Abstract:We define a general formulation of quantum PCPs, which captures adaptivity and multiple unentangled provers, and give a detailed construction of the quantum reduction to a local Hamiltonian with a constant promise gap. The reduction turns out to be a versatile subroutine to prove properties of quantum PCPs, allowing us to show: (i) Non-adaptive quantum PCPs can simulate adaptive quantum PCPs when the number of proof queries is constant. In fact, this can even be shown to hold when the non-adaptive quantum PCP picks the proof indices simply uniformly at random from a subset of all possible index combinations, answering an open question by Aharonov, Arad, Landau and Vazirani (STOC '09). (ii) If the $q$-local Hamiltonian problem with constant promise gap can be solved in $\mathsf{QCMA}$, then $\mathsf{QPCP}[q] \subseteq \mathsf{QCMA}$ for any $q \in O(1)$. (iii) If $\mathsf{QMA}(k)$ has a quantum PCP for any $k \leq \text{poly}(n)$, then $\mathsf{QMA}(2) = \mathsf{QMA}$, connecting two of the longest-standing open problems in quantum complexity theory. Moreover, we also show that there exists (quantum) oracles relative to which certain quantum PCP statements are false. Hence, any attempt to prove the quantum PCP conjecture requires, just as was the case for the classical PCP theorem, (quantumly) non-relativizing techniques.

Abstract:We present a protocol that transforms any quantum multi-prover interactive proof into a nonlocal game in which questions consist of logarithmic number of bits and answers of constant number of bits. As a corollary, it follows that the promise problem corresponding to the approximation of the nonlocal value to inverse polynomial accuracy is complete for QMIP*, and therefore NEXP-hard. This establishes that nonlocal games are provably harder than classical games without any complexity theory assumptions. Our result also indicates that gap amplification for nonlocal games may be impossible in general and provides a negative evidence for the feasibility of the gap amplification approach to the multi-prover variant of the quantum PCP conjecture.
Classical versus quantum queries in quantum PCPs with classical proofs

Abstract:We generalize quantum-classical PCPs, first introduced by Weggemans, Folkertsma and Cade (TQC 2024), to allow for $q$ quantum queries to a polynomially-sized classical proof ($\mathsf{QCPCP}_{Q,c,s}[q]$). Exploiting a connection with the polynomial method, we prove that for any constant $q$, promise gap $c-s = \Omega(1/\text{poly}(n))$ and $\delta>0$, we have $\mathsf{QCPCP}_{Q,c,s}[q] \subseteq \mathsf{QCPCP}_{1-\delta,1/2+\delta}[3] \subseteq \mathsf{BQ} \cdot \mathsf{NP}$, where $\mathsf{BQ} \cdot \mathsf{NP}$ is the class of promise problems with quantum reductions to an $\mathsf{NP}$-complete problem. Surprisingly, this shows that we can amplify the promise gap from inverse polynomial to constant for constant query quantum-classical PCPs, and that any quantum-classical PCP making any constant number of quantum queries can be simulated by one that makes only three classical queries. Nevertheless, even though we can achieve promise gap amplification, our result also gives strong evidence that there exists no constant query quantum-classical PCP for $\mathsf{QCMA}$, as it is unlikely that $\mathsf{QCMA} \subseteq \mathsf{BQ} \cdot \mathsf{NP}$, which we support by giving oracular evidence. In the (poly-)logarithmic query regime, we show for any positive integer $c$, there exists an oracle relative to which $\mathsf{QCPCP}[\mathcal{O}(\log^c n)] \subsetneq \mathsf{QCPCP}_Q[\mathcal{O}(\log^c n)]$, contrasting the constant query case where the equivalence of both query models holds relative to any oracle. Finally, we connect our results to more general quantum-classical interactive proof systems.

Quasi-quantum states and the quasi-quantum PCP theorem

Abstract:We introduce $k$-local quasi-quantum states: a superset of the regular quantum states, defined by relaxing the positivity constraint. We show that a $k$-local quasi-quantum state on $n$ qubits can be 1-1 mapped to a distribution of assignments over $n$ variables with an alphabet of size $4$, which is subject to non-linear constraints over its $k$-local marginals. Therefore, solving the $k$-local Hamiltonian over the quasi-quantum states is equivalent to optimizing a distribution of assignment over a classical $k$-local CSP. We show that this optimization problem is essentially classical by proving it is NP-complete. Crucially, just as ordinary quantum states, these distributions lack a simple tensor-product structure and are therefore not determined straightforwardly by their local marginals. Consequently, our classical optimization problem shares some unique aspects of Hamiltonian complexity: it lacks an easy search-to-decision reduction, and it is not clear that its 1D version can be solved with dynamical programming (i.e., it could remain NP-hard). Our main result is a PCP theorem for the $k$-local Hamiltonian over the quasi-quantum states in the form of a hardness-of-approximation result. The proof suggests the existence of a subtle promise-gap amplification procedure in a model that shares many similarities with the quantum local Hamiltonian problem, thereby providing insights on the quantum PCP conjecture.

