This includes some estimates on the range of the snake, estimates on its occupation measure around its minimum and also a proof of the fact that the snake and the height function of the associated tree have no common increase points.

Abstract:We consider so-called discrete snakes obtained from size-conditioned critical Bienaym\'e-Galton-Watson trees by assigning to each node a random spatial position in such a way that the increments along each edge are i.i.d. When the offspring distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $\alpha \in (1,2]$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the tail distribution of the spatial increments for this spatial tree to converge, in a functional sense, towards the Brownian snake driven by the $\alpha$-stable L\'evy tree. We also study the case of heavier tails, and apply our result to study the number of inversions of a uniformly random permutation indexed by the tree.

Abstract:We consider branching random walks built on Galton-Watson trees with offspring distribution having a bounded support, conditioned to have $n$ nodes, and their rescaled convergences to the Brownian snake. We exhibit a notion of "globally centered discrete snake'' that extends the usual settings in which the displacements are supposed centered. We show that under some additional moment conditions, when $n$ goes to $+\infty$, "globally centered discrete snakes'' converge to the Brownian snake. The proof relies on a precise study of the "lineage'' of the nodes in a Galton-Watson tree conditioned by the size, and their links with a multinomial process. Some consequences concerning Galton-Watson trees conditioned by the size are also derived.

Abstract:The branching capacity has been introduced by [Zhu 2016] as the limit of the hitting probability of a symmetric branching random walk in $\mathbb Z^d$, $d\ge 5$. Similarly, we define the Brownian snake capacity in $\mathbb R^d$, as the scaling limit of the hitting probability by the Brownian snake starting from afar. Then, we prove our main result on the vague convergence of the rescaled branching capacity towards this Brownian snake capacity. Our proof relies on a precise convergence rate for the approximation of the branching capacity by hitting probabilities.

Abstract:We consider the height process of a Levy process with no negative jumps, and its associated continuous tree representation. Using Levy snake tools developed by Duquesne and Le Gall, with an underlying Poisson process, we construct a fragmentation process, which in the stable case corresponds to the self-similar fragmentation described by Miermont. For the general fragmentation process we compute a family of dislocation measures as well as the law of the size of a tagged fragment. We also give a special Markov property for the snake which is interesting in itself.

Abstract:We develop an excursion theory for Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree, which in many respects is analogous to the classical Itô theory for linear Brownian motion. Each excursion is associated with a connected component of the complement of the zero set of the tree-indexed Brownian motion. Each such connectedcomponent is itself a continuous tree, and we introduce a quantity measuring the length of its boundary. The collection of boundary lengths coincides with the collection of jumps of a continuous-state branching process with branching mechanism $\psi(u)=\sqrt{8/3}\,u^{3/2}$. Furthermore, conditionally on the boundary lengths, the different excursions are independent, and we determine their conditional distribution in terms of an excursion measure $\mathbb{M}_0$ which is the analog of the Itô measure of Brownian excursions. We provide various descriptions of the excursion measure $\mathbb{M}_0$, and we also determine several explicit distributions, such as the joint distribution of the boundary length and the mass of an excursion under $\mathbb{M}_0$. We use the Brownian snake as a convenient tool for defining and analysing the excursions of our tree-indexed Brownian motion.

Abstract:In this paper we study the recurrence and transience of the $\mathbb{Z}^d$-valued branching random walk in random environment indexed by a critical Bienaymé-Galton-Watson tree, conditioned to survive. The environment is made either of random conductances or of random traps on each vertex. We show that when the offspring distribution is non degenerate with a finite third moment and the environment satisfies some suitable technical assumptions, then the process is recurrent up to dimension four, and transient otherwise. The proof is based on a truncated second moment method, which only requires to have good estimates on the quenched Green's function. Notably, this provides an alternate proof to the previous argument of Benjamini and Curien in the case of a deterministic, homogeneous environment.

This shows that either a long-standing conjecture by Ballier and Stein (the characterization of groups with decidable domino problem as those virtually free ones) is false, or a question by Aubrun and Bitar has a positive answer (there exists a group for which the domino and snake problems are of different difficulty).

