Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed hyperbolic surface and $M = \left ( 0,1 \right )$. Suppose $h$ is a Riemannian metric on $S$ with curvature strictly greater than $-1$, $h^{*}$ is a Riemannian metric on $S$ with curvature strictly less than $1$, and every contractible closed geodesic with respect to $h^{*}$ has length strictly greater than $2\pi$. Let $L$ be a measured lamination on $S$ such that every closed leaf has weight strictly less than $\pi$. Then, we prove the existence of a convex hyperbolic metric $g$ on the interior of $M$ that induces the Riemannian metric $h$ (respectively $h^{*}$) as the first (respectively third) fundamental form on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$ and induces a pleated surface structure on $S \times \left\{ 1\right\}$ with bending lamination $L$. This statement remains valid even in limiting cases where the curvature of $h$ is constant and equal to $-1$. Additionally, when considering a conformal class $c$ on $S$, we show that there exists a convex hyperbolic metric $g$ on the interior of $M$ that induces $c$ on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$, which is viewed as one component of the ideal boundary at infinity of $(M,g)$, and induces a pleated surface structure on $S \times \left\{ 0\right\}$ with bending lamination $L$. Our proof differs from previous work by Lecuire for these two last cases. Moreover, when we consider a lamination which is small enough, in a sense that we will define, and a hyperbolic metric, we show that the metric on the interior of M that realizes these data is unique.

Abstract:We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double-iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy.

Abstract:For any orientable finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold, this paper proves that the profinite isomorphism type of the fundamental group uniquely determines the isomorphism type of the first integral cohomology, as marked with the Thurston norm and the fibered classes; moreover, up to finite ambiguity, the profinite isomorphism type determines the isomorphism type of the fundamental group, among the class of finitely generated 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:We introduce and define "oriented framed measured lamination links" in a 3-manifold $M$. These generalize oriented framed links in 3-manifolds, and are confined to 2-dimensional improperly embedded subsurfaces of the 3-manifold. Just as some framed links bound Seifert surfaces, so also some framed lamination links bound 2-dimensional measured and oriented "Seifert laminations." We show that any lamination link which bounds a 2-dimensional Seifert lamination, bounds a "taut" Seifert lamination, i.e. one of maximum Euler characteristic, subject to the condition that the Seifert lamination is carried by an aspherical branched surface. This maximum Euler characteristic function is continuous on certain parametrized families of lamination links carried by a train track neighborhood. Taut Seifert laminations generalize minimal genus Seifert surfaces.

Abstract:We study surface subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$ acting convex cocompactly on $\mathbb R \textrm P^3$ with image in the coaffine group. The boundary of the convex core is stratified, and the one dimensional strata form a pair of bending laminations. We show that the bending data on each component consist of a convex $\mathbb R \textrm P^2$ structure and an affine measured lamination depending on the underlying convex projective structure on $S$ with (Hitchin) holonomy $\rho: \pi_1S \to \mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb R)$. We study the space $\mathcal {ML}^\rho(S)$ of bending data compatible with $\rho$ and prove that its projectivization is a sphere of dimension $6g-7$.

Convexity and rigidity of hypersurfaces in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

Abstract:We show that in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds $M^n$, $n\geq 3$, closed infinitesimally convex hypersurfaces $\Gamma$ bound convex flat regions, if curvature of $M^n$ vanishes on tangent planes of $\Gamma$. This encompasses Chern-Lashof-Sacksteder characterization of compact convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space, and some results of Greene-Wu-Gromov on rigidity of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. It follows that closed simply connected surfaces in $M^3$ with minimal total absolute curvature bound Euclidean convex bodies, as stated by M. Gromov in 1985. The proofs employ the Gauss-Codazzi equations, a generalization of Schur comparison theorem to CAT($k$) spaces, and other techniques from Alexandrov geometry outlined by A. Petrunin.

Abstract:We propose and investigate two types, the latter with two variants, of notions of partial hyperbolicity accounting for several classes of compact complex manifolds behaving hyperbolically in certain directions, defined by a vector subbundle of the holomorphic tangent bundle, but not necessarily in the other directions. We study several classes of examples, prove implications among these notions, give a sufficient criterion for the existence of an Ahlfors current and a sufficient criterion for partial hyperbolicity in terms of the signs of two curvature-like objects introduced recently by the second-named author.

Abstract:A representation of a finitely generated group into the projective general linear group is called convex co-compact if it has finite kernel and its image acts convex co-compactly on a properly convex domain in real projective space. We prove that the fundamental group of a closed irreducible orientable 3-manifold can admit such a representation only when the manifold is geometric (with Euclidean, Hyperbolic, or Euclidean $\times$ Hyperbolic geometry) or when every component in the geometric decomposition is hyperbolic. In each case, we describe the structure of such examples.

