Abstract:This note presents an elementary iterative construction of the generators for the complex $K$-groups $K_i(C(\SM^d))$ of the $d$-dimensional spheres. These generators are explicitly given as the restrictions of Dirac or Weyl Hamiltonians to the unit sphere. Connections to solid state physics are briefly elaborated on.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:Let G be a split real connected Lie group with finite center. In the first part of the paper we define and study formal elementary spherical functions. They are formal power series analogues of elementary spherical functions on G in which the role of the quasi-simple admissible G -representations is replaced by Verma modules. For generic highest weight we express the formal elementary spherical functions in terms of Harish-Chandra series and integrate them to spherical functions on the regular part of G . We show that they produce eigenstates for spin versions of quantum hyperbolic Calogero–Moser systems. In the second part of the paper we define and study special subclasses of global and formal elementary spherical functions, which we call global and formal N -point spherical functions. Formal N -point spherical functions arise as limits of correlation functions for boundary Wess–Zumino–Witten conformal field theory on the cylinder when the position variables tend to infinity. We construct global N -point spherical functions in terms of compositions of equivariant differential intertwiners associated with principal series representations, and express them in terms of Eisenstein integrals. We show that the eigenstates of the quantum spin Calogero–Moser system associated to N -point spherical functions are also common eigenfunctions of a commuting family of first-order differential operators, which we call asymptotic boundary Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov–Bernard operators. These operators are explicitly given in terms of folded classical dynamical r -matrices and associated dynamical k -matrices.

Abstract:We consider the general question of when all orbits under the unitary action of a finite group give a complex spherical design. Those orbits which have large stabilisers are then good candidates for being optimal complex spherical designs. This is done by developing the general theory of complex designs and associated (harmonic) Molien series for group actions. As an application, we give explicit constructions of some putatively optimal real and complex spherical t -designs.

The sphere complex of a locally finite graph

Abstract:For a locally finite graph $\Gamma$, we consider its mapping class group $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ as defined by Algom-Kfir-Bestvina. For these groups, we prove a generalization of the results of Laudenbach and Brendle-Broaddus-Putman, producing a $3$-manifold $M_{\Gamma}$ whose mapping class group surjects onto $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ with kernel a compact abelian group of sphere twists so that the corresponding short exact sequence splits. Along the way we obtain an induced faithful action of $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ on the sphere complex $\mathcal{S}(M_{\Gamma})$ of $M_{\Gamma}$, which is the simplicial complex whose simplices are isotopy classes of finite collections of spheres in $M_{\Gamma}$ which are pairwise disjoint. When $\Gamma$ has finite rank, we further show that the action of $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ on a certain natural subcomplex has elements with positive translation length, and also consider a candidate for an Outer space of such a graph. As another application, we prove that for many $\Gamma$, $\text{Map}(\Gamma)$ is quasi-isometric to a particular subgraph of $\mathcal{S}(M_{\Gamma})$, following Schaffer-Cohen. We also deduce analogs of the results of Domat-Hoganson-Kwak.

Abstract:We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the Td12 -genus, the Γ-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

On group and loop spheres

Abstract:We investigate the problem of defining group or loop structures on spheres, where by ''sphere'' we mean the level set q(x) = c of a general K-valued quadratic form q, for an invertible scalar c. When K is a field and q non-degenerate, then this corresponds to the classical theory of composition algebras; in particular, for K = R and positive definite forms, we obtain the sequence of the four real division algebras R, C, H (quaternions), O (octonions). Our theory is more general, allowing that K is merely a ring, and the form q possibly degenerate. To achieve this goal, we give a more geometric formulation, replacing the theory of binary composition algebras by ternary algebraic structures, thus defining categories of group spherical and of Moufang spherical spaces. In particular, we develop a theory of ternary Moufang loops, and show how it is related to the Albert-Cayley-Dickson construction and to generalized ternary octonion algebras. At the bottom, a starting point of the whole theory is the (elementary) result that every 2-dimensional quadratic space carries a canonical structure of commutative group spherical space.

