Abstract:In a paper from twenty years ago, Brown and Myers proved the clean and uniform result that if m > 1 is an integer, then every curve of the form y 2 = x 3 − x + m 2 has Mordell-Weil rank at least 2. In this article, we further our investigation into the more general family of curves, in which the polynomial x 3 − x is replaced by an arbitrary cubic which is squarefree and has three integral roots. In particular, a new strategy will unveil a subfamily of curves with surprisingly large average rank, and one startling example.

Curvatures of Moduli Space of Curves and Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.
Constructing curves of high rank via composite polynomials

Abstract:Let $k$ be a number field. We refine a construction of Mestre--Shioda to construct (infinite) families of hyperelliptic curves $X/{k}$ having a record number of rational points and record Mordell--Weil rank relative to the genus of $g$ of $X$. Over $k=\mathbb{Q}$, we obtain modest improvements on the current published records, and these improvements become more significant as $k$ gets larger. For example, we obtain curves over the real cyclotomic field $k = \mathbb{Q}(\cos(\pi/(g+1)))$ having at least $16(g+1)$ $k$-points and rank at least $8g$. The defining equations for the curves are closely related to the classical Chebyshev polynomials, and in special cases, we recover families studied (for example) by Mestre, Shioda, Brumer, and Tautz--Top--Verberkmoes.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Abstract:In 1922, Mordell conjectured that the set of rational points on a smooth curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $g \ge 2$ is finite. This has been proved by Faltings in 1983. However, Coleman determined in 1985 an upper bound of $#C(\mathbb{Q})$ by following Chabauty's approach which considers the special case when the Jacobian variety of $C$ has Mordell-Weil rank $< g$. In 2006, Stoll improved the Coleman's bound. Balakrishnan with her co-authors in [1] implemented the Chabauty-Coleman method to compute the rational points of genus $3$ hyperelliptic curves. Then, Hashimoto and Morrison [8] did the same work for Picard curves. But it happens that this work has not yet been done for all genus 3 curves. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to compute the complete set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$ for any genus $3$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ that is a degree-$2$ cover of a genus $1$ curve whose Jacobian has rank $0$. We implemented this algorithm in Magma, and we ran it on approximately $40, 000$ curves selected from databases of plane quartics and genus $3$ hyperellitic curves. We discuss some interesting examples, and we exhibit curves for which the number of rational points meets the Stoll's bound

We generalize the results regarding Geometric Manin's Conjecture for smooth Fano threefolds, including the classification of subvarieties with higher a-invariants and Movable Bend-and-Break lemma. We also show Geometric Manin's Conjecture for some singular del Pezzo threefolds.

Abstract:We describe the moduli space of rational curves on smooth Fano varieties of coindex 3. For varieties of dimension 5 or greater, we prove the moduli space has a single irreducible component for each effective numerical class of curves. For varieties of dimension 4, we describe families of rational curves in terms of Fujita's $a$-invariant. Our results verify Lehmann and Tanimoto's Geometric Manin's Conjecture for all smooth coindex 3 Fano varieties over the complex numbers.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Mahler measures of more than 500 families of reciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. We numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these polynomials with special values of L-functions. We also numerically discover more than 100 identities between Mahler measures involving different families of polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. Furthermore, we study the Mahler measures of several families of nonreciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 curves and numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these families and special values of L-functions of elliptic curves. We also find identities between the Mahler measures of these nonreciprocal families and tempered polynomials defining genus 1 curves. We will explain these relations by considering the pushforward and pullback of certain elements in K2 of curves defined by these polynomials and applying Beilinson’s conjecture on K2 of curves. We show that there are two and three explicit linearly independent elements in K2 of certain families of genus 2 and genus 3 curves, respectively.

Abstract:We obtain a recursive formula for the number of rational degree $d$ curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ that pass through $3d+1-m$ generic points and that have an $m$-fold singular point. The special case of counting curves with a triple point was solved earlier by other authors. We obtain the formula by considering a family version of Kontsevich's recursion formula, in contrast to the excess intersection theoretic approach of others. A large number of low degree cases have been worked out explicitly.

