Abstract:We prove a variant of Manin's conjecture for Campana points on wonderful compactifications of semi-simple algebraic groups of adjoint type. We use this to provide evidence for a new conjecture on the leading constant in Manin's conjecture for Campana points.

Abstract:Campana introduced a notion of Campana rational connectedness for Campana orbifolds. Given a Campana fibration over a complex curve, we prove that a version of weak approximation for Campana sections holds at places of good reduction when the general fiber satisfies a slightly stronger version of Campana rational connectedness. Campana also conjectured that any Fano orbifold is Campana rationally connected; we verify a stronger statement for toric Campana orbifolds. A key tool in our study is log geometry and moduli stacks of stable log maps.

Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:Consider a smooth, projective family of canonically polarized varieties over a smooth, quasi-projective base manifold Y, all defined over the complex numbers. It has been conjectured that the family is necessarily isotrivial if Y is special in the sense of Campana. We prove the conjecture when Y is a surface or threefold. The proof uses sheaves of symmetric differentials associated to fractional boundary divisors on log canonical spaces, as introduced by Campana in his theory of Orbifoldes Geometriques. We discuss a weak variant of the Harder-Narasimhan Filtration and prove a version of the Bogomolov-Sommese Vanishing Theorem that take the additional fractional positivity along the boundary into account. A brief, but self-contained introduction to Campana's theory is included for the reader's convenience.

Abstract:We introduce and study smooth compactifications of the moduli space of n labeled points with weights in projective space, which have normal crossings boundary and are defined as GIT quotients of the weighted Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show that the GIT quotient of a wonderful compactification is also a wonderful compactification under certain hypotheses. We also study a weighted version of the configuration spaces parametrizing n points in affine space up to translation and homothety. In dimension one, the above compactifications are isomorphic to Hassett's moduli space of rational weighted stable curves.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:We verify the transcendental part of a conjecture of Campana predicting that the rational points on the weakly-special non-special simply-connected smooth projective threefolds constructed by Bogomolov-Tschinkel are not dense. To prove our result, we establish fundamental properties of moduli spaces of orbifold maps. The crux of the argument relies on a dimension bound for such moduli spaces which relies on a recently established extension of Kobayashi-Ochiai's finiteness theorem to the more general setting of Campana's orbifold pairs.

Abstract:We construct an integral model for counting Campana points of bounded height on diagonal hypersurfaces of degree greater than one, and give an asymptotic formula for their number, generalising work by Browning and Yamagishi. The paper also includes background material on the theory of Campana points on hyperplanes and previous results in the field.

Abstract:We study local-global principles for two notions of semi-integral points, termed Campana points and Darmon points. In particular, we develop a semi-integral version of the Brauer–Manin obstruction interpolating between Manin’s classical version for rational points and the integral version developed by Colliot-Thélène and Xu. We determine the status of local-global principles, and obstructions to them, in two families of orbifolds naturally associated to quadric hypersurfaces. Further, we establish a quantitative result measuring the failure of the semi-integral Brauer–Manin obstruction to account for its integral counterpart for affine quadrics.

Abstract:We study a family of moduli spaces and corresponding quantum invariants introduced recently by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan. The family has a wall-and-chamber structure relative to a positive rational parameter is an element of. For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial W (not necessarily of Calabi-Yau type), we study natural generating functions packaging the invariants. Our wall-crossing formula relates the generating functions by showing that they all lie on the Lagrangian cone associated to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W. For arbitrarily small parameter is an element of, a specialization of our generating function is a hypergeometric series called the big I-function which determines the entire Lagrangian cone. As a special case of our wall-crossing, we obtain a new geometric interpretation of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem.

Abstract:We exhibit the first non-trivial concrete examples of Gromov-Hausdorff compactifications of moduli spaces of K\"ahler-Einstein Fano manifolds in all complex dimensions bigger than two (Fano K-moduli spaces). We also discuss potential applications to explicit study of moduli spaces of K-stable Fano manifolds with large anti-canonical volume. Our arguments are based on recent progress about the geometry of metric tangent cones and on related ideas about the algebro-geometric study of singularities of K-stable Fano varieties.