Hodge-Elliptic genera, K3 surfaces and Enumerative Geometry

Abstract:K3 surfaces play a prominent role in string theory and algebraic geometry. The properties of their enumerative invariants have important consequences in black hole physics and in number theory. To a K3 surface string theory associates an Elliptic genus, a certain partition function directly related to the theory of Jacobi modular forms. A multiplicative lift of the Elliptic genus produces another modular object, an Igusa cusp form, which is the generating function of BPS invariants of K3 x E. In this note we will discuss a refinement of this chain of ideas. The Elliptic genus can be generalized to the so called Hodge-Elliptic genus which is then related to the counting of refined BPS states of K3 x E. We show how such BPS invariants can be computed explicitly in terms of different versions of the Hodge-Elliptic genus, sometimes in closed form, and discuss some generalizations.

Complex cobordism modulo $c_1$-spherical cobordism and related genera

Abstract:We prove that the ideal in complex cobordism ring $\MU^*$ generated by the polynomial generators $S=(x_1, x_k, k\geq 3)$ of $c_1$-spherical cobordism ring $W^*$, viewed as elements in $\MU^*$ by forgetful map is prime. Using the Baas-Sullivan theory of cobordism with singularities we define a commutative complex oriented cohomology theory $\MU^*_S(-)$, complex cobordism modulo $c_1$-spherical cobordism, with the coefficient ring $\MU^*/S$. Then any $\Sigma\subseteq S$ is also regular in $\MU^*$ and therefore gives a multiplicative complex oriented cohomology theory $\MU^*_{\Sigma}(-)$. The generators of $W^*[1/2]$ can be specified in such a way that for $\Sigma=(x_k, k\geq 3)$ the corresponding cohomology is identical to the Abel cohomology, previously constructed in \cite{BUSATO}. Another example corresponding to $\Sigma=(x_k, k\geq 5)$ gives the coefficient ring of the universal Buchstaber formal group law after tensored by $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$, i.e., is identical to the scalar ring of the Krichever-Hoehn complex elliptic genus \cite{KR}, \cite{H}.

Generators of the Poincaré Group for arbitrary tensors and spinor-tensors

Abstract:In this work, we systematically derive explicit expressions for the Poincaré Group generators on arbitrary-rank tensors and spinor-tensors in $D=3+1$ and $D=2+1$ spacetimes, thus generalizing previous works in the literature for the groups $ISO(3,1)$ and $ISO(2,1)$. From the Casimir eigenvalue equations, we demonstrate in a model-independent way the Fierz-Pauli constraints for massive particles for spins $\mathfrak{s}=5/2$, 3, and 4 in $D=3+1$ and helicities $\alpha=5/2$, 3, and 4 in $D=2+1$ dimensions. We also comment on the demonstration of the Fierz-Pauli constraints for the general case of arbitrary spin (helicity).

Canonical Sphere Bases for Simplicial and Cubical Complexes

Abstract:Sphere-bases are constructed for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vector space formed by the $k$-dimensional subcomplexes, of $n$-simplex (or $n$-cube), for which every $(k{-}1)$-face is contained in a positive even number of $k$-cells; addition is symmetric difference of the corresponding sets of $k$-cells. The bases consist of the boundaries of an algorithmically-specified family of $k{+}1$-simplexes or $k{+}1$-cubes. Geometric properties of these bases are investigated.

Symmetries of exotic spheres via complex and quaternionic Mahowald invariants

Abstract:We deduce the existence of smooth $U(1)$- and $Sp(1)$-actions on certain exotic spheres using complex and quaternionic analogues of the Mahowald {(root)} invariant. In particular, we prove that the complex (respectively, quaternionic) Mahowald invariant takes an element of $\pi_k^s$ represented by a homotopy sphere $\Sigma^k$ to an element {of $\pi_{k+\ell}$} represented by another homotopy sphere $\Sigma^{k+\ell}$ equipped with a smooth $U(1)$- (respectively, $Sp(1)$-) action with fixed points the original homotopy sphere $\Sigma^k\subset \Sigma^{k+\ell}$. This work is motivated by results of Stolz on the classical Mahowald invariant and smooth $C_2$-actions on homotopy spheres.

Abstract:We determine explicit generators for the ring of modular forms associated with the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ and of Picard rank 13 and higher. The K3 surfaces in question carry a canonical Jacobian elliptic fibration and the modular form generators appear as coefficients in the Weierstrass-type equations describing these fibrations.

