Abstract:We generalize methods, developed by S. Ghilardi, and apply them to a subsystem J$_2$ of bimodal provability logic GLB. We describe projective formulas in J$_2$ in terms of Kripke semantics and prove that logic J$_2$ has finitary unification type. As an application, we show that admissibility problem for J$_2$ is decidable.

Abstract:We show that the polymodal provability logic GLP, in a language with at least two modalities and one variable, has nullary unification type. More specifically, we show that the formula [1]p does not have maximal unifiers, and exhibit an infinite complete set of unifiers for it. Further, we discuss the algorithmic problem of whether a given formula is unifiable in GLP and remark that this problem has a positive solution. Finally, we state the arithmetical analogues of the unification and admissibility problems for GLP and formulate a number of open questions.

Abstract:The logic iGLC is the intuitionistic version of Löb's Logic plus the completeness principle A → □ A . In this paper, we prove an arithmetical completeness theorems for iGLC for theories equipped with two provability predicates □ and △ that prove the schemes A → △ A and □ △ S → □ S for S ∈ Σ 1 . We provide two salient instances of the theorem. In the first, □ is fast provability and △ is ordinary provability and, in the second, □ is ordinary provability and △ is slow provability. Using the second instance, we reprove a theorem previously obtained by Mohammad Ardeshir and Mojtaba Mojtahedi [1] determining the Σ 1 -provability logic of Heyting Arithmetic.

Abstract:We study unification and admissibility for an infinite class of modal logics. Conditions superimposed to these logics are to be decidable, Kripke complete, and generated by the classes of rooted frames possessing the greatest clusters of states (in particular, these logics extend modal logic S4.2). Given such logic and each formula unifiable in , we construct a unifier for in , where verifies admissibility in of arbitrary inference rules with a switched-modality conclusions (i.e., solves the admissibility problem for such rules).

Unifying Sequent Systems for Gödel-Löb Provability Logic via Syntactic Transformations

Abstract:We demonstrate the inter-translatability of proofs between the most prominent sequent-based formalisms for Gödel-Löb provability logic. In particular, we consider Sambin and Valentini's sequent system GLseq, Shamkanov's non-wellfounded and cyclic sequent systems GL$\infty$ and GLcirc, Poggiolesi's tree-hypersequent system CSGL, and Negri's labeled sequent system G3GL. Shamkanov showed how to transform proofs between GLseq, GL$\infty$, and GLcirc, and Goré and Ramanayake showed how to transform proofs between CSGL and G3GL, however, the exact nature of proof transformations between the former three systems and the latter two systems has remained an open problem. We solve this open problem by showing how to restructure tree-hypersequent proofs into an end-active form and introduce a novel linearization technique that transforms such proofs into linear nested sequent proofs. As a result, we obtain a new proof-theoretic tool for extracting linear nested sequent systems from tree-hypersequent systems, which yields the first cut-free linear nested sequent calculus LNGL for Gödel-Löb provability logic. We show how to transform proofs in LNGL into a certain normal form, where proofs repeat in stages of modal and local rule applications, and which are translatable into GLseq and G3GL proofs. These new syntactic transformations, together with those mentioned above, establish full proof-theoretic correspondences between GLseq, GL$\infty$, GLcirc, CSGL, G3GL, and LNGL while also giving (to the best of the author's knowledge) the first constructive proof mappings between structural (viz. labeled, tree-hypersequent, and linear nested sequent) systems and a cyclic sequent system.

Abstract:We introduce the logics GLPΛ, a generalization of Japaridze’s polymodal provability logic GLPω where Λ is any linearly ordered set representing a hierarchy of provability operators of increasing strength. We shall provide a reduction of these logics to GLPω yielding among other things a finitary proof of the normal form theorem for the variable-free fragment of GLPΛ and the decidability of GLPΛ for recursive orderings Λ. Further, we give a restricted axiomatization of the variable-free fragment of GLPΛ.

Abstract:We develop a method to recognize admissibility of $\Pi_{2}$-rules, relating this problem to a specific instance of the unification problem with linear constants restriction, called here "unification with simple variable restriction". It is shown that for logical systems enjoying an appropriate algebraic semantics and a finite approximation of left uniform interpolation, this unification with simple variable restriction can be reduced to standard unification. As a corollary, we obtain the decidability of admissibility of $\Pi_{2}$-rules for many logical systems.

Defining Logical Systems via Algebraic Constraints on Proofs

Abstract:We present a comprehensive programme analysing the decomposition of proof systems for non-classical logics into proof systems for other logics, especially classical logic, using an algebra of constraints. That is, one recovers a proof system for a target logic by enriching a proof system for another, typically simpler, logic with an algebra of constraints that act as correctness conditions on the latter to capture the former; for example, one may use Boolean algebra to give constraints in a sequent calculus for classical propositional logic to produce a sequent calculus for intuitionistic propositional logic. The idea behind such forms of reduction is to obtain a tool for uniform and modular treatment of proof theory and provide a bridge between semantics logics and their proof theory. The article discusses the theoretical background of the project and provides several illustrations of its work in the field of intuitionistic and modal logics. The results include the following: a uniform treatment of modular and cut-free proof systems for a large class of propositional logics; a general criterion for a novel approach to soundness and completeness of a logic with respect to a model-theoretic semantics; and, a case study deriving a model-theoretic semantics from a proof-theoretic specification of a logic.