The Computational Advantage of MIP* Vanishes in the Presence of Noise

Abstract:Quantum multiprover interactive proof systems with entanglement MIP* are much more powerful than their classical counterpart MIP (Babai et al. '91, Ji et al. '20): while MIP = NEXP, the quantum class MIP* is equal to RE, a class including the halting problem. This is because the provers in MIP* can share unbounded quantum entanglement. However, recent works of Qin and Yao '21 and '23 have shown that this advantage is significantly reduced if the provers' shared state contains noise. This paper attempts to exactly characterize the effect of noise on the computational power of quantum multiprover interactive proof systems. We investigate the quantum two-prover one-round interactive system MIP*[poly, O(1)], where the verifier sends polynomially many bits to the provers and the provers send back constantly many bits. We show noise completely destroys the computational advantage given by shared entanglement in this model. Specifically, we show that if the provers are allowed to share arbitrarily many EPR states, where each EPR state is affected by an arbitrarily small constant amount of noise, the resulting complexity class is contained in NEXP = MIP. This improves significantly on the previous best-known bound of NEEEXP (nondeterministic triply exponential time) by Qin and Yao '21. We also show that this collapse in power is due to the noise, rather than the O(1) answer size, by showing that allowing for noiseless EPR states gives the class the full power of RE = MIP*[poly, poly]. Along the way, we develop two technical tools of independent interest. First, we give a new, deterministic tester for the positivity of an exponentially large matrix, provided it has a low-degree Fourier decomposition in terms of Pauli matrices. Secondly, we develop a new invariance principle for smooth matrix functions having bounded third-order Fréchet derivatives or which are Lipschitz continous.

Abstract:The Quantum Satisfiability problem (QSAT) is the generalization of the canonical NP-complete problem - Boolean Satisfiability. (k,s)-QSAT is the following variant of the problem: given a set of projectors of rank 1, acting non-trivially on k qubits out of n qubits, such that each qubit appears in at most s projectors, decide whether there exists a quantum state in the null space of all the projectors. Let f*(k) be the maximal integer s such that every (k,s)-QSAT instance is satisfiable. Deciding (k,f*(k))-QSAT is computationally easy: by definition the answer is "satisfiable". But, by relaxing the conditions slightly, we show that (k,f*(k)+2)-QSAT is QMA_1-hard, for k >=15. This is a quantum analogue of a classical result by Kratochvíl et al. [KST93]. We use the term "an almost sudden jump" to stress that the complexity of (k,f*(k)+1)-QSAT is open, where the jump in the classical complexity is known to be sudden. We present an implication of this finding to the quantum PCP conjecture, arguably one of the most important open problems in the field of Hamiltonian complexity. Our implications impose constraints on one possible way to refute the quantum PCP.

A bound on the quantum value of all compiled nonlocal games

Abstract:A cryptographic compiler introduced by Kalai et al. (STOC'23) converts any nonlocal game into an interactive protocol with a single computationally bounded prover. Although the compiler is known to be sound in the case of classical provers and complete in the quantum case, quantum soundness has so far only been established for special classes of games. In this work, we establish a quantum soundness result for all compiled two-player nonlocal games. In particular, we prove that the quantum commuting operator value of the underlying nonlocal game is an upper bound on the quantum value of the compiled game. Our result employs techniques from operator algebras in a computational and cryptographic setting to establish information-theoretic objects in the asymptotic limit of the security parameter. It further relies on a sequential characterization of quantum commuting operator correlations which may be of independent interest.

