Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive $p$-adic group. As verified for unipotent representations, it is expected that there is a close relation between the (Harish-Chandra-Howe) wavefronts sets of irreducible smooth representations and their Langlands parameters in the local Langlands correspondence via the Lusztig-Spaltenstein duality and the Aubert-Zelevinsky duality. In this paper, we define the $\Gamma$-asymptotic wavefront sets generalizing the notion of wavefront sets via the $\Gamma$-asymptotic expansions (in the sense of Kim-Murnaghan), and then study the their relation with the Langlands parameters. When $G=GL_n$, it turns out that this reduces to the corresponding relation of unipotent representations of the appropriate twisted Levi subgroups via Hecke algebra isomorphisms. For unipotent representations of $GL_n$, we also describe the Harish-Chandra-Howe (HCH) local character expansions of irreducible smooth representations using Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, and give another computation of the coefficients in the HCH expansion and the wavefront sets.

Abstract:The wave-front set for an irreducible admissible representation of a $p$-adic reductive group is the set of maximal nilpotent orbits which appear in the local character expansion. By Mœglin-Waldspurger, they are also the maximal nilpotent orbits whose associated degenerate Whittaker models are non-zero. However, in the literature there are two versions commonly used, one defining maximality using analytic closure and the other using Zariski closure. We show that these two definitions are non-equivalent for $G=Sp_4$.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a classical group defined over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero. Let $\pi$ be an irreducible admissible representation $\pi$ of $G(F)$, which is of Casselman-Wallach type if $F$ is archimedean. If $\pi$ has a generic local $L$-parameter, we define the arithmetic wavefront set ${\rm WF_{ari}}(\pi)$ of $\pi$, which is a subset of $F$-rational nilpotent orbits of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}(F)$ of $G(F)$, by means of the arithmetic structures of the enhanced $L$-parameter $(\varphi,\chi)$ of $\pi$. Those arithmetic structures are discovered by using our method of consecutive descents of enhanced $L$-parameters, based on the rationality of the local Langlands correspondence and the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. We study the basic structure of ${\rm WF_{ari}(\pi)}$ and prove that it is an invariant of $\pi$ (Theorem 5.10). The basic structures of ${\rm WF_{ari}(\pi)^{max}}$ are described by Conjecture 1.3, which asserts that the $F$-rational structure of ${\rm WF_{ari}(\pi)^{max}}$ can be completely determined by our method of consecutive descents of enhanced $L$-parameters. When $F$ is archimedean, Theorems 1.4 and 1.5 confirm much refined $F$-rational structure on ${\rm WF_{ari}(\pi)^{max}}$ than what Conjecture 1.3 says. Based on the local Langlands reciprocity, Conjecture 1.2 asserts that the wavefront sets on the $L$-parameter side should be closed related to those on the representation side, namely, \[ {\rm WF_{wm}(\pi)^{max}}={\rm WF_{ari}(\pi)^{max}}={\rm WF_{tr}(\pi)^{max}} \] when $\pi$ has a generic local $L$-parameter, where the algebraic wavefront set ${\rm WF_{wm}}(\pi)$ is defined by Moeglin and Waldspurger [MW87] using generalized Whittaker models, and the analytic wavefront set ${\rm WF_{tr}}(\pi)$ is defined by Howe [H81, Hd85] using distribution characters, and also by [H74, HC78, BV80]. Conjecture 1.2 is verified for families of interesting cases.

Abstract:In [JZ1], D. Jiang and L. Zhang proposed a conjecture which related the wavefront sets and the descent method in the local fields case. Recently, in [JLZ], they and D. Liu define the arithmetic wavefront set of a certain irreducible admissible representation π of a classical group G ( k ) defined over a local field k , which is a subset of k -rational nilpotent orbits of the Lie algebra of G ( k ), by the arithmetic structures of the enhanced L-parameter of π . These arithmetic structures are based on the rationality of the local Langlands correspondence and the local Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture. They also prove that the arithmetic wavefront set is an invariant of π (it is independent of the choice of the Whittaker datum [JLZ, Theorem 1.1]), and propose several conjectures to describe the relationship between arithmetic wavefront sets, analytic wavefront sets and algebraic wavefront sets.

Abstract:We study the wave-front set of an element in a $p$-adic reductive Lie algebra (for $p\gg\operatorname{rank}$), namely the set of maximal nilpotent orbits appearing in its Shalika germ expansion. By adapting an algorithm of Waldspurger that computes orbital integrals, we obtain an inductive algorithm to compute an invariant that determines the wave-front set. This gives an algorithm to compute the wave-front sets for regular supercuspidal representations and reveals examples whose wave-front sets are not contained in a single geometric orbit, for arbitrarily large $p$ within a fixed rank.

