Abstract:Various authors have calculated how many pairwise incomparable points can be selected from a partially ordered set. We tackle this question for the family of subsets of a finite set obtained by removing or adding a bounded number of elements from a given subset. Our versatile approach is proven valid under the condition of the set size exceeding the cube of the radius.

Abstract:The width of a poset is the size of its largest antichain. Sperner's theorem states that $(2^{[n]},\subset)$ is a poset whose width equals the size of its largest layer. We show that Hamming ball posets also have this property. This extends earlier work that proves this in the case of small radii. Our proof is inspired by (and corrects) a result of Harper.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an $n$-element point set in the $k$-dimensional unit cube $[0,1]^k$ where $k \geq 2$. According to an old result of Bollobás and Meir (1992), there exists a cycle (tour) $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n$ through the $n$ points, such that $\left(\sum_{i=1}^n |x_i - x_{i+1}|^k \right)^{1/k} \leq c_k$, where $|x-y|$ is the Euclidean distance between $x$ and $y$, and $c_k$ is an absolute constant that depends only on $k$, where $x_{n+1} \equiv x_1$. From the other direction, for every $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq 2$, there exist $n$ points in $[0,1]^k$, such that their shortest tour satisfies $\left(\sum_{i=1}^n |x_i - x_{i+1}|^k \right)^{1/k} = 2^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$. For the plane, the best constant is $c_2=2$ and this is the only exact value known. Bollob{á}s and Meir showed that one can take $c_k = 9 \left(\frac23 \right)^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$ for every $k \geq 3$ and conjectured that the best constant is $c_k = 2^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$, for every $k \geq 2$. Here we significantly improve the upper bound and show that one can take $c_k = 3 \sqrt5 \left(\frac23 \right)^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$ or $c_k = 2.91 \sqrt{k} \ (1+o_k(1))$. Our bounds are constructive. We also show that $c_3 \geq 2^{7/6}$, which disproves the conjecture for $k=3$. Connections to matching problems, power assignment problems, related problems, including algorithms, are discussed in this context. A slightly revised version of the Bollobás--Meir conjecture is proposed.

The Helly number of Hamming balls and related problems

Abstract:We prove the following variant of Helly's classical theorem for Hamming balls with a bounded radius. For $n>t$ and any (finite or infinite) set $X$, if in a family of Hamming balls of radius $t$ in $X^n$, every subfamily of at most $2^{t+1}$ balls have a common point, so do all members of the family. This is tight for all $|X|>1$ and all $n>t$. The proof of the main result is based on a novel variant of the so-called dimension argument, which allows one to prove upper bounds that do not depend on the dimension of the ambient space. We also discuss several related questions and connections to problems and results in extremal finite set theory and graph theory.

Abstract:We prove a tight colorful dimension-free Tverberg theorem asserting that for any pairwise disjoint $k$-point sets $Q_1,\dots, Q_r$ in the Euclidean space, there are a partition of the union $Q_1\cup\dots \cup Q_r$ into $r$-point subsets $P_1,\dots, P_k$ and a ball of radius $$ \frac{\mathrm{max}_{1\leq i\leq k}\mathrm{diam} P_i}{\sqrt{2r}} $$ such that each $P_i$ shares with each $Q_j$ exactly one point and the ball intersects the convex hulls of $P_i$.

About almost covering subsets of the hypercube

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and consider the hypercube $\{ 0, 1 \}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}^{n}$. Sziklai and Weiner (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 2022) showed that if a polynomial $P ( X_{1}, \dots, X_{n} ) \in \mathbb{F}[ X_{1}, \dots, X_{n}]$ vanishes on every point of the hypercube $\{0,1\}^{n}$ except those with at most $r$ many ones then the degree of the polynomial will be at least $n-r$. This is a generalization of Alon and Füredi's fundamental result (European Journal of Combinatorics 1993) about polynomials vanishing on every point of the hypercube except at the origin (point with all zero coordinates). Sziklai and Weiner proved their interesting result using Möbius inversion formula and the Zeilberger method for proving binomial equalities. In this short note, we show that a stronger version of Sziklai and Weiner's result can be derived directly from Alon and Füredi's result.