Complexity Theory for Quantum Promise Problems

Abstract:Quantum computing introduces many problems rooted in physics, asking to compute information from input quantum states. Determining the complexity of these problems has implications for both computer science and physics. However, as existing complexity theory primarily addresses problems with classical inputs and outputs, it lacks the framework to fully capture the complexity of quantum-input problems. This gap is relevant when studying the relationship between quantum cryptography and complexity theory, especially within Impagliazzo's five worlds framework, as characterizing the security of quantum cryptographic primitives requires complexity classes for problems involving quantum inputs. To bridge this gap, we examine the complexity theory of quantum promise problems, which determine if input quantum states have certain properties. We focus on complexity classes p/mBQP, p/mQ(C)MA, $\mathrm{p/mQSZK_{hv}}$, p/mQIP, and p/mPSPACE, where "p/mC" denotes classes with pure (p) or mixed (m) states corresponding to any classical class C. We establish structural results, including complete problems, search-to-decision reductions, and relationships between classes. Notably, our findings reveal differences from classical counterparts, such as p/mQIP $\neq$ p/mPSPACE and $\mathrm{mcoQSZK_{hv}} \neq \mathrm{mQSZK_{hv}}$. As an application, we apply this framework to cryptography, showing that breaking one-way state generators, pseudorandom states, and EFI is bounded by mQCMA or $\mathrm{mQSZK_{hv}}$. We also show that the average-case hardness of $\mathrm{pQCZK_{hv}}$ implies the existence of EFI. These results provide new insights into Impagliazzo's worlds, establishing a connection between quantum cryptography and quantum promise complexity theory. We also extend our findings to quantum property testing and unitary synthesis, highlighting further applications of this new framework.

Quantum soundness of the classical low individual degree test

Abstract: Low degree tests play an important role in classical complexity theory, serving as basic ingredients in foundational results such as $\mathsf{MIP} = \mathsf{NEXP}$ [BFL91] and the PCP theorem [AS98,ALM+98]. Over the last ten years, versions of these tests which are sound against quantum provers have found increasing applications to the study of nonlocal games and the complexity class~$\mathsf{MIP}^*$. The culmination of this line of work is the result $\mathsf{MIP}^* = \mathsf{RE}$ [JNV+20]. One of the key ingredients in the first reported proof of $\mathsf{MIP}^* = \mathsf{RE}$ is a two-prover variant of the low degree test, initially shown to be sound against multiple quantum provers in [Vid16]. Unfortunately a mistake was recently discovered in the latter result, invalidating the main result of [Vid16] as well as its use in subsequent works, including [JNV+20]. We analyze a variant of the low degree test called the low individual degree test. Our main result is that the two-player version of this test is sound against quantum provers. This soundness result is sufficient to re-derive several bounds on~$\mathsf{MIP}^*$ that relied on [Vid16], including $\mathsf{MIP}^* = \mathsf{RE}$.

Abstract:Recently, a standardized framework was proposed for introducing quantum-inspired moves in mathematical games with perfect information and no chance. The beauty of quantum games-succinct in representation, rich in structures, explosive in complexity, dazzling for visualization, and sophisticated for strategic reasoning-has drawn us to play concrete games full of subtleties and to characterize abstract properties pertinent to complexity consequence. Going beyond individual games, we explore the tractability of quantum combinatorial games as whole, and address fundamental questions including: Quantum Leap in Complexity: Are there polynomial-time solvable games whose quantum extensions are intractable? Quantum Collapses in Complexity: Are there PSPACE-complete games whose quantum extensions fall to the lower levels of the polynomial-time hierarchy? Quantumness Matters: How do outcome classes and strategies change under quantum moves? Under what conditions doesn't quantumness matter? PSPACE Barrier for Quantum Leap: Can quantum moves launch PSPACE games into outer polynomial space We show that quantum moves not only enrich the game structure, but also impact their computational complexity. In settling some of these basic questions, we characterize both the powers and limitations of quantum moves as well as the superposition of game configurations that they create. Our constructive proofs-both on the leap of complexity in concrete Quantum Nim and Quantum Undirected Geography and on the continuous collapses, in the quantum setting, of complexity in abstract PSPACE-complete games to each level of the polynomial-time hierarchy-illustrate the striking computational landscape over quantum games and highlight surprising turns with unexpected quantum impact. Our studies also enable us to identify several elegant open questions fundamental to quantum combinatorial game theory (QCGT).

