Abstract:We study the problem how to draw a planar graph crossing-free such that every vertex is incident to an angle greater than π. In general a plane straight-line drawing cannot guarantee this property. We present algorithms which construct such drawings with either tangent-continuous biarcs or quadratic Bézier curves (parabolic arcs), even if the positions of the vertices are predefined by a given plane straight-line drawing of the graph. Moreover, the graph can be drawn with circular arcs if the vertices can be placed arbitrarily. The topic is related to non-crossing drawings of multigraphs and vertex labeling.

Fan-crossing free graphs and their relationship to other beyond-planar graphs

Abstract:A graph is fan-crossing free if it has a drawing in the plane so that each edge is crossed by independent edges, that is the crossing edges have distinct vertices. On the other hand, it is fan-crossing if the crossing edges have a common vertex, so that they form a fan. Both are prominent examples for beyond-planar graphs. Further well-known beyond-planar classes are the k-planar, k-gap-planar, quasi-planar, and right angle crossing graphs.We use the subdivision, node-to-circle expansion and path-addition operations to distinguish all these graph classes. In particular, we show that the 2-subdivision and the node-to-circle expansion of any graph is fan-crossing free, which does not hold for fan-crossing and k-(gap)-planar graphs, respectively. Thereby, we obtain graphs that are fan-crossing free and neither fan-crossing nor k-(gap)-planar.Finally, we show that some graphs have a unique fan-crossing free embedding, that there are thinned maximal fan-crossing free graphs, and that the recognition problem for fan-crossing free graphs is NP-complete.

Abstract:A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a subset $S$ of its vertices such that each vertex of $G$ not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. A face-hitting set of a plane graph $G$ is a set $T$ of vertices in $G$ such that every face of $G$ contains at least one vertex of $T$. We show that the vertex-set of every plane (multi-)graph without isolated vertices, self-loops or $2$-faces can be partitioned into two disjoint sets so that both the sets are dominating and face-hitting. We also show that all the three assumptions above are necessary for the conclusion.

Abstract:We consider two types of geometric graphs on point sets on the plane based on a plane set C: one obtained by translates of C, another by positively scaled translates (homothets) of C. For compact and convex C, graphs defined by scaled translates of C, i.e., Delaunay graphs based on C, are known to be plane graphs. We show that as long as C is convex, both types of graphs are plane graphs.

Upward Pointset Embeddings of Planar st-Graphs

Abstract:We study upward pointset embeddings (UPSEs) of planar $st$-graphs. Let $G$ be a planar $st$-graph and let $S \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a pointset with $|S|= |V(G)|$. An UPSE of $G$ on $S$ is an upward planar straight-line drawing of $G$ that maps the vertices of $G$ to the points of $S$. We consider both the problem of testing the existence of an UPSE of $G$ on $S$ (UPSE Testing) and the problem of enumerating all UPSEs of $G$ on $S$. We prove that UPSE Testing is NP-complete even for $st$-graphs that consist of a set of directed $st$-paths sharing only $s$ and $t$. On the other hand, for $n$-vertex planar $st$-graphs whose maximum $st$-cutset has size $k$, we prove that it is possible to solve UPSE Testing in $O(n^{4k})$ time with $O(n^{3k})$ space, and to enumerate all UPSEs of $G$ on $S$ with $O(n)$ worst-case delay, using $O(k n^{4k} \log n)$ space, after $O(k n^{4k} \log n)$ set-up time. Moreover, for an $n$-vertex $st$-graph whose underlying graph is a cycle, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an UPSE on a given poinset, which can be tested in $O(n \log n)$ time. Related to this result, we give an algorithm that, for a set $S$ of $n$ points, enumerates all the non-crossing monotone Hamiltonian cycles on $S$ with $O(n)$ worst-case delay, using $O(n^2)$ space, after $O(n^2)$ set-up time.

