Abstract:Recently, Bueno, Cano, and Hennigar [Regular black holes from pure gravity, arXiv:2403.04827.] proposed a generic approach for incorporating an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections into the Einstein theory. In this study, we compute quasinormal modes for certain regular D -dimensional black holes resulting from this infinite series of higher-curvature corrections, specifically focusing on the D -dimensional extensions of the Bardeen and Hayward black holes. We demonstrate that while the fundamental mode is minimally affected by moderate coupling constants, the higher overtones exhibit significant sensitivity even to small coupling values, yielding unconventional modes characterized by vanishing real oscillation frequencies. When comparing the frequencies derived from the metric truncated at several orders of higher-curvature corrections with those resulting from the infinite series of terms, we observe a rapid convergence of the frequencies to their limit for the complete regular black hole. Abstract:Recently, in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2403.04827" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.04827">arXiv:2403.04827</a>], it was demonstrated that various regular black hole metrics can be derived within a theory featuring an infinite number of higher curvature corrections to General Relativity. Moreover, truncating this infinite series at the first few orders already yields a reliable approximation of the observable characteristics of such black holes [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2403.07848" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.07848">arXiv:2403.07848</a>]. Here, we further establish the existence of another regular black hole solution, particularly the $D$-dimensional extension of the Dymnikova black hole, within the equations of motion incorporating an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections. This solution is essentially nonperturbative in the coupling parameter, rendering the action, if it exists, incapable of being approximated by a finite number of powers of the curvature. In addition, we compute the dominant quasinormal frequencies of such black holes using both the Bernstein polynomial method and the 13th order WKB method with Padé approximants, obtaining a high degree of agreement between them.

Abstract:We find accurate quasinormal frequencies of a quantum corrected black hole constructed in the renormalization group theory via the coordinate-independent iterative procedure, leading to the Dymnikova regular black hole. We show that while the fundamental mode is only slightly affected by the quantum correction, the overtones change at a much stronger rate. This outburst of overtones occurs because of the deformation of the geometry of the Schwarzschild black hole solely near the event horizon. For finding accurate values of overtones we developed a general procedure allowing one to use the Leaver method to metrics which, initially, are not expressed in terms of rational functions.

Abstract:We show via an explicit construction how an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections generically leads to a resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity in any spacetime dimension $D \ge 5$. The theories we consider have two key properties that ensure the results are general and robust: (1) they provide a basis for (vacuum) gravitational effective field theory in five and higher-dimensions, (2) for each value of the mass, they have a unique static spherically symmetric solution. We present several exact solutions of the theories that include the Hayward black hole and metrics similar to the Bardeen and Dymnikova ones. Unlike previous constructions, these regular black holes arise as vacuum solutions, as we include no matter fields whatsoever in our analysis. We show how the black hole thermodynamics can be studied in a completely universal and unambiguous way for all solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectra for scalar perturbation over a quantum-corrected black hole (BH). The fundamental modes of this quantum-corrected BH exhibit two key properties. Firstly, there is a non-monotonic behavior concerning the quantum-corrected parameter for zero multipole number. Secondly, the quantum gravity effects result in slower decay modes. For higher overtones, a significant deviation becomes evident between the quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) of the quantum-corrected and Schwarzschild BHs. The intervention of quantum gravity corrections induces a significant outburst of overtones. This outburst of these overtones can be attributed to the distinctions near the event horizons between the Schwarzschild and quantum-corrected BHs. Therefore, overtones can serve as a means to probe physical phenomena or disparities in the vicinity of the event horizon.

Abstract:While $(2+1)$-dimensional black holes in the Einstein theory allow for only the anti-de Sitter asymptotic, when the higher curvature correction is tuned on, the asymptotically flat, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter cases are included. Here we propose first comprehensive study of the stability and quasinormal spectra of the scalar field perturbations around such black holes with all three asymptotics. Calculations of the frequencies are fulfilled with the help of the 6th order WKB method with Pade approximants, Bernstein polynomial method and time-domain integration. Results obtained by all three methods are in a very good agreement in their common range of applicability. When the multipole moment $k$ is equal to zero, the purely imaginary, i.e. non-oscillatory, modes dominate in the spectrum for all types of the asymptotic behavior, while the spectrum at higher $k$ resembles that in four-dimensional spacetime with the corresponding asymptotic.

