Abstract:Let $X$ be a Borel metric measure space such that each closed ball is of positive and finite measure. In this paper, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for averaging operators on a Banach function space $E(X)$ on $X$ to be compact. As a corollary, we show that the averaging operators on the Lorentz space $L^{p,q}(X)$ of $X$ is compact if and only if $X$ is bounded, in the case where $X$ is a doubling and Borel-regular metric measure space with some continuity between metric and measure.

Abstract:Suppose that (M,d,m) is an unbounded metric measure space, which possesses two geometric properties, called "isoperimetric property" and "approximate midpoint property", and that the measure m is locally doubling. The isoperimetric property implies that the volume of balls grows at least exponentially with the radius. Hence the measure m is not globally doubling. In this paper we define an atomic Hardy space H1(m), where atoms are supported only on "small balls", and a corresponding space BMO(m) of functions of bounded mean oscillation, where the control is only on the oscillation over small balls. We prove that BMO(m) is the dual of H1(m) and that an inequality of John-Nirenberg type on small balls holds for functions in BMO(m). Furthermore, we show that the Lp(m) spaces are intermediate spaces between H1(m) and BMO(m), and we develop a theory of singular integral operators acting on function spaces on M. Finally, we show that our theory is strong enough to give H1(m)-L1(m) and L1(m)-BMO(m) estimates for various interesting operators on Riemannian manifolds and symmetric spaces which are unbounded on L1(m) and on L\infty(m).

Abstract:We prove a new generalization of a theorem of Carleson, namely bounds for a generalized Carleson operator on doubling metric measure spaces. Additionally, we explicitly reduce Carleson's classical result on pointwise convergence of Fourier series to this new theorem. Both proofs are presented in great detail, suitable as a blueprint for computer verification using the current capabilities of the software package Lean. Note that even Carleson's classical result has not yet been computer-verified.

Regularity of sets of finite fractional perimeter and nonlocal minimal surfaces in metric measure spaces

Abstract:In the setting of a doubling metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$, we study regularity of sets whose characteristic functions belong to the Besov class $B^s_{1,1}(X)$. Following a result of Visintin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a sufficient condition for membership in $B^s_{1,1}(X)$ given in terms of the upper Minkowski codimension of the regularized boundary of the set. We also show that if the characteristic function of a set belongs to $B^s_{1,1}(X)$, then its measure theoretic boundary has codimension $s$ Hausdorff measure zero. To the best of our knowledge, this result is new even in the Euclidean setting. By studying certain fat Cantor sets, we provide examples illustrating that the converses of these results do not hold in general. In the doubling metric measure space setting, we then consider minimizers of the nonlocal perimeter functional $\mathcal{J}_\Omega^s$, extending the definition introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and prove existence, uniform density, and porosity results for minimizers.

Abstract:Let $(X,d,\mu)$ be a doubling metric measure space. We consider the behaviour of the fractional maximal function $M^\alpha$ for $0\leq \alpha<Q$, where $Q$ is the doubling dimension, acting on functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) and vanishing mean oscillation ($VMO$). For $\alpha>0$, we additionally assume that the space is bounded. We show that $M^\alpha$ is bounded from $BMO$ to $BLO$, a subclass of $BMO$, and maps $VMO$ to itself when $\mu$ has the annular decay property. We also show by means of examples that the action of $M^\alpha$ is not continuous on these function spaces.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of three classes of nonlocal functionals in complete metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality. We show that the limits of these nonlocal functionals are comparable to the total variation or the Sobolev semi-norm , which extends Euclidean results to metric measure spaces. In contrast to the classical setting, we also give an example to show that the limits are not always equal to the corresponding total variation even for Lipschitz functions.