Abstract:In this paper we study the upper bound of wavefront sets of irreducible admissible representations of connected reductive groups defined over non-Archimedean local fields of characteristic zero. We formulate a new conjecture on the upper bound and show that it can be reduced to that of anti-discrete series representations, namely, those whose Aubert-Zelevinsky duals are discrete series. Then, we show that this conjecture is equivalent to the Jiang conjecture on the upper bound of wavefront sets of representations in local Arthur packets and also equivalent to an analogous conjecture on the upper bound of wavefront sets of representations in local ABV packets.

Abstract:Let W be a real symplectic space and (G, G′) an irreducible dual pair in Sp(W), in the sense of Howe, with G compact. Let be the preimage of G in the metaplectic group . Given an irreducible unitary representation Π of that occurs in the restriction of the Weil representation to , let Θ Π denote its character. We prove that, for a suitable embedding T of in the space of tempered distributions on W, the distribution T (Θ̌ Π ) admits an asymptotic limit, and the limit is a nilpotent orbital integral. As an application, we compute the wave front set of Π′, the representation of dual to Π, by elementary means.

Abstract:We study a conjectural formula for the maximal elements in the wavefront set associated with a theta representation of a covering group over $p$-adic fields. In particular, it is shown that the formula agrees with the existing work in the literature for various families of groups. We also recapitulate the results of an analogous formula in the archimedean case, which motivated the conjectural formula in the $p$-adic setting.

The stable wave front set of theta representations

Abstract:We compute the stable wave front set of theta representations for certain tame Brylinski-Deligne covers of a connected reductive $p$-adic group. The computation involves two main inputs. First we use a theorem of Okada, adapted to covering groups, to reduce the computation of the wave front set to computing the Kawanaka wave front set of certain representations of finite groups of Lie type. Second, to compute the Kawanaka wave front sets we use Lusztig's formula. This requires a careful analysis of the action of the pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra on the theta representation, using the structural results about Hecke algebras developed by Gao-Gurevich-Karasiewicz and Wang.

Moduli of Langlands Parameters

Abstract:Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field of residue characteristic $p$, let $\hat{G}$ be a split reductive group over $\mathbb{Z}[1/p]$ with an action of $W_F$, and let $^LG$ denote the semidirect product $\hat{G}\rtimes W_F$. We construct a moduli space of Langlands parameters $W_F \to {^LG}$, and show that it is locally of finite type and flat over $\mathbb{Z}[1/p]$, and that it is a reduced local complete intersection. We give parameterizations of the connected components and the irreducible components of the geometric fibers of this space, and parameterizations of the connected components of the total space over $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}[1/p]$ (under mild hypotheses) and over $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ell}$ for $\ell\neq p$. In each case, we show precisely how each connected component identifies with the "principal" connected component attached to a smaller split reductive group scheme. Finally we study the GIT quotient of this space by $\hat{G}$ and give a complete description of its fibers up to homeomorphism, and a complete description of its ring of functions after inverting an explicit finite set of primes depending only on $^LG$.

Distinction of the Steinberg representation with respect to a symmetric pair

Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $K$, let $\theta$ be an involution of $G$ over $K$, and let $H$ be the connected component of $\theta$-fixed subgroup of $G$ over $K$. By realizing the Steinberg representation of $G$ as the $G$-space of complex smooth harmonic cochains following the idea of Broussous--Courtès, we study its space of distinction by $H$ as a finite dimensional complex vector space. We give an upper bound of the dimension, and under certain conditions, we show that the upper bound is sharp by explicitly constructing a basis using the technique of Poincaré series. Finally, we apply our general theory to the case where $G$ is a general linear group and $H$ a special orthogonal subgroup, which leads to a complete classification result.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:We study a family of moduli spaces and corresponding quantum invariants introduced recently by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan. The family has a wall-and-chamber structure relative to a positive rational parameter is an element of. For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial W (not necessarily of Calabi-Yau type), we study natural generating functions packaging the invariants. Our wall-crossing formula relates the generating functions by showing that they all lie on the Lagrangian cone associated to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W. For arbitrarily small parameter is an element of, a specialization of our generating function is a hypergeometric series called the big I-function which determines the entire Lagrangian cone. As a special case of our wall-crossing, we obtain a new geometric interpretation of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem.
Affine Hecke algebras for Langlands parameters

Abstract:It is well-known that affine Hecke algebras are very useful to describe the smooth representations of any connected reductive p-adic group G, in terms of the supercuspidal representations of its Levi subgroups. The goal of this paper is to create a similar role for affine Hecke algebras on the Galois side of the local Langlands correspondence. To every Bernstein component of enhanced Langlands parameters for G we canonically associate an affine Hecke algebra (possibly extended with a finite R-group). We prove that the irreducible representations of this algebra are naturally in bijection with the members of the Bernstein component, and that the set of central characters of the algebra is naturally in bijection with the collection of cuspidal supports of these enhanced Langlands parameters. These bijections send tempered or (essentially) square-integrable representations to the expected kind of Langlands parameters. Furthermore we check that for many reductive p-adic groups, if a Bernstein component B for G corresponds to a Bernstein component B^\vee of enhanced Langlands parameters via the local Langlands correspondence, then the affine Hecke algebra that we associate to B^\vee is Morita equivalent with the Hecke algebra associated to B. This constitutes a generalization of Lusztig's work on unipotent representations. It might be useful to establish a local Langlands correspondence for more classes of irreducible smooth representations.

