Abstract:We study the nonequilibrium work in a pedagogical model of relativistic ideal gas. We obtain the exact work distribution and verify Jarzynski's equality. In the nonrelativistic limit, our results recover the nonrelativistic results of Lua and Grosberg [ J. Phys. Chem. B 109 , 6805 (2005)]. We also find that, unlike the nonrelativistic case, the work distribution no longer has zeros and the number of collisions in this relativistic gas model is finite. Abstract:Recent work by Teifel and Mahler [Eur. Phys. J. B 75, 275 (2010)] raises legitimate concerns regarding the validity of quantum nonequilibrium work relations in processes involving moving hard walls. We study this issue in the context of the rapidly expanding one-dimensional quantum piston. Utilizing exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we find that the evolution of the wave function can be decomposed into static and dynamic components, which have simple semiclassical interpretations in terms of particle-piston collisions. We show that nonequilibrium work relations remain valid at any finite piston speed, provided both components are included, and we study explicitly the work distribution for this model system.

Abstract:We revisit the paradigm of an ideal gas under isothermal conditions. A moving piston performs work on an ideal gas in a container that is strongly coupled to a heat reservoir. The thermal coupling is modelled by stochastic scattering at the boundaries. In contrast to recent studies of an adiabatic ideal gas with a piston [R.C. Lua and A.Y. Grosberg, \textit{J. Phys. Chem. B} 109, 6805 (2005); I. Bena et al., \textit{Europhys. Lett.} 71, 879 (2005)], container and piston stay in contact with the heat bath during the work process. Under this condition the heat reservoir as well as the system depend on the work parameter $\lambda$ and microscopic reversibility is broken for a moving piston. Our model is thus not included in the class of systems for which the non-equilibrium work theorem has been derived rigorously either by Hamiltonian [C. Jarzynski, \textit{J. Stat. Mech.} P09005 (2004)] or stochastic methods [G.E. Crooks, \textit{J. Stat. Phys.} 90, 1481 (1998)]. Nevertheless the validity of the non-equilibrium work theorem is confirmed both numerically for a wide range of parameter values and analytically in the limit of a very fast moving piston, i.e. in the far non-equilibrium regime.

Abstract:Bridging equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical physics attracts sustained interest. Hallmarks of nonequilibrium systems include a breakdown of detailed balance, and an absence of a priori potential function corresponding to the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution, without which classical equilibrium thermodynamical quantities could not be defined. Here, we construct dynamically the potential function through decomposing the system into a dissipative part and a conservative part, and develop a nonequilibrium theory by defining thermodynamical quantities based on the potential function. Concepts for equilibrium can thus be naturally extended to nonequilibrium steady state. We elucidate this procedure explicitly in a class of time-dependent linear diffusive systems without mathematical ambiguity. We further obtain the exact work distribution for an arbitrary control parameter, and work equalities connecting nonequilibrium steady states. Our results provide a direct generalization on Jarzynski equality and Crooks fluctuation theorem to systems without detailed balance.

Abstract:The fluctuation theorem, where the central quantity is the work distribution, is an important characterization of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In this work, based on the dissipaton-equation-of-motion theory, we develop an exact method to evaluate the work distributions in quantum impurity system-bath mixing processes, in the presence of non-Markovian and strong couplings. Our results not only precisely reproduce the Jarzynski equality and Crooks relation, but also reveal rich information on large deviation. The numerical demonstrations are carried out with a spin-boson model system.

Abstract:We consider the 1-D piston problem for the compressible relativistic full Euler equations when the total variations of the initial data and the piston velocity are both sufficiently small. By using a modified wave front tracking method, we establish the global existence of entropy solutions including a strong rarefaction wave without restriction on the strength. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as t→+∞.

Abstract:The presence of multiplicative noise can alter measurements of forces acting on nanoscopic objects. Taking into account of multiplicative noise, we derive a series of nonequilibrium thermodynamical equalities as generalization of the Jarzynski equality, the detailed fluctuation theorem and the Hatano-Sasa relation. Our result demonstrates that the Jarzynski equality and the detailed fluctuation theorem remains valid only for systems with the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution at the equilibrium state, but the Hatano-Sasa relation is robust with respect to different stochastic interpretations of multiplicative noise.