Abstract:We consider well-known provability logic GLP. We prove that the GLP-provability problem for variable-free polymodal formulas is PSPACE-complete. For a number n, let L^n_0 denote the class of all polymodal variable-free formulas without modalities <n>, <n+1>,... . We show that, for every number n, the GLP-provability problem for formulas from L^n_0 is in PTIME.

Abstract:Provability logic GLP is well-known to be incomplete w.r.t. Kripke semantics. A natural topological semantics of GLP interprets modalities as derivative operators of a polytopological space. Such spaces are called GLP-spaces whenever they satisfy all the axioms of GLP. We develop some constructions to build nontrivial GLP-spaces and show that GLP is complete w.r.t. the class of all GLP-spaces.

Abstract:Provability logics are modal or polymodal systems designed for modeling the behavior of Gödel’s provability predicate and its natural extensions. If Λ is any ordinal, the Gödel-Löb calculus GLPΛ contains one modality [λ] for each λ < Λ, representing provability predicates of increasing strength. GLPω has no non-trivial Kripke frames, but it is sound and complete for its topological semantics, as was shown by Icard for the variable-free fragment and more recently by Beklemishev and Gabelaia for the full logic. In this paper we generalize Beklemishev and Gabelaia’s result to GLPΛ for countable Λ. We also introduce provability ambiances, which are topological models where valuations of formulas are restricted. With this we show completeness of GLPΛ for the class of provability ambiances based on Icard polytopologies.

Abstract:We design an expansion of Belnap--Dunn logic with belief and plausibility functions that allow non-trivial reasoning with inconsistent and incomplete probabilistic information. We also formalise reasoning with non-standard probabilities and belief functions in two ways. First, using a calculus of linear inequalities, akin to the one presented in~\cite{FaginHalpernMegiddo1990}. Second, as a two-layered modal logic wherein reasoning with evidence (the outer layer) utilises paraconsistent expansions of Łukasiewicz logic. The second approach is inspired by~\cite{BaldiCintulaNoguera2020}. We prove completeness for both kinds of calculi and show their equivalence by establishing faithful translations in both directions.

Abstract:Proof nets for MLL (unit-free Multiplicative Linear Logic) are concise graphical representations of proofs which are canonical in the sense that they abstract away syntactic redundancy such as the order of non-interacting rules. We argue that Girard's extension to MLL1 (first-order MLL) fails to be canonical because of redundant existential witnesses, and present canonical MLL1 proof nets called unification nets without them. For example, while there are infinitely many cut-free Girard nets $\forall x Px \vdash \exists xPx$, one per arbitrary choice of witness for $\exists x$, there is a unique cut-free unification net, with no specified witness. Redundant existential witnesses cause Girard's MLL1 nets to suffer from severe complexity issues: (1) cut elimination is non-local and exponential-time (and -space), and (2) some sequents require exponentially large cut-free Girard nets. Unification nets solve both problems: (1) cut elimination is local and linear-time, and (2) cut-free unification nets grow linearly with the size of the sequent. Since some unification nets are exponentially smaller than corresponding Girard nets and sequent proofs, technical delicacy is required to ensure correctness is polynomial-time (quadratic). These results extend beyond MLL1 via a broader methodological insight: for canonical quantifiers, the standard parallel/sequential dichotomy of proof nets fails; an implicit/explicit witness dichotomy is also needed. Work in progress extends unification nets to additives and uses them to extend combinatorial proofs [Proofs without syntax, Annals of Mathematics, 2006] to classical first-order logic.

Mechanising Gödel-Löb provability logic in HOL Light

Abstract:We introduce our implementation in HOL Light of the metatheory for Gödel-Löb provability logic (GL), covering soundness and completeness w.r.t. possible world semantics and featuring a prototype of a theorem prover for GL itself. The strategy we develop here to formalise the modal completeness proof overcomes the technical difficulty due to the non-compactness of GL and is an adaptation -- according to the formal language and tools at hand -- of the proof given in George Boolos' 1995 monograph. Our theorem prover for GL relies then on this formalisation, is implemented as a tactic of HOL Light that mimics the proof search in the labelled sequent calculus G3KGL, and works as a decision algorithm for the provability logic: if the algorithm positively terminates, the tactic succeeds in producing a HOL Light theorem stating that the input formula is a theorem of GL; if the algorithm negatively terminates, the tactic extracts a model falsifying the input formula. We discuss our code for the formal proof of modal completeness and the design of our proof search algorithm. Furthermore, we propose some examples of the latter's interactive and automated use.