Bounds for lacunary bilinear spherical and triangle maximal functions

Abstract:We prove $L^p\times L^q\rightarrow L^r$ bounds for certain lacunary bilinear maximal averaging operators with parameters satisfying the Hölder relation $1/p+1/q=1/r$. The boundedness region that we get contains at least the interior of the Hölder boundedness region of the associated single scale bilinear averaging operator. In the case of the lacunary bilinear spherical maximal function in $d\geq 2$, we prove boundedness for any $p,q\in (1,\infty]^2$, which is sharp up to boundary; we then show how to extend this result to a more degenerate family of surfaces where some curvatures are allowed to vanish. For the lacunary triangle averaging maximal operator, we have results in $d\geq 7$, and the description of the sharp region will depend on a sharp description of the Hölder bounds for the single scale triangle averaging operator, which is still open.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fixed metric space (possibly an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary) with an increasing sequence of distance functions and a uniform upper bound on diameter. When the metric space endowed with the pointwise limit of these distances is compact, then there is uniform and Gromov-Hausdorff (GH) convergence to this limit. When the metric space also has an integral current structure of uniformly bounded total mass (as is true for an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary that has a uniform bound on total volume), we prove volume preserving intrinsic flat convergence to a subset of the GH limit whose closure is the whole GH limit. We provide a review of all notions and have a list of open questions at the end. Dedicated to Xiaochun Rong.

Abstract:The symmetrized Asymptotic Mean Value Laplacian $\tilde{\Delta}$, obtained as limit of approximating operators $\tilde{\Delta}_r$, is an extension of the classical Euclidean Laplace operator to the realm of metric measure spaces. We show that, as $r \downarrow 0$, the operators $\tilde{\Delta}_r$ eventually admit isolated eigenvalues defined via min-max procedure on any compact locally Ahlfors regular metric measure space. Then we prove $L^2$ and spectral convergence of $\tilde{\Delta}_r$ to the Laplace--Beltrami operator of a compact Riemannian manifold, imposing Neumann conditions when the manifold has a non-empty boundary.

Abstract:Let $(\mathcal{X},d,\mu)$ be a metric measure space satisfying the so-called upper doubling condition and the geometrically doubling condition. Let $T$ be a Calderón-Zygmund operator with kernel satisfying only the size condition and some Hörmander-type condition, and $b\in\rm{\widetilde{RBMO}(\mu)}$ (the regularized BMO space with the discrete coefficient). In this paper, the authors establish the boundedness of the commutator $T_b:=bT-Tb$ generated by $T$ and $b$ from the atomic Hardy space $\widetilde{H}^1(\mu)$ with the discrete coefficient into the weak Lebesgue space $L^{1,\,\infty}(\mu)$. The boundedness of the commutator generated by the generalized fractional integral $T_\alpha\,(\alpha\in(0,1))$ and the $\rm{\widetilde{RBMO}(\mu)}$ function from $\widetilde{H}^1(\mu)$ into $L^{1/{(1-\alpha)},\,\fz}(\mu)$ is also presented. Moreover, by an interpolation theorem for sublinear operators, the authors show that the commutator $T_b$ is bounded on $L^p(\mu)$ for all $p\in(1,\infty)$.

Abstract:We prove new monotonicity properties for spectral radius, essential spectral radius, operator norm, Hausdorff measure of non-compactness and numerical radius of products and sums of weighted geometric symmetrizations of positive kernel operators on $L^2$. To our knowledge, several proved properties are new even in the finite dimensional case.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization for bounded geometry that we call bounded scale measure. We show that bounded scale measure is a coarse invariant unlike bounded geometry. We then show equivalent definitions for spaces with bounded scale measure and show other properties that spaces with bounded scale measure satisfy. From there, we generalize property A from uniformly discrete metric spaces to large scale spaces with bounded geometry. Lastly, we construct a definition for property A for large scale spaces with bounded scale measure and show that this definition of property A is a coarse invariant.

Abstract:The asymptotic mean value Laplacian - AMV Laplacian - extends the Laplace operator from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to metric measure spaces through limits of averaging integrals. The AMV Laplacian is however not a symmetric operator in general. In this paper therefore a symmetric version of the AMV Laplacian is considered, and focus lies on when the symmetric and non-symmetric AMV operators coincide. Besides Riemannian and 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds, we show that they are identical on a large class of metric measure spaces including locally Ahlfors regular spaces with vanishing metric-measure boundary. In addition, we study the context of weighted domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ where the two operators typically differ, and provide concrete formulae for these operators also at points where the weight vanishes.
