Abstract:We prove a dimension-free stability result for polydisc slicing due to Oleszkiewicz and Pelczyński (2000). Intriguingly, compared to the real case, there is an additional asymptotic maximiser. In addition to Fourier-analytic bounds, we crucially rely on a self-improving feature of polydisc slicing, established via probabilistic arguments.

Boundaries of open symplectic manifolds and the failure of packing stability

Abstract:A finite volume symplectic manifold is said to have "packing stability" if the only obstruction to symplectically embedding sufficiently small balls is the volume obstruction. Packing stability has been shown in a variety of cases and it has been conjectured that it always holds. We give counterexamples to this conjecture; in fact, we give examples that cannot be fully packed by any domain with smooth boundary nor by any convex domain. The examples are symplectomorphic to open and bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^4$, with the diffeomorphism type of a disc. The obstruction to packing stability is closely tied to another old question, which asks to what extent an open symplectic manifold has a well-defined boundary; it follows from our results that many examples cannot be symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact symplectic manifold with smooth boundary. Our results can be quantified in terms of the volume decay near the boundary, and we produce, for example, smooth toric domains that are only symplectomorphic to the interior of a compact domain if the boundary of this domain has inner Minkowski dimension arbitrarily close to $4$. The growth rate of the subleading asymptotics of the ECH spectrum plays a key role in our arguments. We prove a very general "fractal Weyl law", relating this growth rate to the Minkowski dimension; this formula is potentially of independent interest.

Abstract:We show that for the regular n-simplex, the 1-codimensional central slice that's parallel to a facet will achieve the minimum area (up to a 1-o(1) factor) among all 1-codimensional central slices, thus improving the previous best known lower bound (Brzezinski 2013) by a factor of $\frac{2\sqrt{3}}{e} \approx 1.27$. In addition to the standard technique of interpreting geometric problems as problems about probability distributions and standard Fourier-analytic techniques, we rely on a new idea, mainly \emph{changing the contour of integration} of a meromorphic function.

Abstract:We investigate various forms of (model-theoretic) stability for hypergraphs and their corresponding strengthenings of the hypergraph regularity lemma with respect to partitions of vertices. On the one hand, we provide a complete classification of the various possibilities in the ternary case. On the other hand, we provide an example of a family of slice-wise stable 3-hypergraphs so that for no partition of the vertices, any triple of parts has density close to 0 or 1. In particular, this addresses some questions and conjectures of Terry and Wolf. We work in the general measure theoretic context of graded probability spaces, so all our results apply both to measures in ultraproducts of finite graphs, leading to the aforementioned combinatorial applications, and to commuting definable Keisler measures, leading to applications in model theory.

Abstract:Univariate polynomials are called stable with respect to a circular region $\mathcal{A}$, if all of their roots are in $\mathcal{A}$. We consider the special case where $\mathcal{A}$ is a half-plane and investigate affine slices of the set of stable polynomials. In this setup, we show that an affine slice of codimension $k$ always contains a stable polynomial that possesses at most $2(k+2)$ distinct roots on the boundary and at most $(k+2)$ distinct roots in the interior of $\mathcal{A}$. This result also extends to affine slices of weakly Hurwitz polynomials. Subsequently, we apply these results to symmetric polynomials and varieties. Here we show that it is necessary and sufficient for a variety described by polynomials in few multiaffine polynomials to contain points in $\mathcal{A}^n$ with few distinct coordinates for its intersection with $\mathcal{A}^n$ being non-empty. This is at the same time a generalization of the degree principle to stable polynomials and a result similar to Grace-Walsh-Szegő's coincidence theorem on multiaffine symmetric polynomials.

