Abstract:We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculus and combined with non-Hermitian perturbation theory. The emergence of the universal central limit law in a spectral representation is shown explicitly on large deviation time-scales. For reversible dynamics with equilibrated initial conditions we derive a general upper bound to fluctuations of occupation measures in terms of an integral of the return probability. Simple, exactly solvable examples are analyzed to demonstrate how to apply the theory. As a biophysical example we revisit the Berg-Purcell problem on the precision of concentration measurements by a single receptor. Our results are directly applicable to a diverse range of phenomena underpinned by time-average observables and additive functionals in physical, chemical, biological, and economical systems.

Spectral properties of three-dimensional Anderson model

Abstract:The three-dimensional Anderson model represents a paradigmatic model to understand the Anderson localization transition. In this work we first review some key results obtained for this model in the past 50 years, and then study its properties from the perspective of modern numerical approaches. Our main focus is on the quantitative comparison between the level sensitivity statistics and the level statistics. While the former studies the sensitivity of Hamiltonian eigenlevels upon inserting a magnetic flux, the latter studies the properties of unperturbed eigenlevels. We define two versions of dimensionless conductance, the first corresponding to the width of the level curvature distribution relative to the mean level spacing, and the second corresponding to the ratio of the Heisenberg and the Thouless time obtained from the spectral form factor. We show that both conductances look remarkably similar around the localization transition, in particular, they predict a nearly identical critical point consistent with other measures of the transition. We then study some further properties of those quantities: for level curvatures, we discuss particular similarities and differences between the width of the level curvature distribution and the characteristic energy studied by Edwards and Thouless in their pioneering work [J. Phys. C. 5, 807 (1972)]. In the context of the spectral form factor, we show that at the critical point it enters a broad time-independent regime, in which its value is consistent with the level compressibility obtained from the level variance. Finally, we test the scaling solution of the average level spacing ratio in the crossover regime using the cost function minimization approach introduced in [Phys. Rev. B. 102, 064207 (2020)]. We find that the extracted transition point and the scaling coefficient agree with those from the literature to high numerical accuracy.

Abstract:We continue our study of intermittency for the parabolic Anderson equation, i.e., the spatially discrete heat equation on the d-dimensional integer lattice with a space-time random potential. The solution of the equation describes the evolution of a "reactant" under the influence of a "catalyst". <br> In this paper we focus on the case where the random field is an exclusion process with a symmetric random walk transition kernel, starting from Bernoulli equilibrium. We consider the annealed Lyapunov exponents, i.e., the exponential growth rates of the successive moments of the solution. We show that these exponents are trivial when the random walk is recurrent, but display an interesting dependence on the diffusion constant when the random walk is transient, with qualitatively different behavior in different dimensions. Special attention is given to the asymptotics of the exponents when the diffusion constant tends to infinity, which is controlled by moderate deviations of the random field requiring a delicate expansion argument. <br> In Gärtner and den Hollander [10] the case of a Poisson field of independent (simple) random walks was studied. The two cases show interesting differences and similarities. Throughout the paper, a comparison of the two cases plays a crucial role.

Abstract:We consider the continuous Anderson operator $H=\Delta+\xi$ on a two dimensional closed Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{S}$. We provide a short self-contained functional analysis construction of the operator as an unbounded operator on $L^2(\mathcal{S})$ and give almost sure spectral gap estimates under mild geometric assumptions on the Riemannian manifold. We prove a sharp Gaussian small time asymptotic for the heat kernel of $H$ that leads amongst others to strong norm estimates for quasimodes. We introduce a new random field, called Anderson Gaussian free field, and prove that the law of its random partition function characterizes the law of the spectrum of $H$. We also give a simple and short construction of the polymer measure on path space and relate the Wick square of the Anderson Gaussian free field to the occupation measure of a Poisson process of loops of polymer paths. We further prove large deviation results for the polymer measure and its bridges.

