Abstract:We investigate the optimal arrangements of two planar sets of given volume which are minimizing the $\ell_1$ double-bubble interaction functional. The latter features a competition between the minimization of the $\ell_1$ perimeters of the two sets and the maximization of their $\ell_1$ interface. We investigate the problem in its full generality for sets of finite perimeter, by considering the whole range of possible interaction intensities and all relative volumes of the two sets. The main result is the complete classification of minimizers.

Abstract:We study the double bubble problem where the perimeter is taken with respect to the hexagonal norm, i.e. the norm whose unit circle in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is the regular hexagon. We provide an elementary proof for the existence of minimizing sets for volume ratio parameter $\alpha\in (0,1]$ by arguing that any minimizer must belong to a small family of parameterized sets. This family is further simplified by showing that $60^{\circ}$ angles are not optimal as well as other geometric exclusions. We then provide a minimizer for all $\alpha\in(0,1]$ except at a single point, for which we find two minimizing configurations.

Abstract:We present a conjecture, based on computational results, on the area minimizing way to enclose and separate two arbitrary volumes in the flat cubic 3-torus. For comparable small volumes, we prove that an area minimizing double bubble in the 3-torus is the standard double bubble from R^3.

Abstract:We investigate minimal-perimeter configurations of two finite sets of points on the square lattice. This corresponds to a lattice version of the classical double-bubble problem. We give a detailed description of the fine geometry of minimisers and, in some parameter regime, we compute the optimal perimeter as a function of the size of the point sets. Moreover, we provide a sharp bound on the difference between two minimisers, which are generally not unique, and use it to rigorously identify their Wulff shape, as the size of the point sets scales up.

An Infinite Double Bubble Theorem

Abstract:The classical double bubble theorem characterizes the minimizing partitions of $\mathbb{R}^n$ into three chambers, two of which have prescribed finite volume. In this paper we prove a variant of the double bubble theorem in which two of the chambers have infinite volume. Such a configuration is an example of a (1,2)-cluster, or a partition of $\mathbb{R}^n$ into three chambers, two of which have infinite volume and only one of which has finite volume. A $(1,2)$-cluster is locally minimizing with respect to a family of weights $\{c_{jk}\}$ if for any $B_r(0)$, it minimizes the interfacial energy $\sum_{j<k} c_{jk} \mathscr{H}^n(\partial \mathscr{X}(j) \cap \partial\mathscr{X}(k) \cap B_r(0))$ among all variations with compact support in $B_r(0)$ which preserve the volume of $\mathscr{X}(1)$. For $(1,2)$ clusters, the analogue of the weighted double bubble is the weighted lens cluster, and we show that it is locally minimizing. Furthermore, under a symmetry assumption on $\{c_{jk}\}$ that includes the case of equal weights, the weighted lens cluster is the unique local minimizer in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\leq 7$, with the same uniqueness holding in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq 8$ under a natural growth assumption. We also obtain a closure theorem for locally minimizing $(N,2)$-clusters.

Abstract:The multi-bubble isoperimetric conjecture in $n$-dimensional Euclidean and spherical spaces from the 1990's asserts that standard bubbles uniquely minimize total perimeter among all $q-1$ bubbles enclosing prescribed volume, for any $q \leq n+2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^3$ was confirmed in 2000 by Hutchings-Morgan-Ritoré-Ros, and is nowadays fully resolved for all $n \geq 2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and triple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^2$ have also been resolved, but all other cases are in general open. We confirm the conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and on $\mathbb{S}^n$ for all $q \leq \min(5,n+1)$, namely: the double-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 2$, the triple-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 3$ and the quadruple-bubble conjectures for $n \geq 4$. In fact, we show that for all $q \leq n+1$, a minimizing cluster necessarily has spherical interfaces, and after stereographic projection to $\mathbb{S}^n$, its cells are obtained as the Voronoi cells of $q$ affine-functions, or equivalently, as the intersection with $\mathbb{S}^n$ of convex polyhedra in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Moreover, the cells (including the unbounded one) are necessarily connected and intersect a common hyperplane of symmetry, resolving a conjecture of Heppes. We also show for all $q \leq n+1$ that a minimizer with non-empty interfaces between all pairs of cells is necessarily a standard bubble. The proof makes crucial use of considering $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$ in tandem and of Möbius geometry and conformal Killing fields; it does not rely on establishing a PDI for the isoperimetric profile as in the Gaussian setting, which seems out of reach in the present one.

