Abstract:We establish a correspondence between solutions of Noth's equation, a non-linear ordinary differential equation that shows up in the theory of $(2,3,5)$-distributions, and diffeomorphisms of any contact structure of type $G_{2}$ to the standard one.

Abstract:We investigate the local geometry of a pair of independent contact structures on 3-manifolds under maps that independently preserve each contact structure. We discover that such maps are homotheties on the contact 1-forms and we discover differential invariants associated to such structures under these equivalences. This allows us to generalize the notion of contact circles and (equilateral) hyperbolas to contact ellipses and hyperbolas. Moreover, these invariants may sometimes be used to define a complete local normal form and in at least one case are related to symplectic structures through a natural $e$-structure on a bundle arising from the Cartan equivalence method. Finally, there is a type of natural Riemannian metric (but not necessarily the well-known associated contact metric) and we discover certain curvatures may be written in terms of the bi-contact differential invariants.

Abstract:We study generalized almost contact structures on odd-dimensional manifolds. We introduce a notion of integrability and show that the class of these structures is closed under symmetries of the Courant-Dorfman bracket, including T-duality. We define a notion of geometric type for generalized almost contact structures, and study its behavior under T-duality.

Abstract:A contact twisted cubic structure (M,C,S) is a 5-dimensional manifold M together with a contact distribution C and a bundle S of twisted cubics that is compatible with the conformal symplectic form on C. In Engel's classical work, the Lie algebra of the exceptional Lie group G_2 was realized as the symmetry algebra of the most symmetric contact twisted cubic structure; we thus refer to this one as the contact Engel structure. In the present paper we equip the contact Engel structure with a smooth section s: M-> S that `marks' a point in each twisted cubic. We study the local geometry of the resulting structures (M,C,S,s), which we call marked contact Engel structures. Equivalently, our study can be viewed as a study of foliations of M by curves whose tangent directions are everywhere contained in S. We provide a complete set of local invariants of marked contact Engel structures, we classify all homogeneous models with symmetry groups of dimension greater than 5, and we prove an analogue of the classical Kerr theorem from relativity.

Abstract:Based on a general formula due to <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://R.Bryant" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, we work out the topological structure of the space of torsion-free $G_2$-structures generating the same associated Riemannian metric on a compact $7$-manifold. We also identify a corresponding Lie group-theoretic structure of the space. These observations are then used to describe the moduli space of torsion-free $G_2$-structures in certain cases - by way of covering spaces.

Abstract:We classify Legendrian unknots in overtwisted contact structures on $S^3$. In particular, we show that up to contact isotopy for every pair $(n,\pm(n-1))$ with $n>0$ there are exactly two oriented non-loose Legendrian unknots in $S^3$ with Thurston-Bennequin invariant $n$ and rotation number $\pm(n-1)$. (Only one overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ admits a non-loose unknot $K$ and the classical invariants have to be $\mathrm{tb}(K)=n$ and $\mathrm{rot}(K)=\pm(n-1)$ for $n>1$.) This can be used to prove two results attributed to Y.~Che\-kan\-ov: The first implies that the contact mapping class group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ depends on the contact structure. The second result is that the identity component of the contactomorphism group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ does not always act transitively on the set of boundaries of overtwisted discs.

Abstract:We study integrability of generalized almost contact structures, and find conditions under which the main associated maximal isotropic vector bundles form Lie bialgebroids. These conditions differentiate the concept of generalized contact structures from a counterpart of generalized complex structures on odd-dimensional manifolds. We name the latter strong generalized contact structures. Using a Boothby-Wang construction bridging symplectic structures and contact structures, we find examples to demonstrate that, within the category of generalized contact structures, classical contact structures have non-trivial deformations. Using deformation theory of Lie bialgebroids, we construct new families of strong generalized contact structures on the three-dimensional Heisenberg group and its co-compact quotients.

