Abstract:Given a multi-EGS-group $K$ acting on the $p$-adic rooted tree, where $p$ is any prime number, we compute the exponent of the congruence quotient $K_n= K/ \St_K(n)$ for all $n\ge 1$. The formula that we obtain for $\exp(K_n)$ only depends on $p$, $n$ and the periodicity of $K$.

Abstract:If $p$ is an odd prime, then we prove that $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid p\ \e(G)$ for $p$ groups of class 7. We prove the same for $p$ groups of class at most $p+1$ with $\e(Z(G))=p$. We also prove Schurs conjecture if $\e(G/Z(G))$ is $2,3$ or $6$. Furthermore we prove that if $G$ is a solvable group of derived length $d$ and $\e(G)=p$, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^{d-1}$. We also show that if $G$ is a finite $2$ or $3$ generator group of exponent 5, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^2$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an affine or hyperbolic rank 2 Kac--Moody group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $X=X_{q+1}$ be the Tits building of $G$, the $q+1$--homogeneous tree. Let $\Gamma$ be a nonuniform lattice in $G$. When $\Gamma=P_i^-$, $i=1,2$, the standard parabolic subgroup for the negative $BN$--pair, the quotient graph $P^-_i\backslash X$ is the positive half of the fundamental apartment of $X$, a semi-infinite ray. We define Eisenstein series on $P_1^-\backslash X$. We prove convergence of Eisenstein series in a half space. This uses Iwasawa decomposition of the Haar measure on $G$. A crucial tool is a description of the vertices of $X$ in terms of Iwasawa cells, which we give. We prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series using the Selberg--Bernstein continuation principle. This requires an analog of integral operators on the Tits building and the classical truncation operator for Eisenstein series, which we construct.

The Gan-Gross-Prasad period of Klingen Eisenstein families over unitary groups

Abstract:In this article, we compute the Gan-Gross-Prasad period integral of Klingen Eisenstein series over the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(m+1, n+1)$ with a cuspidal automorphic form over $\mathrm{U}(m+1, n)$, and show that it is related to certain special Rankin-Selberg $L$-values. We $p$-adically interpolate these Gan-Gross-Prasad period integrals as the Klingen Eisenstein series and the cuspidal automorphic form vary in Hida families. As a byproduct, we obtain a $p$-adic $L$-function of Rankin-Selberg type over $\mathrm{U}(m,n) \times \mathrm{U}(m+1, n)$. The ultimate motivation is to show the $p$-primitive property of Klingen Eisenstein series over unitary groups, by computing such Gan-Gross-Prasad period integrals, and this article is a starting point of this project. The $p$-primitivity of Eisenstein series is an essential property in the automorphic method in Iwasawa theory.

GGS-groups acting on trees of growing degrees

Abstract:We consider analogues of Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki (GGS-)groups acting on trees of growing degree; the so-called growing GGS-groups. These groups are not just infinite and do not possess the congruence subgroup property, but many of them are branch and have the $p$-congruence subgroup property, for a prime $p$. Among them, we find groups with maximal subgroups only of finite index, and with infinitely many such maximal subgroups. These give the first examples of finitely generated branch groups with infinitely many finite-index maximal subgroups. Additionally, we prove that congruence quotients of growing GGS-groups associated to a defining vector of zero sum give rise to Beauville groups.

Abstract:We conduct an in-depth investigation into the structure of the Bogomolov multiplier for groups of order p 7 ( p > 2) and exponent p . We present a comprehensive classification of these groups, identifying those with nontrivial Bogomolov multipliers and distinguishing them from groups with trivial multipliers. Our analysis not only clarifies the conditions under which the Bogomolov multiplier is nontrivial but also refines existing computational methods, enhancing the process of determining these multipliers for the specified class of p -groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an elementary abelian $p$-group. We calculate $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G]/I)$ for certain ideals $I \subseteq \mathbb{Z}[G]$ of the finite $p$-power index through computations of Dennis-Stein symbols. As an application, for $p$ an odd prime, we give a complete description of the relative group $SK_1(\mathbb{Z}[G],p^k\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and obtain more precise lower bounds of the prank of $K_2(\mathbb{Z}[G])$ and $Wh_2(G)$.

Sums of binomial coefficients modulo $p$ and groups of exponent $p^n$

Abstract:We give a simple matrix-based proof of congruence equations modulo a prime $p$ involving sums of binomial coefficients appearing in Pascal's triangle. These equations can be used to construct some groups of exponent $p^n$. These groups, as well as others of exponent $p^{n+1}$, explain why $p=2$ is not really an exceptional prime in relation to the Heisenberg group over the field with $p$ elements.

On Power Sums and the Kummer Congruences

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the stabilizers of certain multisets $\mod p^k$ with respect to their natural multiplicative action, completely describing them for a certain family of polynomials whenever $p$ is an odd prime. This elucidates an underlying structure on the level of elements that yields a new proof of the classical Kummer Congruences. Hence the Kummer Congruences can be viewed as a consequence of putting together this local information, the interactions between which are understood. This gives a new perspective in that all known approaches are based directly on global considerations, namely either through global sum identities or $p$-adic integrals.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new explanation of congruences of Eisenstein series of level $\Gamma_1(N)$ and character $\chi$. Our approach is based on Katz's algebro-geometric explanation of $p$-adic congruences of normalized Eisenstein series $E_{2k}$ of level $1$. One crucial step in our argument is to reformulate a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in Katz's explanation in terms of Dieudonné theory of height $1$ formal $A$-modules and their finite subgroup schemes. We give a generalization of this Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in terms of formal groups of height greater than $1$.