Abstract:It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.

Abstract:Motivated by [G. Cannizzaro, M. Hairer, Comm. Pure Applied Math., '22], we provide a construction of the Brownian Web (see [Tóth B., Werner W., Probab. Theory Related Fields, '98] and [L. R. G. Fontes, M. Isopi, C. M. Newman, and K. Ravishankar, Ann. Probab., '04]), i.e. a family of coalescing Brownian motions starting from every point in $\mathbb R^2$, as a random variable taking values in the space of (spatial) $\mathbb R$-trees. This gives a stronger topology than the classical one {(i.e.\ Hausdorff convergence on closed sets of paths)}, thus providing us with more continuous functions of the Brownian Web and ruling out a number of potential pathological behaviours. Along the way, we introduce a modification of the topology of spatial $\mathbb R$-trees in [T. Duquesne, J.-F. Le Gall, Probab. Theory Related Fields, '05] and [M. T. Barlow, D. A. Croydon, T. Kumagai, Ann. Probab. '17] which makes it a complete separable metric space and could be of independent interest. We determine some properties of the characterisation of the Brownian Web in this context (e.g.\ its box-counting dimension) and recover some which were determined in earlier works, such as duality, special points and convergence of the graphical representation of coalescing random walks.

Abstract:A classical result, fundamental to evolutionary biology, states that an edge-weighted tree $T$ with leaf set $X$, positive edge weights, and no vertices of degree 2 can be uniquely reconstructed from the set of leaf-to-leaf distances between any two elements of $X$. In biology, $X$ corresponds to a set of taxa (e.g. extant species), the tree $T$ describes their phylogenetic relationships, the edges correspond to earlier species evolving for a time until splitting in two or more species by some speciation/bifurcation event, and their length corresponds to the genetic change accumulating over that time in such a species. In this paper, we investigate which subsets of $\binom{X}{2}$ suffice to determine (`lasso') a tree from the leaf-to-leaf distances induced by that tree. The question is particularly topical since reliable estimates of genetic distance - even (if not in particular) by modern mass-sequencing methods - are, in general, available only for certain combinations of taxa.

Thick points of 4D critical branching Brownian motion

Abstract:We study the thick points of branching Brownian motion and branching random walk with a critical branching mechanism, focusing on the critical dimension $d = 4$. We determine the exponent governing the probability to hit a small ball with an exceptionally high number of pioneers, showing that this has a second-order transition between an exponential phase and a stretched-exponential phase at an explicit value ($a = 2$) of the thickness parameter $a$. We apply the outputs of this analysis to prove that the associated set of thick points $\mathcal{T}(a)$ has dimension $(4-a)_+$, so that there is a change in behaviour at $a=4$ but not at $a = 2$ in this case. Along the way, we obtain related results for the nonpositive solutions of a boundary value problem associated to the semilinear PDE $\Delta v = v^2$ and develop a strong coupling between tree-indexed random walk and tree-indexed Brownian motion that allows us to deduce analogues of some of our results in the discrete case. We also obtain in each dimension $d\geq 1$ an infinite-order asymptotic expansion for the probability that critical branching Brownian motion hits a distant unit ball, finding that this expansion is convergent when $d\neq 4$ and divergent when $d=4$. This reveals a novel, dimension-dependent critical exponent governing the higher-order terms of the expansion, which we compute in every dimension.