Abstract:The multi-bubble isoperimetric conjectures in $n$-dimensional Euclidean and spherical spaces from the 1990's assert that standard bubbles uniquely minimize total perimeter among all $q-1$ bubbles enclosing prescribed volume, for any $q \leq n+2$. The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^3$ was confirmed by Hutchings-Morgan-Ritoré-Ros (and later extended to $\mathbb{R}^n$). The double-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 2$) and the triple- and quadruple- bubble conjectures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{S}^n$ (for $n \geq 3$ and $n \geq 4$, respectively) were recently confirmed in our previous work, but the approach employed there does not seem to allow extending these results further. In this work, we confirm the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{S}^n$ ($n \geq 5$), and as a consequence, by approximation, also the quintuple-bubble conjecture on $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 5$) but without the uniqueness assertion. Moreover, we resolve the conjectures on $\mathbb{S}^n$ and on $\mathbb{R}^n$ (without uniqueness) for all $q \leq n+1$, \emph{conditioned} on the assumption that the singularities which appear at the meeting locus of several bubbles obey a higher-dimensional analogue of Plateau's laws. Another scenario we can deal with is when the bubbles are full-dimensional (``in general position"), or arrange in some good lower-dimensional configurations. To this end, we develop the spectral theory of the corresponding Jacobi operator (finding analogies with the quantum-graph formalism), and a new method for deforming the bubbles into a favorable configuration. As a by-product of our analysis, we show that the Jacobi operator on a minimizing configuration always has index precisely $q-1$. Several compelling conjectures of PDE flavor are proposed, which would allow extending our results to all $q \leq n+1$ unconditionally.

Abstract:Let $(M^{n+1},g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $3\le n+1\le 5$. We show that, if the metric $g$ is generic or if the metric $g$ has positive Ricci curvature, then $M$ contains infinitely many geometrically distinct constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, each enclosing half the volume of $M$. As an essential part of the proof, we develop an Almgren-Pitts type min-max theory for certain non-local functionals of the general form $$\Omega \mapsto \operatorname{Area}(\partial \Omega) - \int_\Omega h + f(\operatorname{Vol}(\Omega)).$$

On the Stability of Critical Points of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev Inequality

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the quantitative stability of critical points of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. Namely, we give quantitative estimates for the Choquard equation: $$-\Delta u=(I_{\mu}\ast|u|^{2_\mu^*}) u^{2_\mu^*-1}\ \ \text{in}\ \ \R^N,$$ where $u>0,\ N\geq 3,\ \mu\in(0,N)$, $I_{\mu}$ is the Riesz potential and $2_\mu^* \coloneqq \frac{2N-\mu}{N-2}$ is the upper Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical exponent. The Struwe's decomposition (see M. Struwe: Math Z.,1984) showed that the equation $\Delta u + u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2 }}=0$ has phenomenon of ``stable up to bubbling'', that is, if $u\geq0$ and $\|\Delta u+u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}\|_{(\mathcal{D}^{1,2})^{-1}}$ approaches zero, then $d(u)$ goes to zero, where $d(u)$ denotes the $\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\R^N)$-distance between $u$ and the set of all sums of Talenti bubbles. Ciraolo, F{}igalli and Maggi (Int. Math. Res. Not.,2017) obtained the f{}irst quantitative version of Struwe's decomposition with single bubble in all dimensions $N\geq 3$, i.e, $\displaystyle d(u)\leq C\|\Delta u+u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}\|_{L^{\frac{2N}{N+2}}}.$ For multiple bubbles, F{}igalli and Glaudo (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal., 2020) obtained quantitative estimates depending on the dimension, namely $$ d(u)\leq C\|\Delta u+u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}\|_{(\mathcal{D}^{1,2})^{-1}}, \hbox{ where } 3\leq N\leq 5,$$ which is invalid as $N\geq 6.$ \vskip0.1in \quad In this paper, we prove the quantitative estimate of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, we get $$d(u)\leq C\|\Delta u +(I_{\mu}\ast|u|^{2_\mu^*})|u|^{2_\mu^*-2}u\|_{(\mathcal{D}^{1,2})^{-1}}, \hbox{ when } N=3 \hbox{ and } 5/2< \mu<3.$$

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:Consider a non-negative number $t$ and a hyperplane $H$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose distance to the center of the hypercube $[0,1]^d$ is $t$. If $t$ is equal to $0$ and $H$ is orthogonal to a diagonal of $[0,1]^d$, it is known that the $(d-1)$-dimensional volume of $H\cap[0,1]^d$ is a strictly increasing function of $d$ when $d$ is at least $3$. The study of the monotonicity of this volume is extended for $t$ up to above $1/2$ and, when $d$ is large enough, for every non-negative $t$. In particular, a range for $t$ is identified such that this volume is a strictly decreasing function of $d$ over the positive integers. The local extremality of the $(d-1)$-dimensional volume of $H\cap[0,1]^d$ when $H$ is orthogonal to a diagonal of either $[0,1]^d$ or a lower dimensional face is also determined for the same values of $t$. It is shown for instance that when $t$ is above an explicit constant and $d$ is large enough, this volume is always strictly locally maximal when $H$ is orthogonal to a diagonal of $[0,1]^d$. A precise estimate for the convergence rate of the Eulerian numbers to their limit Gaussian behavior is provided along the way.