Guidable Local Hamiltonian Problems with Implications to Heuristic Ansätze State Preparation and the Quantum PCP Conjecture

Abstract:We study 'Merlinized' versions of the recently defined Guided Local Hamiltonian problem, which we call 'Guidable Local Hamiltonian' problems. Unlike their guided counterparts, these problems do not have a guiding state provided as a part of the input, but merely come with the promise that one exists. We consider in particular two classes of guiding states: those that can be prepared efficiently by a quantum circuit; and those belonging to a class of quantum states we call classically evaluatable, for which it is possible to efficiently compute expectation values of local observables classically. We show that guidable local Hamiltonian problems for both classes of guiding states are $\mathsf{QCMA}$-complete in the inverse-polynomial precision setting, but lie within $\mathsf{NP}$ (or $\mathsf{NqP}$) in the constant precision regime when the guiding state is classically evaluatable. Our completeness results show that, from a complexity-theoretic perspective, classical Ansätze selected by classical heuristics are just as powerful as quantum Ansätze prepared by quantum heuristics, as long as one has access to quantum phase estimation. In relation to the quantum PCP conjecture, we (i) define a complexity class capturing quantum-classical probabilistically checkable proof systems and show that it is contained in $\mathsf{BQP}^{\mathsf{NP}[1]}$ for constant proof queries; (ii) give a no-go result on 'dequantizing' the known quantum reduction which maps a $\mathsf{QPCP}$-verification circuit to a local Hamiltonian with constant promise gap; (iii) give several no-go results for the existence of quantum gap amplification procedures that preserve certain ground state properties; and (iv) propose two conjectures that can be viewed as stronger versions of the NLTS theorem. Finally, we show that many of our results can be directly modified to obtain similar results for the class $\mathsf{MA}$.

Abstract:A central question in quantum information theory and computational complexity is how powerful nonlocal strategies are in cooperative games with imperfect information, such as multi-prover interactive proof systems. This paper develops a new method for proving limits of nonlocal strategies that make use of prior entanglement among players (or, provers, in the terminology of multi-prover interactive proofs). Instead of proving the limits for usual isolated provers who initially share entanglement, this paper proves the limits for "commuting-operator provers", who share private space, but can apply only such operators that are commutative with any operator applied by other provers. Obviously, these commuting-operator provers are at least as powerful as usual isolated but prior-entangled provers, and thus, limits in the model with commuting-operator provers immediately give limits in the usual model with prior-entangled provers. Using this method, we obtain an n-party generalization of the Tsirelson bound for the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, for every n. Our bounds are tight in the sense that, in every n-party case, the equality is achievable by a usual nonlocal strategy with prior entanglement. We also apply our method to a three-prover one-round binary interactive proof system for NEXP. Combined with the technique developed by Kempe, Kobayashi, Matsumoto, Toner and Vidick to analyze the soundness of the proof system, it is proved to be NP-hard to distinguish whether the entangled value of a three-prover one-round binary-answer game is equal to one or at most 1-1/p(n) for some polynomial p, where n is the number of questions. This is in contrast to the two-prover one-round binary-answer case, where the corresponding problem is efficiently decidable. Alternatively, NEXP has a three-prover one-round binary interactive proof system with perfect completeness and soundness 1-2^{-poly}.

Abstract:We present a classical interactive protocol that verifies the validity of a quantum witness state for the local Hamiltonian problem. It follows from this protocol that approximating the non-local value of a multi-player one-round game to inverse polynomial precision is QMA-hard. Our work makes an interesting connection between the theory of QMA-completeness and Hamiltonian complexity on one hand and the study of non-local games and Bell inequalities on the other.

Abstract:Significant advances in the development of computing devices based on quantum effects and the demonstration of their use to solve various problems have rekindled interest in the nature of the "quantum computational advantage." Although various attempts to quantify and characterize the nature of the quantum computational advantage have previously been made, this question largely remains open. Indeed, there is no universal approach that allows determining the scope of problems whose solution can be accelerated by quantum computers, in theory of in practice. In this paper, we consider an approach to this question based on the concept of complexity and reachability of quantum states. On the one hand, the class of quantum states that are of interest for quantum computing must be complex, i.e., not amenable to simulation by classical computers with less than exponential resources. On the other hand, such quantum states must be reachable on a practically feasible quantum computer. This means that the unitary operation that transforms the initial quantum state into the desired one must be decomposable into a sequence of one- and two-qubit gates of a length that is at most polynomial in the number of qubits. By formulating several statements and conjectures, we discuss the question of describing a class of problems whose solution can be accelerated by a quantum computer.