Dissecting the snake: the transition from localized patterns to isolated spikes in pattern formation systems

Abstract:An investigation is undertaken of coupled reaction-diffusion systems in one spatial dimension that are able to support, in different regions of their parameter space, either an isolated spike solution, or stable localized patterns with an arbitrary number of peaks. The distinction between the two cases is drawn through the behavior of the far field, where there is either an oscillatory or a monotonic decay. Several examples are studied, including the Lugiato-Lefever model, a generalized Schakenberg system that arises in cellular-level morphogensis and a continuum model of urban crime spread. In each, it is found that localized patterns connected via a so-called homoclinic snaking curve in parameter space transition into a single spike solution as a second parameter is varied, via a change in topology of the snake into a series of disconnected branches. In each case, the transition is caused by a so-called Belyakov-Devaney transition between complex and real spatial eigenvalues of the fair field of the primary pulse. A codimension-two problem is studied in detail where a non-transverse homoclinic orbit undergoes this transition. A Shilnikov-style analysis is undertaken which reveals the asymptotics of how the infinite family of folds of multi-pulse orbits are all destroyed at the same parameter value. The results are shown to be consistent with numerical experiments on two of the examples.

Abstract:We consider a Feller diffusion (Zs, s $\ge$ 0) (with diffusion coefficient $\sqrt$ 2$\beta$ and drift $\theta$ $\in$ R) that we condition on {Zt = at}, where at is a deterministic function, and we study the limit in distribution of the conditioned process and of its genealogical tree as t $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$. When at does not increase too rapidly, we recover the standard size-biased process (and the associated genealogical tree given by the Kesten's tree). When at behaves as $\alpha$$\beta$ 2 t 2 when $\theta$ = 0 or as $\alpha$ e 2$\beta$|$\theta$|t when $\theta$ = 0, we obtain a new process whose distribution is described by a Girsanov transformation and equivalently by a SDE with a Poissonian immigration. Its associated genealogical tree is described by an infinite discrete skeleton (which does not satisfy the branching property) decorated with Brownian continuum random trees given by a Poisson point measure. As a by-product of this study, we introduce several sets of trees endowed with a Gromovtype distance which are of independent interest and which allow here to define in a formal and measurable way the decoration of a backbone with a family of continuum random trees.

Brownian Motion on The Spider Like Quantum Graphs

Abstract:The paper contains the probabilistic analysis of the Brownian motion on the simplest quantum graph, spider: a system of N-half axis connected only at the graph's origin by the simplest (so-called Kirchhoff's) gluing conditions. The limit theorems for the diffusion on such a graph, especially if $N \to \infty$ are significantly different from the classical case $N = 2$ (full axis). Additional results concern the properties of the spectral measure of the spider Laplacian and the corresponding generalized Fourier transforms. The continuation of the paper will contain the study of the spectrum for the class of Schrödinger operators on the spider graphs: Laplacian perturbed by unbounded potential and related phase transitions.

The height gap of planar Brownian motion is $\frac{5}π$

Abstract:We show that the occupation measure of planar Brownian motion exhibits a constant height gap of $5/\pi$ across its outer boundary. This property bears similarities with the celebrated results of Schramm--Sheffield [18] and Miller--Sheffield [12] concerning the height gap of the Gaussian free field across SLE$_4$/CLE$_4$ curves. Heuristically, our result can also be thought of as the $\theta \to 0^+$ limit of the height gap property of a field built out of a Brownian loop soup with subcritical intensity $\theta>0$, proved in our recent paper [3]. To obtain the explicit value of the height gap, we rely on the computation by Garban and Trujillo Ferreras [1] of the expected area of the domain delimited by the outer boundary of a Brownian bridge.

Random trees with local catastrophes: the Brownian case

Abstract:We introduce and study a model of plane random trees generalizing the famous Bienaymé--Galton--Watson model but where births and deaths are locally correlated. More precisely, given a random variable $(B,H)$ with values in $\{1,2,3, \dots\}^2$, given the state of the tree at some generation, the next generation is obtained (informally) by successively deleting $B$ individuals side-by-side and replacing them with $H$ new particles where the samplings are i.i.d. We prove that, in the critical case $\mathbb{E}[B]=\mathbb{E}[H]$, and under a third moment condition on $B$ and $H$, the random trees coding the genealogy of the population model converges towards the Brownian Continuum Random Tree. Interestingly, our proof does not use the classical height process or the Łukasiewicz exploration, but rather the stochastic flow point of view introduced by Bertoin and Le Gall.