Abstract:We derive the relativistic kinetic equation and collision kernel for dense gases of spin $0$ particles from quantum field theory based on the Wigner-function formalism. The formalism developed by Degroot can be used as an effective way for density expansion of the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation obtained in the lowest order in density recovers the Boltzmann equation with a nonlocal binary collision term. Keeping this expansion procedure, we derive the triple collision term, which can be seen as a relativistic extension of correspondent works on the transport research about dense gases in the non-relativistic cases. Considering the widespread practicability in different physical systems, the kinetic equation for dense gases we obtain shall be put into good use.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve constructively the piston problem for one-dimensional isentropic Euler equations of modified Chaplygin gas. In solutions, we prove rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of a shock wave separating constant states ahead of the piston when the piston pushed forward into the gas. It is quite different from the results of Chaplygin gas or generalized Chaplygin gas in which a Radon measure solution is constructed to deal with concentration of mass on the piston. When the piston pulled back from the gas, we strictly confirm only the first family rarefaction wave exists in front of the piston and the concentration will never occur. In addition, by studying the limiting behavior, we show that the piston solutions of modified Chaplygin gas equations tend to the piston solutions of generalized or pure Chaplygin gas equations as a single parameter of pressure state function vanishes.

Abstract:A result of great theoretical and experimental interest, Jarzynski equality predicts a free energy change $\Delta F$ of a system at inverse temperature $\beta$ from an ensemble average of non-equilibrium exponential work, i.e., $\langle e^{-\beta W}\rangle =e^{-\beta\Delta F}$. The number of experimental work values needed to reach a given accuracy of $\Delta F$ is determined by the variance of $e^{-\beta W}$, denoted ${\rm var}(e^{-\beta W})$. We discover in this work that ${\rm var}(e^{-\beta W})$ in both harmonic and an-harmonic Hamiltonian systems can systematically diverge in non-adiabatic work protocols, even when the adiabatic protocols do not suffer from such divergence. This divergence may be regarded as a type of dynamically induced phase transition in work fluctuations. For a quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent trapping frequency as a working example, any non-adiabatic work protocol is found to yield a diverging ${\rm var}(e^{-\beta W})$ at sufficiently low temperatures, markedly different from the classical behavior. The divergence of ${\rm var}(e^{-\beta W})$ indicates the too-far-from-equilibrium nature of a non-adiabatic work protocol and makes it compulsory to apply designed control fields to suppress the quantum work fluctuations in order to test Jarzynski equality.

Abstract:Quantum-mechanical particles in a confining potential interfere with each other while undergoing thermodynamic processes far from thermal equilibrium. By evaluating the corresponding transition probabilities between many-particle eigenstates we obtain the quantum work distribution function for identical bosons and fermions, which we compare with the case of distinguishable particles. We find that the quantum work distributions for bosons and fermions significantly differ at low temperatures, while, as expected, at high temperatures the work distributions converge to the classical expression. These findings are illustrated with two analytically solvable examples, namely the time-dependent infinite square well and the parametric harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:Applying the well-known Feynman-Kac formula of inhomogeneous case, an interesting and rigorous mathematical proof of generalized Jarzynski’s equality of inhomogeneous multidimensional diffusion processes is presented, followed by an extension of the second law of thermodynamics. Then, we explain its physical meaning and applications, extending Hummer and Szabo’s work (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 98(7):3658–3661, [ 2001 ]) and Hatano-Sasa equality of steady state thermodynamics (Phys. Rev. Lett. 86:3463–3466, [ 2001 ]) to the general multidimensional case.

