrability, and local defects.

Ballistic vs. diffusive transport in metals

Abstract:Using the Boltzmann transport model, we show that, somewhat unintuitively, ballistic transport of electrons in metals is weaker than diffusive transport. This happens because the femtosecond-scale collision rates of the non-thermal electrons makes their mean-free path negligible. Our predictions are correlated with various photoluminescence and nonlinear optics experimental examples both for Continuous Wave (CW) and pulsed illumination, and open the way to easy modelling of the non-thermal electron distributions in metal nanostructures of arbitrary complexity.

Abstract:An analytical formula is derived for particle and energy densities of fermions and bosons, and their ballistic momentum and energy currents for anisotropic energy dispersions in generalized dimensions. The formulation considerably simplifies the comparison of the statistical properties and ballistic particle and energy transport currents of electrons, acoustic phonons, and photons in various dimensions in a unified manner. Assorted examples of its utility are discussed, ranging from blackbody radiation to Schottky diodes and ballistic transistors, quantized electrical and thermal conductance, generalized ballistic Seebeck and Peltier coefficients, their Onsager relations, the generalized Wiedemann-Franz law and the robustness of the Lorenz number, and ballistic thermoelectric power factors, all of which are obtained from the single formula. The new formulation predicts a thermoelectric power factor behaviour of 3D Dirac bands which has not been observed yet.

Nonreciprocal Ballistic Transport in Asymmetric Bands

Abstract:Nonreciprocal transport in uniform systems has attracted great research interest recently and the existing theories mainly focus on the diffusive regime. In this study, we uncover a novel scenario for nonreciprocal charge transport in the ballistic regime enabled by asymmetric band structures of the system. The asymmetry of the bands induces unequal Coulomb potentials within the system as the bias voltage imposed by the electrodes inverts its sign. As a result, the bands undergo different energy shifts as the current flows in opposite directions, giving rise to the nonreciprocity. Utilizing the gauge-invariant nonlinear transport theory, we show that the nonreciprocal transport predominantly originates from the second-order conductance, which violates the Onsager reciprocal relation but fulfills a generalized reciprocal relation similar to that of unidirectional magnetoresistance. The ballistic nonreciprocal transport phenomena differ from the diffusive ones by considering the internal asymmetric Coulomb potential, a factor not accounted for in diffusive cases but undeniably crucial in ballistic scenarios. Our work opens a avenue for implementing nonreciprocal transport in the ballistic regime and provides an alternative perspective for further experimental explorations for nonreciprocal transport.

Particle transport in open polygonal billiards: a scattering map

Abstract:Polygonal billiards exhibit a rich and complex dynamical behavior. In recent years polygonal billiards have attracted great attention due to their application in the understanding of anomalous transport, but also at the fundamental level, due to its connections with diverse fields in mathematics. We explore this complexity and its consequences on the properties of particle transport in infinitely long channels made of the repetitions of an elementary open polygonal cell. Borrowing ideas from the Zemlyakov-Katok construction, we construct an interval exchange transformation classified by the singular directions of the discontinuities of the billiard flow over the translation surface associated to the elementary cell. From this, we derive an exact expression of a scattering map of the cell connecting the outgoing flow of trajectories with the unconstrained incoming flow. The scattering map is defined over a partition of the coordinate space, characterized by different families of trajectories. Furthermore, we obtain an analytical expression for the average speed of propagation of ballistic modes, describing with high accuracy the speed of propagation of ballistic fronts appearing in the tails of the distribution of the particle displacement. The symbolic hierarchy of the trajectories forming these ballistic fronts is also discussed.

Abstract:When discussing the resistance of an atomic- or nanometre-size contact we should consider both its ballistic and its diffusive contributions. But there is a contribution of the leads to the resistance of the contact as well. In this context, the geometry and the roughness of the surfaces limiting the system will contribute to the resistance, and these contributions should be added to the ideal ballistic resistance of the nanocontact. We have calculated, for metallic materials, the serial resistance of the leads arising from the roughness, and our calculations show that the ohmic resistance is as important as the ballistic resistance of the constriction. The classical resistance is a lower limit to the quantum resistance of the leads. Many examples of earlier experiments show that the mean free path of the transport electrons is of the order of the size of the contacts or the leads. This is not compatible with the idea of ballistic transport. This result may put in serious difficulties the current, existing interpretation of experimental data in metals where only small serial resistances compared with the ballistic component of the total resistance have been taken into account. The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is also discussed and the serial corrections appear to be smaller than for metals. Experiments with these last systems are proposed that may reveal new interesting aspects in the physics of ballistic and diffusive transport.