Abstract:We introduce a general framework for studying special subsets of rational points on an algebraic variety, termed $\mathcal{M}$-points. The notion of $\mathcal{M}$-points generalizes the concepts of integral points, Campana points and Darmon points. We introduce and study $M$-approximation over number fields and function fields, which is a notion that generalizes weak and strong approximation. We show that this property implies that the set of $\mathcal{M}$-points is not thin. We then give a simple characterisation of when a split toric variety satisfies $M$-approximation, generalizing work of Nakahara and Streeter. Further, we determine when the set of $\mathcal{M}$-points on a split toric variety is thin.

An equivariant compactification for adjoint reductive group schemes

Abstract:Wonderful compactifications of adjoint reductive groups over an algebraically closed field play an important role in algebraic geometry and representation theory. In this paper, we construct an equivariant compactification for adjoint reductive groups over arbitrary base schemes. Our compactifications parameterize classical wonderful compactifications of De Concini and Procesi as geometric fibers. Our construction is based on a variant of the Artin-Weil method of birational group laws. In particular, our construction gives a new intrinsic construction of wonderful compactifications. The Picard group scheme of our compactifications is computed. We also discuss several applications of our compactification in the study of torsors under reductive group schemes.

Compactifications of the Eisenstein ancestral Deligne-Mostow variety

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Mod $p$ points on Shimura varieties of parahoric level (with an appendix by Rong Zhou)

Abstract:We study the mod $p$-points of the Kisin--Pappas integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type with parahoric level. We show that if the group is quasi-split, then every isogeny class contains the reduction of a CM point, proving a conjecture of Kisin--Madapusi-Pera--Shin. We furthermore show that the mod $p$ isogeny classes are of the form predicted by the Langlands--Rapoport conjecture if either the Shimura variety is proper or if the group at $p$ is unramified. The main ingredient in our work is a global argument that allows us to reduce the conjecture to the case of very special parahoric level. This case is dealt with in the appendix by Rong Zhou. As a corollary to our arguments, we determine the connected components of Ekedahl--Oort strata.

Abstract:We prove that the affine closure of the cotangent bundle of the basic affine space of a complex semisimple group has conical symplectic singularities, which confirms a conjecture of Ginzburg and Kazhdan. We also show that this variety is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial and has terminal singularities.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

A Remark on Fujino's work on the canonical bundle formula via period maps

Abstract:Fujino gave a proof in [Fuj03] for the semi-ampleness of the moduli part in the canonical bundle formula in the case when the general fibers are K3 surfaces or Abelian varieties. We show a similar statement when the general fibers are primitive symplectic varieties with mild singularities. This answers a question of Fujino raised in the same article. Moreover, using the structure theory of varieties with trivial first Chern class, we reduce the question of semi-ampleness in the case of families of K-trivial varieties to a question when the general fibers satisfy a slightly weaker Calabi-Yau condition.

Wonderful compactifications of Bruhat-Tits buildings in the non-split case

Abstract:Given an adjoint semisimple group $G$ over a local field $k$, we prove that the maximal Satake-Berkovich compactification of the Bruhat-Tits building of $G$ can be identified with the one obtained by embedding the building into the Berkovich analytification of the wonderful compactification of $G$, extending previous results of Rémy, Thuillier and Werner. In the process, we use the characterisation of the wonderful compactification in terms of Hilbert schemes given by Brion to extend the definition of the wonderful compactification to the case of a non-necessarily split adjoint semisimple group over an arbitrary field and investigate some of its properties pertaining to rational points on the boundary. Lastly, given a finite possibly ramified Galois extension $k'/k$, we take a look at the action of the Galois group on the maximal compactification of the building of $G$ over $k'$ and check that the Galois-fixed points are precisely the limits of sequences of fixed points in the building over $k'$, though they may not lie in the Satake-Berkovich compactification of $G$ over $k$.

Abstract:We construct proper moduli algebraic spaces of K-polystable $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano cones (a.k.a. Calabi-Yau cones) or equivalently their links i.e., Sasaki-Einstein manifolds with singularities. As a byproduct, it gives alternative algebraic construction of proper K-moduli of $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties. In contrast to the previous algebraic proof of its properness ([BHLLX, LXZ]), we do not use the $\delta$-invariants ([FO, BJ]) nor the $L^2$-normalized Donaldson-Futaki invariants. We use the local normalized volume of [Li] and the higher $\Theta$-stable reduction instead.