Limit theorems for mixed-norm sequence spaces with applications to volume distribution

Abstract:Let $p, q \in (0, \infty]$ and $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ be the mixed-norm sequence space of real matrices $x = (x_{i, j})_{i \leq m, j \leq n}$ endowed with the (quasi-)norm $\Vert x \Vert_{p, q} := \big\Vert \big( \Vert (x_{i, j})_{j \leq n} \Vert_q \big)_{i \leq m} \Vert_p$. We shall prove a Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel lemma for suitably scaled matrices chosen uniformly at random in the $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ unit balls $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$, and obtain both central and non-central limit theorems for their $\ell_p(\ell_q)$-norms. We use those limit theorems to study the asymptotic volume distribution in the intersection of two mixed-norm sequence balls. Our approach is based on a new probabilistic representation of the uniform distribution on $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$.

Abstract:We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense.Those extended hyperbolic structures can realize geometrically a decomposition of the manifold as the connected sum of components admitting a complete hyperbolic metric, along embedded spheres (or projective planes) which are totally geodesic space-like surfaces in the de Sitter part of the extended hyperbolic structure.
Volume Estimates for Singular sets and Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Hölder Coefficients

Abstract:Consider the solutions $u$ to the elliptic equation $\mathcal{L}(u) = \partial_i(a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u) + b^i(x) \partial_i u + c(x) u= 0$ with $a^{ij}$ assumed only to be Hölder continuous. In this paper we prove an explicit bound for $(n-2)$-dimensional Minkowski estimates of singular set $\mathcal{S}(u) = \{ x \in B_1 : u(x) = |\nabla u(x)| = 0\}$ and critical set $\mathcal{C}(u) \equiv \{ x\in B_{1} : |\nabla u(x)| = 0 \}$ in terms of the bound on doubling index, depending on $c \equiv 0$ or not. Here the Hölder assumption is sharp as it is the weakest condition in order to define the critical set of $u$ according to elliptic estimates. We can also obtain an optimal improvement on Cheeger-Naber-Valtorta's volume estimates on each quantitative stratum $\mathcal{S}^k_{\eta, r}$. The main difficulty in this situation is the lack of monotonicity formula which is essential to the quantitative stratification. In our proof, one key ingredient is a new almost monotonicity formula for doubling index under the Hölder assumption. Another key ingredient is the quantitative uniqueness of tangent maps. It deserves to note that our almost monotonicity is sufficient to address all the difficulties arising from the absence of monotonicity in the analysis of differential equations. We believe the idea could be applied to other relevant study.

Quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for classical capillarity problems

Abstract:We consider capillarity functionals which measure the perimeter of sets contained in a Euclidean half-space assigning a constant weight $\lambda \in (-1,1)$ to the portion of the boundary that touches the boundary of the half-space. Depending on $\lambda$, sets that minimize this capillarity perimeter among those with fixed volume are known to be suitable truncated balls lying on the boundary of the half-space. We first give a new proof based on an ABP-type technique of the sharp isoperimetric inequality for this class of capillarity problems. Next we prove two quantitative versions of the inequality: a first sharp inequality estimates the Fraenkel asymmetry of a competitor with respect to the optimal bubbles in terms of the energy deficit; a second inequality estimates a notion of asymmetry for the part of the boundary of a competitor that touches the boundary of the half-space in terms of the energy deficit. After a symmetrization procedure, the quantitative inequalities follow from a novel combination of a quantitative ABP method with a selection-type argument.

Abstract:In this paper, we study 3-dimensional complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature and a uniformly positive scalar curvature lower bound. Our main result is that, if this manifold has $k$ ends and finite first Betti number, then it has at most linear volume growth, and furthermore, if the negative part of Ricci curvature decays sufficiently fast at infinity, then we have an optimal asymptotic volume ratio $\limsup_{r\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\mathrm{Vol}(B(p, r))}{r}\leq4k\pi$. In particular, our results apply to 3-dimensional complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and a uniformly positive scalar curvature lower bound.
