Abstract:We show that certain two kinds of trisection diagrams of the doubles of the Mazur type 4-manifolds introduced by Akbulut and Kirby are standard. One is constructed by doubling a certain relative trisection diagram of the Mazur type. The other is constructed by using an algorithm taking Kirby diagrams to trisection diagrams.

Abstract:We establish a correspondence between trisections of smooth, compact, oriented $4$--manifolds with connected boundary and diagrams describing these trisected $4$--manifolds. Such a diagram comes in the form of a compact, oriented surface with boundary together with three tuples of simple closed curves, with possibly fewer curves than the genus of the surface, satisfying a pairwise standardness condition. This should be thought of as the $4$--dimensional analog of a sutured Heegaard diagram for a sutured $3$--manifold. We also give many foundational examples.

Abstract:We study trisections of smooth, compact non-orientable 4-manifolds, and introduce trisections of non-orientable 4-manifolds with boundary. In particular, we prove a non-orientable analogue of a classical theorem of Laudenbach-Po\'enaru. As a consequence, trisection diagrams and Kirby diagrams of closed non-orientable 4-manifolds exist. We discuss how the theory of trisections may be adapted to the setting of non-orientable 4-manifolds with many examples.

Abstract:We show the existence of a $4$-manifold with boundary that admits two non-diffeomorphic minimal genus relative trisections of the same $(g,k;p,b)$-type. To prove this, we introduce a simple operation that produces a trisection diagram of a closed $4$-manifold from a relative trisection diagram.

Abstract:Let S be a -knot which is the connected sum of a 2-knot with normal Euler number 0 and an unknotted -knot with normal Euler number in a closed 4-manifold X with trisection . Then, we show that the trisection of X obtained by the trivial gluing of relative trisections of and is diffeomorphic to a stabilization of . It should be noted that this result is not obvious since boundary-stabilizations introduced by Kim and Miller are used to construct a relative trisection of . As a corollary, if and was the genus 0 trisection of , the resulting trisection is diffeomorphic to a stabilization of the genus 0 trisection of . This result is related to the conjecture that is a 4-dimensional analogue of Waldhausen's theorem on Heegaard splittings.

Abstract:Trisections of closed 4-manifolds, first defined and studied by Gay and Kirby, have proved to be a useful tool in the systematic analysis of 4-manifolds via handlebodies. Subsequent work of Abrams, Gay, and Kirby established a connection with the algebraic notion of a group trisection, which strikingly defines a one-to-one correspondence. We generalize the notion of a group trisection to the non-closed case by defining and studying relative group trisections. We establish an analogous one-to-one correspondence between relative trisections and relative group trisections up to equivalence. The key lemma in the construction may be of independent interest, as it generalizes the classical fact that there is a unique handlebody extension of a surface realizing a given surjection. Moreover, we establish a functorial relationship between relative trisections of manifolds and groups, extending work of Klug in the closed case.

Combed Trisection Diagrams and Non-Semisimple 4-Manifold Invariants

Abstract:Given a triple $H$ of (possibly non-semisimple) Hopf algebras equipped with pairings satisfying a set of properties, we describe a construction of an associated smooth, scalar invariant $\tau_H(X,\pi)$ of a simply connected, compact, oriented $4$-manifold $X$ and an open book $\pi$ on its boundary. This invariant generalizes an earlier semisimple version and is calculated using a trisection diagram $T$ for $X$ and a certain type of combing of the trisection surface. We explain a general calculation of this invariant for a family of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary called Stein nuclei, introduced by Yasui. After investigating many low-dimensional Hopf algebras up to dimension 11, we have not been able to find non-semisimple Hopf triples that satisfy the criteria for our invariant. Nonetheless, appropriate Hopf triples may exist outside the scope of our explorations.

Bridge trisections of knotted surfaces in $S^4$

Abstract:We introduce bridge trisections of knotted surfaces in the four-sphere. This description is inspired by the work of Gay and Kirby on trisections of four-manifolds and extends the classical concept of bridge splittings of links in the three-sphere to four dimensions. We prove that every knotted surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection (a decomposition into three simple pieces) and that any two bridge trisections for a fixed surface are related by a sequence of stabilizations and destabilizations. We also introduce a corresponding diagrammatic representation of knotted surfaces and describe a set of moves that suffice to pass between two diagrams for the same surface. Using these decompositions, we define a new complexity measure: the bridge number of a knotted surface. In addition, we classify bridge trisections with low complexity, we relate bridge trisections to the fundamental groups of knotted surface complements, and we prove that there exist knotted surfaces with arbitrarily large bridge number.