K-moduli of Fano threefolds and genus four curves

Abstract:In this article, we study the K-moduli space of Fano threefolds obtained by blowing up $\mathbb{P}^3$ along $(2,3)$-complete intersection curves. This K-moduli space is a two-step birational modification of the GIT moduli space of $(3,3)$-curves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. As an application, we show that our K-moduli space appears as one model of the Hassett--Keel program for $\overline{M}_4$. In particular, we classify all K-(semi/poly)stable members in this deformation family of Fano varieties. We follow the moduli continuity method with moduli of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces, general elephants and Sarkisov links as new ingredients.

The Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture

Abstract:We prove the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties in characteristic 0. We follow the Pila-Zannier method to study special point problems, and we use the Betti map which goes back to work of Masser and Zannier in the case of curves. The key new ingredients compared to previous applications of this approach are a height inequality proved by both authors of the current paper and Dimitrov, and the first-named author's study of certain degeneracy loci in subvarieties of abelian schemes. We also strengthen this result and prove a criterion for torsion points to be dense in a subvariety of an abelian scheme over $\mathbb{C}$. The Uniform Manin-Mumford Conjecture for curves embedded in their Jacobians was first proved by Kühne. We give a new proof, as a corollary to our main theorem, that does not use equidistribution.

Mass formula for non-ordinary curves in one dimensional families

Abstract:This paper is about one dimensional families of cyclic covers of the projective line in positive characteristic. For each such family, we study the mass formula for the number of non-ordinary curves in the family. We prove two equations for the mass formula: the first relies on tautological intersection theory; and the second relies on the $a$-numbers of non-ordinary curves in the family. Our results generalize the Eichler--Deuring mass formula for supersingular elliptic curves; they also generalize some theorems of Ibukiyama, Katsura, and Oort about supersingular curves of genus $2$ that have an automorphism of order $3$ or order $4$. Abstract:A Richelot isogeny between Jacobian varieties is an isogeny whose kernel is included in the $2$-torsion subgroup of the domain. A Richelot isogeny whose codomain is the product of two or more principally polarized abelian varieties is called a decomposed Richelot isogeny. In this paper, we develop some explicit arithmetic on curves of genus $3$, including algorithms to compute the codomain of a decomposed Richelot isogeny. As solutions to compute the domain of a decomposed Richelot isogeny, explicit formulae of defining equations for Howe curves of genus $3$ are also given. Using the formulae, we shall construct an algorithm with complexity $\tilde{O}(p^3)$ (resp. $\tilde{O}(p^4)$) to enumerate all hyperelliptic (resp. non-hyperelliptic) superspecial Howe curves of genus $3$.

Explicit coverings of families of elliptic surfaces by squares of curves

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We consider the family of hyperelliptic curves over $\Q$ of fixed genus along with a marked rational Weierstrass point and a marked rational non-Weierstrass point. When these curves are ordered by height, we prove that the average Mordell-Weil rank of their Jacobians is bounded above by 5/2. We prove this by showing that the average rank of the 2-Selmer groups is bounded above by 6. We also prove that the average size of the $\phi$-Selmer groups of a family of isogenies associated to this family is exactly 2.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p >0$. Suppose $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$. We prove there is a smooth projective $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with no non-trivial automorphisms. In addition, we prove there is a smooth projective hyperelliptic $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ whose only non-trivial automorphism is the hyperelliptic involution. The proof involves computations about the dimension of the moduli space of (hyperelliptic) $k$-curves of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with extra automorphisms.

Castelnuovo bound for curves in projective 3-folds

Abstract:The Castelnuovo bound conjecture, which is proposed by physicists, predicts an effective vanishing result for Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one. Previously, it is only known for a few cases and all the proofs rely on the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. In this paper, we prove the Castelnuovo bound conjecture for any Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one, up to a linear term and finitely many degree, without assuming the conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. Furthermore, we prove an effective vanishing theorem for surface-counting invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-folds of Picard number one. We also apply our techniques to study low-degree curves on some explicit Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Our approach is based on a general iterative method to obtain upper bounds for the genus of one-dimensional closed subschemes in a fixed 3-fold, which is a combination of classical techniques and the wall-crossing of weak stability conditions on derived categories, and works for any projective 3-fold with at worst isolated singularities over any algebraically closed field.