Abstract:We extend the well-known static duality [M. Girardeau, J. Math. Phys. 1, 516 (1960)JMAPAQ0022-248810.1063/1.1703687; T. Cheon and T. Shigehara, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2536 (1999)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.82.2536] between one-dimensional (1D) bosons and 1D fermions to the dynamical version. By utilizing this dynamical duality, we find the duality of nonequilibrium work distributions between interacting 1D bosonic (Lieb-Liniger model) and 1D fermionic (Cheon-Shigehara model) systems with dual contact interactions. As a special case, the work distribution of the Tonks-Girardeau gas is identical to that of 1D noninteracting fermionic system even though their momentum distributions are significantly different. In the classical limit, the work distributions of Lieb-Liniger models (Cheon-Shigehara models) with arbitrary coupling strength converge to that of the 1D noninteracting distinguishable particles, although their elementary excitations (quasiparticles) obey different statistics, e.g., the Bose-Einstein, the Fermi-Dirac, and the fractional statistics. We also present numerical results of the work distributions of Lieb-Liniger model with various coupling strengths, which demonstrate the convergence of work distributions in the classical limit.

However the recently established framework of stochastic thermodynamics (ST) fails to apply to this model system due to the embedded singularity in the potential. In this Letter we study the stochastic thermodynamics in a piston system by adopting a novel coordinate transformation technique. Through comparing with the exact solution of a breathing harmonic oscillator, we obtain analytical results of work distribution for an arbitrary protocol in the linear response regime, and verify various predictions of the Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem. When applying to the Brownian Szilardu0027s engine model, we obtain the optimal protocol $lambda_t = lambda_0 2^{t/tau}$ for a given sufficiently long total time $tau$. Our study not only establishes a paradigm for studying ST of the isothermal piston system, but also bridges the long-standing gap in the development of ST.

Abstract:We consider a heavy piston in an infinite cylinder surrounded by ideal gases on both sides. The piston moves under elastic collisions with gas atoms. We assume here that the gases always exert equal pressures on the piston, hence the piston remains at the so called mechanical equilibrium. However, the temperatures and densities of the gases may differ across the piston. In that case some earlier studies by Gruber, Piasecki and others reveal a very slow motion (drift) of the piston in the direction of the hotter gas. At the same time the hotter gas slowly transfers its energy (heat) across the piston to the cooler gas. While the previous studies of this interesting phenomenon were only heuristic or experimental, we provide first rigorous proofs assuming that the velocity distribution of the ideal gas satisfies a certain ``cutoff'' condition.

Abstract:We consider the quantum mechanical generalization of Crooks Fluctuation Theorem and Jarzynski Equality for an open quantum system. The explicit expression for microscopic work for an arbitrary prescribed protocol is obtained, and the relation between quantum Crooks Fluctuation Theorem, quantum Jarzynski Equality and their classical counterparts are clarified. Numerical simulations based on a two-level toy model are used to demonstrate the validity of the quantum version of the two theorems beyond linear response theory regime.

Abstract:It has been established that the inclusive work for classical, Hamiltonian dynamics is equivalent to the two-time energy measurement paradigm in isolated quantum systems. However, a plethora of other notions of quantum work has emerged, and thus the natural question arises whether any other quantum notion can provide motivation for purely classical considerations. In the present analysis, we propose the conditional stochastic work for classical, Hamiltonian dynamics, which is inspired by the one-time measurement approach. This novel notion is built upon the change of expectation value of the energy conditioned on the initial energy surface. As main results we obtain a generalized Jarzynski equality and a sharper maximum work theorem, which account for how non-adiabatic the process is. Our findings are illustrated with the parametric harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:We briefly introduce the quantum Jarzynski and Bochkov-Kuzovlev equalities in isolated quantum Hamiltonian systems, which includes the origin of the equalities, their derivations using a quantum Feynman-Kac formula, the quantum Crooks equality, the evolution equations governing the characteristic functions of the probability density functions for the quantum work, the recent experimental verifications. Some results are given here first time. We particularly emphasize the formally structural consistence between these quantum equalities and their classical counterparts, which shall be useful in understanding the existing equalities and pursuing new fluctuation relations in other complex quantum systems.