Cohomogeneity one solitons for the isometric flow of $G_2$-structures

Abstract:We consider the existence of cohomogeneity one solitons for the isometric flow of $G_2$-structures on the following classes of torsion-free $G_2$-manifolds: the Euclidean $R^7$ with its standard $G_2$-structure, metric cylinders over Calabi-Yau 3-folds, metric cones over nearly Kähler 6-manifolds, and the Bryant-Salamon $G_2$-manifolds. In all cases we establish existence of global solutions to the isometric soliton equations, and determine the asymptotic behaviour of the torsion. In particular, existence of shrinking isometric solitons on $R^7$ is proved, giving support to the likely existence of type I singularities for the isometric flow. In each case, the study of the soliton equation reduces to a particular nonlinear ODE with a regular singular point, for which we provide a careful analysis. Finally, to simplify the derivation of the relevant equations in each case, we first establish several useful Riemannian geometric formulas for a general class of cohomogeneity one metrics on total spaces of vector bundles which should have much wider application, as such metrics arise often as explicit examples of special holonomy metrics.

Conformal structures with $G_2$-symmetric twistor distribution

Abstract:For any 4D split-signature conformal structure, there is an induced twistor distribution on the 5D space of all self-dual totally null 2-planes, which is $(2,3,5)$ when the conformal structure is not anti-self-dual. Several examples where the twistor distribution achieves maximal symmetry (the split-real form of the exceptional simple Lie algebra of type $\mathrm{G}_2$) were previously known, and these include fascinating examples arising from the rolling of surfaces without twisting or slipping. Relaxing the rolling assumption, we establish a complete local classification result among those homogeneous 4D split-conformal structures for which the symmetry algebra induces a multiply-transitive action on the 5D space. Furthermore, we discuss geometric properties of these conformal structures such as their curvature, holonomy, and existence of Einstein representatives.

Abstract:Active phenomena which involve force generation and motion play a key role in a number of phenomena in living cells such as cell motility, muscle contraction and the active transport of material and organelles. Here we discuss mechanical oscillations generated by active systems in cells. Examples are oscillatory regimes in muscles, the periodic beating of axonemal cilia and flagella and spontaneous oscillations of auditory hair cells which play a role in active amplification of weak sounds in hearing. As a prototype system for oscillation generation by proteins, we discuss a general mechanism by which many coupled active elements such as motor molecules can generate oscillations.

Abstract:We exploit a natural correspondence between holomorphic $(2,3,5)$-distributions and nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds of dimension $5$ to present a new perspective in the study of symmetries of $(2,3,5)$-distributions. This leads to a number of new results in this classical subject, including an unexpected relation between the multiply-transitive families of models having $7$- and $6$-dimensional symmetries, and a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of nontransitive $(2,3,5)$-distributions with $6$-dimensional symmetries and nonhomogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. An ingredient for establishing the former is an explicit classification of homogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$, which we present.

Abstract:We discuss some properties of the relative Gromov--Witten invariants counting rational curves with maximal contact order at one point. We compute the number of Cayley's sextactic conics to any smooth plane curve $Y$. In particular, we compute the contribution, from double covers of inflectional lines, to a certain degree $2$ relative Gromov--Witten invariant relative to $Y$.

Abstract:We discuss general properties of strong G$_2$-structures with torsion and we investigate the twisted G$_2$ equation, which represents the G$_2$-analogue of the twisted Calabi-Yau equation for SU$(n)$-structures introduced by Garcia-Fernández - Rubio - Shahbazi - Tipler. In particular, we show that invariant strong G$_2$-structures with torsion do not occur on compact non-flat solvmanifolds. This implies the non-existence of non-trivial solutions to the twisted Calabi-Yau equation on compact solvmanifolds of dimensions $4$ and $6$. More generally, we prove that a compact, connected homogeneous space admitting invariant strong G$_2$-structures with torsion is diffeomorphic either to $S^3 \times T^4$ or to $S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$, up to a covering, and that in both cases solutions to the twisted G$_2$ equation exist. Finally, we discuss the behavior of the homogeneous Laplacian coflow for strong G$_2$-structures with torsion on these spaces.

G$_2$-instantons on $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups

Abstract:We study the G$_2$-instanton condition for a family of metric connections arisen from the characteristic connection, on $7$-dimensional $2$-step nilpotent Lie groups with left-invariant coclosed G$_2$-structures. According to the dimension of the commutator subgroup, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the connection to be an instanton, in terms of the torsion of the G$_2$-structure, the torsion of the connection and the Lie group structure.Moreover, we show that in our setup, G$_2$-instantons define a naturally reductive structure on the simply connected $2$-step nilpotent Lie group with left-invariant Riemannian metric. Taking quotient by lattices, one obtains G$_2$-instantons on compact nilmanifolds.