Bounding the quantum value of compiled nonlocal games: from CHSH to BQP verification

Abstract:We present a step towards the goal of producing a general cryptographic 'compilation' procedure which can translate any entangled nonlocal game into a single-prover interactive protocol while preserving quantum completeness and soundness, using cryptography to simulate the separation between the provers. A candidate for such a procedure was introduced by Kalai et al. (STOC '23), who defined a black-box cryptographic compilation procedure that applies to any nonlocal game and showed that it preserves classical value. In this work, we make progress towards a full understanding of the quantum value of the single-prover protocols that result from applying the Kalai et al. compilation procedure to entangled games. For the special case of CHSH, we prove that the Tsirelson bound holds under the compilation procedure introduced by Kalai et al., and we also recover a strong version of the 'rigidity' property that makes CHSH so useful. As an application, we give a single-prover cryptographically sound classical verification protocol for BQP, and we prove its soundness using our CHSH rigidity analysis. Our protocol replicates the functionality of Mahadev's protocol (FOCS '18) but with two advantages: (1) the protocol is conceptually intuitive and requires fewer bespoke ingredients, and the soundness analysis is simpler and directly follows the analysis of the nonlocal case, and (2) the soundness analysis does not explicitly use the assumption of a TCF or an adaptive hardcore bit, and only requires QFHE as a black box (though currently the only known constructions of QFHE use TCFs).

Abstract:Motivated by the inapproximability of reconfiguration problems, we present a new PCP-type characterization of PSPACE, which we call a probabilistically checkable reconfiguration proof (PCRP): Any PSPACE computation can be encoded into an exponentially long sequence of polynomially long proofs such that every adjacent pair of the proofs differs in at most one bit, and every proof can be probabilistically checked by reading a constant number of bits.

Abstract: A binary constraint system game is a two-player one-round non-local game defined by a system of Boolean constraints. The game has a perfect quantum strategy if and only if the constraint system has a quantum satisfying assignment [R. Cleve and R. Mittal, arXiv:1209.2729]. We show that several concepts including the quantum chromatic number and the Kochen-Specker sets that arose from different contexts fit naturally in the binary constraint system framework. The structure and complexity of the quantum satisfiability problems for these constraint systems are investigated. Combined with a new construct called the commutativity gadget for each problem, several classic NP-hardness reductions are lifted to their corresponding quantum versions. We also provide a simple parity constraint game that requires $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ EPR pairs in perfect strategies where $n$ is the number of variables in the constraint system.
A computational test of quantum contextuality, and even simpler proofs of quantumness

Abstract:Bell non-locality is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics whereby measurements performed on "spatially separated" quantum systems can exhibit correlations that cannot be understood as revealing predetermined values. This is a special case of the more general phenomenon of "quantum contextuality", which says that such correlations can occur even when the measurements are not necessarily on separate quantum systems, but are merely "compatible" (i.e. commuting). Crucially, while any non-local game yields an experiment that demonstrates quantum advantage by leveraging the "spatial separation" of two or more devices (and in fact several such demonstrations have been conducted successfully in recent years), the same is not true for quantum contextuality: finding the contextuality analogue of such an experiment is arguably one of the central open questions in the foundations of quantum mechanics. In this work, we show that an arbitrary contextuality game can be compiled into an operational "test of contextuality" involving a single quantum device, by only making the assumption that the device is computationally bounded. Our work is inspired by the recent work of Kalai et al. (STOC '23) that converts any non-local game into a classical test of quantum advantage with a single device. The central idea in their work is to use cryptography to enforce spatial separation within subsystems of a single quantum device. Our work can be seen as using cryptography to enforce "temporal separation", i.e. to restrict communication between sequential measurements. Beyond contextuality, we employ our ideas to design a "proof of quantumness" that, to the best of our knowledge, is arguably even simpler than the ones proposed in the literature so far.

Abstract:An open question in quantum complexity theory is whether or not the class $\operatorname{MIP}^{co}$, consisting of languages that can be efficiently verified using interacting provers sharing quantum resources according to the quantum commuting model, coincides with the class $coRE$ of languages with recursively enumerable complement. We introduce the notion of a qc-modulus, which encodes approximations to quantum commuting correlations, and show that the existence of a computable qc-modulus gives a negative answer to a natural variant of the aforementioned question.

Abstract:After the NP-hardness of computational problems such as 3SAT and MaxCut was established, a natural next step was to explore whether these problems remain hard to approximate. While the quantum extensions of some of these problems are known to be hard-indeed undecidable-their inapproximability remains largely unresolved. In this work, we introduce definitions for the quantum extensions of Label-Cover and Unique-Label-Cover. We show that these problems play a similarly crucial role in studying the inapproximability of quantum constraint satisfaction problems as they do in the classical setting.