Pseudo-trisections of four-manifolds with boundary

Abstract:We introduce the concept of pseudo-trisections of smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds with boundary. The main feature of pseudo-trisections is that they have lower complexity than relative trisections for given 4-manifolds. We prove existence and uniqueness of pseudo-trisections, and further establish a one-to-one correspondence between pseudo-trisections and their diagrammatic representations. We next introduce the concept of pseudo-bridge trisections of neatly embedded surfaces in smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds. We develop a diagrammatic theory of pseudo-bridge trisections and provide examples of computations of invariants of neatly embedded surfaces in 4-manifolds using said diagrams.

Abstract:These notes summarize and expand on a mini-course given at CIRM in February 2018 as part of Winter Braids VIII. We somewhat obsessively develop the slogan `Trisections are to 4-manifolds as Heegaard splittings are to 3-manifolds', focusing on and clarifying the distinction between three ways of thinking of things: the basic definitions as decompositions of manifolds, the Morse theoretic perspective and descriptions in terms of diagrams. We also lay out these themes in two important relative settings: 4-manifolds with boundary and 4-manifolds with embedded 2-dimensional submanifolds.

Abstract:For an oriented $4$--dimensional fiber bundle over $S^{1}$, we build a relative trisection from a sutured Heegaard splitting of the fiber. We provide an algorithm to explicitly construct the associated relative trisection diagram, from a sutured Heegaard diagram of the fiber. As an application, we glue our relative trisection diagrams with existing diagrams to recover trisected closed fiber bundles over $S^1$ and trisected spun manifolds, and to provide trisections for $4$--dimensional open-books.

Abstract:Gay and Meier asked if a trisection diagram for the Gluck twist on a spun or twist-spun 2-knot in $S^4$ obtained by a certain method is standard. In this paper, we show that the trisection diagram for the Gluck twist on the spun $(p+1,p)$-torus knot is standard, where $p$ is any integer greater than or equal to 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the notion of double Satake diagrams for compact symmetric triads. In terms of this notion, we give an alternative proof for the classification theorem for compact symmetric triads, which was originally given by Toshihiko Matsuki. Secondly, we introduce the notion of canonical forms for compact symmetric triads, and prove the existence of canonical forms for compact simple symmetric triads. We also give some properties for canonical forms.

Abstract:We show how to encode a Weinstein 4-manifold using a multisection diagram with divides, which is a sequence of cut systems on a surface, together with a separating collection of curves. We give two algorithms to construct a multisection diagram with divides of a given Weinstein manifold, one starting with a Kirby-Weinstein handle decomposition and one starting with a positive, allowable Lefschetz fibration (PALF). Through the connections with PALFs, we define a monodromy of a multisection and show how to symplectically carry out monodromy substitution on multisections with divides.

Abstract:Generalizing Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds and trisections of 4-manifolds, we consider multisections of higher-dimensional smooth (or PL) closed orientable manifolds, namely decompositions into 1-handlebodies whose subcollections intersect along 1-handlebodies, with global intersection a closed surface. With such a multisection one can associate a diagram. We prove that a multisection diagram determines a unique PL-manifold in all dimensions and a unique smooth manifold up to dimension 6. Further, we show that any closed orientable smooth 5-manifold admits a multisection.

Abstract:We call a non-trivial homology sphere a Kirby-Ramanujam sphere if it bounds both a homology plane and a Mazur or Poénaru manifold. In 1980, Kirby found the first example by proving that the boundary of the Ramanujam surface bounds a Mazur manifold and it has remained a single example since then. By tracing their initial step, we provide the first additional examples and we present three infinite families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres. Also, we show that one of our families of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres is diffeomorphic to the splice of two certain families of Brieskorn spheres. Since this family of Kirby-Ramanujam spheres bound contractible $4$-manifolds, they lie in the class of the trivial element in the homology cobordism group; however, both splice components are separately linearly independent in that group.

Abstract:We provide an algorithm for constructing a Kirby diagram of a 4-dimensional open book given a Heegaard diagram of the page. As an application, we show that an open book constructed with arbitrary page and trivial monodromy is diffeomorphic to an open book constructed with a punctured handlebody as page and a composition of torus twists and sphere twists as monodromy.

Abstract:We introduce an inseparable version of Kummer surfaces. It is defined as a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2 with 16 smooth rational curves forming a certain configuration and satisfying a suitable divisibility condition. The main result is that such a surface admits an inseparable double covering by a non-normal surface $A$ that is similar to abelian surfaces in two aspects: its numerical invariants are the same as abelian surfaces, and its smooth locus admits an abelian group structure.
