Abstract:In this thesis we present the cosmological applications of some proposals from Quantum Gravity. Namely, we will explore classical and quantum cosmological implications of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity and the Swampland Conjectures. Furthermore, we will also present a detailed analysis of Lorentzian Vacuum Transitions in various contexts.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of the application of quantum gravity theory in cosmology, specifically including the following aspects:
1. **The influence of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) on the standard inflation scenario**:
- The paper studies how the GUP modifies the classical inflation scenario driven by scalar fields. By introducing a generalized form of the uncertainty principle, the author explores how this modification affects the inflation process. In particular, the author finds that even when the cosmological constant is zero, as long as the GUP is in effect, the universe can still undergo exponential inflation. This indicates that an appropriate form of the GUP can serve as the sole source of inflation without the need for other matter sources.
2. **The compatibility between Hořava - Lifshitz gravity and Swampland conjectures**:
- The paper analyzes the compatibility between the F(¯R) form in Hořava - Lifshitz gravity theory and the de Sitter Swampland conjecture. By using the flat Friedmann - Lemaître - Robertson - Walker (FLRW) metric, the author finds suitable forms of the F(¯R) function, which can make the theoretical parameters be constrained by the Swampland conjecture. The study finds that in some cases, these constraints are consistent with the ultraviolet behavior of the theory, supporting the validity of the Swampland conjecture and indicating that these conjectures may be applicable to more scenarios, especially those theories that violate Lorentz invariance in the ultraviolet region.
3. **The effect of GUP in the Wheeler - DeWitt equation**:
- The paper explores how to introduce the GUP in Hořava - Lifshitz gravity theory to modify the Wheeler - DeWitt equation. By considering the Kantowski - Sachs metric, the author shows two possible methods to obtain the modified Wheeler - DeWitt equation that only contains second - order momentum terms. In the infrared limit, the result is consistent with general relativity; while in the ultraviolet limit, an analytical solution showing oscillatory behavior is obtained. This indicates that by introducing the GUP, the ability of the Wheeler - DeWitt equation to describe quantum behavior can be improved.
4. **The study of Lorentzian vacuum transitions**:
- The paper proposes a general method to calculate the transition probability between two scalar - field potential minima. By solving the semi - classical expansion of the Wheeler - DeWitt equation, the author applies this method in different scenarios, including isotropic and anisotropic metrics in general relativity, non - uniform and uniform scalar fields in Hořava - Lifshitz gravity theory, and the Wheeler - DeWitt equation under the superspace description where variables satisfy the GUP. The study finds that general relativity predicts the existence of the initial singularity of the universe, while the Hořava - Lifshitz gravity theory and GUP solutions enhance the probability of generating a universe with a non - zero size.
In summary, by exploring the application of quantum gravity theory in cosmology, this paper aims to solve some key problems, such as the origin of inflation, the feasibility of the Swampland conjecture, and possible models to avoid the initial singularity. These studies not only deepen our understanding of quantum gravity but also provide new perspectives and tools for future cosmological research.
