Abstract:For the data analysis problem of shock-ramp compression, i.e., ramp compression after a relatively strong initial shock, a characteristics-based method that strictly deals with the initial hydrodynamic shock is described in detail. Validation of this analysis method using simulated shock-ramp data generated by molecular dynamics and one-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic code is also presented.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to accurately process and analyze the flow - field data after the initial strong shock wave in the shock - ramp compression experiment. Specifically, traditional methods are suitable for pure ramp compression experiments without shock, but in shock - ramp compression, due to the existence of the initial shock, the entire flow field is no longer isentropic, so the traditional inversion calculation methods are no longer applicable. ### Main problems: 1. **Influence of the initial shock**: In shock - ramp compression, the initial shock wave makes the flow field no longer maintain isentropic characteristics, which leads to the fact that the traditional inversion calculation methods cannot be directly applied. 2. **Complexity of data processing**: A new method is required to strictly handle the initial shock and ensure that the subsequent inversion calculation can accurately reflect the actual physical process. ### Solutions: The author proposes an iterative inversion algorithm based on the method of characteristics, which is specifically used to process the shock - ramp compression experiment data containing the initial shock. The main features of this method include: - **Strict initial shock treatment**: By introducing an assumed linear relationship \( c_L = c_{LR}(1 + \beta a) \), the relationship between the sound speed in the release state and the Hugoniot state is approximately represented. - **Construction of the characteristic line network**: Using the method of characteristics, the characteristic line network in the flow field is gradually constructed, and by iteratively adjusting the relationship between the sound speed and the particle velocity, the accurate pressure and density distributions are finally obtained. - **Correction of the free - surface velocity**: In order to simulate the rarefaction wave effect in reality, the pre - shock free - surface velocity is manually set to \( U_H - a_H \), thus effectively handling the discontinuity in the free - surface velocity data. ### Verification results: The author uses six sets of simulation data generated by molecular dynamics simulation and one - dimensional radiation hydrodynamics code to verify the proposed algorithm. The results show that in most cases, the new method can significantly reduce the inversion error, especially when the initial shock can be regarded as a single hydrodynamic discontinuity. However, in some special cases (such as the existence of an obvious elastic - plastic double - wave structure), the effectiveness of this method will decrease. ### Conclusions: This paper provides an iterative inversion algorithm based on the method of characteristics, which can effectively handle the initial shock problem in shock - ramp compression experiments and improve the accuracy of data inversion. This method only depends on the free - surface velocity profile and the Hugoniot state parameters of the initial shock, and does not require external release curve data, so it has strong self - consistency and practicality.