Abstract:Anderson localization predicts that wave spreading in disordered lattices can come to a complete halt, providing a universal mechanism for {dynamical localization}. In the one-dimensional Hermitian Anderson model with uncorrelated diagonal disorder, there is a one-to-one correspondence between dynamical localization and spectral localization, i.e. the exponential localization of all the Hamiltonian eigenfunctions. This correspondence can be broken when dealing with disordered dissipative lattices. Recently, it has been shown that when the system exchanges particles with the surrounding environment and random fluctuations of the dissipation are introduced, spectral localization is observed but without dynamical localization. Such previous studies considered lattices with mixed conservative (Hamiltonian) and dissipative dynamics, and were restricted to a semiclassical analysis. However, Anderson localization in purely dissipative lattices, displaying an entirely Lindbladian dynamics, remains largely unexplored. Here we consider the purely-dissipative Anderson model in the framework of a Lindblad master equation and show that, akin to the semiclassical models with conservative hopping and random dissipation, one observes dynamical delocalization in spite of strong spectral localization of all eigenstates of the Liouvillian superoperator. This result is very distinct than delocalization observed in the Anderson model with dephasing effects, where dynamical delocalization arises from the delocalization of the stationary state of the Liouvillian superoperator.

Abstract:We continue our study of intermittency for the parabolic Anderson model $\partial u/\partial t = \kappa\Delta u + \xi u$ in a space-time random medium $\xi$, where $\kappa$ is a positive diffusion constant, $\Delta$ is the lattice Laplacian on $\Z^d$, $d \geq 1$, and $\xi$ is a simple symmetric exclusion process on $\Z^d$ in Bernoulli equilibrium. This model describes the evolution of a \emph{reactant} $u$ under the influence of a \emph{catalyst} $\xi$. In Gärtner, den Hollander and Maillard (2007) we investigated the behavior of the annealed Lyapunov exponents, i.e., the exponential growth rates as $t\to\infty$ of the successive moments of the solution $u$. This led to an almost complete picture of intermittency as a function of $d$ and $\kappa$. In the present paper we finish our study by focussing on the asymptotics of the Lyaponov exponents as $\kappa\to\infty$ in the \emph{critical} dimension $d=3$, which was left open in Gärtner, den Hollander and Maillard (2007) and which is the most challenging. We show that, interestingly, this asymptotics is characterized not only by a \emph{Green} term, as in $d\geq 4$, but also by a \emph{polaron} term. The presence of the latter implies intermittency of \emph{all} orders above a finite threshold for $\kappa$.

The Anderson localization transition is further confirmed by checking the linearity in the parametric representation of the singularity strength and by checking the universality of the forms of the singularity spectra of different system sizes. Anderson localization transition in disordered hyperbolic lattices

Abstract:We study Anderson localization in disordered tight-binding models on hyperbolic lattices. Such lattices are geometries intermediate between ordinary two-dimensional crystalline lattices, which localize at infinitesimal disorder, and Bethe lattices, which localize at strong disorder. Using state-of-the-art computational group theory methods to create large systems, we approximate the thermodynamic limit through appropriate periodic boundary conditions and numerically demonstrate the existence of an Anderson localization transition on the $\{8,3\}$ and $\{8,8\}$ lattices. We find unusually large critical disorder strengths, determine critical exponents, and observe a strong finite-size effect in the level statistics.

Abstract:We consider discrete Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ with bounded random but not necessarily identically distributed values of the potential. We prove spectral localization (with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions) as well as dynamical localization for this model. An important ingredient of the proof is a non-stationary version of the parametric Furstenberg Theorem on random matrix products, which is also of independent interest.

Abstract:We examine the onset of Anderson localization in three-dimensional systems with structural disorder in the form of lattice irregularities and in the absence of any on-site disordered potential. Analyzing two models with distinct types of lattice regularities, we show that the Anderson localization transition occurs when the strength of the structural disorder is smoothly increased. Performing finite-size scaling analysis of the results, we show that the transition belongs to the same universality class as regular Anderson localization induced by onsite disorder. Our work identifies a new class of structurally disordered lattice models in which destructive interference of matter waves may inhibit transport and lead to a transition between metallic and localized phases.

Abstract:We prove a uniform exponential localization of eigenfunctions and simplicity of spectrum for a class of limit-periodic lattice Schr ̈odinger operators. An important ingredient of the proof is a generalized variant of the well-known Minami estimates (correlation inequalities for the eigenvalues) to the case where the spectral intervals can be arbitrarily placed in the real line. The new corre- lation inequalities allow us to substantially simplify and make more transparent the application of the KAM (Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser) techniques.

