Limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and local times of the periodic Lorentz gas with infinite horizon

Abstract:This work is a contribution to the study of the ergodic and stochastic properties of Z^d-periodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure. We establish functional limit theorems for natural Birkhoff sums related to local times of the Z^d-periodic Lorentz gas with infinite horizon, for both the collision map and the flow. In particular, our results apply to the difference between the numbers of collisions in two different cells. Because of the Z^d-periodicity of the model we are interested in, these Birkhoff sums can be rewritten as additive functionals of a Birkhoff sum of the Sinai billiard. For completness and in view of future studies, we state a general result of convergence of additive functionals of Birkhoff sums of chaotic probability preserving dynamical systems under general assumptions.

Strong mixing for the periodic Lorentz gas flow with infinite horizon

Abstract:We establish strong mixing for the $\mathbb Z^d$-periodic, infinite horizon, Lorentz gas flow for continuous observables with compact support. The essential feature of this natural class of observables is that their support may contain points with infinite free flights. Dealing with such a class of functions is a serious challenge and there is no analogue of it in the finite horizon case. The mixing result for the aforementioned class of functions is obtained via new results: 1) mixing for continuous observables with compact support consisting of configurations at a bounded time from the closest collision; 2) a tightness-type result that allows us to control the configurations with long free flights. To prove 1), we establish a mixing local limit theorem for the Sinai billiard flow with infinite horizon, previously an open question.

Abstract:In a recent paper by Spătaru [Precise asymptotics for a series of T.L. Lai, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 132 (11) (2004) 3387–3395] a precise asymptotics in the law of the logarithm for sequence of i.i.d. random variables has been established. In this paper we show that there is an analogous result for strictly stationary φ-mixing sequence. To prove this result, we have to use a different method. One of our main tools is the Gaussian approximation technique.

Abstract:We construct and study the stochastic force field generated by a Poisson distribution of sources at finite density, $x_1,x_2,\cdots$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ each of them yielding a long range potential $Q_i\Phi(x-x_i)$ with possibly different charges $Q_i \in \mathbb{R}$. The potential $\Phi$ is assumed to behave typically as $|x|^{-s}$ for large $|x|$, with $s > 1/2$. We will denote the resulting random field as "generalized Holtsmark field". We then consider the dynamics of one tagged particle in such random force fields, in several scaling limits where the mean free path is much larger than the average distance between the scatterers. We estimate the diffusive time scale and identify conditions for the vanishing of correlations. These results are used to obtain appropriate kinetic descriptions in terms of a linear Boltzmann or Landau evolution equation depending on the specific choices of the interaction potential.

Abstract:The Lorentz gas is one of the simplest and most widely-studied models for particle transport in matter. It describes a cloud of non-interacting gas particles in an infinitely extended array of identical spherical scatterers. The model was introduced by Lorentz in 1905 who, following the pioneering ideas of Maxwell and Boltzmann, postulated that in the limit of low scatterer density, the macroscopic transport properties of the model should be governed by a linear Boltzmann equation. The linear Boltzmann equation has since proved a useful tool in the description of various phenomena, including semiconductor physics and radiative transfer. A rigorous derivation of the linear Boltzmann equation from the underlying particle dynamics was given, for random scatterer configurations, in three seminal papers by Gallavotti, Spohn and Boldrighini-Bunimovich-Sinai. The objective of the present study is to develop an approach for a large class of deterministic scatterer configurations, including various types of quasicrystals. We prove the convergence of the particle dynamics to transport processes that are in general (depending on the scatterer configuration) not described by the linear Boltzmann equation. This was previously understood only in the case of the periodic Lorentz gas through work of Caglioti-Golse and Marklof-Strömbergsson. Our results extend beyond the classical Lorentz gas with hard sphere scatterers, and in particular hold for general classes of spherically symmetric finite-range potentials. We employ a rescaling technique that randomises the point configuration given by the scatterers’ centers. The limiting transport process is then expressed in terms of a point process that arises as the limit of the randomised point configuration under a certain volume-preserving one-parameter linear group action.