Local character expansions via positive depth Barbasch-Moy theory

Abstract:In this paper we extend Barbasch and Moy's results about the local character expansion of depth-$0$ representations to arbitrary depth. This leads to the definition of a graded linearized version of the Kawanaka wavefront set which we use to prove that for unramified groups, the toral supercuspidal representations attached to unramified tori have singleton geometric wavefront sets provided the residue characteristic is greater than $3(h-1)$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number for $\mathbb G$. In the process we introduce the notion of the asymptotic cone in the context of geometric invariant theory and prove it is irreducible in the case of a reductive group acting on its Lie algebra via the adjoint action using Borho's theory of $\mathbb G$-sheets.

Wavefront sets and descent method for finite unitary groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In the 1980s, Kawanaka introduced the generalized Gelfand-Graev representations (GGGRs for short) of the finite group $G^F$ in the case where $q$ is a power of a good prime for $G^F$. An essential feature of GGGRs is that they are very closely related to the (Kawanaka) wavefront sets of the irreducible representations $\pi$ of $G^F$. In \cite[Theorem 11.2]{L7}, Lusztig showed that if a nilpotent element $X\in G^F$ is ``large'' for an irreducible representation $\pi$, then the representation $\pi$ appears with ``small'' multiplicity in the GGGR associated to $X$. In this paper, we prove that for unitary groups, if $X$ is the wavefront of $\pi$, the multiplicity equals one, which generalizes the multiplicity one result of usual Gelfand-Graev representations. Moreover, we give an algorithm to decompose GGGRs for $\textrm{U}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and calculate the $\textrm{U}_4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ case by this algorithm.

An Iwahori theoretic mod $p$ Local Langlands Correspondence

Abstract:We extend a comparison theorem of Anandavardhanan-Borisagar between the quotient of the induction of a mod $p$ character by the image of an Iwahori-Hecke operator and compact induction of a weight to the case of the trivial character. This involves studying the corresponding non-commutative Iwahori-Hecke algebra. We use this to give an Iwahori theoretic reformulation of the (semi-simple) mod $p$ Local Langlands Correspondence discovered by Breuil and reformulated functorially by Colmez. This version of the correspondence is expected to have applications to computing the mod $p$ reductions of semi-stable Galois representations.

Local Langlands in families: The banal case

Abstract:We state a conjecture, local Langlands in families, connecting the centre of the category of smooth representations on $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$-modules of a quasi-split $p$-adic group $\mathrm{G}$ (where $q$ is the cardinality of the residue field of the underlying local field), the ring of global functions on the stack of Langlands parameters for $\mathrm{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$, and the endomorphisms of a Gelfand-Graev representation for $\mathrm{G}$. For a class of classical $p$-adic groups (symplectic, unitary, or split odd special orthogonal groups), we prove this conjecture after inverting an integer depending only on $\mathrm{G}$. Along the way, we show that the local Langlands correspondence for classical $p$-adic groups (1) preserves integrality of $\ell$-adic representations; (2) satisfies an "extended" (generic) packet conjecture; (3) is compatible with parabolic induction up to semisimplification (generalizing a result of Moussaoui), hence induces a semisimple local Langlands correspondence; and (4) the semisimple correspondence is compatible with automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ fixing $\sqrt{q}$.

Wavelet characterizations of the Sobolev wavefront set: bandlimited wavelets and compactly supported wavelets

Abstract:We consider the problem of characterizing the Sobolev wavefront set of a tempered distribution $u\in\mathcal{S}'(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ in terms of its continuous wavelet transform, with the latter being defined with respect to a suitably chosen dilation group $H\subset{\rm GL}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. We derive necessary and sufficient criteria for elements of the Sobolev wavefront set, formulated in terms of the decay behaviour of a given generalized continuous wavelet transform. It turns out that the characterization of directed smoothness of finite order can be performed in the two important cases: (1) bandlimited wavelets, and (2) wavelets with finitely many vanishing moments (e.g.~compactly supported wavelets).

Abstract:Using the results of J. Arthur on the representation theory of classical groups with additional work by Colette Moeglin and its relation with representations of affine Hecke algebras established by the author, we show that the category of smooth complex representations of a split $p$-adic classical group and its pure inner forms is naturally decomposed into subcategories which are equivalent to a tensor product of categories of unipotent representations of classical groups (in the sense of G. Lusztig). A statement of this kind had been conjecture by G. Lusztig. All classical groups (general linear, orthogonal, symplectic and unitary groups) appear in this context. We get also parameterizations of representations of affine Hecke algebras, which seem not all to be in the literature yet. All this should also shed some light on what is known as the stable Bernstein center.
