Abstract:We derive a class of space homogeneous Landau-like equations from stochastic interacting particles. Through the use of relative entropy, we obtain quantitative bounds on the distance between the solution of the N-particle Liouville equation and the tensorised solution of the limiting Landau-like equation.

Abstract:We derive the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for Maxwellian molecules from a natural stochastic interacting particle system. More precisely, we control the relative entropy between the joint law of the particle system and the tensorized law of the Landau equation. To obtain this, we establish as key tools the pointwise logarithmic gradient and Hessian estimates of the density function and also a new Law of Large Numbers result for the particle system. The logarithmic estimates are derived via the Bernstein method and the parabolic maximum principle, while the Law of Large Numbers result comes from crucial observations on the control of moments at the particle level.

Abstract:This work deals with the large time behaviour of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. Firstly, we obtain a bound from below of the entropy dissipation D(f) by weighted relative Fisher information of f with respect to the associated Maxwellian distribution, which leads to a variant of Cercignani’s conjecture thanks to a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Secondly, we prove the propagation of polynomial and stretched exponential moments with an at-most linearly growing in-time rate. As an application of these estimates, we show the convergence of any (H- or weak) solution to the Landau equation with Coulomb potential to the associated Maxwellian equilibrium with an explicitly computable rate, assuming initial data with finite mass, energy, entropy and some higher L 1-moment. More precisely, if the initial data have some (large enough) polynomial L 1-moment, then we obtain an algebraic decay. If the initial data have a stretched exponential L 1-moment, then we recover a stretched exponential decay.

Abstract:We consider a test particle moving in a random distribution of obstacles in the plane, under the action of a uniform magnetic field, orthogonal to the plane. We show that, in a weak coupling limit, the particle distribution behaves according to the linear Landau equation with a magnetic transport term. Moreover, we show that, in a low density regime, when each obstacle generates an inverse power law potential, the particle distribution behaves according to the linear Boltzmann equation with a magnetic transport term. We provide an explicit control of the error in the kinetic limit by estimating the contributions of the configurations which prevent the Markovianity. We compare these results with those ones obtained for a system of hard disks in \cite{BMHH}, which show instead that the memory effects are not negligible in the Boltzmann-Grad limit.

Abstract:Twenty years ago, Witten proposed a first order nonlinear PDE (Witten equation) as the replacement of Cauchy-Riemann equation in the Landau-Ginzburg setting. Several years ago, a comprehensive theory was developed by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan to solve Witten equation in the case of pure Landau-Ginzburg model. In this article, we describe several possible generalizations into tonic setting.

Abstract:We describe a time -dependent functional involving the relative entropy and the seminorm, which decreases along solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. The study of this monotone functional sheds light on the competition between dissipation and nonlinearity for this equation. It enables us to obtain new results concerning regularity/blowup issues for the Landau equation with Coulomb potential.

Abstract:The Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation perturbed by a space-dependent noise is a system of fourth order stochastic PDEs which models the evolution of magnetic spin fields in ferromagnetic materials at elevated temperatures, taking into account longitudinal damping, long-range interactions, and noise-induced phenomena at high temperatures. In this paper, we show the existence of a martingale solution (which is analytically strong) to the stochastic LLBar equation posed in a bounded domain $\mathscr{D}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $d=1,2,3$. We also prove pathwise uniqueness of the solution, which implies the existence of a unique probabilistically strong solution. Finally, we show the Feller property of the Markov semigroup associated with the strong solution, which implies the existence of invariant measures.

Mean field equations arising from random vortex dynamics

Abstract:We consider Mckean-Vlasov type stochastic differential equations with multiplicative noise arising from the random vortex method. Such an equation can be viewed as the mean-field limit of interacting particle systems with singular interacting kernels such as the Biot-Savart kernel. A new estimate for the transition probability density of diffusion processes will be formulated to handle the singularity of the interacting kernel. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of such SDEs will be established as the main result.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mean field limit of Brownian particles with Coulomb interaction in 3D space. In particular, using a symmetrization technique, we show that the limit measure almost surely is a weak solution to the limiting nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. By proving that the energy almost surely is bounded by the initial energy, we improve the regularity of the weak solutions. Moreover, by a natural assumption, we establish the weak strong uniqueness principle, which is closely related to the propagation of chaos.

Abstract:In this paper, the quantitative propagation of chaos for mean field interacting particle system with multiplicative noise in relative entropy is obtained, where the diffusion is distribution free, the interaction in the drift is bounded or Lipschitz continuous and the initial distribution of interacting particles is allowed to be singular with that of the limit equation. When the interaction in both the diffusion and drift is Lipschitz continuous, the quantitative propagation of chaos in $L^\eta$($\eta\in(0,1)$)-Wasserstein distance is proved, which seems to be the first result on quantitative propagation of chaos in $L^\eta$($\eta\in(0,1)$)-Wasserstein distance in the literature. Furthermore, the long time quantitative propagation of chaos in relative entropy as well as $L^2$(-Wasserstein distance is also derived under dissipative condition.

Abstract:This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, long time quantitative propagation of chaos in $L^1$-Wasserstein distance for mean field interacting particle system is derived, where the diffusion coefficient is allowed to be interacting and the drift is assumed to be partially dissipative. The main tool relies on reflection coupling, the gradient estimate of the decoupled SDEs, and the Duhamel formula for two semigroups associated to two time-inhomogeneous diffusion processes on $(\mathbb{R}^d)^N$. Moreover, the long time quantitative propagation of chaos in $L^\eta$($\eta\in(0,1)$)-Wasserstein distance is also obtained.