Abstract:This article reviews the physical processes responsible for the transport and deposition of particles and their theoretical modeling. Both laminar and turbulent processes are considered, emphasizing the physical understanding of the various transport mechanisms. State-of-the-art computational methods for determining particle motion and deposition are discussed, including stochastic Lagrangian particle tracking and a unified Eulerian advection-diffusion approach. The theory presented includes Brownian and turbulent diffusion, turbophoresis, thermophoresis, inertial impaction, gravitational settling, electrical forces, and the effects of surface roughness and particle interception. The article describes two example applications: the deposition of particles in the human respiratory tract and deposition in gas and steam turbines.

Observation of Ballistic Thermal Transport in a Nonintegrable Classical Many-Body System

Abstract:We report, for the first time, the observation of ballistic thermal transport in a nonintegrable classical many-body system. This claim is substantiated by appropriately incorporating long-range interactions into the system, which exhibits all characteristic hallmarks of ballistic heat transport, including the presence of equilibrium dynamical correlations exhibiting ballistic scaling, a size-independent energy current and a flat bulk temperature profile. These findings hold true for large system sizes (long times), indicating that ballistic heat transport is valid in the thermodynamic limit. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the presence of traveling discrete breathers in the relevant nonintegrabel systems surpassing conventional solitons in a nonlinear integrable Toda system.

Finite Larmor radius effects on E×B weak turbulence transport

Abstract:Transport of test particles in two-dimensional weak turbulence with waves propagating along the poloidal direction is studied using a reduced model. Finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects are included by gyroaveraging over one particle orbit. For low wave amplitudes the motion is mostly regular with particles trapped in the potential wells. As the amplitude increases the trajectories become chaotic and the Larmor radius modifies the orbits. For a thermal distribution of FLRs the particle distribution function (PDF) is Gaussian for small ρth (thermal gyroradius) but becomes non-Gaussian for large ρth. However, the time scaling of transport is diffusive, as characterized by a linear dependence of the variance of the PDF with time. An explanation for this behavior is presented that provides an expression for an effective diffusion coefficient and reproduces the numerical results for large wave amplitudes which implies generalized chaos. When a shear flow is added in the direction of wave propagation, a modified model is obtained that produces free-streaming particle trajectories in addition to trapped ones; these contribute to ballistic transport for low wave amplitude but produce super-ballistic transport in the chaotic regime. As in the previous case, the PDF is Gaussian for low ρth becoming non-Gaussian as it increases. The perpendicular transport presents the same behavior as in the case with no flow but the diffusion is faster in presence of the flow.

Abstract:I discuss an apparently simple ballistics problem: the time it takes an object to fall a small vertical distance near the surface of the Earth. It turns out to be not so simple; I spend a great deal of time on the quantitative assessment of the assumptions involved, especially with regards to the influence of the air. The point is \emph{not} to solve the problem; indeed I don't even end up solving the problem exactly. I introduce dimensional analysis to perform all of the calculations approximately. The principal theme of the lecture is that \emph{real} physics can be very different from ``textbook'' physics, since in the real world you aren't ever told what equations are appropriate, or why.

Abstract:In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

Ballistic Impact of Dense Particle Suspensions

Abstract:The ballistic impact of various dense particle suspensions is of interest for the development of superior materials for personal protective equipment. The dynamic response of the fluids under impact of a fragment simulating projectile at various incident velocities was examined for this purpose. High-speed fluid dynamic videos of these ballistic impacts were used to analyze the effects of various suspension parameters on the response of the fluids. It was found experimentally that the shear thickening behaviour of the suspensions dominated the response at low incident velocities, but the results converge based on density at higher impact velocities.

A simple Boltzmann transport equation for ballistic to diffusive transient heat transport

Abstract:Developing simplified, but accurate, theoretical approaches to treat heat transport on all length and time scales is needed to further enable scientific insight and technology innovation. Using a simplified form of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), originally developed for electron transport, we demonstrate how ballistic phonon effects and finite-velocity propagation are easily and naturally captured. We show how this approach compares well to the phonon BTE, and readily handles a full phonon dispersion and energy-dependent mean-free-path. This study of transient heat transport shows (i) how fundamental temperature jumps at the contacts depend simply on the ballistic thermal resistance, (ii) that phonon transport at early times approach the ballistic limit in samples of any length, and (iii) perceived reductions in heat conduction, when ballistic effects are present, originate from reductions in temperature gradient. Importantly, this framework can be recast exactly as the Cattaneo and hyperbolic heat equations, and we discuss how the key to capturing ballistic heat effects is to use the correct physical boundary conditions.

