Abstract:Future sixth-generation (6G) systems are expected to leverage extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technology, which significantly expands the range of the near-field region. The spherical wavefront characteristics in the near field introduce additional degrees of freedom (DoFs), namely distance and angle, into the channel model, which leads to unique challenges in channel estimation (CE). In this paper, we propose a new sensing-enhanced uplink CE scheme for near-field XL-MIMO, which notably reduces the required quantity of baseband samples and the dictionary size. In particular, we first propose a sensing method that can be accomplished in a single time slot. It employs power sensors embedded within the antenna elements to measure the received power pattern rather than baseband samples. A time inversion algorithm is then proposed to precisely estimate the locations of users and scatterers, which offers a substantially lower computational complexity. Based on the estimated locations from sensing, a novel dictionary is then proposed by considering the eigen-problem based on the near-field transmission model, which facilitates efficient near-field CE with less baseband sampling and a more lightweight dictionary. Moreover, we derive the general form of the eigenvectors associated with the near-field channel matrix, revealing their noteworthy connection to the discrete prolate spheroidal sequence (DPSS). Simulation results unveil that the proposed time inversion algorithm achieves accurate localization with power measurements only, and remarkably outperforms various widely-adopted algorithms in terms of computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed eigen-dictionary considerably improves the accuracy in CE with a compact dictionary size and a drastic reduction in baseband samples by up to 66%.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the channel estimation (CE) problem in near-field extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems for sixth-generation (6G) communication systems. Specifically, the paper proposes a novel sensing-enhanced uplink channel estimation scheme to tackle the following major issues: 1. **Channel Complexity in Near-Field Environments**: Due to the spherical wavefront characteristics of electromagnetic waves in near-field environments, two degrees of freedom—distance and angle—are introduced, making channel estimation more complex. 2. **Challenges Brought by Large-Scale Antenna Arrays**: The increase in the number of antennas in XL-MIMO systems not only increases the dimension of the channel matrix but also makes it impractical to deploy independent radio frequency (RF) links for each antenna element. Therefore, a hybrid analog and digital antenna architecture is usually adopted, but this method can only obtain low-dimensional baseband samples per time slot, further increasing the difficulty of high-dimensional channel reconstruction. 3. **Limitations of Existing Compressed Sensing Algorithms**: Traditional compressed sensing (CS)-based methods require a larger dictionary when dealing with near-field channels, leading to higher storage requirements. Additionally, due to the increased sparsity ratio of near-field channels, more pilot signals are needed to achieve satisfactory reconstruction accuracy. To address the above issues, the paper proposes a new sensing-enhanced channel estimation scheme with the following key features: - Using low-cost power sensors to measure the received electromagnetic wave power instead of traditional baseband samples. - Proposing a time-reversal algorithm that can accurately estimate the positions of user equipment (UE) and scatterers using only power measurements, significantly reducing computational complexity. - Designing a new dictionary based on the estimated position information, utilizing the eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) of the near-field transmission model, thereby achieving efficient and lightweight near-field channel estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed time-reversal algorithm can achieve accurate positioning using only power measurements and performs excellently in terms of computational complexity compared to widely adopted existing algorithms. Moreover, the proposed dictionary based on the discrete prolate spheroidal sequences (DPSS) significantly reduces the required number of baseband samples (by up to 66%) and the dictionary size (by up to 88%), thereby reducing storage requirements.
