Abstract:CrI3 is a prototypical van der Waals ferromagnet with a magnetic honeycomb lattice. Previous inelastic neutron scattering studies have suggested topological nature of its magnetic excitations with a magnon gap at the Dirac points, which are anticipated to give rise to magnon thermal Hall effect. Here we report thermal transport properties of CrI3 and show that the long-sought thermal Hall signal anticipated for topological magnons is fairly small. In contrast, we find that CrI3 exhibits an appreciable anomalous thermal Hall signal at lower temperature which may arise from magnon-phonon hybridization or magnon-phonon scattering. These findings are anticipated to stimulate further neutron scattering studies on CrI3 single crystal, which can shed light not only on the intrinsic nature of magnetic excitations but also on the magnon-phonon interaction.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is whether the Thermal Hall Effect (THE) in the 2D van der Waals ferromagnet CrI3 is caused by topological magnon excitations. Specifically, the researchers aim to experimentally measure the thermal transport properties of CrI3 to verify whether the theoretically predicted topological magnon excitations lead to a significant thermal Hall signal. ### Main Research Questions: 1. **Thermal Hall Effect of Topological Magnon Excitations**: CrI3 is a typical van der Waals ferromagnet with a honeycomb magnetic lattice. Previous inelastic neutron scattering studies have shown that the magnetic excitations in CrI3 have topological characteristics and exhibit a magnon gap at the Dirac point, suggesting the possibility of a topological magnon thermal Hall effect. However, this effect has not yet been observed experimentally. 2. **Source of Anomalous Thermal Hall Signal**: Researchers have found that CrI3 exhibits a significant anomalous thermal Hall signal at low temperatures, which may be due to magnon-phonon hybridization or magnon-phonon scattering. This finding differs from the expected topological magnon thermal Hall effect and requires further investigation to explain. ### Research Background: - **Topological Magnon Excitations**: In certain ferromagnetic materials, magnons (i.e., magnetic excitations) can exhibit topological properties similar to the behavior of electrons in topological insulators. These topological magnon excitations may lead to a thermal Hall effect. - **Characteristics of CrI3**: CrI3 is a layered ferromagnet with a honeycomb magnetic lattice. Previous studies have suggested that the magnetic excitations in CrI3 may have topological properties, but this has not been confirmed experimentally. ### Experimental Methods: - **Sample Preparation**: CrI3 single crystals were synthesized using the chemical vapor transport method. - **Thermal Transport Measurements**: Longitudinal and transverse thermal conductivities were measured using a one-heater-three-sensor technique. - **Magnetic Field Dependence**: The thermal Hall conductivity was studied under different temperatures and magnetic fields. ### Main Findings: 1. **Insignificant Topological Magnon Thermal Hall Effect**: In the high-temperature region, the expected topological magnon thermal Hall signal is very weak, much smaller than the theoretical prediction. 2. **Anomalous Thermal Hall Signal at Low Temperatures**: At low temperatures, CrI3 exhibits a significant anomalous thermal Hall signal, which may be due to magnon-phonon hybridization or magnon-phonon scattering. ### Conclusion: - **Small Topological Magnon Thermal Hall Signal**: The results indicate that the topological magnon thermal Hall signal in CrI3 is very small, possibly due to weak intrinsic DM interactions or the synergistic effects of interlayer coupling and intralayer interactions. - **Anomalous Thermal Hall Signal at Low Temperatures**: The anomalous thermal Hall signal at low temperatures may originate from magnon-phonon hybridization or magnon-phonon scattering, providing new directions for further research. ### Significance: - **Need for Further Research**: These findings will motivate more neutron scattering studies on CrI3 single crystals to further understand magnon-phonon interactions and the intrinsic nature of magnetic excitations. - **Understanding Topological Magnon Excitations**: This study contributes to a deeper understanding of topological magnon excitations and their impact on the thermal Hall effect.