Abstract:Graph drawing beyond planarity is a research area that has received an increasing attention in the last twenty years, driven by the necessity to mitigate the visual complexity inherent in geometric representations of non-planar graphs. This research area stems from the study of graph layouts with forbidden crossing configurations, a well-established subject in geometric and topological graph theory. In this context, the contribution of this paper is as follows: 1) We introduce a new hierarchy of graph families, called -real face graphs; for any integer , a graph G is a -real face graph if it admits a drawing in the plane such that the boundary of each face (formed by vertices, crossings, and edges) contains at least k vertices of G (" " stands for k or more); 2) We give tight upper bounds on the edge density of -real face graphs, namely we prove that n-vertex -real face and -real face graphs have at most and edges, respectively. Furthermore, in a constrained scenario in which all vertices must lie on the boundary of the external face, -real face and -real face graphs have at most and edges, respectively; 3) We characterize the complete graphs that admit a -real face drawing or an outer -real face drawing for any . We also provide a clear picture for the majority of complete bipartite graphs; and 4) We establish relationships between -real face graphs and other prominent beyond-planar graph families; notably, we show that for any , the class of -real face graphs is not included in any family of beyond-planar graphs with hereditary property.

Abstract:Modern methods of graph theory describe a graph up to isomorphism, which makes it difficult to create mathematical models for visualizing graph drawings on a plane. The topological drawing of the planar part of a graph allows representing the planarization process by algebraic methods, without making any geometric constructions on the plane. Constructing a rotation of graph vertices solves two most important problems of graph theory simultaneously: the problem of testing a graph for planarity and the problem of constructing a topological drawing of a planar graph. It is shown that the problem of constructing a drawing of a non-planar graph can be reduced to the problem of constructing a drawing of a planar graph, taking into account the introduction of additional vertices characterizing the intersection of edges. Naturally, the development of such a mathematical structure will make it possible to solve the following important problems of graph theory: testing the planarity of a graph, identifying the largest planar subgraph of a graph, determining the thickness of a graph, obtaining a graph with a minimum number of intersections, etc.

Separable Drawings: Extendability and Crossing-Free Hamiltonian Cycles

Abstract:Generalizing pseudospherical drawings, we introduce a new class of simple drawings, which we call separable drawings. In a separable drawing, every edge can be closed to a simple curve that intersects each other edge at most once. Curves of different edges might interact arbitrarily. Most notably, we show that (1) every separable drawing of any graph on $n$ vertices in the plane can be extended to a simple drawing of the complete graph $K_{n}$, (2) every separable drawing of $K_{n}$ contains a crossing-free Hamiltonian cycle and is plane Hamiltonian connected, and (3) every generalized convex drawing and every 2-page book drawing is separable. Further, the class of separable drawings is a proper superclass of the union of generalized convex and 2-page book drawings. Hence, our results on plane Hamiltonicity extend recent work on generalized convex drawings by Bergold et al. (SoCG 2024).

Despite work on these topics going back to the mid 1990s, there is no survey, or a part of a survey for this area of research. In this paper we review and categorize over 60 relevant papers and analyze them by geometry, (e.g., spherical, hyperbolic, torus), by contribution (e.g., technique, evaluation, proof, application), and by graph class (e.g., tree, planar, complex).

Abstract:A graph $G$ is nonseparating projective planar if $G$ has a projective planar embedding without a nonsplit link. Nonseparating projective planar graphs are closed under taking minors and are a superclass of projective outerplanar graphs. We partially characterize the minor-minimal separating projective planar graphs by proving that given a minor-minimal nonouter-projective-planar graph $G$, either $G$ is minor-minimal separating projective planar or $G \dot\cup K_{1}$ is minor-minimal weakly separating projective planar, a necessary condition for $G$ to be separating projective planar. One way to generalize separating projective planar graphs is to consider type I 3-links consisting of two cycles and a pair of vertices. A graph is intrinsically projective planar type I 3-linked (IPPI3L) if its every projective planar embedding contains a nonsplit type I 3-link. We partially characterize minor-minimal IPPI3L graphs by classifying all minor-minimal IPPI3L graphs with three or more components, and finding many others with fewer components.