Abstract:In the framework of non-Hermitian photonics, we investigate the interplay between disorder and non-Hermiticity in a one-dimensional Hatano-Nelson lattice. While Anderson localization dictates the wave's evolution in conservative random systems, the introduction of non-Hermiticity tends to force the beam to unidirectionally propagate towards one edge of the potential due to the existence of skin modes. As we show, the antagonism between these effects results in qualitatively distinct phases of wave diffraction, including counter-intuitive characteristics regarding the relationship between the strength of disorder and the wavepacket's velocity.

Abstract:We study the spectrum and dynamics of a one-dimensional discrete Dirac operator in a random potential obtained by damping an i.i.d. environment with an envelope of type $n^{-\alpha}$ for $\alpha>0$. We recover all the spectral regimes previously obtained for the analogue Anderson model in a random decaying potential, namely: absolutely continuous spectrum in the super-critical region $\alpha>\frac12$; a transition from pure point to singular continuous spectrum in the critical region $\alpha=\frac12$; and pure point spectrum in the sub-critical region $\alpha<\frac12$. From the dynamical point of view, delocalization in the super-critical region follows from the RAGE theorem. In the critical region, we exhibit a simple argument based on lower bounds on eigenfunctions showing that no dynamical localization can occur even in the presence of point spectrum. Finally, we show dynamical localization in the sub-critical region by means of the fractional moments method and provide control on the eigenfunctions.

Abstract:We study the spectral minimum and Lifshitz tails for continuum random Schrödinger operators of the form \begin{equation*} H_{\om}=-\De+V_{0}+\sum_{i\in\Z^{d}}\om_{i}u(\cdot-i), \end{equation*} where $V_{0}$ is the periodic potential, $\{\om_{i}\}_{i\in\Z^{d}}$ are i.i.d random variables and $u$ is the sign-indefinite impurity potential. Recently, this model has been proven to exhibit Lifshitz tails near the bottom of the spectrum under the small support assuption of $u$ and the reflection symmetry assumption of $V_{0}$ and $u$. We here drop the reflection symmetry assumption of $V_{0}$ and $u$. We first give characterizations of the bottom of the spectrum. Then, we show the existence of Lifshitz tails in the regime where the characterization of the bottom of the spectrum is explicit. In particular, this regime covers the reflection symmetry case.

Electron liquid state in the symmetric Anderson lattice

Abstract:Using mean field approach, we provide analytical and numerical solution of the symmetric Anderson lattice for arbitrary dimension at half filling. The symmetric Anderson lattice is equivalent to the Kondo lattice, which makes it possible to study the behavior of an electron liquid in the Kondo lattice. We have shown that, due to hybridization (through an effective field due to localized electrons) of electrons with different spins and momenta $\textbf{k}$ and $\textbf{k}+\overrightarrow{\pi}$, the gap in the electron spectrum opens at half filling. Such hybridization breaks the conservation of the total magnetic momentum of electrons, the spontaneous symmetry is broken. The state of electron liquid is characterized by a large Fermi surface. A gap in the spectrum is calculated depending on the magnitude of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and value of s-d hybridization for the chain, as well as for square and cubic lattices. Anomalous behavior of the heat capacity at low temperatures in the gapped state, which is realized in the symmetric Anderson lattice, was also found.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have gained a lot of interest in recent years. However, notions of chaos and localization in such systems have not reached the same level of maturity as in the Hermitian systems. Here, we consider non-Hermitian interacting disordered Hamiltonians and attempt to analyze their chaotic behavior or lack of it through the lens of the recently introduced non-Hermitian analog of the spectral form factor and the complex spacing ratio. We consider three widely relevant non-Hermitian models which are unique in their ways and serve as excellent platforms for such investigations. Two of the models considered are short-ranged and have different symmetries. The third model is long-ranged whose Hermitian counterpart has itself become a subject of growing interest. All these models exhibit a deep connection with the non-Hermitian random matrix theory of corresponding symmetry classes at relatively weak disorder. At relatively strong disorder, the models show the absence of complex eigenvalue correlation, thereby, corresponding to Poisson statistics. Abstract:We study the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) in finite conductors with diffusive disorder. The disorder averaged logarithm of $\chi$, the overlap between the ground states before and after adding a static impurity, is found to depend nonmonotonically on the disorder. In two dimensions $<\ln\chi^{-1}> \propto \ln^2 N$ in the weak disorder limit, thus showing a stronger dependence on the number of electrons $N$ than in the canonical AOC. A very broad tail of the distribution of $\chi$, found numerically, is a signature of the importance of a few-level statistics at the Fermi energy.