Tight Bounds for the Maximum Distance Over a Polytope to a Given Point

Abstract:In this paper we study the problem of maximizing the distance to a given point $C_0$ over a polytope $\mathcal{P}$. Assuming that the polytope is circumscribed by a known ball we construct an intersection of balls which preserves the vertices of the polytope on the boundary of this ball, and show that the intersection of balls approximates the polytope arbitrarily well. Then, we use some known results regarding the maximization of distances to a given point over an intersection of balls to create a new polytope which preserves the maximizers to the original problem. Next, a new intersection of balls is obtained in a similar fashion, and as such, after a finite number of iterations, we conjecture, we end up with an intersection of balls over which we can maximize the distance to the given point. The obtained distance is shown to be a non trivial upper bound to the original distance. Tests are made with maximizing the distance to a random point over the unit hypercube up to dimension $n = 100$. Several detailed 2-d examples are also shown.

Abstract:Denote by Q_d the d-dimensional hypercube. Addressing a recent question we estimate the number of ways the vertex set of Q_d can be partitioned into vertex disjoint smaller cubes. Among other results, we prove that the asymptotic order of this function is not much larger than the number of perfect matchings of Q_d. We also describe several new (and old) questions.

Abstract:The amount of hyperplanes that are needed in order to cover the Boolean cube has been studied in various contexts. Linial and Radhakrishnan introduced the notion of essential covers. An essential cover is a collection of hyperplanes that form a minimal cover of the vertices of the hypercube, and every coordinate is influential in at least one of the hyperplanes. Linial and Radhakrishnan proved using algebraic tools that every essential cover of the n -cube must be of size at least . We devise a stronger lower bound method, and show that the size of every essential cover is at least . This result has implications in proof complexity, because essential covers have been used to prove lower bounds for several proof systems.

On the 1-density of Unit Ball Covering

Abstract:Motivated by modern applications like image processing and wireless sensor networks, we consider a variation of the famous Kepler Conjecture. Given any infinite set of unit balls covering the whole space, we want to know the optimal (lim sup) density of the volume which is covered by exactly one ball (i.e., the maximum such density over all unit ball covers, called the {\em optimal 1-density} and denoted as $\delta_d$, where $d$ is the dimension of the Euclidean space). We prove that in 2D the optimal 1-density $\delta_2=(3\sqrt(3)-\pi)/\pi \approx 0.6539$, which is achieved through a regular hexagonal covering. In 3D, the problem is widely open and we present a Dodecehadral Cover Conjecture which states that the optimal 1-density in 3D, $\delta_3$, is bounded from above by the 1-density of a unit ball whose Voronoi polyhedron is a regular dodecahedron of circum-radius one (determined by 12 extra unit balls). We show numerically that this 1-density $\delta_3(dc)\approx 0.315$.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the sizes of two sets $B, S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ when $B$ contains either the whole boundary, or the four vertices, of a square with axes-parallel sides and center in every point of $S$, where size refers to one of cardinality, Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, or upper or lower box dimension. Perhaps surprinsingly, the results vary depending on the notion of size under consideration. For example, we construct a compact set $B$ of Hausdorff dimension $1$ which contains the boundary of an axes-parallel square with center in every point $[0,1]^2$, but prove that such a $B$ must have packing and lower box dimension at least $\tfrac{7}{4}$, and show by example that this is sharp. For more general sets of centers, the answers for packing and box counting dimensions also differ. These problems are inspired by the analogous problems for circles that were investigated by Bourgain, Marstrand and Wolff, among others.