Abstract:We explore three versions of the Laplacian coflow of $G_2$-structures on circle fibrations over Calabi--Yau 3-folds, interpreting their dimensional reductions to the Kähler geometry of the base. Precisely, we reduce Ansätze for the Laplacian coflow, modified or not by de Turck's trick, both on trivial products $CY^3\times S^1$ and on contact Calabi--Yau 7-manifolds, obtaining in each case a natural modification of the Kähler--Ricci flow.

Abstract:We show that the minimum rank of a non-isotrivial local system of geometric origin on a suitably general n n -pointed curve of genus g g is at least 2 g + 1 2\sqrt {g+1} . We apply this result to resolve conjectures of Esnault-Kerz and Budur-Wang. The main input is an analysis of stability properties of flat vector bundles under isomonodromic deformations, which additionally answers questions of Biswas, Heu, and Hurtubise.

Abstract:We consider left-invariant $G_2$-structures on $7$-dimensional almost Abelian Lie groups. Also, we characterise the associated torsion forms and the full torsion tensor according to the Lie bracket $A$ of the corresponding Lie algebra. In those terms, we establish the algebraic condition on $A$ for each of the possible $16$-torsion classes of a $G_2$-structure. In particular, we show that four of those torsion classes are not admissible, since $\tau_3=0$ implies $\tau_0=0$. Finally, we use the above results to provide the algebraic criteria on $A$, satisfying the harmonic condition $div T=0$, and this allows to identify which torsion classes are harmonic.

On Hitchin's equations for cyclic G-Higgs bundles

Abstract:We develop a Lie-theoretic perspective on Hitchin's equations for cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, which we use to study analytic and geometric properties of harmonic maps. Among other things, we prove Dai-Li's conjecture on the monotonicity of the energy density in the case of Coxeter cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, for all $G$, and Dai-Li's negative curvature conjecture for Coxeter cyclic $G$-Higgs bundles, for all $G$ except those of type $\mathrm{E}_7$ and $\mathrm{E}_8.$

Abstract:In this paper, by using the G(2)-structure on Im(O) congruent to R-7 from the octonions O, the G(2)-binormal motion of curves gamma(t, s) in R-7 associated to the almost complex structure on S-6 is studied. The motion is proved to be equivalent to Schrodinger flows from R-1 to S-6, and also to a nonlinear Schrodinger-type system (NLSS) in three unknown complex functions that generalizes the famous correspondence between the binormal motion of curves in R-3 and the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. Some related geometric properties of the surface Sigma in Im(O) swept by gamma(t, s) are determined.
Flows of $G_2$-structures, II: Curvature, torsion, symbols, and functionals

Abstract:We continue the investigation of general geometric flows of $G_2$-structures initiated by the third author in "Flows of $G_2$-structures, I." Specifically, we determine the possible geometric flows (up to lower order terms) of $G_2$-structures which are second order quasilinear, by explicitly computing all independent second order differential invariants of $G_2$-structures which are $3$-forms. There are four symmetric $2$-tensors and two vector fields. We do this by deriving explicit computational descriptions of the decompositions of the curvature and the covariant derivative of the torsion into irreducible $G_2$-representations, as well as the decomposition of the $G_2$-Bianchi identity into independent relations. We also show that these six tensors arise as leading order contributions to the Euler-Lagrange equations for the energy functionals of the four independent torsion components, and we establish a $G_2$-analogue of the classical block decomposition of the Riemann curvature operator on oriented $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Finally, we present a large class of geometric flows of $G_2$-structures which are directly amenable to a deTurck type trick to establish short-time existence and uniqueness, with no initial assumption on the torsion, vastly generalizing an earlier result of Weiss-Witt for the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy. This result is proved through a careful analysis of the principal symbols of the linearizations of these operators, establishing particular linear combinations for which one can prove that the failure of strict parabolicity is due precisely to the diffeomorphism invariance. A detailed introductory section on various foundational results of $G_2$-structure, several of which are not readily available in the literature, should be of wider interest and applicability.