Computing Subset Vertex Covers in $H$-Free Graphs

Abstract:We consider a natural generalization of Vertex Cover: the Subset Vertex Cover problem, which is to decide for a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $T \subseteq V$ and integer $k$, if $V$ has a subset $S$ of size at most $k$, such that $S$ contains at least one end-vertex of every edge incident to a vertex of $T$. A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. We solve two open problems from the literature by proving that Subset Vertex Cover is NP-complete on subcubic (claw,diamond)-free planar graphs and on $2$-unipolar graphs, a subclass of $2P_3$-free weakly chordal graphs. Our results show for the first time that Subset Vertex Cover is computationally harder than Vertex Cover (under P $\neq$ NP). We also prove new polynomial time results. We first give a dichotomy on graphs where $G[T]$ is $H$-free. Namely, we show that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable on graphs $G$, for which $G[T]$ is $H$-free, if $H = sP_1 + tP_2$ and NP-complete otherwise. Moreover, we prove that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1 + P_2 + P_3)$-free graphs and bounded mim-width graphs. By combining our new results with known results we obtain a partial complexity classification for Subset Vertex Cover on $H$-free graphs.

Linear Size Universal Point Sets for Classes of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A finite set $P$ of points in the plane is $n$-universal with respect to a class $\mathcal{C}$ of planar graphs if every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{C}$ admits a crossing-free straight-line drawing with vertices at points of $P$. For the class of all planar graphs the best known upper bound on the size of a universal point set is quadratic and the best known lower bound is linear in $n$. Some classes of planar graphs are known to admit universal point sets of near linear size, however, there are no truly linear bounds for interesting classes beyond outerplanar graphs. In this paper, we show that there is a universal point set of size $2n-2$ for the class of bipartite planar graphs with $n$ vertices. The same point set is also universal for the class of $n$-vertex planar graphs of maximum degree $3$. The point set used for the results is what we call an exploding double chain, and we prove that this point set allows planar straight-line embeddings of many more planar graphs, namely of all subgraphs of planar graphs admitting a one-sided Hamiltonian cycle. The result for bipartite graphs also implies that every $n$-vertex plane graph has a $1$-bend drawing all whose bends and vertices are contained in a specific point set of size $4n-6$, this improves a bound of $6n-10$ for the same problem by Löffler and Tóth.

Untangling Graphs on Surfaces

Abstract:Consider a graph drawn on a surface (for example, the plane minus a finite set of obstacle points), possibly with crossings. We provide an algorithm to decide whether such a drawing can be untangled, namely, if one can slide the vertices and edges of the graph on the surface (avoiding the obstacles) to remove all crossings; in other words, whether the drawing is homotopic to an embedding. While the problem boils down to planarity testing when the surface is the sphere or the disk (or equivalently the plane without any obstacle), the other cases have never been studied before, except when the input graph is a cycle, in an abundant literature in topology and more recently by Despré and Lazarus [SoCG 2017, J. ACM 2019]. Our algorithm runs in O(m + poly(g+b) n log n) time, where g >= 0 and b >= 0 are the genus and the number of boundary components of the input orientable surface S, and n is the size of the input graph drawing, lying on some fixed graph of size m cellularly embedded on S. We use various techniques from two-dimensional computational topology and from the theory of hyperbolic surfaces. Most notably, we introduce reducing triangulations, a novel discrete analog of hyperbolic surfaces in the spirit of systems of quads by Lazarus and Rivaud [FOCS 2012] and Erickson and Whittlesey [SODA 2013], which have the additional benefit that reduced paths are unique and stable upon reversal; they are likely of independent interest. Tailored data structures are needed to achieve certain homotopy tests efficiently on these triangulations. As a key subroutine, we rely on an algorithm to test the weak simplicity of a graph drawn on a surface by Akitaya, Fulek, and Tóth [SODA 2018, TALG 2019].