The Lake equation as a supercritical mean-field limit

Abstract:We study so-called supercritical mean-field limits of systems of trapped particles moving according to Newton's second law with either Coulomb/super-Coulomb or regular interactions, from which we derive a $\mathsf{d}$-dimensional generalization of the Lake equation, which coincides with the incompressible Euler equation in the simplest setting, for monokinetic data. This supercritical mean-field limit may also be interpreted as a combined mean-field and quasineutral limit, and our assumptions on the rates of these respective limits are shown to be optimal. Our work provides a mathematical basis for the universality of the Lake equation in this scaling limit -- a new observation -- in the sense that the dependence on the interaction and confinement is only through the limiting spatial density of the particles. Our proof is based on a modulated-energy method and takes advantage of regularity theory for the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian.

Abstract:This document presents an elementary approach using $\varepsilon$-Poincaré inequality to prove generation of $L^{p}$-bounds, $p\in(1,\infty)$, for the homogeneous Landau equation with moderate soft potentials $\gamma\in[-2,0)$. The critical case $\gamma=-2$ uses an interpolation approach in the realm of Lorentz spaces and entropy. Alternatively, a direct approach using the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) inequality and entropy is also presented. On this basis, the generation of pointwise bounds $p=\infty$ is deduced from a De Giorgi argument.

Abstract:We prove a lower bound for the entropy dissipation of the Landau equation with Coulomb potentials by a weighted Lebesgue norm $L^3_{-5/3}$. In particular, we enhance the weight exponent from $-5$, which was established by Desvillettes, to $-5/3$. Moreover, we prove that the weighted Lebesgue norm $L^3_{-5/3}$ is optimal for both exponents.

Abstract:In this work we derive a mathematical model for an open system that exchanges particles and momentum with a reservoir from their joint Hamiltonian dynamics. The complexity of this many-particle problem is addressed by introducing a countable set of n-particle phase space distribution functions just for the open subsystem, while accounting for the reservoir only in terms of statistical expectations. From the Liouville equation for the full system we derive a set of coupled Liouville-type equations for the n-particle distributions by marginalization with respect to reservoir states. The resulting equation hierarchy describes the external momentum forcing of the open system by the reservoir across its boundaries, and it covers the effects of particle exchanges, which induce probability transfers between the n- and (n+1)-particle distributions. Similarities and differences with the Bergmann-Lebowitz model of open systems (P.G.Bergmann, J.L. Lebowitz, Phys.Rev., 99:578--587 (1955)) are discussed in the context of the implementation of these guiding principles in a computational scheme for molecular simulations.

Local regularity for the space-homogeneous Landau equation with very soft potentials

Abstract:This paper deals with the space-homogenous Landau equation with very soft potentials, including the Coulomb case. This nonlinear equation is of parabolic type with diffusion matrix given by the convolution product of the solution with the matrix $a_{ij} (z)=|z|^\gamma (|z|^2 \delta_{ij} - z_iz_j)$ for $\gamma \in [-3,-2)$. We derive local truncated entropy estimates and use them to establish two facts. Firstly, we prove that the set of singular points (in time and velocity) for the weak solutions constructed as in [C. Villani, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 143 (1998), 273-307] has zero $\mathscr{P}^{m_\ast}$ parabolic Hausdorff measure with $m_\ast:= \frac72 |2+\gamma|$. Secondly, we prove that if such a weak solution is axisymmetric, then it is smooth away from the symmetry axis. In particular, radially symmetric weak solutions are smooth away from the origin.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a mean-field backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) driven by a Brownian motion and an independent Poisson random measure. Translating the splitting method introduced by Buckdahn, Li, Peng and Rainer [6] to BSDEs, the existence and the uniqueness of the solution $(Y^{t,\xi}, Z^{t,\xi}, H^{t,\xi})$, $(Y^{t,x,P_\xi}, Z^{t,x,P_\xi}, H^{t,x,P_\xi})$ of the split equations are proved. The first and the second order derivatives of the process $(Y^{t,x,P_\xi}, Z^{t,x,P_\xi}, H^{t,x,P_\xi})$ with respect to $x$, the derivative of the process $(Y^{t,x,P_\xi}, Z^{t,x,P_\xi}, H^{t,x,P_\xi})$ with respect to the measure $P_\xi$, and the derivative of the process $(\partial_\mu Y^{t,x,P_\xi}(y), \partial_\mu Z^{t,x,P_\xi}(y), \partial_\mu H^{t,x,P_\xi}(y))$ with respect to $y$ are studied under appropriate regularity assumptions on the coefficients, respectively. These derivatives turn out to be bounded and continuous in $L^2$. The proof of the continuity of the second order derivatives is particularly involved and requires subtle estimates. This regularity ensures that the value function $V(t,x,P_\xi):=Y_t^{t,x,P_\xi}$ is regular and allows to show with the help of a new It\^{o} formula that it is the unique classical solution of the related nonlocal quasi-linear integral-partial differential equation (PDE) of mean-field type.

Abstract:We shall present a new strategy for handling mean field limits of quantum mechanical systems. The new method is simple and effective. It is simple, because it translates the idea behind the mean field description of a many particle quantum system directly into a mathematical algorithm. It is effective because the strategy yields with lesser effort better results than previously achieved. As an instructional example we treat a simple model for the time dependent Hartree equation which we derive under more general conditions than what has been considered so far. Other mean field scalings leading e.g. to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can also be treated.