Abstract:We describe the eigenvalues and the eigenspaces of the adjacency matrices of subgraphs of the Hamming cube induced by Hamming balls, and more generally, by a union of adjacent concentric Hamming spheres. As a corollary, we extend the range of cardinalities of subsets of the Hamming cube for which Hamming balls have essentially the largest maximal eigenvalue (among all subsets of the same size). We show that this holds even when the sets in question are large, with cardinality which is an arbitrary subconstant fraction of the whole cube.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to address some classical questions concerning the size and structure of integer distance sets. Our main result is that any integer distance set in the Euclidean plane has all but a very small number of points lying on a single line or circle. From this, we deduce a near-optimal lower bound on the diameter of any non-collinear integer distance set of size $n$ and a strong upper bound on the size of any integer distance set in $[-N,N]^2$ with no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Abstract:In this survey, we discuss volumetric and combinatorial results concerning (mostly finite) intersections or unions of balls (mostly of equal radii) in the $d$-dimensional real vector space, mostly equipped with the Euclidean norm. Our first topic is the Kneser-Poulsen Conjecture, according to which if a finite number of unit balls are rearranged so that the pairwise distances of the centers increase, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) increases (resp., decreases). Next, we discuss Blaschke-Santaló type, and isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets in Euclidean $d$-space obtained as intersections of (possibly infinitely many) unit balls, which we call spindle convex sets. We present some results on spindle convex sets in the plane, with special attention paid to their approximation by the spindle convex hull of a finite subset. A ball-polyhedron is a convex body obtained as the intersection of finitely many unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space. We consider the combinatorial structure of their faces, and volumetric properties of ball polyhedra obtained from choosing the centers of the balls randomly.

Online Hitting of Unit Balls and Hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ using Points from $\mathbb{Z}^d$

Abstract:We consider the online hitting set problem for the range space $\Sigma=(\cal X,\cal R)$, where the point set $\cal X$ is known beforehand, but the set $\cal R$ of geometric objects is not known in advance. Here, objects from $\cal R$ arrive one by one. The objective of the problem is to maintain a hitting set of the minimum cardinality by taking irrevocable decisions. In this paper, we consider the problem when objects are unit balls or unit hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and the points from $\mathbb{Z}^d$ are used for hitting them. First, we address the case when objects are unit intervals in $\mathbb{R}$ and present an optimal deterministic algorithm with a competitive ratio of~$2$. Then, we consider the case when objects are unit balls. For hitting unit balls in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$, we present $4$ and $14$-competitive deterministic algorithms, respectively. On the other hand, for hitting unit balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we propose an $O(d^4)$-competitive deterministic algorithm, and we demonstrate that}, for $d<4$, the competitive ratio of any deterministic algorithm is at least $d+1$. In the end, we explore the case where objects are unit hypercubes. For hitting unit hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$, we obtain $4$ and $8$-competitive deterministic algorithms, respectively. For hitting unit hypercubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geq 3$), we present an $O(d^2)$-competitive randomized algorithm. Furthermore, we prove that the competitive ratio of any deterministic algorithm for the problem is at least $d+1$ for any $d\in\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:Let be a finite set of integer points in , which we assume has many symmetries, and let be a fixed point. We calculate the distances from P to the points in and compare the results. In some of the most common cases, we find that they lead to unexpected conclusions if the dimension is sufficiently large. For example, if is the set of vertices of a hypercube in and P is any point inside, then almost all triangles PAB with are almost equilateral. Or, if P is close to the center of the cube, then almost all triangles PAB with and B anywhere in the hypercube are almost right triangles.

Abstract:In this paper the problem of maximizing the distance to a given fixed point over an intersection of balls is considered. It is known that this problem is NP complete in the general case, since any subset sum problem can be solved upon solving a maximization of the distance over an intersection of balls to a point inside the convex hull. The general context is: in [1] it is shown that exists a polynomial algorithm which always solves the maximization problem if the given point is outside the convex hull of the centers of the balls. Naturally one asks if there is a polynomial algorithm which solves the problem for a point inside the convex hull. A conjecture stated in a previous paper, [1] is proved, under slightly stronger conditions. The proven conjecture allows a polynomial algorithm for points on the facets of the convex hull and shows that such points share the maximizer with all the points in a small enough ball centered at it, thus including points in the interior of the convex hull of the ball centers.