Further Connectivity Results on Plane Spanning Path Reconfiguration

Abstract:Given a finite set $ S $ of points, we consider the following reconfiguration graph. The vertices are the plane spanning paths of $ S $ and there is an edge between two vertices if the two corresponding paths differ by two edges (one removed, one added). Since 2007, this graph is conjectured to be connected but no proof has been found. In this paper, we prove several results to support the conjecture. Mainly, we show that if all but one point of $ S $ are in convex position, then the graph is connected with diameter at most $ 2 | S | $ and that for $ | S | \geq 3 $ every connected component has at least $ 3 $ vertices.

Using SAT to study plane Hamiltonian substructures in simple drawings

Abstract:In 1988 Rafla conjectured that every simple drawing of a complete graph $K_n$ contains a plane, i.e., non-crossing, Hamiltonian cycle. The conjecture is far from being resolved. The lower bounds for plane paths and plane matchings have recently been raised to $(\log n)^{1-o(1)}$ and $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$, respectively. We develop a SAT framework which allows the study of simple drawings of $K_n$. Based on the computational data we conjecture that every simple drawing of $K_n$ contains a plane Hamiltonian subgraph with $2n-3$ edges. We prove this strengthening of Rafla's conjecture for convex drawings, a rich subclass of simple drawings. Our computer experiments also led to other new challenging conjectures regarding plane substructures in simple drawings of complete graphs.

Abstract:A visualized graph is a powerful tool for data analysis and synthesis tasks. In this case, the task of visualization constitutes not only in displaying vertices and edges according to the graph representation, but also in ensuring that the result is visually simple and comprehensible for a human. Thus, the visualization process involves solving several problems, one of which is the problem of constructing a topological drawing of a planar part of a non-planar graph with a minimum number of removed edges. In this manuscript, we consider a mathematical model for representing the topological drawing of a graph, which is based on methods of the theory of vertex rotation with the induction of simple cycles that satisfy the Mac Lane planarity criterion. It is shown that the topological drawing of a non-planar graph can be constructed on the basis of a selected planar part of the graph. The topological model of a graph drawing allows us to reduce the brute-force enumeration problem of identifying a plane graph to a discrete optimization problem - searching for a subset of the set of isometric cycles of the graph that satisfy the zero value of the Mac Lane's functional. To isolate the planar part of the graph, a new computational method has been developed based on linear algebra and the algebra of structural numbers. The proposed method has polynomial computational complexity.

Free Descriptions of Convex Sets

Abstract:Convex sets arising in a variety of applications are well-defined for every relevant dimension. Examples include the simplex and the spectraplex that correspond to probability distributions and to quantum states; combinatorial polytopes and their relaxations such as the cut polytope and the elliptope in integer programming; and unit balls of regularizers such as the $\ell_p$ and Schatten norms in inverse problems. Moreover, these sets are often specified using conic descriptions that can be obviously instantiated in any dimension. We develop a systematic framework to study such free descriptions of convex sets. We show that free descriptions arise from a recently-identified phenomenon in algebraic topology called representation stability, which relates invariants across dimensions in a sequence of group representations. Our framework yields structural results for free descriptions pertaining to the relations between the sets they describe across dimensions, extendability of a single set in a given dimension to a freely-described sequence, and continuous limits of such sequences. We also develop a procedure to obtain parametric families of freely-described convex sets whose structure is adapted to a given application; illustrations are provided via examples that arise in the literature as well as new families that are derived using our procedure. We demonstrate the utility of our framework in two contexts. First, we develop an algorithm for a free analog of the convex regression problem, where a convex function is fit to input-output data; by searching over our parametric families, we can fit a function to low-dimensional inputs and extend it to any other dimension. Second, we prove that many sequences of symmetric conic programs can be solved in constant time, which unifies and strengthens several results in the literature.