Abstract:We analyze the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a recently obtained solution of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH) with corrections motivated by Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). This spacetime is regular everywhere and presents the global structure of a black bounce, whose radius depends on a LQG parameter. We focus on the investigation of massless scalar field perturbations over the spacetime. We compute the QNMs with the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation as well as the continued fraction method. The QNM frequency orbits, for l=0 and n>0 , where l and n are the multipole and overtone numbers, respectively, are self-intersecting, spiraling curves in the complex plane. These orbits accumulate to a fixed complex value corresponding to the QNMs of the extremal case. We obtain that, for small values of the LQG parameter, the overall damping decreases as we increase the LQG parameter. Moreover, the spectrum of the quantum corrected black hole exhibits an oscillatory pattern, which might imply in the existence of QNMs with vanishing real part. This pattern suggests that the limit n→∞ for the real part of the QNMs is not well defined, which differs from Schwarzschild's case. We also analyze the time-domain profiles for the scalar perturbations, showing that the LQG correction does not alter the Schwarzschild power-law tail. We compute the fundamental mode from the time profile by means of the Prony method, obtaining excellent agreement with the two previously mentioned methods. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.107.104016 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:Quasinormal modes characterize the final stage of a black hole merger. In this regime, spacetime curvature is high, making these modes effective tools to probe potential corrections to general relativity. In this paper, we utilize the effective field theory framework to compute the leading-order correction to massless scalar and electromagnetic quasinormal modes. Proceeding perturbatively in the size of the effective field theory length scale, we describe a general method to compute the frequencies for Kerr black holes of any spin. In the electromagnetic case, we study both parity even and parity odd effective field theory corrections, and, surprisingly, prove that the two have the same spectrum. Furthermore, we find that, the corrected frequencies separate into two families, corresponding to the two polarizations of light. The corrections pertaining to each family are equal and opposite. Abstract:Perturbations of black holes, initially considered in the context of possible observations of astrophysical effects, have been studied for the past 10 years in string theory, brane-world models, and quantum gravity. Through the famous gauge/gravity duality, proper oscillations of perturbed black holes, called quasinormal modes, allow for the description of the hydrodynamic regime in the dual finite temperature field theory at strong coupling, which can be used to predict the behavior of quark-gluon plasmas in the nonperturbative regime. On the other hand, the brane-world scenarios assume the existence of extra dimensions in nature, so that multidimensional black holes can be formed in a laboratory experiment. All this stimulated active research in the field of perturbations of higher-dimensional black holes and branes during recent years. In this review recent achievements on various aspects of black hole perturbations are discussed such as decoupling of variables in the perturbation equations, quasinormal modes (with special emphasis on various numerical and analytical methods of calculations), late-time tails, gravitational stability, anti–de Sitter/conformal field theory interpretation of quasinormal modes, and holographic superconductors. We also touch on state-of-the-art observational possibilities for detecting quasinormal modes of black holes.

Nonlinear Quasi-Normal Modes: Uniform Approximation

Abstract:Recent works have suggested that nonlinear (quadratic) effects in black hole perturbation theory may be important for describing a black hole ringdown. We show that the technique of uniform approximations can be used to accurately compute 1) nonlinear amplitudes at large distances in terms of the linear ones, 2) linear (and nonlinear) quasi-normal mode frequencies, 3) the wavefunction for both linear and nonlinear modes. Our method can be seen as a generalization of the WKB approximation, with the advantages of not losing accuracy at large overtone number and not requiring matching conditions. To illustrate the effectiveness of this method we consider a simplified source for the second-order Zerilli equation, which we use to numerically compute the amplitude of nonlinear modes for a range of values of the angular momentum number.

High frequency quasi-normal modes for black-holes with generic singularities

Abstract:We compute the high frequency quasi-normal modes (QNM) for scalar perturbations of spherically symmetric single horizon black-holes in $(D+2)$-space-time dimensions with generic curvature singularities and having metrics of the form $ds^2 = \eta x^p (dy^2-dx^2) + x^q dØ_D^2$ near the singularity $x=0$. The real part of the QN frequencies is shown to be proportional to $\log \le[ 1 + 2\cos \le(\p \le[ qD -2 \ri]/2 \ri) \ri]$ where the constant of proportionality is equal to the Hawking temperature for non-degenerate black-holes and inverse of horizon radius for degenerate black-holes. Apart from agreeing with the QN frequencies that have been computed earlier, our results imply that the horizon area spectrum for the general spherically symmetric black-holes is equispaced. Applying our results, we also find the QNM frequencies for extremal Reissner-Nordström and various stringy black-holes.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of asymptotic safety of gravity, the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the infrared limit are corrected by nonperturbative effects. Specifically, the metric is modified by the running of gravitational couplings. In this work, we investigate the effects of this correction to the quasi-normal modes of a test scalar field propagating in this kind of black hole background analytically and numerically. It is found that although the quasi-period frequencies and the damping of oscillations are respectively enhanced and weakened by the quantum correction term, the stability of the black hole remains.

Higher-curvature gravity in AdS$_3$, holographic $c$-theorems and black hole microstates

Abstract:We construct higher-derivative gravity theories in three dimensions that admit holographic $c$-theorems and exhibit a unique maximally symmetric vacuum, at arbitrary order $n$ in the curvature. We show that these theories exhibit special properties, the most salient ones being the decoupling of ghost modes around Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, the enhancement of symmetries at linearized level, and the existence of a one-parameter generalization of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole that, while being asymptotically AdS, is not of constant curvature but rather exhibits a curvature singularity. For such black holes, we provide a holographic derivation of their thermodynamics. This gives a microscopic picture of black hole thermodynamics for non-supersymmetric solutions, of non-constant curvature in higher-derivative theories of arbitrary order in the curvature.

