Abstract:Combinatorial designs have been studied for nearly 200 years. 50 years ago, Cameron, Delsarte, and Ray-Chaudhury started investigating their q -analogs, also known as subspace designs or designs over finite fields. Designs can be defined analogously in finite classical polar spaces, too. The definition includes the m -regular systems from projective geometry as the special case where the blocks are generators of the polar space. The first nontrivial such designs for were found by De Bruyn and Vanhove in 2012, and some more designs appeared recently in the PhD thesis of Lansdown. In this article, we investigate the theory of classical and subspace designs for applicability to designs in polar spaces, explicitly allowing arbitrary block dimensions. In this way, we obtain divisibility conditions on the parameters, derived and residual designs, intersection numbers and an analog of Fisher's inequality. We classify the parameters of symmetric designs. Furthermore, we conduct a computer search to construct designs of strength , resulting in designs for more than 140 previously unknown parameter sets in various classical polar spaces over and .

Nontrivial $t$-designs in polar spaces exist for all $t$

Abstract:A finite classical polar space of rank $n$ consists of the totally isotropic subspaces of a finite vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ equipped with a nondegenerate form such that $n$ is the maximal dimension of such a subspace. A $t$-$(n,k,\lambda)$ design in a finite classical polar space of rank $n$ is a collection $Y$ of totally isotropic $k$-spaces such that each totally isotropic $t$-space is contained in exactly $\lambda$ members of $Y$. Nontrivial examples are currently only known for $t\leq 2$. We show that $t$-$(n,k,\lambda)$ designs in polar spaces exist for all $t$ and $q$ provided that $k>\frac{21}{2}t$ and $n$ is sufficiently large enough. The proof is based on a probabilistic method by Kuperberg, Lovett, and Peled, and it is thus nonconstructive.

Abstract:Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic forms and Hermitian forms, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://forms.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces. Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes. In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

Abstract:The theory of designs is an important branch of combinatorial mathematics. It is well-known in the theory of designs that a finite subset of a sphere is a tight spherical 1-design if and only if it is a pair of antipodal points. On the other hand, antipodal sets and 2-number for a Riemannian manifold are introduced by B.-Y. Chen and T. Nagano in 1982. An antipodal set is called a great antipodal set if its cardinality is equal to the 2-number. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a survey on important results in compact symmetric spaces with great antipodal sets as the designs. In the last two sections of this paper, we present some important applications of 2-number and great antipodal sets to topology and group theory.

Abstract:Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1903.07375" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.07375">1903.07375</a>, 2019).

Abstract:Even though Peltesohn proved that a cyclic (v,3,1)-design exists if and only if $v\equiv 1,3\pmod{6}$ as early as 1939, the problem of determining the spectrum of cyclic (v,k,1)-designs with k>3 is far from being settled, even for k=4. This paper shows that a cyclic (v,4,1)-design exists if and only if $v\equiv 1,4\pmod{12}$ and $v\not\in\{16,25,28\}$.

Abstract:Guruswami and Xing introduced subspace designs in 2013 to give the first construction of positive rate rank metric codes list-decodable beyond half the distance. In this paper we provide bounds involving the parameters of a subspace design, showing they are tight via explicit constructions. We point out a connection with sum-rank metric codes, dealing with optimal codes and minimal codes with respect to this metric. Applications to two-intersection sets with respect to hyperplanes, two-weight codes, cutting blocking sets and lossless dimension expanders are also provided.

Abstract:The group $PGL(2,q)$ acts $3$-transitively on the projective line $GF(q) \cup \{\infty\}$. Thus, an orbit of its action on the $k$-subsets of the projective line is the block set of a $3$-$(q+1,k,\lambda)$ design. We find the parameters of the designs formed by the orbit of a block of the form $\langle \theta^r \rangle$ or $\langle \theta^r \rangle \cup \{ 0\}$, where $\theta$ is a primitive element of $GF(q)$.

Abstract:We prove the existence conjecture for combinatorial designs, answering a question of Steiner from 1853. More generally, we show that the natural divisibility conditions are sufficient for clique decompositions of simplicial complexes that satisfy a certain pseudorandomness condition. As a further generalisation, we obtain the same conclusion only assuming an extendability property and the existence of a robust fractional clique decomposition.