Abstract:We prove a sharp quantitative version for the stability of the Sobolev inequality with explicit constants. Moreover, the constants have the correct behavior in the limit of large dimensions, which allows us to deduce an optimal quantitative stability estimate for the Gaussian log-Sobolev inequality with an explicit dimension-free constant. Our proofs rely on several ingredients such as competing symmetries, a flow based on continuous Steiner symmetrization that interpolates continuously between a function and its symmetric decreasing rearrangement, and refined estimates on the Sobolev functional in the neighborhood of the optimal Aubin--Talenti functions.

Abstract:Given a manifold with boundary, one can consider the space of subsurfaces of this manifold meeting the boundary in a prescribed fashion. It is known that these spaces of subsurfaces satisfy homological stability if the manifold has at least dimension five and is simply-connected. We introduce a notion of tangential structure for subsurfaces and give a general criterion for when the space of subsurfaces with tangential structure satisfies homological stability provided that the manifold is simply-connected and has dimension $n\geq 5$. Examples of tangential structures such that the spaces of subsurface with that tangential structure satisfy homological stability are framings or spin structures of their tangent bundle, or $k$-frames of the normal bundle provided that $k\leq n-2$. Furthermore we introduce spaces of pointedly embedded subsurfaces and construct stabilization maps, as well as prove homological stability for these. This is used to prove homological stability for spaces of symplectic subsurfaces.

On the Weisfeiler algorithm of depth-$1$ stabilization

Abstract:An origin of the multidimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm goes back to a refinement procedure of deep stabilization, introduced by B. Weisfeiler in a paper included in the collective monograph ``On construction and identification of graphs"(1976). This procedure is recursive and the recursion starts from an algorithm of depth-$1$ stabilization, which has never been discussed in the literature. A goal of the present paper is to show that a simplified algorithm of the depth-$1$ stabilization has the same power as the $3$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm. It is proved that the class of coherent configurations obtained at the output of this simplified algorithm coincides with the class introduced earlier by the third author. As an application we also prove that if there exist at least two nonisomorphic projective planes of order $q$, then the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the incidence graph of any projective plane of order $q$ is at least $4$.

Abstract:Given an embedded stable hypersurface in a four-dimensional symplectic manifold, we prove that it is stable isotopic to a $C^0$-close stable hypersurface with the following property: $C^\infty$-nearby hypersurfaces are generically unstable. This shows that the stability property is neither open nor generic, independently of the isotopy class of hypersurfaces and ambient symplectic manifold. The proof combines tools from stable Hamiltonian topology with techniques in three-dimensional dynamics such as partial sections, integrability and KAM theory. On our way, we establish non-density properties of Reeb-like flows and a generic non-integrability theorem for cohomologous Hamiltonian structures and volume-preserving fields in dimension three.

Abstract:We consider a range of geometric stability problems for hypersurfaces of spaceforms. One of the key results is an estimate relating the distance to a geodesic sphere of an embedded hypersurface with integral norms of the traceless Hessian operator of a level set function for the open set bounded by the hypersurface. As application, we give a unified treatment of many old and new stability problems arising in geometry and analysis. Those problems ask for spherical closeness of a hypersurface, given a geometric constraint. Examples include stability in Alexandroff's soap bubble theorem in space forms, Serrin's overdetermined problem, a Steklov problem involving the bi-Laplace operator and non-convex Alexandroff–Fenchel inequalities.

Abstract:Fixing two positive integers $d$ and $k$, a positive number $v$, and a positive integer $I$, we prove that the K-semistable domain of the log pair $(X, \sum_{j=1}^kD_j)$ is a rational polytope lying in the $k$-dimensional simplex $\overline{\Delta^k}$, where $X$ is a Fano variety of dimension $d$, $D_j\sim_\mathbb{Q} -K_X$, $(-K_X)^d=v$, $I(K_X+D_j)\sim 0$, and $(X, \sum_{j=1}^kc_jD_j)$ is a K-semistable log Fano pair for some $c_j\in [0,1)\cap \mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we show that there are only finitely many polytopes which may appear as the K-semistable domains for such log pairs. Based on this, we establish a wall crossing theory for K-moduli with multiple boundaries.