Quasinormal modes of a nonsingular spherically symmetric black hole effective model with holonomy corrections

Abstract:We calculate the quasinormal modes of a nonsingular spherically symmetric black hole effective model with holonomy corrections. The model is based on quantum corrections inspired by loop quantum gravity. It is covariant and results in a spacetime that is regular everywhere with a parameter-dependent black bounce. Perturbations of these black holes due to massless scalar and electromagnetic fields have been previously calculated and some intriguing results were observed. For some modes, the frequency versus minimum-radius parameter trajectories were found to spiral and self-intersect in the complex plane. In addition, the spectrum of overtones has real frequencies that oscillate with increasing overtone number, and may even vanish for some overtones. We have calculated the quasinormal modes for all massless spin perturbations, including spin-1/2, and axial- and polar-gravitational. We find that the trajectory-spirals are restricted to scalar perturbations and observe some interesting overtone behaviour for gravitational perturbations. The amount of isospectrality violation in the gravitational quasinormal mode spectra is also examined.

Abstract:The regularization procedure for getting the four-dimensional nontrivial Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet effective description of gravity and its Lovelock generalization has been recently developed. Here we propose the regularization for the three-dimensional gravity, which is based on the rescaling of the coupling constants and, afterward, taking the limit $D \to 3$. We obtain the generalization of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli solution in the presence of the higher curvature (Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock) corrections of any order. The obtained general solution shows a peculiar behavior: The event horizon is allowed not only for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, but also for the de-Sitter and flat cases, when the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant is negative. The factor of the electric charge is analyzed as well for various branches of the solution and the Hawking temperature is obtained.

Abstract:This study explores the scalar and Dirac quasinormal modes pertaining to a class of black hole solutions in the scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet theory.The black hole metrics in question are novel analytic solutions recently derived in the extended version of the theory,which effectively follows at the level of the action of string theory.Owing to the existence of a nonlinear electromagnetic field,the black hole solution possesses a nonvanishing magnetic charge.In particular,the metric is capable of describing black holes with distinct characteristics by assuming different values of the ADM mass and the magnetic charge.This study investigates the scalar and Dirac perturbations in these black hole spacetimes;in particular,we focus on two different types of solutions,based on distinct horizon structures.The properties of the complex frequencies of the obtained dissipative oscillations are investigated,and the stability of the metric is subsequently addressed.We also elaborate on the possible implications of this study.
Long-lived quasinormal modes and overtones' behavior of the holonomy corrected black holes

Abstract:Recently massless test scalar field perturbations of the holonomy corrected black holes [Z. Moreira et. al. Phys. Rev. D 107 (2023) 10, 104016] were studied in order to estimate quantum corrections to the quasinormal spectrum of a black hole. Here we study both the fundamental mode and overtones of scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields with the help of the Leaver method and higher order WKB formula with Padé approximants. We observe that the overtones depend on the geometry near the event horizon, while the fundamental mode is localized near the peak of the potential barrier, what agrees with previous studies. We showed that unlike a massless field, the massive one possesses arbitrarily long lived modes. We also obtain the analytical eikonal formula for quasinormal modes and its extension beyond eikonal approximation as a series in powers of $1/\ell$, where $\ell$ is the multipole number.

Abstract:Abstract This paper explores the properties of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a regular black hole (BH) characterized by a Minkowski core and sub-Planckian curvature. When focusing on a special case, this regular BH exhibits identical large-scale behavior with the Hayward BH and some loop quantum gravity corrected (LQG-corrected) BH. A notable characteristic of the QNMs in this regular BH is the pronounced outburst of overtones when compared to the Schwarzschild BH (SS-BH). This outburst can be attributed to the deviation from the SS-BH in the near-horizon geometry region due to the quantum gravity effect. Furthermore, we compare the QNM properties of the regular BH with those of the Hayward BH and the LQG-corrected BH. A similar phenomenon of overtone outburst is observed in the modes of the overtone. As a conclusion, the QNMs may be a powerful tool for detecting the quantum gravity effect and distinguishing different BH models.

Scalar fields around a loop quantum gravity black hole in de Sitter spacetime: Quasinormal modes, late-time tails and strong cosmic censorship

Abstract:Loop quantum gravity, as one branch of quantum gravity, holds the potential to explore the fundamental nature of black holes. Recently, according to the quantum Oppenheimer-Snyder model in loop quantum cosmology, a novel loop quantum corrected black hole in de Sitter spacetime has been discovered. Here, we first investigate the corresponding quasinormal modes and late-time behavior of massless neutral scalar field perturbations based on such a quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. The frequency and time domain analysis of the lowest-lying quasinormal modes is derived by Prony method, Matrix method as well as WKB approximation. The influences of loop quantum correction, the black hole mass ratio, and the cosmological constant on the quasinormal frequencies are studied in detail. The late-time behaviors of quantum-modified black holes possess an exponential decay, which is mainly determined not only by the multipole number but also by the cosmological constant. The impact of loop quantum correction on the late-time tail is negligible, but it has a significant impact on damping oscillation. To explore spacetime singularities, we examine the validity of strong cosmic censorship for a near-extremal quantum-modified black hole in de Sitter spacetime. As a result, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship is destroyed as the black hole approaches the near-extremal limit, but the violation becomes weaker as the cosmological constant and the loop quantum correction increase.