On the lower central series of a large family of non-periodic GGS-groups

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$, we determine the lower central series of a large family of non-periodic GGS-groups, which has a density of roughly $(\frac{p-1}{p})^2$ within all GGS-groups. This means a significant extension of the knowledge regarding the lower central series of distinguished classes of branch groups, which to date was basically restricted to the Grigorchuk group. As part of our results, we obtain the indices between consecutive terms of the lower central series, and we show that these groups, as well as their profinite completions, have lower central width equal to $2$. In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Bartholdi, Eick, and Hartung about the generalised Fabrykowski-Gupta groups.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field and $G$ a finitely generated torsion-free subgroup of $K^\times$. Given a prime $\mathfrak p$ of $K$ we denote by ${\rm ind}_{\mathfrak p}(G)$ the index of the subgroup $(G\bmod\mathfrak p)$ of the multiplicative group of the residue field at $\mathfrak p$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis we determine the natural density of primes of $K$ for which this index is in a prescribed set $S$ and has prescribed Frobenius in a finite Galois extension $F$ of $K$. We study in detail the natural density in case $S$ is an arithmetic progression, in particular its positivity.

On the $p$-ranks of class groups of certain Galois extensions

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.

Abstract:In this work, Ramanujan type congruences modulo powers of primes $p \ge 5$ are derived for a general class of products that are modular forms of level $p$. These products are constructed in terms of Klein forms and subsume generating functions for $t$-core partitions known to satisfy Ramanujan type congruences for $p=5,7,11$. The vectors of exponents corresponding to products that are modular forms for $\Gamma_{1}(p)$ are subsets of bounded polytopes with explicit parameterizations. This allows for the derivation of a complete list of products that are modular forms for $\Gamma_{1}(p)$ of weights $1\le k \le 5$ for primes $5\le p \le 19$ and whose Fourier coefficients satisfy Ramanujan type congruences for all powers of the primes. For each product satisfying a congruence, cyclic permutations of the exponents determine additional products satisfying congruences. Common forms among the exponent sets lead to products satisfying Ramanujan type congruences for a broad class of primes, including $p> 19$. Canonical bases for modular forms of level $5\le p \le 19$ are constructed by summing weight one Hecke Eisensten series of levels $5\le p \le 19$ and expressing the result as a quotient of Klein forms. Generating sets for the graded algebras of modular forms for $\Gamma_{1}(p)$ and $\Gamma(p)$ are formulated in terms of permutations of the exponent sets. A sieving process is described by decomposing the space of modular forms of weight $1$ for $\Gamma_{1}(p)$ as a direct sum of subspaces of modular forms for $\Gamma(p)$ of the form $q^{r/p}\Bbb Z[[q]]$. Since the relevant bases generate the graded algebra of modular forms for these groups, the weight one decompositions determine series dissections for modular forms of higher weight that lead to additional classes of congruences.

Abstract:For a prime number $p$, we consider its primorial $P:=p\#$ and $U(P):={\left(\mathbb{Z}/P\mathbb{Z}\right)}^\times$ the set of elements of the multiplicative group of integers modulo $P$ which we represent as points anticlockwise on a circle of perimeter $P$. These points considered with wrap around modulo $P$ are those not marked by the Eratosthenes sieve algorithm applied to all primes less than or equal to $p$. In this paper, we are concerned with providing formulas to count the number of gaps of a given even length $D$ in $U(P)$ which we note $K(D,P)$.

Bounding the $K(p-1)$-local exotic Picard group at $p>3$

Abstract:In this paper, we bound the descent filtration of the exotic Picard group $\kappa_n$, for a prime number p>3 and n=p-1. Our method involves a detailed comparison of the Picard spectral sequence, the homotopy fixed point spectral sequence, and an auxiliary $\beta$-inverted homotopy fixed point spectral sequence whose input is the Farrell-Tate cohomology of the Morava stabilizer group. Along the way, we deduce that the K(n)-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for the sphere has a horizontal vanishing line at $3n^2+1$ on the $E_{2n^2+2}$-page. The same analysis also allows us to express the exotic Picard group of $K(n)$-local modules over the homotopy fixed points spectrum $\mathrm{E}_n^{hN}$, where N is the normalizer in $\mathbb{G}_n$ of a finite cyclic subgroup of order p, as a subquotient of a single continuous cohomology group $H^{2n+1}(N,\pi_{2n}\mathrm{E}_n)$.

Abstract:We describe a generalization of the concept of a pc presentation that applies to groups with a nontrivial solvable radical. Such a representation can be much more efficient in terms of memory use and even of arithmetic, than permuattion and matrix representations. We illustrate the use of such representations by constructing a maximal subgroup of the sporadic monster group and calculating its -- hitherto unknown -- character table.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Consider an odd prime $p$ at which $E$ has good supersingular reduction with $a_p(E)=0$ and which is inert in $K$. Under the assumption that the signed Selmer groups are cotorsion modules over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we prove that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ are bounded over any subextensions of the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Additionally, we provide an asymptotic formula for the growth of the $p$-parts of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $E$ over these extensions.