Abstract:We classify intermediate logics according to their unification types. There are exactly two minimal intermediate logics with hereditary finitary unification: the least logic with hereditary unitary unification and the least logic with hereditary projective proximity (a notion close to projective approximation of Ghilardi [18] , [19] ), see Figure 4. They are locally tabular and are union splittings in the lattice Ext INT . There are exactly four maximal intermediate logics with nullary unification (see Figure 21) and they are tabular. Any intermediate logic with neither hereditary unitary unification nor with hereditary projective proximity is included in one of the four logics. There are logics with finitary/unitary (but not hereditary finitary) unification scattered among the majority of those with nullary unification, see Figure 23. Our main tools are the characterization of locally tabular logics with finitary (or unitary) unification, by their Kripke models [13] , [14] and splittings.

Abstract:We study interpolation properties for Shavrukov's bimodal logic $\mathbf{GR}$ of usual and Rosser provability predicates. For this purpose, we introduce a new sublogic $\mathbf{GR}^\circ$ of $\mathbf{GR}$ and its relational semantics. Based on our new semantics, we prove that $\mathbf{GR}^\circ$ and $\mathbf{GR}$ enjoy Lyndon interpolation property and uniform interpolation property.

An $ω$-rule for the logic of provability and its models

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a proof system $\mathsf{NGL}$ for the logic $\mathbf{GL}$ of provability, which is equipped with an $\omega$-rule. We show the three classes of transitive Kripke frames, the class which strongly validates the $\omega$-rule, the class which weakly validates the $\omega$-rule, and the class which is defined by the Löb formula, are mutually different, while all of them characterize $\mathbf{GL}$. This gives an example of a proof system $P$ and a class $C$ of Kripke frames such that $P$ is sound with respect to $C$ but the soundness cannot be proved by simple induction on the height of the derivations in $P$. We also show Kripke completeness of $\mathsf{NGL}$ in an algebraic manner. As a corollary, we show that the class of modal algebras which is defined by equations $\Box x\leq\Box\Box x$ and $\bigwedge_{n\in\omega}\Diamond^{n}1=0$ is not a variety.

Simple tableaux for two expansions of Gödel modal logic

Abstract:This paper considers two logics. The first one, $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$, is an expansion of the Gödel modal logic $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}$ with the involutive negation $\sim_\mathsf{i}$ defined as $v({\sim_\mathsf{i}}\phi,w)=1-v(\phi,w)$. The second one, $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{bl}$, is the expansion of $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$ with the bi-lattice connectives and modalities. We explore their semantical properties w.r.t. the standard semantics on $[0,1]$-valued Kripke frames and define a unified tableaux calculus that allows for the explicit countermodel construction. For this, we use an alternative semantics with the finite model property. Using the tableaux calculus, we construct a decision algorithm and show that satisfiability and validity in $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$ and $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{bl}$ are PSpace-complete.

Abstract:Relational descriptions have been used in formalizing diverse computational notions, including, for example, operational semantics, typing, and acceptance by non-deterministic machines. We therefore propose a (restricted) logical theory over relations as a language for specifying such notions. Our specification logic is further characterized by an ability to explicitly treat binding in object languages. Once such a logic is fixed, a natural next question is how we might prove theorems about specifications written in it. We propose to use a second logic, called a reasoning logic, for this purpose. A satisfactory reasoning logic should be able to completely encode the specification logic. Associated with the specification logic are various notions of binding: for quantifiers within formulas, for eigenvariables within sequents, and for abstractions within terms. To provide a natural treatment of these aspects, the reasoning logic must encode binding structures as well as their associated notions of scope, free and bound variables, and capture-avoiding substitution. Further, to support arguments about provability, the reasoning logic should possess strong mechanisms for constructing proofs by induction and co-induction. We provide these capabilities here by using a logic called G which represents relations over lambda-terms via definitions of atomic judgments, contains inference rules for induction and co-induction, and includes a special generic quantifier. We show how provability in the specification logic can be transparently encoded in G. We also describe an interactive theorem prover called Abella that implements G and this two-level logic approach and we present several examples that demonstrate the efficacy of Abella in reasoning about computations.

Graphical Proof Theory I: Sequent Systems on Undirected Graphs

Abstract:In this paper we explore the design of sequent calculi operating on graphs. For this purpose, we introduce a set of logical connectives allowing us to extend the correspondence between cographs and classical propositional formulas to any graph. We then provide sequent calculi operating on these formulas, we prove cut-elimination and that formula encoding the same graph are logically equivalent. We show that these systems provide conservative extensions of multiplicative linear logic (with and without mix) and classical propositional logic. We conclude by showing that one of these systems is equivalent to the graphical logic GS defined via a system of context-free graph rewiring rules, therefore providing an alternative proof of analyticity for this logic over graphs.

Abstract:We generalize Kracht's theory of internal describability from classical modal logic to the family of all logics canonically associated with varieties of normal lattice expansions (LE algebras). We work in the purely algebraic setting of perfect LEs; the formulas playing the role of Kracht's formulas in this generalized setting pertain to a first order language whose atoms are special inequalities between terms of perfect algebras. Via duality, formulas in this language can be equivalently translated into first order conditions in the frame correspondence languages of several types of relational semantics for LE-logics.
