Abstract:In the field of magnonics, which uses magnons, the quanta of spin waves, for energy-efficient data processing, significant progress has been made leveraging the capabilities of the inverse design concept. This approach involves defining a desired functionality and employing a feedback-loop algorithm to optimise the device design. In this study, we present the first experimental demonstration of a reconfigurable, lithography-free, and simulation-free inverse-design device capable of implementing various RF components. The device features a square array of independent direct current loops that generate a complex reconfigurable magnetic medium atop a Yttrium-Iron-Garnet (YIG) rectangular film for data processing in the gigahertz range. Showcasing its versatility, the device addresses inverse problems using two algorithms to create RF notch filters and demultiplexers. Additionally, the device holds promise for binary, reservoir, and neuromorphic computing applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to solve the problem of realizing reconfigurable, lithography - free, and analog - free magnonic devices by inverse design in the high - frequency (GHz) range. Specifically, the authors strive to develop a general - purpose inversely - designed magnonic device capable of performing the functions of multiple radio - frequency (RF) components. The following are the main objectives and background of this research: 1. **The need for efficient data processing**: - In fields such as 5G and 6G technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), self - driving cars, smart cities, and advanced medical monitoring systems, there is an increasing demand for high - speed, large - capacity wireless communication. - Researchers need to design, test, and optimize new, rapidly reconfigurable RF components that can operate with low energy consumption over a wide range of frequencies and bandwidths. 2. **The application potential of magnons**: - Magnons are the quanta of spin waves. They propagate in magnetic materials without involving particle motion, so they are an efficient way of energy transfer and data processing. - Spin waves can operate in the frequency range from sub - GHz to THz, covering the frequency range required by 5G and 6G technologies. 3. **The advantages of the inverse design method**: - Traditional magnonic device design usually requires complex numerical calculations and experimental verification, which is time - consuming and energy - intensive. - The inverse design method can greatly shorten the design cycle and improve flexibility by defining the required functions and using a feedback - loop algorithm to optimize the device design. 4. **Specific implementation goals**: - Develop a reconfigurable magnonic device based on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films. This device contains a 7x7 array of independent direct - current (DC) current loops and can generate complex reconfigurable magnetic fields. - Demonstrate the performance of this device in realizing RF notch filters and demultiplexers and prove its potential in binary, reservoir, and neuromorphic computing applications. ### Formula summary - **Objective function (Notch Filter)**: \[ O_{GA} = \left( S_{ref}^{21} - S_{I,app}^{21,l} \right)_{\text{filter BW}} - \overline{\left| S_{ref}^{21} - S_{I,app}^{21,l} \right|}_{\text{non - filter BW}} \] where \( S_{ref}^{21} \) is the transmission parameter when no current is applied, and \( S_{I,app}^{21,l} \) is the transmission parameter after applying the \( l \) - th current configuration. - **Attenuation power ratio**: \[ \frac{S_{I,app}^{21,l}}{S_{ref}^{21}} = 10^{\frac{-\Delta S_{21}(\text{dB})}{10}} \] where \( \Delta S_{21}(\text{dB}) = S_{I,app}^{21,l} - S_{ref}^{21} \) is the difference between the transmission signal at iteration \( l \) and the reference signal. Through these formulas and methods, researchers show how to use the inverse design method to optimize and realize high - performance magnonic devices, thus providing new possibilities for future high - frequency communication and computing technologies.