Abstract:Let $\rho:\mathbb{Z}/k \mathbb{Z}\rightarrow \text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ be a representation of a finite abelian group and let $\Theta^{\text{gen}}\subset \text{Hom}_\mathbb{Z}(R(\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}),\mathbb{Q})$ be the space of generic stability conditions on the set of $G$-constellations. We provide a combinatorial description of all the chambers $C\subset\Theta^{\text{gen}}$ and prove that there are $k!$ of them. Moreover, we introduce the notion of simple chamber and we show that, in order to know all toric $G$-constellations, it is enough to build all simple chambers. We also prove that there are $k\cdot 2^{k-2} $ simple chambers. Finally, we provide an explicit formula for the tautological bundles $\mathscr{R}_C$ over the moduli spaces $\mathscr{M} _C$ for all chambers $C\subset \Theta^{\text{gen}}$ which only depends upon the chamber stair which is a combinatorial object attached to the chamber $C$.

Abstract:The sphere formula states that in an arbitrary finite abstract simplicial complex, the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at even-dimensional simplices is equal to the sum of the Euler characteristic of unit spheres centered at odd-dimensional simplices. It follows that if a geometry has constant unit sphere Euler characteristic, like a manifold, then all its unit spheres have zero Euler characteristic or the space itself has zero Euler characteristic. Especially, odd-dimensional manifolds have zero Euler characteristic, a fact usually verified either in algebraic topology using Poincaré duality together with Riemann-Hurwitz then deriving it from the existence of a Morse function, using that the Morse indices of the function and its negative add up to zero in odd dimensions. Gauss Bonnet also shows that odd-dimensional Dehn-Sommerville spaces have zero Euler characteristic because they have constant zero curvature. Zero curvature phenomenons can be understood integral geometrically as index expectation or as Dehn-Sommerville relations.

ku-theoretic spectral decompositions for spheres and projective spaces

Abstract:Ben-Zvi--Sakellaridis--Venkatesh described a conjectural extension of the geometric Satake equivalence to spherical varieties, whose spectral decomposition is described by Hamiltonian varieties. The goal of this article is to study their conjecture, especially in the case of spherical varieties of relative rank 1, using tools from homotopy theory. Our discussion relates their conjecture to classical topics in homotopy theory such as the EHP sequence and Hopf fibrations, as well as more modern topics such as Hochschild (co)homology. We will also study an analogue of the derived geometric Satake equivalence and of the Ben-Zvi--Sakellaridis--Venkatesh conjecture with coefficients in connective complex K-theory. In this generalized setting, the dual group (a la Langlands, Gaitsgory--Nadler, Sakellaridis--Venkatesh, Knop--Schalke) remains unchanged, but the specific dual "representation" of the dual group changes. On the spectral/Langlands dual side, we expect that the appropriate replacement of Hamiltonian varieties are given by what we term "ku-Hamiltonian varieties"; this is a notion interpolating between Hamiltonian and quasi-Hamiltonian varieties (a la Alekseev--Malkin--Meinrenken). Finally, we suggest possible generalizations to more exotic cohomology theories such as complex cobordism.

Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups

Abstract:There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Schur Quantization and Complex Chern-Simons theory

Abstract:Any four-dimensional Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory with eight supercharges can be associated to a certain complex symplectic manifold called the "K-theoretic Coulomb branch" of the theory. The collection of K-theoretic Coulomb branches include many complex phase spaces of great interest, including in particular the "character varieties" of complex flat connections on a Riemann surface. The SQFT definition endows K-theoretic Coulomb branches with a variety of canonical structures, including a deformation quantization. In this paper we introduce a canonical "Schur" quantization of K-theoretic Coulomb branches. It is defined by a variant of the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction, applied to protected Schur correlation functions of half-BPS line defects. Schur quantization produces an actual quantization of the complex phase space. As a concrete application, we apply this construction to character varieties in order to quantize Chern-Simons gauge theory with a complex gauge group. Other applications include the definition of a new quantum deformation of the Lorentz group, and the solution of certain spectral problems via dualities.