Abstract:Let $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$ be two bounded measured laminations on the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb H^2$, which "strongly fill" (definition below). We consider the left earthquakes along $\lambda_-$ and $\lambda_+$, considered as maps from the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$ to itself, and we prove that the composition of those left earthquakes has a fixed point. The proof uses anti-de Sitter geometry. Given a quasi-symmetric homeomorphism $u:{\mathbb RP}^1\to {\mathbb RP}^1$, the boundary of the convex hull in $AdS^3$ of its graph in ${\mathbb RP}^1\times{\mathbb RP}^1\simeq \partial AdS^3$ is the disjoint union of two embedded copies of the hyperbolic plane, pleated along measured geodesic laminations. Our main result is that any pair of bounded measured laminations that "strongly fill" can be obtained in this manner.

Abstract:In this paper we consider convex co-compact subgroups of the projective linear group. We prove that such a group is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two if and only if each open face in the ideal boundary has dimension at most one. We also introduce the "coarse Hilbert dimension" of a subset of a convex set and use it to characterize when a naive convex co-compact subgroup is word hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.

Abstract:The electronic properties of disordered systems have been the subject of intense study for several decades. Thermoelectric properties, such as thermopower and thermal conductivity, have been relatively neglected. A long standing problem is represented by the sign of the thermoelectric power. In crystalline semiconductors this is related to the sign of the majority carriers, but in non-crystalline systems it is commonly observed to change sign at low temperatures. In spite of its apparent universality this change has been interpreted in a variety of ways in different systems. We have developed a Green's function recursion algorithm based on the Chester-Thelling-Kubo-Greenwood formula for calculating the kinetic coefficients on long strips or bars. From these we can deduce the electrical conductivity, the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients and the thermal conductivity, as well as the Lorenz number. We present initial results for 1D systems. We observe a Lorentzian distribution for the thermopower which is modified by the presence of inelastic scattering. This could give rise to non-negligible quantum fluctuations in macroscopic systems at low temperatures.

Abstract:An origami manifold is a manifold equipped with a closed 2-form which is symplectic except on a hypersurface where it is like the pullback of a symplectic form by a folding map and its kernel fibrates with oriented circle fibers over a compact base. We can move back and forth between origami and symplectic manifolds using cutting (unfolding) and radial blow-up (folding), modulo compatibility conditions. We prove an origami convexity theorem for hamiltonian torus actions, classify toric origami manifolds by polyhedral objects resembling paper origami and discuss examples. We also prove a cobordism result and compute the cohomology of a special class of origami manifolds.

Abstract:A long-standing conjecture in complex geometry says that a compact Hermitian manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature must be K\"ahler when the constant is non-zero and must be Chern flat when the constant is zero. The conjecture is known in complex dimension $2$ by the work of Balas-Gauduchon in 1985 (when the constant is zero or negative) and by Apostolov-Davidov-Muskarov in 1996 (when the constant is positive). For higher dimensions, the conjecture is still largely unknown. In this article, we restrict ourselves to pluriclosed manifolds, and confirm the conjecture for the special case of Strominger K\"ahler-like manifolds, namely, for Hermitian manifolds whose Strominger connection (also known as Bismut connection) obeys all the K\"ahler symmetries.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Profinite almost rigidity in 3-manifolds

Abstract:We prove that any compact, orientable 3-manifold with empty or incompressible toral boundary is profinitely almost rigid among all compact, orientable, boundary-incompressible 3-manifolds, i.e. the profinite completion of its fundamental group determines its homeomorphism type up to finitely many possibilities. Moreover, the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a mixed 3-manifold, together with the peripheral structure, uniquely determines the homeomorphism type of its Seifert part (i.e. the maximal graph manifold components in the JSJ-decomposition). On the other hand, without assigning the peripheral structure, the profinite completion of a mixed 3- manifold group may not even determine the fundamental group of its Seifert part. The proof is based on JSJ-decomposition.

Abstract:We show that except for one exceptional case, a lamination on the boundary of a 3-dimensional handlebody H is a Hausdorff limit of meridians if and only if it is commensurable to a lamination with a 'homoclinic leaf'. This is a precise version of a philosophy called Casson's Criterion, which appeared in unpublished notes of A. Casson. Applications include a characterization of when a non-minimal lamination is a Hausdorff limit of meridians, in terms of properties of its minimal components, and a related characterization of which reducible self-homeomorphisms of the boundary of H have powers that extend to subcompressionbodies of H.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that Gromov-Thurston's principle works for hyperbolic 3-manifolds of infinite volume and with finitely generated fundamental group.