Abstract:Cubature formulas and geometrical designs are described in terms of reproducing kernels for Hilbert spaces of functions on the one hand, and Markov operators associated to orthogonal group representations on the other hand. In this way, several known results for spheres in Euclidean spaces, involving cubature formulas for polynomial functions and spherical designs, are shown to generalize to large classes of finite measure spaces $(\Omega,\sigma)$ and appropriate spaces of functions inside $L^2(\Omega,\sigma)$. The last section points out how spherical designs are related to a class of reflection groups which are (in general dense) subgroups of orthogonal groups.

Abstract:A special function is a function either of special form or with a special property. Special functions have interesting applications in coding theory and combinatorial t-designs. The main objective of this paper is to survey t-designs constructed from special functions, including quadratic functions, almost perfect nonlinear functions, almost bent functions, bent functions, bent vectorial functions, and planar functions. These combinatorial designs are not constructed directly from such functions, but come from linear codes which are constructed with such functions. As a byproduct, this paper also surveys linear codes from certain special functions.

Abstract:The study of regular incidence structures such as projective planes and symmetric block designs is a well established topic in discrete mathematics. Work of Bruck, Ryser and Chowla in the mid-twentieth century applied the Hasse-Minkowski local-global theory for quadratic forms to derive non-existence results for certain design parameters. Several combinatorialists have provided alternative proofs of this result, replacing conceptual arguments with algorithmic ones. In this paper, we show that the methods required are purely linear-algebraic in nature and are no more difficult conceptually than the theory of the Jordan Canonical Form. Computationally, they are rather easier. We conclude with some classical and recent applications to design theory, including a novel application to the decomposition of incidence matrices of symmetric designs.

Complex spherical designs from group orbits

Abstract:We consider the general question of when all orbits under the unitary action of a finite group give a complex spherical design. Those orbits which have large stabilisers are then good candidates for being optimal complex spherical designs. This is done by developing the general theory of complex designs and associated (harmonic) Molien series for group actions. As an application, we give explicit constructions of some putatively optimal real and complex spherical t-designs.

Abstract:A $2$-$(v,k,\lambda)$ design is additive (or strongly additive) if it is possible to embed it in a suitable abelian group $G$ in such a way that its block set is contained in (or coincides with) the set of all the zero-sum $k$-subsets of $G$. Explicit results on the additivity or strong additivity of symmetric designs and subspace 2-designs are presented. In particular, the strong additivity of PG$_d(n,q)$, which was known to be additive only for $q=2$ or $d=n-1$, is always established.

Abstract:We give some new explicit examples of putatively optimal projective spherical designs. i.e., ones for which there is numerical evidence that they are of minimal size. These form continuous families, and so have little apparent symmetry in general, which requires the introduction of new techniques for their construction. New examples of interest include an 11-point spherical (3, 3)-design for R 3 , and a 12-point spherical (2, 2)-design for R 4 given by four Mercedes-Benz frames that lie on equi-isoclinic planes. We also give results of an extensive numerical study to determine the nature of the real algebraic variety of optimal projective real spherical designs, and in particular when it is a single point (a unique design) or corresponds to an infinite family of designs.

Abstract:We discuss the space VPS ( Q , H ) of ideals with Hilbert function H=(1,n,n,...) that are apolar to a full rank quadric Q . We prove that its components of saturated ideals are closely related to the locus of Gorenstein algebras and to the Slip component in border apolarity. We also point out an important error in [ Citation 20 ] and provide the necessary corrections.

Abstract:For finite classical groups acting naturally on the set of points of their ambient polar spaces, the symmetry properties of \emph{synchronising} and \emph{separating} are equivalent to natural and well-studied problems on the existence of certain configurations in finite geometry. The more general class of \emph{spreading} permutation groups is harder to describe, and it is the purpose of this paper to explore this property for finite classical groups. In particular, we show that for most finite classical groups, their natural action on the points of its polar space is non-spreading. We develop and use a result on tactical decompositions (an \emph{AB-Lemma}) that provides a useful technique for finding witnesses for non-spreading permutation groups. We also consider some of the other primitive actions of the classical groups.

Abstract:Classical block designs are important combinatorial structures with a wide range of applications in Computer Science and Statistics. Here we give a new abstract description of block designs based on the arrow category construction. We show that models of this structure in the category of matrices and natural numbers recover the traditional classical combinatorial objects, while models in the category of completely positive maps yield a new definition of quantum designs. We show that this generalizes both a previous notion of quantum designs given by Zauner and the traditional description of block designs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there exists a functor which relates every categorical block design to a quantum one.