Abstract:We study the logarithmic Schrödinger equation with finite range potential on $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$. Through a ground-state representation, we associate and construct a global Gibbs measure and show that it satisfies a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We find estimates on the solutions in arbitrary dimension and prove the existence of weak solutions to the infinite-dimensional Cauchy problem.

We also bound the polynomial speed of mixing for observables in the Hölder space $H_{\alpha}$ depending on $\alpha$.

Abstract:In the paper we consider some piecewise deterministic Markov process whose continuous component evolves according to semiflows, which are switched at the jump times of a Poisson process. The associated Markov chain describes the states of this process directly after the jumps. Certain ergodic properties of these two objects have already been investigated in our recent papers. We now aim to establish the law of the iterated logarithm for the aforementioned continuous-time process. Moreover, we intend to do this using the already proven properties of the discrete-time system. The abstract model under consideration has interesting interpretations in real-life sciences, such as biology. Among others, it can be used to describe the stochastic dynamics of gene expression.

Abstract:We study heavy tailed random variables obtained by sampling an observable with a power singularity along an orbit of an expanding map on the circle. In the regime where the observables have infinite variance, we show that the set of limit points of the ergodic sum process, rescaled by $N^{1/s} (\ln N)^\alpha$, where $s$ is the index of limiting stable law, equals to the set of piecewise constant increasing functions with finitely many jumps. The proof relies on the multiple Borel-Cantelli Lemma proven in Dolgopyat, Fayad and Liu [J. Mod. Dyn. 18 (2022) 209--289].

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss general criteria of limsup law of iterated logarithm (LIL) for continuous-time Markov processes. We consider minimal assumptions for LILs to hold at zero(at infinity, respectively) in general metric measure spaces. We establish LILs under local assumptions near zero (near infinity, respectively) on uniform bounds of the expectations of first exit times from balls in terms of a function $\phi$ and uniform bounds on the tails of the jumping kernel in terms of a function $\psi$. The main result is that a simple ratio test in terms of the functions $\phi$ and $\psi$ completely determines whether there exists a positive non-decreasing function $\Psi$ such that $\limsup |X_t|/\Psi(t)$ is positive and finite a.s., or not. Our results cover a large class of subordinate diffusions, jump processes with mixed polynomial local growths, jump processes with singular jumping kernels and random conductance models with long range jumps.

The Boltzmann-Grad Limit of the Lorentz Gas in a Union of Lattices

Abstract:The Lorentz gas describes an ensemble of noninteracting point particles in an infinite array of spherical scatterers. In the present paper we consider the case when the scatterer configuration P is a fixed union of (translated) lattices in R^d, and prove that in the limit of low scatterer density, the particle dynamics converges to a random flight process. In the special case when the lattices in P are pairwise incommensurable, this settles a conjecture from [20]. The proof is carried out by applying a framework developed in recent work by Marklof and Strömbergsson [21], and central parts of our proof are the construction of an admissible marking of the point set P, and the verification of the uniform spherical equidistribution condition required in [21]. Regarding the random flight process obtained in the low density limit of the Lorentz gas, we prove that it can be reconstructed from the corresponding limiting flight processes arising from the individual commensurability classes of lattices in P. We furthermore prove that the free path lengths of the limit flight process have a distribution with a power law tail, whose exponent depends on the number of commensurability classes in P.

Abstract:The nonlinear Markov processes are the measure-valued dynamical systems which preserve positivity. They can be represented as the law of large numbers limits of general Markov models of interacting particles. In physics, the kinetic equations allow Lyapunov functionals (entropy, free energy, etc.). This may be considered as a sort of inheritance of the Lyapunov functionals from the microscopic master equations. We study nonlinear Markov processes that inherit thermodynamic properties from the microscopic linear Markov processes. We develop the thermodynamics of nonlinear Markov processes and analyze the asymptotic assumption, which are sufficient for this inheritance.