Abstract:The process of diffusion is the most elementary stochastic transport process. Brownian motion, the representative model of diffusion, played a important role in the advancement of scientific fields such as physics, chemistry, biology and finance. However, in recent decades, non-diffusive transport processes with non-Brownian statistics were observed experimentally in a multitude of scientific fields. Examples include human travel, in-cell dynamics, the motion of bright points on the solar surface, the transport of charge carriers in amorphous semiconductors, the propagation of contaminants in groundwater, the search patterns of foraging animals and the transport of energetic particles in turbulent plasmas. These examples showed that the assumptions of the classical diffusion paradigm, assuming an underlying uncorrelated (Markovian), Gaussian stochastic process, need to be relaxed to describe transport processes exhibiting a non-local character and exhibiting long-range correlations. This article does not aim at presenting a complete review of non-diffusive transport, but rather an introduction for readers not familiar with the topic. For more in depth reviews, we recommend some references in the following. First, we recall the basics of the classical diffusion model and then we present two approaches of possible generalizations of this model: the Continuous-Time-Random-Walk (CTRW) and the fractional Lévy motion (fLm).

Abstract:A unified theoretical description of ballistic and diffusive carrier transport in parallel-plane semiconductor structures is developed within the semiclassical model. The approach is based on the introduction of a thermoballistic current consisting of carriers which move ballistically in the electric field provided by the band edge potential, and are thermalized at certain randomly distributed equilibration points by coupling to the background of impurity atoms and carriers in equilibrium. The sum of the thermoballistic and background currents is conserved and identified with the physical current. The current-voltage characteristic for nondegenerate systems and the zero-bias conductance for degenerate systems are expressed in terms of a reduced resistance. For arbitrary mean free path and arbitrary shape of the band edge potential profile, this quantity is determined from the solution of an integral equation, which also provides the quasi-Fermi level and the thermoballistic current. To illustrate the formalism, a number of simple examples are considered explicitly. The present work is compared with previous attempts towards a unified description of ballistic and diffusive transport.

Ballistic Modes as a Source of Anomalous Charge Noise

Abstract:Steady-state currents generically occur both in systems with continuous translation invariance and in nonequilibrium settings with particle drift. In either case, thermal fluctuations advected by the current act as a source of noise for slower hydrodynamic modes. This noise is unconventional, since it is highly correlated along spacetime rays. We argue that, in quasi-one-dimensional geometries, the correlated noise from ballistic modes generically gives rise to anomalous full counting statistics (FCS) for diffusively spreading charges. We present numerical evidence for anomalous FCS in two settings: (1) a two-component continuum fluid, and (2) the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) initialized in a nonequilibrium state.

Ballistic to diffusive transition for swimmers in a periodic vortex array

Abstract:We study the transport of rigid ellipsoidal swimmers in a periodic vortex array via numerical simulation and dynamical systems analysis. Via ensemble simulations, we show the counterintuitive result that slower swimming speeds can generate fast ballistic transport, while faster swimming speeds generate chaotic and diffusive transport, which is inherently slower in the long run. To explain this, we use the symmetry of the flow to construct a time-reversible Poincaré return map on a two-dimensional surface of section in phase space. For sufficiently small swimming speeds, we find stable periodic orbits on the surface of section surrounded by invariant tori, similar to Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser curves. Trajectories within these tori are ballistic. As the swimming speed is increased, the periodic orbits undergo a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations that destroys the ballistic tori. These bifurcations exactly match the ballistic to diffusive transition from the ensemble simulations. Additional ensemble simulations are used to test the robustness of these results to noise. The ballistic behavior is destroyed as the strength of rotational diffusion increases. Abstract:Traffic-like collective movements are observed at almost all levels of biological systems. Molecular motor proteins like, for example, kinesin and dynein, which are the vehicles of almost all intra-cellular transport in eukaryotic cells, sometimes encounter traffic jam that manifests as a disease of the organism. Similarly, traffic jam of collagenase MMP-1, which moves on the collagen fibrils of the extracellular matrix of vertebrates, has also been observed in recent experiments. Novel efforts have been made to utilize some uni-cellular organisms as “micro-transporters”. Traffic-like movements of social insects like ants and termites on trails are, perhaps, more familiar in our everyday life. Experimental, theoretical and computational investigations in the last few years have led to a deeper understanding of the generic or common physical principles involved in these phenomena. In this review we critically examine the current status of our understanding, expose the limitations of the existing methods, mention open challenging questions and speculate on the possible future directions of research in this interdisciplinary area where physics meets not only chemistry and biology but also (nano-)technology.
